Good luck. Despite 8 million people living in the five boroughs alone, it seems impossible to find legitimate, legal home games in NYC

So start one! Surely out of 8 million, you can find 8 who will join you once a week.

Actually there are tons of games in NYC. Both in cardrooms and home games.
I would recommend starting with craigslist. Many of these games have a facebook page. Once you get into one game, you'll be able to get into others, it works pretty easily. I get texts and e-mails every day with info about games in various locations.
They usually require some kind of verification process, but that's pretty easy.

These games aren't that soft compared to casinos that you can drive 2 hours to. A lot of these NYC people are intelligent and educated, and they tend to take the game seriously.
And for some reason, very few of these places tend to serve alcohol (I like to have a couple beers over the course of a session).
I don't go that often because I live outside of the city (in NJ) and have other responsibilities, so I usually play online.

Limit poker seems to be dying and the most common games are $1/2 NL, standard $60-300 buy-in. There are some bigger NL games too.

It will just get worse since we are probably 16 months or so away from legal poker. Just be patient.

Actually, no, I can't. Admittedly living on Staten Island, which people treat as a foreign country, is a big drawback, but in general people simply are not as interested in playing as they used to be. It's very difficult to get people to commit to showing up on certain days at certain times to play long sessions. Many people from my generation/peer group (I'm 29) picked up the game 7-8 years ago in late high school or college, loved it for awhile, and then moved on. I've found it very difficult to get consistent home games at my house or at friend's homes, and we're talking different stakes, games, tournaments OR cash, etc.

90% of what you're referring to are likely illegal, underground rooms (and there aren't even that many of THOSE any more to begin with). This is the Home Games Forum, people are asking about legitimate, unraked home games that operate in a traditional sense.

A friend and I would likely be interested in very small/micro stakes home games in NYC. We are basically looking for something that is a cost-effective learning experience. Definitely not interested in any raked games or underground card rooms. If anyone starts something up, let me know.

I'm down. Might have some friends who would be interested to play micro limits in Financial District. I prefer to play 1-2 or 1-3 cash, but I'm somewhat flexible. I don't have a table and my place is small though.

No, that's not what I was referring to at all. No rake, no fee, in somebody's apartment. I apologize if I wasn't clear.
Just nose around on Craigslist.
