Okay, this is being asked in this thread because this thread is about the home scene in DC/NoVa, which is probably the biggest market that Charles Town Races & Slots draws on. So, I ask:

What do you think the effect of poker coming to Charles Town R&S will be on the local home game scene in DC/NoVa?

My personal feeling is that most of the local games that rake or compel tipping will dry up, as there will be a place where you can play with a rake that is legal and safe. I think home games that have no cost will still continue, especially those that are much more social in nature, rather than rent-grinders.

Opinions?

Update on some local game robberies:

6 Md. Men Charged With Robbing Va. Poker Games
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) ―

Six Maryland men have been charged with armed robbery for stealing cash, jewelry and credit cards from two private poker games in Fairfax County last month.

Police suspect even more robberies occurred, but that victims have been unwilling to come forward and admit they were gambling when they were robbed.

The charges stem from robberies that occurred on March 12 and March 22 in Fairfax County. At least one of the suspects wore a black T-shirt with
"POLICE" written on it. Others wore masks and brandished guns.

Haven't heard anything. The two active Meetup groups I know of in the area haven't been robbed yet and do take some steps to verify the players, which is good.

The Washington Post story on these guys includes images of all six fellows, so if you know them from your poker game, it's time to reconsider security. According to the article, the games robbed were in Burke and Centreville. I'm hearing the Centreville game might be the game at "The Shop", but can't confirm that. I don't know anyone who will admit to playing in the Burke game. The article also says that they suspect other games were robbed, but the victims haven't reported it.

that just sucks. Police say they believe the groups were targeted but declined to say whether the players were identified through networks of high-stakes poker games arranged at private homes.

It may seem cynical, but there have been a lot of poker game robberies in Northern Va and Maryland over the last few years. Good security and knowing your player base helps a lot, but no game is 100% safe.

A friend of mine who I used to play with fairly frequently had his home game (he was the host) robbed. Fortunately, I wasn't there, as I hadn't played with him for a few months.

Small stakes, too. $0.50/$1 NL. He told me the *******s brought shotguns (but nobody was harmed).

Be careful, people.

I was at that game in Manassas that got robbed. There are many of us who were there who feel it was an inside job setup by the hosts. The person running it had his "home game" busted 3 weeks later, and was arrested and convicted of drug dealing later that year.

A lot of game safety is choosing who you play with.

that's insane Phineas. You are lucky nothing went wrong like in the movies and bad things started to happen. I was really only worried about somebody coming back after a bad beat or bad sportsmanship, not armed robbers.

Hello all, been awhile.

I host a micro stakes home game, $20 buy in, .10/.20 in Arlington VA, near the Pentagon.

Usually play on Saturdays, with random games here and there.

The rule is you've got to state your rake policy.

It doesn't matter how low the stakes are. If I make an exception, it will just complicate matters. Thanks for your cheerful cooperation.
