Note: I am neither a lawyer nor a LEO, but this is based on discussions with both. Thankfully I've never been involved when a game was busted.

As a general rule, cops don't care about home poker games. Even raked games, they're not going to go out of their way to bust unless there is another reason to do so. They have better things to do and would rather devote their time to those items than something that is not impacting anyone outside of their consent.

Games get busted for two reasons:
- There are other factors that gets the attention of LEOs (drugs, other gambling, noise complaints, violence, etc)
- The local DA is trying to make a name for himself by showing he's tough on illegal gambling (this happened a couple of years ago in Gwinnett County).

So for legitimate home games, there should be no worries about the cops showing up unless you're guests are dicks to the neighbors. Obviously, this assumes you're not putting up flyers advertising the game or otherwise shoving it in the faces of the local authorities.

That's good to hear. From what I could read the laws on the books, for GA, are pretty draconian.

Just wanted to give a shout out to my new friend Mariettabull, really appreciated the fun friendly game you provided at your home. Hands down the nicest non raked house I've played in (primo cards, a dealer, custom made table, nice chips with accurate denominations, complimentary drinks, etc) Hell it's actually a lot better then some of the raked houses I've played. Good to see people dispelling the more shadier elements of the poker stereotype(s). My wife and I had a blast, we look forward to the next game.

Any poker tournaments in the area these days? Or, everyone is only playing cash?

I know there are some home tournaments in north Cherokee county in a couple of the big neighborhoods up there, and I imagine there are similar in other parts of town. There are also some charity tournament groups in town. Interstate Poker Club is running theirs under the Little Kings & Queens moniker in Buford and On Tilt Promotions runs in Smyrna.

They're essentially grey market games. To my knowledge, none of them have been tested court. Also, the cops don't go after them due to them being charity games along with the fact they're often hosted at places like the American Legion, the Moose Lodge, and the like. Those places have strong ties to the community and the police, so they're overlooked.
