DMV poker and NoVa poker club are two different groups. I was a member of the NoVa Poker Club and no longer recommend it to people.

I'll have to second this non-recommendation. NoVa Poker Club is a home business. The game is unraked, but the gentleman who hosts the game is doing so to earn a living. Therefore, if he thinks someone else will make the host more money than you, you will get booted (uninvited) without warning or explanation. He's dishonest and I would not recommend anyone ever go to this game.

Interested in the AdMo game if it's still running. Not sure how to PM, but would appreciate details. Prefer live to online and don't want to wait until the games start up in WV this summer.

Go to one of the Bryans road fire dept. charity tournaments. Just google them and click the texas holdem link on the bottom left of their site. The tournaments once a month, I think next is apr 8th not 100% though. I know a lot of Southern MD regs used to play that every month and thats where I started my journey into the DC/MD/VA home game circles. Not sure who's still playing around there though, but I still go once in a blue moon for the charity game. I know there's also a weekly tournament (or used to be) down in hollywood md and some home game regs used to haunt there.

They have cash games after wards for all the bustos at the BRFD game but be careful... W/E amount of chips you buy from the staff, they keep 10% as the rake lol...

Just find a few players with a lot of chips and buy them off them. Minus the regs most of the players there are pretty ******ed and don't mind if you take money off the table...

Not too long ago, fire houses in MD had the right to operate a casino 2 days a week. They all opened casinos -- and not just poker, but blackjack, craps, the whole works. There must have been 20 casinos in Maryland, within 45 min of DC. They all got shut down around 2000, though. Too bad. They were awesome. They all opened on different days so you could find a casino any day of the week -- and some of them very sophisticated, nice casinos. And some were garages with 2 or 3 poker tables running.

Having gone to this game several times I highly doubt the way you presented this to an unknowing Internet audience is accurate.

And fwiw, I stop inviting folks to my home games if they never bring some kind of token, even if it's a bag of chips or a sixpack and I always reciprocate in kind when they host. This game provides a dealer and plenty of action and is well worth a couple of chips from the winner out of the pots that usually develop (which doesn't always happen btw) - sorry you got yourself booted but I'm sure the games you now frequent meet with your approval - please post them for the rest of us.

You can highly doubt it all you want, but I was uninvited without any real explanation and in a fashion I believe is dishonest. I am not the only person this has happened too either.

I may not have brought snacks or beer but since I tipped the dealer for every pot I won I don't feel it was a lack of contribution on my part that is the source of the problem.

Yeah I just looked it up, that looks pretty sweet. $150 buyin(26% raked) and $50 addon(50% raked lol?). It says it's deep stacked - I wonder how deep it actually is. It's an hour away from where I live, so I'll probably just grab a few friends and go. Thanks for the info!

Sounds good, I'm not taking sides here since I don't know what went down between you two. I've just had positive experiences with this club and the host.

Even though I don't recommend this place anymore, I don't agree with the "dishonest" description. The hosts are upfront about what they do, as long as you understand that what they do is not a home game that they host, but a for-profit card club at this point. The way I understand it, some folks were uninvited because they are not what is thought of as "action" players. The hosts want a lot of actions, so there are larger pots. Larger pots usually means larger tips for the host, who is the dealer all the time. He does also play at times, but it's not common, and he continues to deal while he plays. If you are not a player who helps build large pots, you will be either placed on the waiting list in favor of players who will, or you are uninvited from the club.

I heard a discussion at another game that this game is getting a higher profile on the local card scene. The increase in stakes and games (they are running 4 games a week, spreading from 1/2 to 2/5) also increases the chance to bring unwanted attention from folks with badges or ski masks. Neither one would be good.

Who would want to be a poker dealer/host at their own house and play with just enough money to keep the club running and peace of mind rather than players that understand how to tip appropriately.. For an averaged raked hand, there is roughly $3 (or more!) taken out of the pot and the winner still tips $1+ to the dealer. Players should basically tip at least half of the rake that would have been taken out PLUS the $1+ you would normally have tipped. It seems very unfortunate that there is a nice poker game close to your home for you to play in (sarcasm) that doesn't rake you all night long.

Most people don't understand the luxury of not having rake taken out of their pot and only tipping $1 to the dealer. Who cares if someone if trying to make a living doing it? I've met the people hosting and they are very kind and generous people that seem to be out looking for work and doing this for now from what conversations I've heard while sitting at their game. If they were trying to make a living on it, they would have a raked game like all the other sketchy-ass raked games that go on around the area. At the games I've been to, I felt as though I was the only one saying thank you for all the things that were done that night and people are already taking the game for granted-- Me, I'm just happy I don't have to drive to AC or go to a raked game where I lose a % of my money to some guy who is making $1500 a night. Everyone has held a poker game in their house, right? Well this is what these generous hosts have to do on any night they hold a game:
1: Host a game in their own home for all the players benefit (and theirs! I obviously lose sometimes, but I win too-- It's not my fault their strategy to make money is better than most of ours risking it at poker but I'm fortunate enough to be able to risk it).
2. Ensure there is a full game + waiting list, which is not that easy to do since people seem to back out minutes before the games start. If that happened often, I wouldn't go to a 6-8 player game.
3. Have drinks/snacks/small food available to keep people at the game/happy. Yes I understand it's not a deal breaker for that soda/water/chips/pizza, but things add up and makes you feel comfortable going to the game.
4. Host deals your hands (pretty good dealer too, not some hot woman that cant deal and still rapes me on the rake she takes that are most likely wrong a few times a night and no one notices!)
5. NO RAKE-- I mean, there is no rake, how can you ever argue anything? Rake would cost atleast 30-40 bucks per person a night if there was rake.
6. Lastly is cleaning/maintenance. The hosts have to count all cards/chips before and after each game to make sure it's safe and no one is cheating. Their house/poker area seems spotless from 12-15 people walking through it 4 days a weeks so I'm sure there is a ton of cleaning there, too. Does someone else want to start the group? I didn't think so. Thank you hosts!

People have to remember that it's a private poker group. The term "action players" is exactly right and I wish it stood in more games. I don't enjoy playing a 1/2 or 1/3 game with players buying in with $60-100 bucks and wait for pocket aces only-- and then busts out and leaves after $100 is lost and we're down to 8-9 players 30-minutes into the game that is going to end four hours into the game rather than 6 hours into the game.

If you are trying to make money, go to AC, online, or a raked game. This is a big, fun, home poker group. If you cannot afford the higher stakes that people clearly want (since it seems no one objects if a player or two gets kicked out for bringing no money to the game and dealer), then you should pick a new spot obviously. This game has only brought in better players over time and runs a very smooth operation. I highly recommend this club/game to all players-- just make sure to treat the hosts the way they should! GO NOVA POKER! Best game in town

P.S.- If you were holding a game and has one player that comes twice a week with lots of action and you know will sit at the table all night versus someone that comes once every couple weeks with $100 and tight play, who would you choose? Yea, get real guys, I know who you would choose for your game.
