Yeah, it doesn't add up to me either. When I first played poker, I preferred to lose money playing actual poker rather than play the free games. "Practicing" on the higher stake free games still doesn't really mean much. The donks that introduced me to poker (both down $1000s) have each gotten to a million in pretend chips.

its no more inherently goofy than buying wow gold.

Its pretty hilarious that people still do this. I didn't understand it 4 years ago and I don't understand it now. It use to be a conspiracy that sites who bought play money chips were contracted by stars to move play money players to real money in hopes that they would begin to deposit. Which obviously is false. This is how I got my start in poker and haven't deposited a dime of my own money onto any site. In fact every time I make a withdraw it asks if I'm sure I want to because I still qualify for my first time deposit bonus. There's a ton of threads about buying play money...I wish I could get an answer as to why people do this?

reasons for why someone would buy playchips:

1. you suck at poker and spending $10 on play chips gets you more play than depositing $10 and burning it at microstakes
2. you self-excluded and now are in deep regret/gambooling withdrawal
3. you are 12 yrs old
4. you want to try out a new game/style of play and would rather do so against high stakes play maney regs than micro real $ randoms
5. you play real $ games but use your play chips for spewing/detilting purposes (bullying the highstakes nittards by bluffing at 2 million chip pots is so much more fun than just open shoving your entire 1k playchip roll and a lot cheaper than chasing losses)
6. you like to play poker but are mormon/muslim and afraid of burning in hell, but lack the patience/skill to beat the stakes where people shove all-in dark
7. you buy chips to grind and, in turn, sell for profit
8. you want to feel baller at the "nosebleed" playchip tables
9. you sell play chips to these people

i know its an absurd concept for many of you, but some people choose to play poker for fun, not to make $.
some people can't handle losing real $ or have major tilt issues but still love the game.
who really gives a **** why people buy them? i'm just glad they do.

btw the 10k/20k HA game on FT is the stone cold nuts and i advise everyone in this thread to buy up a bunch of play chips so we can get a game going
