Decent podcast today with DP, BO and AN talking about The Lodge. Nothing really earth shattering, just content. It was great when Rampage showed up and dominated the chat for about 20 minutes! GL

Is there a demand for dealers at the poker clubs or is the market over saturated with help?

I was there (The robber actually ran right past me going from the kitchen to the front door) and it was one of the scariest experiences of my life. The security guard (Tek is his name) was extremely heroic and brave, as were other employees such as Nixon the floorman and dealer Travis Johnston to name a few. There was more than 100 players plus staff and this man went all out to save everyone. It is not an exaggeration to say he potentially saved dozens of lives as well as tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars from being stolen by his bravery, skill, and quick actions.
Thankfully there were no severe injuries that I was aware of, and other than some people having some or most of their chips taken off the table no other losses.

This is floating about via text today. Looks like the decisions are being made.

So ridiculous. Back to the underground, I guess.

It will probably be 6 to 12 months before anything happens due to legal processes.

If anyone can get a link to the zoom call post it here

Hey,

I will be one week in Houston during the summer. What locations do you recommend for playing NLH 1/3 or 2/5 in Houston? I didn't find any latest infos in this thread and I'm not sure how accurate poker atlas is.

Thx

I put very little credence in what is writt3n about game availability on atlas. I would just review the waitlists. Still not perfect but far better. The other thing is where in Houston will you be. Houston is large and very spread out city. Answer could be different if you are in Katy v Webster v Spring v ???

Are any Texas rooms within a reasonable safe walking distance from a modestly-priced decent hotel?

Texas is big and has a lot of rooms. You want to be a little more specific?

Thanks for you answer! I haven't booked the hotel yet. So is there one club where there is always a lot of games running, especially on the weekend? Or is there an area where there are several good clubs?

Ha yeah. I would in general say Texas cities aren’t really setup for walking distance hotels. In Houston there’s places like slightly newer Best Westerns within 1-2 miles from the rooms but it’s not a walk I’d want to do at night especially leaving a card room with large amounts a cash. Maybe something where you could walk during the day to the rooms but would want to Uber/Lyft back.

Anywhere in Texas with games that give the Texas experience that people talk about where I can get around without renting a car or using Uber/Lyft.

SA Card House in San Antonio has a decent hotel right next to it. Think they have a special rate for players if you call the room. I stayed there pre pandemic and games were good at that time. Hotel was nice.

Live in Houston and you aren’t going to want to walk to any of the places with good games here. As poster earlier mentioned hotels within a couple of miles though where you can cheaply Uber.

Lots of nice hotels in Round Rock where The Lodge is. Ubering back and forth should be cheap.

It's outside the scope of this thread, but I just don't use Uber.

Is it just Uber or is Lyft an option? Most Texas cities, Houston in particular, are not really pedestrian friendly. Downtown not bad but that isn’t really where the rooms are. Sure you can walk up and down Westheimer, Richmond, etc but I would not recommend it at night carrying more than pocket change.

Clubs, restaurants and other night activity venues in Houston have had parking security for 35+ years for a reason.

Midland is quite safe compared to the big cities. Most of the motels are 3.5 mile away which sucks on the rare occasion that temps hit 118 degrees but I did see one motel that is just over a mile away.

Other than that, the room rates tend to fluctuate with the price of oil. During the last oil boom rooms were going for $300/nt although that doesn't seem to be an issue right now as I see rooms for as little as $40.

Anyways, why not just go to the place with the cheapest hotel rooms, which would offset the cost of uber?

Anecdotally, it seems that Houston has had the most players shot and/or robbed at gunpoint in targeted robberies. TBC seems to think it's the safest place to play cards though. Best of luck.

Also gonna suck when it is 25 deg F and there is a 15 to 20 MPH sustained wind (Midlan in a couple of days).

But my question, serious one as I know nothing about poker in Midland, will it give the Texas poker experience?

I try to avoid using these services while they classify their drivers as independent contractors rather than employees. I guess I'll either have to drive down or find a period when rental cars are cheap.

Rental car prices while still high have gone down considerably from the crazy highs of a 1-2 years ago.
