Intro

Hey guys,

January 1st marks the day most of us decide to put our foot down and self-improve, and I am no different. I can see just by looking in the lobby today how common this is, so hopefully this doesn't get lost in the bunch.

I'm starting this thread hopefully as a means of accountability, and partially as a way to share my progress with anyone willing to follow it. After all, what good is success if you have nobody to share it with?

I'm going to share a bit of backstory on who I am and my poker history in the next few paragraphs. If you already know me or don't care, feel free to scroll down to the graph.

My Poker Story

I first learned of poker in 2009. I'll spare you the details, as I'm sure it's not unique. My college roommates introduced me to it, I became obsessed, and here I am today.

From then until April 7th, 2014, poker was important to me, but nothing other than a serious hobby. I played online and in local card rooms whenever I had the chance with what little money I had. I would usually wait until I had saved up enough to play some $1/$2, string a few winning sessions together, and continue to play on that "bankroll" as long as I could until I went busto.

That way of life changed on that day in April. I managed to win a table share of a bad beat jackpot while playing $1/$2, worth $9,300 after taxes were taken off. It was more money than I'd ever had by a long shot. No more dipping into the life roll to play poker. This was my bankroll now, it would be used for poker and poker only.

With my super awesome new bankroll, some friends told me I should give some major tournaments a try. Up until this point, I'd rarely attempted a tournament over $100, but I did have confidence that I could do well, given that my primary focus in poker was online tournaments.

The next major tournament in my area was an MSPT stop in Battle Creek, a couple hours away from home. Only working 3 days a week at the time, I decided to head over a few days before the main event and try some satellites. I fired three shots, but I managed to win a seat into their main event. I can already tell this story is going to be longer than I intended, so I'll just skip ahead and let you know I got 13th for around $4k.

I got my first taste and I wanted more. I had padded to my already larger than I could dream of bankroll and with a few cash sessions, built it to around $15k. A couple months later I played my first HPT and made the final table, ultimately finishing in 7th for $19k.

I suddenly had $35k in my pocket when a few months ago I would sweat whether I had enough money in my account to afford Subway. I was unstoppable. When the MSPT came back to Battle Creek in October, I bagged the day 1A chiplead, but ultimately had a disappointing 17th place finish. The following month I made another deep run in the HPT, but ended up settling for another top 20 finish.

By the end of 2014, I couldn't help but think "This is it! All you needed was to be handed a bankroll and your skills did the rest!" I was now working full time however, so dreams of going pro were put on hold. In the meantime, I used my new wealth to buy myself a new (to me) car. My '97 Accord was traded in for an '07 Sonata for the low low price of $6k.

2015 was the biggest reality pill I've ever swallowed in poker. I won nothing, almost literally nothing. Look at my Hendon Mob linked at the bottom of this story. I didn't take any poker off that year, I just couldn't win anything. I went to all the same stops, fired multiple bullets everywhere, it all went wrong. I made one day two in a $300 tournament that wasn't reported and mincashed. By the end of 2015, I was busto.

In March of 2016, I'd saved up enough money to take another shot. This time though there was no sensible cash game shot to take in my mind. I'd grown addicted to the potential glory of taking down a major. I had saved up enough to play another $1k tournament, I registered for the next one near me in Toledo. It was then I finally snapped my cold streak, finishing 6th for $12k.

I had a bankroll again, and with a (hopefully) improved skill set, and (hopefully) more careful bankroll management, I wouldn't lose it all again.

Unfortunately I didn't make much more noise that year. Min cashed a couple things, made my first trip to the WSOP (didn't cash anything notable), but by the end of the year, I still had a bankroll so there's that!

2017 was a great year. No deep runs, only two live cashes, however one of them was in the WSOP Main Event. After leaving Vegas empty handed for the second year in a row, two days later I won a seat to the main event on ACR parlayed from an $88 satellite entry. Playing in the main event for the first time was a dream come true, and cashing was the icing on the cake.

2018 was also a great year. In March I managed to take down a local tournament (ICM chopped as chip leader for more than second place money, left $5k and the trophy to play for and took it down) and claim my first trophy!

I was also able to follow that up with a couple cashes in Vegas that summer, including a mincash in the WSOP Shootout (my favorite event of the summer).

The Dreaded Graph

So you might be asking, "Well Alex, it seems you've had a moderately successful poker career so far, why the thread?"

I'll tell you why, my online results suck booty, that's why.

For the longest time I've had my Sharkscope graph blocked and would say to others "Why let opponents know if I'm winning or losing? Better that they have no information to go on." The truth is, one day I looked at my graph, and was embarrassed of what I saw. I couldn't beat the games online. So I blocked it and justified it with stuff like "Who cares, you're making money live," and "Who even knows if the players you're against aren't shady and cheating you somehow, plus online is just tougher in general."

Then a few weeks ago, I decided to look up my friend's graph. We've shared our poker journeys together over the years, but the major difference between us is my willingness to shot take, vs his lack of that same willingness. He has no live tournament earnings to date (however I think this is the year that changes), but for a while I've considered him to be around the same skill level as me, if not better. Unfortunately with his bankroll nittiness and hate for tournaments, he rarely would put himself out there in poker to give himself a shot at real glory.

As soon as I saw this, I realized how much I'd been lying to myself. I have no problem admitting that he is a better player than me, but to see him crushing like that since switching to MTT's a few months ago was really eye opening. He puts in infinitely more hours of study, and it's finally paid off for him in a big way. This year he's promised to start taking some live shots (while selling action of course) and I have no doubt that he will be putting up results very shortly.

Plan of Attack

So the whole point of making this thread and posting my graph is to change that graph into something I can be proud of. Consider this thread my social media post of a shirtless pic with promises that with hard work it will look better a year from now.

I've decided I'm going to take a few steps to try and achieve this goal:

1. Game Selection
I think I play too high of stakes. I haven't messed with the filters on Sharkscope, but I have a feeling my stats/graph wouldn't look so bad if you limited the results to buyins $55 and under. Until I feel like I'm firmly crushing, I'm going to keep to strictly those buyins unless I can manage to satellite into something larger.

2. Study!
I hardly ever study. Why would I? Playing is so much more fun. That ends this year! I have dozens and dozens of hours of Upswing material that I've paid good money for and never watched, as well as a few books I've barely read. I'm going to start with the lofty goal of studying every day for at least an hour. This feels lofty but really I think it's all a matter of time management. I could easily take the first hour or last hour of my day and set it aside to study instead of sleeping in or watching Netflix.

3. Coaching
So I've gotten coaching before. I'm not going to throw him under the bus, but I paid $600 for 10 hours up front, and I truly don't feel I got anything out of it. I know this can't be the case for all coaching, so if I don't start seeing some results by the end of March, I'm going to look into investing into some better coaching.

4. Twitch?

I'm considering doing some Twitch streaming this year. This is partly for accountability, as well as just a way to better connect with anyone willing to follow my progress. I think it may also just add a bit more fun to it.

Conclusion

If you've gotten this far, bless your little heart, this is way longer than I expected. Thanks for following along. I'm going to post in this thread after every session this year, so hopefully by December we're looking at a nice V shape on this bad boy.

TLDR; Bad reg online, okay reg live, gonna try to be okayer online.

Poking my head back in here to say that this month will be a slow start to getting the online sessions rolling. I have a lot of live poker scheduled for the next couple weeks, including my WSOP home game tonight, an HPT next week, and an MSPT the week after that. I’m managing the studying so far though!

Well about halfway through the month I finally got my first online session in yesterday. Didn’t go amazing but it felt promising. Had a few deep runs that I would have liked to extend but things didn’t go my way. Roughly -$300 on the day but I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on what I was doing and my thought process. HPT didn’t go well last weekend so hopefully the MSPT can turn things around.

Studying is challenging. I’m having a hard time using the discipline to put in the time. I started waking up an hour earlier and watching Upswing videos but I’m not much of a morning person so I’m thinking I might try to start doing that at the end of my day instead of the beginning and see how things go.

Thanks for following.

Had a 13 hour or so session yesterday. I feel I played pretty well but my results didn’t line up so much, so I’ll have to look back over the HH’s and see if any obvious mistakes stick out. I took some shots in the $109 warm up and feel good about my play there. My bustout hand has me wondering though, I called QJ from the BB vs a button raise and check/shoved a J83r flop vs a guy who was 11/11 on cbets. He woke up with QQ and I busted about 20 short of the money. Finished the day about -$600. Small sample but I think I’m running below EV so I’m not sweating it yet.

One part of my studying is learning more about my PT4 to analyze my play. That’ll be a priority this week.

Hopefully digging this hole a little deeper off the bat will only make the turnaround more impressive Turning the Graph Around: The AlexBalex Story

Had another session yesterday. Made a few deep runs in the $11 buy ins...nothing in the upper buyins resulting in another losing day. Feeling slightly more dejected than in the past but it’s coupled with motivation to study more and more. Won’t be playing for at least a few days so hopefully we can come back from this fresh and reinvigorated for my love of this soul crushing game.

Side note: I think I’m playing too many tables. Going to try and stick to a 4 table max strategy. Was playing 7 between two different sites at one point last night.

Put a relatively successful session in on Thursday. Made a final table and had a couple other cashes to give myself a +$300ish day. Would have been slightly larger but we decided to take a $109 shot with our profits and missed. Still, really happy to have booked a winning day after the rough start to the year. Let’s hope the momentum is real!

just found this, gl bro. QJ hand from a few posts ago seems standard to me if you were <30 bbs deep.

Your story is interesting, and really all it tells me is that variance in live tournament poker is ridiculous. Even your buddy's sick graph has a 5k game and a 1k game breakeven stretch. Few people will even play 1k live tournaments total lifetime so honestly a crusher could be breakeven lifetime in live MTT's due to variance. I think this point gets lost a lot of the time when people have a bad year.

QJ hand was ~20bb iirc. Other friends think it’s standard too, just felt like a punt in the moment I guess.

Live MTT variance is huge but I don’t think I’m an ideal example, my sample size is lower compared to most because it’s difficult to get work off for the ones I travel to.

My buddy’s graph is mainly jackpot games on WPN, hence the breakeven stretches. The big shot up was a $9k score in their weekly Cage tournament that he won via $55 satellite, which he won entry via rewards for their weekly SNG leaderboard. The bunch of straight lines at the end is when he switched to 100% MTT’s.

Just wrapped up one of the more infuriating online sessions I can remember. Nothing would go right today. Don't have much to say about it so I'm just going to post my graph for today's sessions. I'm still learning how to interpret things on PT4 so maybe I'm doing this wrong but I think this means we ran pretty bad today.

And we'll just share some of my worst beats today because who doesn't love hearing other player's bad beat stories?

Alright, enough whining. I've decided to jump start my plan of hiring coaching if things don't turn around in March. I've hired a coach and my first session is in a little under a month because our schedules couldn't line up for anything sooner. I think today was largely runbad but I really need someone to look over my hands this year and try to spot the leaks.

Put in a couple more sessions Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday was roughly a -$300 day and Wednesday was about +$100.

Not a huge sample size but we’re down $6k lifetime on the site as of now, as opposed to $4k when I made this thread. Not last Sunday was discouraging but after looking over my play the past couple days I think I’ve learned that I’m probably taking too many thin +EV spots late in tournaments and playing too passive early in tournaments. I made an effort to work on those specific aspects on Wednesday and I think they were a big reason it was a profitable day.

One example of me straying from that line of thinking was a hand late it in the $16 20k last night. A player quickly shoved 8bb UTG and it folded to me on the button with 17bb and 66. I didn’t think about it much and decided to iso shove. Villain ended up having 88 and holding. I then was forced to shove 66 an orbit later and lost to AK and JJ.

According to SnapShove, this was the right move, but it’s pretty marginal and while it might slightly be winning money, it’s not a spot I had to take late in the tournament. I need to get better at recognizing those moments and avoiding them.

Short update: Same story. Played, lost more money

Have a coaching session this Thursday and I’m probably going to stop playing on ACR altogether until I’ve thoroughly gone through my game and plugged these leaks. In the meantime I’ll still probably play live and on another site that I have been profitable on to help replenish my losses so far this year.

Hey Alex! Pretty sure I used to play with you a bit at MCC...anyway, best of luck on your journey and I have a good irl friend who streams on twitch and is a very solid coach as well (SnostnLost) who I would highly recommend if you still haven't found what you are looking for. Glgl bud!!!

Hey 1game! Yeah we met at MCC a while back. Hope everything is good with you.

I met Jason at a tournament in Cincinnati. Really nice guy but we haven’t crossed paths since. I would be interested in picking his brain for sure, but I’ve already invested in my current coach so I’ll be sure to reach out to him if I’m not satisfied with my current coach.

Well, I haven’t posted in a while for a couple reasons.

1. I have developed an addiction to Apex Legends and it’s been taking over a lot of my free time Turning the Graph Around: The AlexBalex Story. If anyone plays on Xbox, let me know and we’ll squad up Turning the Graph Around: The AlexBalex Story.

2. The few sessions I have put in have all been losers and I’m out of things to say at this point

To be honest, I’m not studying nearly as much as I set out to. My passion has been dipping this year and I think/hope it’s only because of the downswing?

Regardless, I’m going to be taking a break from ACR for a bit. It’s frustrating because I’m doing well live and on other sites but ACR seems to be my kryptonite. The year has been shredding my bankroll apart so I’m going to “drop in stakes” if you will and stick to the sites/live games that I’ve been more profitable in, lick my wounds and try to get back in the ACR streets again as soon as I feel able.

What’s up guys. Long time no post but I thought I’d poke my head in here since it’s been only like 3 months.

Definitely haven’t played as much over the past 3 months in general. Played a bit more on other sites and have been a small winner. Played some live events (MSPT, WSOP) with nothing to show for them. However, I’ve been playing ACR a little more lately and have been trying to limit myself down to 3 tables or less just to make sure I’m really focused and not just clicking buttons.

For those of you that play ACR, you know they did an update a month or two ago that hasn’t gone very well. So I avoided it for a while but decided to get back in the streets last week. Since then things have been going well. Is it because good players have hated the update and aren’t playing? Are they too busy in Vegas for the WSOP? Does the new software do a better job of preventing bots? Am I actually playing and/or running better?

Who knows? Point is I’m about +$6k this week and confidence is high and the passion is coming back. The timing couldn’t be better because I decided last month that I’m playing the main event this year.

Unfortunately sharkscope doesn’t seem to be tracking since the update, so my graph still sucks. Hopefully they can update everything and we can officially have it heading back in the right direction because it still says -$9k and it should be -$3k. Looking forward to keeping the momentum going and get this thing back in the black.

Took a 5th in the $109 50k tonight for $3k. The graph should be roughly breakeven lifetime but still no tracking since the update Turning the Graph Around: The AlexBalex Story. Also haven’t had my HUD working since the update so not sure I can even look at my graph since January on there.

HM2 HUD on WPN MTT? We are working on that issue and it should be in the next beta. These changes should be available in the next gold beta release. While we do not have an exact date for the release, you will receive a prompt to update once available as long as you have enabled the Settings > General > [x] Prompt for Beta Updates.

You will have to use the Table Finder for each new tourney and each time you get moved to a new table, or you can sign up for the HM3 Beta on our store/site (if you own HM2) and use the HM3 Beta Pre-Release which was working fine for me on WPN MTT when I wrote up the HM2 WPN MTT HUD bug.

I use PT4. I know it’s possible to have it working since the update, my friends were able to get theirs figured out. I don’t rely on HUDs as much so I haven’t really tried too hard to get it working again.
