12 players showed up after some last minute flakes. We didn't want to do single elimination (although we wish we should have) because of an unfair advantage for players getting a bye. After some brain-storming we decided on doing a double elimination bracket instead of round-robin. thenorcaljew and TheGreenMile met in the finals late in the night, TGM had to beat Jew twice but they eventually found a fair equity deal and chopped. Jason (livinandrockinout) also finished ITM for 3rd place.
Overall the night was a complete disaster when it came to organization/structure. 4-5 hours into the night me and few other players in the loser's bracket had to play multiple matches to even sniff the finals.
A lot of players will definitely be hesitant to want to do this type of thing again but honestly I think we worked out most of the kinks as we went along. Late in the night we adjusted the starting stack/blind levels to speed it up and it was pretty much perfect so the same structure will probably be repeated next time. Double elim was favored by all players but doing a 12-player bracket is just awful. Double elim would be awesome w/ 8 players. Every detail/logistic of the event will be improved enough that we could do this again smoothly without going into 2am-3am. TheGreenMile, livinandrockinout and abarber probably agree.
We could probably fill 16 players but it would have to be single elim and honestly I would rather just find a good group of 8 reliables for double elim (unless we we had 16 that could commit to a 2-day event, then 16 players double elim would be awesome). Really annoying if you lose the first match in single elim and forced to pick your nose or go home right off the bat. It's nice to climb through the loser's bracket in double elim and possibly get a few rematch's along the way.
Also interested in doing some 1-2 table sit and go's/small stakes cash games to change it up. Of course I'll wait until after WSOP to consider getting something else going.
Thank you for hosting, Julian. Both David "professor" and I had a good time. We will work the kinks out in the future, but we definitely need to do it again. Oh, +1 to everything Chris said, too.
**** was rigged...but I had a good time. Can't believe I ended up in Reno...how much did I drink? Thanks for having us NCJ, it was good times getting owned in my last 2 matches. Cheers
Really bummed out that I had to flake on this. I was looking forward to meeting some local poker players and having some good times... but I have a new 6 week old puppy and when I tried to leave the house she was flipping out and I had no choice-. Hopefully there is a next time and congrats to the winner. Maybe one of these days I can host a game if anyone is willing to come to the worst place on earth Stockton CA =D
You missed a good time, next time we should do a Saturday & BBQ.
I hear ya. Stockton is horrible. I basically stay at my house or go out of town. I just moved here from Yosemite area so it's quite a culture shock for me but I'm saving up money and planning on moving to South Lake or Sac. Anyways If anyone host's another game or anyone gets together to go play cards somewhere let me know, I'm always down to play some cards and drink some brews.
