NYC Games? NYC Games?

Btw, I came across poker site removed

It says there are a bunch of 1/2, 1/3, 2/5+ games in card rooms in time square and midtown. Anyone ever been there to recommend whether or not its a good place to go? Also if the rake structure is decent?

Thanks

Can play from 1-3 deep to 10-25nl - please PM me with info on games.

So I found out more info on the NYC poker clubs, but I haven't actually gone yet.

Anyways, the rake structure is just absolutely ridiculous.

1/2 - 10% up to 10 max
1/3 - 10% up to 20 max
2/5 - 10% up to 25 max
5/5 PLO - 10% up to 30 max

I mean I really doubt this rake structure is beatable long term (looking at 2/5 and 5/5 PLO mostly as my main games before I moved).

The only small bonus is the guy told me some whale lost 23k at a 5/5 PLO game last week.

So much for going to NYC Poker clubs, I'm still looking for a home game. Ill play anything from 1/2nl to 2/5nl and 5/5 PLO or under. Thanks.

Why is it so difficult to find an unraked/reasonably raked game in Manhattan?

You can't get a reasonably priced sandwich in Manhattan. Dunno why a raked game would break the trend of Manhattan being one of the most overpriced regions in the country.

Greed and also because the average poker player is stupid enough to play in these games. Most of the games I know (but don't play in) have a 5% no max rake. Pretty sick

a) greed
b) risk needs to be countered with worthwhile profits
c) ignorant players don't think about rake

sucks

Are there any worthwhile games in the area that do not have high rakes and do not have house players with deep house pockets?

Not really. The rakes kill you and the home games are run by people with very deep pockets. That's New York. T

There are good, non-raked games almost everywhere in the USA, so I'm sure there are a LOT in NYC. It is a matter of doing some networking to find them. It is unlikely you'll find them here. Ask everyone you meet if they play poker or know any poker players. If you find one game, you will find players there who know of other games.

The home games I know of in NYC that play 1/2 or 2/5 and above, don't usually invite strangers..it's a "you have to know someone" type of thing. And when I say know someone, you have to know them...not meet them online be a friend of a friend. Other than that it's private clubs who take 10% of every pot (up to $25 - the one I went to) Doesn't pay.

Is it normal though for games to have people that work the club or game play in the games?
It always seems like they are playing with unlimited house money so when they raise, call or reraise, it's just to create more action for a bigger pot and bigger rake coming back to the house.

I've seen these players have absolutely no emotion as if they couldn't care if they won or lost the hand and they reload on chips but there is no way to know what the deal is. In truth, you could take them down but I've seen them call very large preflop raises with hands like 87o or 45s and hit turn straights. runner runner flushes AND the weirdest part is they called ALL IN's preflop with those hands against KK or JJ and there is absolytely no surprise on their face about it. Some of these clubs give all these bonuses which feels like like $1000 or more each week which they can afford because their rake and house players will win it all back. You'll be able to take down some pots but when you are playing people without care and unlimited chips, eventually they will get lucky for real or scam you with the flop.

I watched one guy who was way ahead try to buy a flop against another player until the other player was almost all in. Eventually he folded to an even bigger reraise. When you can try to bluff a hand and spend $600 or so trying to do, I call a bluff especially when the other player kept calling your huge raises.

Anyways I didn't mean to get into it but I've seen some odd stuff and wish there was a spot that had people playing independent of the place and a smaller rake.

snapperhead join the NY home poker league. No rake. The stakes are low though but it's a fun way to play poke without the hassles of rake and raids.

I can absolutely understand this thought process, because NYC has 8.3 million residents, and probably 20 million if you take into account the city+a reasonable travel distance (northern NJ, Nassau County, etc). But, it's harder than you think. A huge percentage of people are very capitalistic; ergo, you get games that are heavily raked. Fewer people than you'd think are interested in running a true home game.

I can understand they are harder to find because the games would never be advertised, but poker players are everywhere. In more rural areas they can be fairly open. I know of a raked game in a barn that is wide open, and there are usually a couple of cops in uniform there playing.

But come on, poker players are playing poker with other poker players, and there does not have to be a rake to do that, unless they also want to run an illegal enterprise. Fraternal organizations, clubs, fire houses, after-work games, friends, etc. They are there, to be sure. You just have to get a connection.

I play in a uNL home game with friends in NYC (25c/50c), but I'm always looking for more options. This game is fun but runs once a week at most, and I want to play more hands with the inability to play online.

If there are any games people can advertise (will play anything up to 1-2, maybe 1-3) that are around I am quite a beginner so I will donate for the first few months haha.

Why not do the reverse? Invite some of us to the .25-.50 home game you're in, and then once you've met people, the game invites will come to YOU. I'm sure there would be people here interested in low stakes home games such as yours. I used to host one with no max on the buy in, pretty fun times.

It's not my apartment, I don't run the game just play in it, not really my place to invite people I don't know to this particular game, sadly.

It's also not really that sort of game, it's basically 6 friends and then a few people who have become regulars, but they all started as friends of the players.
