This thread, and hundreds of others just like it, provide great clarity in the life of a tournament player. For the vast majority it's a losing proposition when factoring in rake, taxes, tips, travel expenses, and the sheer monstrosity of variance. You might ogle at someone's hendon mob page and see they've cashed for $1,200,000 in tournaments and wonder in amazement thinking "wow, why can't i do that!" But then, you realize after all the tournament buyins they made where they did not cash (most players cash in less than 15% of tournaments), all the money they spent on travel expenses, the taxes on their winnings exceeding $5,000 net of buyin, and having to purchase their own benefits like health insurance if they don't have a traditional job along with playing poker, they aren't really making much money at all.

Remember kids, stay in school and move up that corporate ladder. It's the only sure bet in life, and one that ensures you'll have a comfortable retirement where you aren't deep in debt or hoping for a miracle major cash in a tournament.

While I agree with the general sentiment, I think it would be more fair of you to post it as a separate thread and not in Tryba's one. Unlike some others on this forum, he actually is a winning player and had a $145K cash, where he paid out large % to the investors, just earlier this year.

By the way, if you are young (<40), it is likely you will never get to collect on your social security. So invest in stock market, buy real estate and create alternate income streams whether you are a poker pro or have a dayjob. GLGL!!!

I'm grateful I finished my BS prior to poker explosion. Have few complaints with how I've lived my life. Poker has introduced me to many wonderful people and experiences. . There are plenty of downsides...same with many other things.
