Hey guys.

I'm a new poster on these forums but been luring since late 2015. I'm a 28 year old F1 motorsports CADCAM engineer from the UK. I'm in to fast Fords, modified car, golf and just about every other sport imaginable (although I watch more than I play nowadays).

I've been playing poker on a regular basis since November 2015. However I only started taking it seriously in March 2016. At this point I was playing for a few hours every night and decided to purchase PT4. I knew I was a poor player at the time but had no idea just how bad until I saw my statistics. At this point I'd burnt through about $400 jumping between stakes and spewing my chips off in every way possible.

Therefore I decided to join deucescracked (use RIO now alot too). After a few days watching all the older micro/beginner videos I made the decision to look for a coach. I'd enjoyed the way Threads13 (Jacob Hoke) presented his videos and he was highly thought off across many forums, so I dropped him an email. Within half an hour of our first session he'd begun fixing the biggest leaks in my game and I began to crush 5NL pretty quickly (had a small downswing in the middle where I got to overconfident but quickly sorted that). Fast forward a couple of months and I've now had 9 one hour sessions with him and my game has gone from strength to strength. I now play 10NL and once my bankroll is up to $500 I will be taking a shot at 25NL.

Goals for 2016:
  • My main goal: Be beating 50NL by the end of 2016
  • Continue coaching with Threads13
  • Continue reading mental game books (weaker area of my game) - have 3 to finish
  • Continue studying on various training websites
  • Keep this thread updated with hands etc.
  • Links to previous one; Become a more active member on 2p2

Graphs
I'll just post my graphs since I started my coaching sessions. The one before that is pretty much just a vertical line down anyway.

Zoom tables mate. I sometimes mix regs in just for a change but prefer the faster pace of zoom.

Bit of a roll coaster session tonight. Had some really nasty suck outs but overall a lot of the swings were caused by me not being on my A game. England played yesterday so I'm pretty hungover. Probably shouldn't have played but need to get a bit of volume in before the week starts again.

Few hands:

Think I made a bad fold here. My gut instinct was telling me to call but with the BB having 70BB left decided to fold.. Wasn't convinced I could get to showdown. Obviously can't shove the flop as nothing worse is calling.

Interesting hand. Hand is to strong to fold to the SB 3-bet (possible squeeze). On this flop what do we think; shove with the 2nd nut flush draw and the straight draw? Happy to do that vs SB but with another player left to act not sure if flatting is best.

I should have mentioned in my first post that my "regular" updates will probably mostly be weekly. This is due to working away from home during the week, so I don't get much of a chance to play. I had a very rare "gambling slip up" last weekend. Was pissed up after the England football and unfortunately decided to gamble away some of my roll. Something I haven't done in many, many months so pretty disappointed in myself. I've taken a bit of time away from gambling over the last week because of this. Instead I've been studying on RIO and finishing up some of my books.

Currently win rate is 6.5BB/100 at 10NL over the last 25,000 hands. Going to keep plugging away until around 50,000 hands. If I'm still doing well enough I'm going to deposit some more money to top up my account and take some shots at 25NL.

Bubbled the PS big $5.50 and the $3.30 1k guaranteed tourneys this evening. First losing hand I had KK BvB and he bluff raised allin with 57s, turned a straight . Next one was KK again, all-in by the turn and he rivered a flush, no overs. Oh well, good fun and I thought I played well in all of them. Don't know if AA-QQ are still all-ins preflop when you're on the bubble of a big tourney but the cash game player in me definitively isn't willing to fold them haha.

Red line not looking so healthy!

Couple of hands

This is just pants on head ******ed, gotta love it though.

How would you guys play this one? I would normally cold 4-bet but if he shoves we know we're completely crushed. Could flat and play the flop but if an A comes and he's holding KK etc it will scare him off. Do we just have to call the 5-bet and hope he has QQ (if he'd shove that after the cold 4-bet)?

Hey milks. Do you think the coaching you've received from threads13 has had a positive impact on your results? I ask because when I started playing poker myself about 6 years ago, I remember watching threads13's videos on DC and thinking they weren't great. He also doesn't play on Pokerstars at all (he is from the US) so I doubt that he has the requisite knowledge about the player pool or player tendencies on Stars to be coaching people on how to beat the games there.

Previous thread never really took off after real life got in the way of poker. I've now stopped contracting and have a permanent role, actually starting a new position very soon too. I've also settled into a new home, just 10 minutes from work. Now that I'm working a normal shift pattern and not travelling, I want to begin focusing on my poker again.

Will be posting hands for discussion regularly and also my graphs, both good and bad!

General rules I'm going to be applying:
1) 2 hour sessions at a time, with a decent break in between.
2) Bankroll management - minimum of 30 buy-ins, if I drop below I will move down stakes.
3) Calling less in general, mainly with hands that don't have enough equity on the flop.
4) Post hands for discussion.

Starting bankroll - $200

Few hands from today that I was hoping to get insight on from more experienced players. Will post more and session results at the end of the night.

Should I just be flatting on the BTN with TT against a CO open? If I do 3-bet should I then be folding to a 4-bet?

My gut feeling without any info is to call the shove given our positions, although the more I think about it the more this seems a "spewy instinct". However due to Zoom ranges normally being tighter I'm leaning towards a fold. Thoughts?

What about 4b'ing pre and iso'ing yourself against 30bb BTN? You could also 3b pre with the two short stackers behind.

I agree, that's an older hand and I would play it as you suggested now. Thanks for the input .

Played this hand horribly earlier, very disappointed in myself:

Pre-flop play is straight forward. However I should have fired on the flop. Very poor play. Lost my way in the hand after that, hence the fold on the turn.

If I had called flop do people think it's best to x/c the turn or to fire again? If I bet and got raised then I'd be unsure whether to just shove or fold, given that the board paired.

Well first session back at the tables was a bit of a roller coaster. Played terribly for the first 1,500 hands. Then I got back into the swing of things and have been pleased with my session. Got sucked out on twice right at the end AA vs KK and AA vs QQ, so lost 200BB. Annoying but is what it is and I don't mind losing when I played it right . 5000 hands and feel like I'll be beating 5NL pretty easily again soon, which is nice.

Hand 1 - Folded here due to the bet size. With the board already paired I don't know if my outs are good and will be facing a pot size shove on the turn. Villain can have some over pairs, KQs-T9s etc but very few Ax hands that connect with that board as I have the A of diamonds. I'm an equity favourite over most of those hands but felt we weren't deep enough. Best play may have been to 3-bet all-in.

Hand 2 - On the turn think this is a fold. Think I should have flatted AQs instead of 3-betting, lots of play-ability post flop. Save 3-bet for AQo.

Hand 1 - No real info on V pre-flop. Believe I misplayed this hand from that start. Given table positions and stack sizes I think this is a slam dunk 5-bet for me. If he was in EP then I'd be happier with my flat call.

Played as it is - I think the flop and turn calls are fine. Even if I assign him a tight 4-bet range with minimal bluffs e.g. KK+,JJ,AKs,AQo+ then I'm still a slight equity favourite. 8d on river changes nothing but people rarely triple barrel at lower stakes, so maybe should have been a sigh fold. Not sure if turning QQ into a bluff catcher is ideal though given pre-flop action.

Overall graph:

Today's sessions only:

I've been using Leakbuster to help identify some of my weak areas. My first analysis showed 4 "critical" leaks and quite a few "very important" ones too. Over the last few thousand hands I've managed to cure the critical ones, after some studying on RIT etc and I'm down to just one "VI" leak. Apparently I'm not winning enough $ at showdown from the BTN. Going to play some more hands and analysis my database to better understand what's potentially causing the issue.

Up and down session again. Need to work out the main causes for this before it becomes a pattern. Will save that for another post though, as this one is already quite long. Once I get into my groove I feel very confident at the tables , just gotta eliminate mistakes.

According to PT4 I'm actually losing money overall when playing AKo & AKs. Only slightly but obviously that's very bad. The biggest of the losses all come from bad bluffs after missing. Some hands from tonight, got myself into trouble with AK several times:

Hand 1 - Probably just a standard fold on turn. Not sure if the flop should be a x/c instead of a bet though.

Hand 2 - Should I be shutting down after the flop call? Looking back no over pairs are going to fold.

Hand 3 - No info on villain. AJs to strong to fold when he's potentially 3-betting the CO light. Should I be C-betting this flop? I feel I should be 100% of the time after cold 4-betting. Poorly played hand post flop.

Hand 4 - Really pleased with this hand, felt I read it perfectly all the way. I bet on flop when V checks to protect my hand and get some folds from Ax etc. Villain's raise doesn't make sense as he's not doing it with a J. Turn card changes nothing. x/x on river as I thought I had the best hand.

Hand 5 - Just for the lolz, standard 18% 3 way all-in suck out. Terrible shove from Villain in my opinion. My flat call achieved exactly what I was hoping for. Pretty ****ed off after this hand, had to take a break. Happened near the end of the day.

**** session today. One of those where the most rage inducing suck outs happen. KK all in preflop against 55, hits a set. AKs all in preflop against KQo, board runs out a 5 card straight etc etc. Was 2 buy-ins down within 5 minutes, all from preflop suck outs! The only positives from the session were I managed to control my tilt and didn't throw loads of money away in anger, plus got myself back to even. So I suppose I should be happy really .

In times gone by I would have probably jumped up to 10NL and lost more. My mental game has always been my weak point, so any steps forward are great. I had a huge (and very unexpected) anxiety attack about 4 years ago. Ever since then I've battled with anxiety, usually coming out on top . I started doing Yoga about a year ago, to try and help me relax and focus my mind. I've also just started learning meditation. 10 years ago I would have laughed at the idea of needing to do any of it, always thought I was very mentally strong. Funny the surprises life springs on you.

This hand happened just after getting back to even (the first time):

Session graph:

Played quite a long session this evening. Other than one very poor river call with AA I think I've played okay but haven't run well. No matter what's happened I've stayed in control though and haven't tilted in a single hand, which is great. Flopped a straight flush draw for the second time in a week... don't know what the odds of that are but I imagine not much . I personally think my pre-flop play is my strength at the moment. Post flop I'm making questionable decisions.

Real life update - Still feeling under the weather, been like that for 8 weeks. Had blood tests and doctor is ringing me on Tuesday to speak about them. If they're clear think I'm going to take some time off work to try and sort my head out. Need to get on top of my anxiety again (crushed it before and will do once more), can be crippling.

Hand 1 - I'm losing all my money here regardless in my opinion. Think I should have checked the river to allow him to bluff, would have snap called.

Hand 2 - I checked the turn to let any Ad hands bluff. Think I should be betting to charge them to draw. Called on the river as he played his hand like AQ (in my opinion). Took a long time for me to call, maybe I should be finding a fold here. Think I played this hand poorly.

Hand 3 - Villains were unknown. After both called on the flop I felt one must have a set, given pre-flop ranges and the fact there's only one draw on the board. Not sure if my fold is correct.

Hand 4 - This is the AA hand I mentioned at the start of this post. Have a lot of trouble letting big pairs go in 3-bet pots.

Decided to make the switch to Party Poker today. I've always played on Stars but don't like the way they're going with rake back etc. Party have a simple and solid rake back system and they had a decent first deposit bonus offer. So far my thoughts are:
  • They've improved their software, looks and feels much better than it did many years ago.
  • Player base is pretty dead early in the morning but during peak times there's still thousands of players on.
  • Their version of Zoom seems to have even tighther regs than PS.
  • Still plenty of fish making strange plays. Probably a higher % of weak players vs regs than PS, at least at the micro stake tables I'm playing.

Graph for my session today:

No particularly interesting hands. Got AA in pre-flop twice and they held up. Also had players 5-bet shoving AQo pre and players x/jamming e.g. JJ on low boards in 4-bet pots etc. Will hopefully have some decent spots to post by the end of the week .

Poker studying - Seriously considering joining Upswing's poker lab and giving it a try. I used to have a subscription to RIO but found a lot of their material a bit too advanced (although incredibly interesting and well presented). Feel like I may be overconfident and times given the lower stakes I'm playing and would like to improve my basics further, especially:
  • Playing AK post flop
  • Create a solid (and probably larger) pre-flop 3-betting range.
  • 4-bet bluffing.
  • Playing post fop in 3-bet pots, both as the 3-better and as the caller.

I've always enjoyed Polk's presentation and like the fact that he's heavily featured in the courses.

RL update - Blood results came back and other than a Vitamin D deficiency (worked nights for 5 years) I'm in great health. Also had my eyes checked and they're fine. Think a lot of stuff may have been in my head, plenty to work on.

Short but decent session today. Played poorly for the first 100 hands or so but managed to grind my way back. Going to anaylse the start of a few of my sessions, think it's when I play my worst poker. I've invested in Pokersnowie, so will use that to warm up . Haven't pulled the trigger on the Upswing Lab yet. Going out on Friday night, will make a decision on Saturday.

Hand 1 - No info on V preflop. Decided to mix in A4s as a 4-bet bluff given our positions and the fact that I have an Ace blocker. C-bet on flop as my full 4-bet value range would be betting this flop. Decided to give up on the turn, less than an effective PSB left and he's not folding any over pairs etc, plus the T is more likely to improve his hand than mine.

Hand 2 - River seems like a fold as I'm only bluff catching.

Hand 3 - Called flop x/r as I have position and it's a draw heavy board.

Hand 4 - Not really sure if this is a poorly played hand or just a case of losing the minimum. I think I just have bet the turn too instead of checking, multiple hands pick up equity and I should charge them for drawing on the river.

Hand 5 - Unsure whether turn should be a x or a bet (folding to a raise).

Hand 1 - BTN is 17/10 over 40 hands. Small sample but it's relevant, not someone you want to be 4bet bluffing. Your 4bet size is also too big, make it 20 bb or so you can include more bluffs

Hand 5 - Bet the turn, don't be afraid of flushes, you even have the king of clubs
