Korea is a mixed bag. We have family here so my wife is happier but I'm on a schedule now where I'm waking up at 3 or 4 AM every night to start the grind. It's very discombobulating and I don't think I'm getting enough sunlight. I kind of want to move to Canada or Europe but I have visa issues.

I really like visiting London but it's quite expensive and like most major cities there's a huge gap between being rich and being average I think. Where are you located now?

Hey NW, yeah that's me. I had an issue during an SJC where someone stole my deck mid round. This was the 3rd time or so this has happened to me and the previous two times I was dropped from the tournament since I didn't show up for the next round. I think I was 7-1 or 8-1 so I just borrowed one of my friend's decks and got caught. I was playing GB and borrowed X-Sabers so there was no incentive for me to really do this. They banned me for a year which is within the rules and fair. It's a real stain on my sporting record but I'm fine with it.

Meeting with my Coach and Reflections

After binking big boy style on Winamax I went pretty hamburglar and jammed every buy-in on the following 2 Sundays. This was also during the drama with the landlord so I was quite stressed out.

I think I dusted 6k+ per session and then my coach was scheduled to come over for a week from Jan 27 to Feb 3. He's an American expat who also used to play Yu-Gi-Oh! Let's call him Wildawg. The idea of this trip was for him to see me in my natural habitat and improve the parts that would lead to more success for us this year.

I've been working with my coach mostly since 2015 after leaving my position in BBZ Staking. He's put a lot of time and effort into me and he's a good friend so even though I have enough to go on my own I'm planning on sticking around for a bit.

He's also working on his love game so we went hunting a bit on the streets of Seoul. Unfortunately my game is withered from lack of use and I was unable to hyper carry in the ultra tough nightlife environments of the city that never sleeps. We had a few mincashes though.

Anyways, long story short here's a write up of what I learned from my man.

Life Leaks Pt. 1

I'm going to separate this into poker, marriage, and health. I think they're all tied together.

1) Health

I used to be pretty fit when I was younger. As I've gotten older I'm definitely out of shape and I've been unhappy with my health for a while now. All of my weight goes to my big belly so people can't really tell how OOL I've gotten but it's there. You can tell you're getting older when your body suffers from various leakages in ill-timed spots and general torpor.

Wildawg is pretty fit and studies body health and stuff. He has suggested taking a cold shower in the morning, eating an apple a day first thing in the morning, using variable caffeine amounts instead of sticking to the same drink in the morning, and getting more cardio in.

These cornball words are my own, but investing in your health is one of the most important things you can do. The money won't matter in the end when you're pooping into buckets.

2) Marriage

I love my wife. We are like yin and yang though. Like Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield even (shoutout to Sweet Valley High). We have a dynamic where she pokes and prods me into doing things and then I build up frustration and then eventually snap with something rude.

At the bottom of it all she's an incredibly loving person who is always looking out for me. When she nags it's because she cares. And like I said with the landlord/apartment mess, I have a tendency to snap at her or blame her for things sometimes instead of taking full responsibility myself. This ties in to #1 and #3 with mental health.

3) Poker

I'm going to breakdown my strengths and weaknesses as a poker player.

Strengths:
- Very Math/HUD based
- Very little tilt, consistent B- to B+ game
- Able to mass multitable quite well
- Getting better strategically after some dark days in 2015/2016

Weaknesses:
- Too many tables to think thoroughly. Will occasionally punt due to this
- Too loose with game selection sometimes (this used to be a strength of mine)
- Handle downswings poorly
- Weak mental game
- Overemphasize small samples in game and "slurpy" opponents over a small sample

It actually shocked Wildawg how many tables I was playing. There's something degen about it for me where I like getting into these deep work flow states where the actions/responses are instantaneous and I can rely on muscle memory.

When you really boil it down though, it's pretty ridiculously wildly stupid to try to force yourself into a flow state in a strategy game where you're not thinking on purpose!

Wil has encouraged me to reduce my table count from 15-16 down to 9 on weekdays for now, and stretch to 12 on Sundays. Honestly it's been a real struggle but as I've done this my winrate has improved and so has my focus. It sure is refreshing actually being able to think about poker while playing and being able to get reads on showdowns and such!

Eventually my path will have to branch into one of two competing options once PokerStars opens back up to me on 03/14/2019:

1) 9 table $109+ and try to keep up with the best High Stakes regulars. There's a lot of money in this if you can make it to the top.

2) 15 table $16.50-$215 and try to have a very good autopilot B+ game.

The way I see it, the 9 table training I'm doing right now along with my other study tools will make my B+ game in whatever I choose much better anyways.

Wrapping it all Up

I think my relationship with my wife and my poker mindset are tied together. My coach was watching me from the side and I think I lost 5 sessions in a row or something so by Sunday I was quite moaney and obnoxious. I handle bad beats and coolers pretty well but the things that tend to trigger me in game are regulars taking nut peddley lines while pretending they're balanced.

Wildawg is very objective and rational and going forward I'm definitely working on this. I want to approach poker as a rational game of skill (which it is) and remove a lot of the negative emotions and bitching from it. And with my wife I want to take more responsibility and treat her kindly, knowing that even her nagging is from a place of love and sweetness.

I think I'm on the right path here and we'll see where it takes me. I can only do the best I can and wherever I end up I'm okay with.

Yeah you're right. There's definitely a happy balance here to strike. You've pointed out another thing about me. I'm very polarized and too extreme one way or the other. My wife tells me all the time that I have to have it one way or the other with no in between.

Pretty frustrating session today and I've lost a bit of momentum from my pre-Sunday peak. My net dropped out today on Party for some reason. I was using a mobile tether and eventually thought to VPN from the UK to get it back live. It was a bit tilting constantly dropping out and I wasted quite a few nice stacks due to this.

WPN was having issues with Skrill so I wasn't playing on it for a while and now that it's back and with all of the festivals going around.. I'm falling back into some bad habits, loading up to 12 tables on weekdays. It pains my heart but I think I'm going to have to give up MicroGaming and IPoker next (already have given up PokerDom).

I didn't mention this above but one of the best ways to support poker IMO is to play regularly on sites that align with your philosophies and value systems. I'm a very big fan of Microgaming and Unibet, both UK focused sites that are working hard to gain regulars. I also like GGNetwork quite a bit. And I think 888/IPoker should do more with what they have.

Party/Winamax/WPN/888 is enough for me I think. I'm going to do a write up of what I loaded on Sunday and all the garbage I played through. But before that, in the spirit of supporting online poker and Phil Galfond's blog post, I want to write my thoughts on Runitonce's poker client.

I'm not a super huge Galfond fanboy but I do like him and this post was very moving. It almost brought tears to my eyes. I can say he's too idealistic and it's more likely than not that RIO Poker won't make it. The space is too monopolized and competitive.

However, I share his idealism and want to live in a world where sites like RIO and old PokerStars are the caretakers of the game. If you read through the list of blog posts regarding RIO, you can see a man and company who genuinely care and "get it."

Cash games are actually quite interesting because they don't require liquidity like SaG and Tournaments. Anyone can sit at a cash table so you can actually make a difference and enact positive change by supporting your favorite sites with your dollars. Unfortunately, whiel I'm not super familiar with the cash metagame it seems like a lot of cash pros are selfish and more motivated by their bottom line than the greater good.

Playing on Run it Once

As a pro trying to EAT, I'm not a huge fan of Run it Once the training site. However I've been following Phil's blog and really like a lot of his ideas. The rakeback system and avatars with dynamic hud in particular are incredible ideas to me.

Pluses:
It took me just a few moments to get set up with signing up for an account. The site is very clean and simple and I must say one of the most rec-friendly environments out there. It always boggled my mind how large sites didn't start removing HUDS, seating scripts, etc. considering how much of an advantage they give pros over recs. I believe in what he's building here.

Minuses:
Playing on the site itself was fine. I must be very off peak right now but it took a bit to get 4 tables going at $20 NL. I have a few niggles to complain about. I don't like the lack of table tiling and I find the animations a bit slow. I also don't love the art style but that's all subjective.

Quick Hitter Take:
I'm rooting for RIO to succeed. I think it brings a lot of unique features to the table. The fundamental problem with RIO Poker is that the site is tied to the brand of a top shark training school so I doubt the pools will be the softest out there.

I barely come to the PG&C but found out this.

In terms of how they treat their employees and benefits, Stars Group is a great company and I have no complaints. There are actually a lot of companies looking to make moves in the sector that are also hiring so I'd suggest taking a look.

Me personally I got the job because Luke and I used to game together and were still Skype friends. He sent me a message and I was always interested in that line of work and wasn't having a great 2 years of online poker. I flew out for a visit to the Isle of Man and slowly got seduced more every step of the way.

I'll do a post about living on the Isle of Man one day. It's pretty neat-o. Shoutout to the Isle of Man where my baby girl was born. A true Manx bird that one is.

Poker Update:

On a bit of a downer since the last time I posted (~$20k). My coach has helped me with mindset and I'm handling this one a bit better. I've fired tons of $530s and a few $1k's in this time so this kind of swing is natural. I think my database metrics are looking pretty good though.

I've decided to shape up some of the game selection since I really need to grind some positive $ out for my family. EV and swick-dinging in big games won't pay the bills and I realistically have 2 years to make this happen before giving up the pro dream for good.

In a way it's a blessing that I started off well. Knowing myself this would be much harder if I had started off 25K in the hole instead of losing some profits back.

Anyways for now I'm going to remove any $215's that don't have at least 50k in the prize pool and remove any $530's that don't get at least 200k. I need to prep for getting Stars back in just about a month from now. Once that happens there will be a lot more good midstakes games to fire.

I'm looking over my 0-$75 graph now and it doesn't get much cuter. It almost looks like a money printing machine so if I feel things aren't working out by March 14 I'm going to really get nitty with the game selection and focus on making stable income.

I really like what PartyPoker is doing with their schedule though. They've recently expanded to the :30 time slot as well and are also pushing midstakes quite hard from what I'm seeing. It will be interesting being able to play on Stars again as a consumer

My name on DGZ was Jordan123, I would say I was somewhat of a semi consistent poster, even managed to get like 1500+ pos rep by the time I stopped frequenting the site. DGZ was definately the best place for competitive YGO, but I personally also loved Pojo.biz aswell, mostly because I used to trade on there relentlessly and managed to amass the highest amount of positive trade references in Europe on there.



Ye it was really a knife to the heart when I got my deck stolen at a live event, had a almost fully hollowed out Blackwing + extra deck stolen at a London regional back and it was the nut low feeling. The amount of theft in the game was definately one of the worst aspects about the game. Think Konami could have at least empathised with you about your situation but they were always pretty liberal throwing out the banhammers. Glad you've been able to navigate your way through that, and onto poker so successfully. Keep crushing man.

Poker Update:

I lied about the game selection. Had a good pep talk with a few people I respect and decided to fire anything with an edge and embrace the swings.

Sunday was one of the most ridiculous days I've ever had. Second in net profit to the day I won the Warmup as a newbie for 6 figures. It feels pretty incredible and is honestly such a huge boost for a weak mental game fish like me. I thought I'd have a good shot at doing well when leaving my job but I never would have imagined I'd start like this.



Here's a recap of the day's festivities.

- Early Grind: I started real fresh and early even managing to find myself in games like the $55 5K 6-Max on Party and the $55 10K on 888. I found a 6th for $158 in the 6-Max and an 18th in the Monsoon for $77.62. I try to stick to around 12 tables on Sundays.

- Midway through the session I was building quite a few stacks and had built up a sizable PKO total in the $530 500K. I finished 6th in a $109 7.5K Gtd turbo around this time for $413 and was a bit disappointed not to go further. Side-note: these tournaments are pretty good spots for overlay value hunters as Party tries to expand to the :30 time slot.

Preposterous. With that wrapped up I still had a final table at the $215 Sunday Special on WPN to win with $29,887 up top. This table was by far the softest of the day and I had built a massive chip lead of 91bb while 7-handed at that point. I managed to cruise to heads up and then lost a bunch of pots and a flip to finish second.

So overall Sunday was a good day. There's been some news in the poker world I might want to discuss at some point. I'm just going to keep grinding hard and studying as well. See you in the streets.
