ok guys - i went to Mint - I was quite pleased with the place - it fits EXACTLY what I feel a poker room should be (outside of downtown)

2pm on father's day and poker atlas shows
prime has a 2pm tourney with 27 players registered and
post oak has same start time - same basic structure - 1 player registered
both have about 2 or three cash games running

prime has always been the king of the tournaments - I have yet to play one due to they are wayyy tooo early for me

I hope that we do end up with several choice for clubs to play - if one club ends up dominating then there will be no adjustments to bring prices in line with the low stakes average player - markets always equalize everything long before legislation is enacted

In other news looks like a club is up for sale on the west side near katy

West Houston Poker Club? That place has only been open for a little over a month. It's right next door to my house but for those prices I'd rather play at Post Oak or Prime.

From the number of Texas peeps I ran into in Vegas across the past few weeks, curious how much of the Houston club crowd is simply playing elsewhere...

I would agree michelle227 - especially for the downtown area which caters more to people that play vegas

I agree with you that the owner's history pretty much makes him a POS but no doubt there is lots of action at Mint... Lots of bad players there... Which of course we like..

I agree with you mike - in addition there seems to be a self enforcement of major players on cheating - several "rings" have been ousted

Played at Prime Social for the first time last Friday.. Played 20-40 limit for a while. Very good game and lots of action. I then jumped into the 1.3 NL game. Wasn't a bad game but after I while I then tried the 1/3 PLO... Game was on fire lots of loose players and tons of action. Cashed out about 2k up...Overall I would rate Prime very well. Good dealers and the floor staff ran the place very well.

Care to elaborate on this?

It has been taken care of and not an issue - I have played about 5-6 times now and it is one of the best places for the value and level of play

to elaborate - it came up in conversation from other locals i have played with for 20 years - I asked the common question - are there any "gangs" here I should be aware of" - they then explained that there are enough savvy players that this has been taken care of right off the bat.

So - in other words - it was a past issue - it is being watched for and of no concern (to me).

The biggest issue I have seen at most of these places is angle shooting... Checking out of turn, Betting out of turn, Making movements with chips, etc etc....

These places are 100x’s better to play at than the underground places. You are much more likely to be cheated there. Clive, your place even had a guy cheating for quite a while until he was caught. I do give you credit though for getting rid of him though once he was caught.

in 20 plus years - it was very very very rare and I think there were only 4 cases in my entire time - I have no idea which one he was and it does require that I catch them - for the most part - we are not your typical game - it was a social atmosphere

Why are you so f’ing confrontational itt? Your posting style makes you sound like an absolute Rick with a P — I’m not saying you are a prick, but if you’re not then you should consider your tone before hitting “reply” - bc the last several pages include posts where you, seemingly for no reason at all, put Clive on blast, respond belligerently to anyone who isn’t in lockstep with your point of view, and even ***** all over posters who seem to agree with you.

Just uh, FYI... a PSA if you’d like.

Dang JB why they pissed at you for jumping on Clive, I did the same a while back but i do apologize Clive. I know you have a lots of love for the game and only want to see things done right. you had a great run probably one of the best ever in Houston area. with all this talk of AG ruling or somthing never know maybe underground is gonna be back soon. Legion looks to be doing well, compared to legal room down the street.

Overall - I like to think I keep poker players interested in this as more than a game and it always will be - a hobby - a game - time out with the boys

If I get "butt hurt" every time someone disagree with me or if i got nothing but "oh clive you are so right - why don't you run for president...you get my drift

Poker is cuts across all walks of life - backgrounds - ethnic and gender - it is said to be the "truly American game" and yet it has been played for centuries in one form or another.

That being said - the whole "poker scene" in texas in a way defines this great state - we are independate SOBs - we will do what we want if in our minds it is not hurting anyone and it is what we like to do.

I view it many times from a mathematical point of view and this situation is no different. It is a business for almost all those that are hosting now - I did not quite have enough money to build my own little poker club and even if i did - I did not see it as economically viable for any long term.

Yes - 20 plus years with just my good lucks and fine personality has brought me in contact with some wonderful people - I would say that with almost certainly I am quite proud of those that QUIT poker from my advice and for those that continue - I know that most of them see it for what it is ...a past time

btw...the legion indeed is doing well...and it is due first and foremost due to the host - he spends many hours - I sold cars with Darrel at Toyota for a year or more before we both started hosting full time.

He is on the floor all the time - his wife is there too and that "home atmosphere" is why it will continue to grow

One club that super impressed me was Lion's club - the owner has more money than god and yet is on the floor shaking hands with everyone - thanked me for coming out - we had never formally played together and yet made me feel like a celebrity.
Thanks again - you

I play at Legion all the time and agree with your assessment....

No problem with your comments. You live in Dallas so you probably don’t know the people involved.

The two posters I’ve been confrontational with are:

1. Htown poker guy who is involved with the Stop Houston Gambling website. Sorry buddy but I will continue to be a “prick”when he posts his nonsense.

2. Clive, who has tried to start one of these clubs and failed so he continuously now questions the model. I will say some good things about Clive though: he ran an honest game (always paid out and never heard of him cheating anyone) and his claim to running the longest underground game in Htown I believe to be true.

I know, tough crowd! I agree with your prior posts about Mint. Have been playing there recently and games are great.

How’s that for civil discourse? Gotcha, I see where you and HTP butt heads over his possible affiliation with the STOP group. Just thought Clive contributes to the discussion and couldnt piece together the animus.
