Trying To Not Suck At Poker 2015, 'Starting' At 10nl Trying To Not Suck At Poker 2015, 'Starting' At 10nl

Hi all

My name's quinn. Im 26, living in Houston, and playing on Carbon. Former philosophy student, avid NBA fan (the Rockets are my team), record collector, and cooking enthusiast. I spent most of last year toying around on Bovada, and a little on Carbon, and was a reg donation station. Some time around Thanksgiving, though, I went ahead and bought PT4, starting perusing 2+2 and DC more frequently, and decided that I would take poker seriously at the beginning of the year.

To start, here's my graph for the year 2015:

Here's the story on how wacky this has been: I started the year with $240 playing 10nl. I promptly won 16 BIs in 6.5k hands, and took my shot at 25nl. Turned out it was a wide open shot, and I won 16 BIs AGAIN, this time in 9.6k hands. Basically ran like Usain in the first month, and finished the month with $770 in my account thru 19.8k hands. Unbelievable!

Then February came. I was breakeven for my first few days, then added some $400 more to my account so that I could start taking a shot at 50nl. I started 50nl off nicely, and was up 7 BIs in 1.6k hands. As I type this, it's really coming into focus how good I was running lol. Anyway, hit a nasty downswing and moved back down to 25nl in 2 weeks; I was down 7 BIs. I promptly lost 14 BIs after moving down to 25nl, but I busted my butt to finish the month up 3 BIs at 25nl. That was one of the hardest things I've done playing poker, and it's not that tough, but it felt like a big accomplishment at the time, so that was nice. Still finished the month down $250, so my roll was at about $850, and I played 26.5k hands, which was a new high for a month.

I was excited for March, had a lot of momentum coming off of my grind back thru the end of February, so how did the month start? With a 14 BI downswing, of course! I very promptly moved down to 10nl - these crazy swings were becoming increasingly more terrifying, so I figured it would be best to start playing a stake where I have lot of BIs. I started 10nl with 50 BIs, and had a lot of ups and downs thru about 35k hands. I finished the month down $293, but played 40.1k hands in the month (which felt like a huge accomplishment), and finished up 2.5BIs on the month at 10nl. Here's a shot of my 10nl graph for the month of March:

I ran pretty bad in 10nl thru my last 10k hands, but I feel like I've been playing some of the best poker of my life, and that's really exciting, though there's definitely room for improvement.

So here we are - I feel like I'm at a point where I'm more or less in control of my trajectory poker-wise. I've made enough BR-related mistakes, made the mistake of not studying enough (it's hard to want to study when you're running like god, easy when you're getting your ass kicked), and made the mistake of not playing enough each month, but am still a slight winner thru nearly 90k hands, which leaves me hopeful that I can beat NL. Now, my goals are:
1 - hit 500k hands this year (planning on playing 45k this month, then 50k every month from May to December, which should get me very close)
2 - finish the year a winning player.
3 - work out more. My metabolism is finally starting to slow down, and I've been pretty thin all my life, don't want to get fat and lethargic.
4 - learn PLO. I've started reading some books and watching some DC videos on the subject. I like the game a lot, and would love to not be terrible at it. I'm starting with 4PLO on Carbon, and hope to play at least 50k hands of Omaha by the end of the year.
5 - finish the year at 50nl.
6 - watch my Rockets hang another championship banner in their rafters this year.

I'm going to do my damndest to post to this blog at least 3 times a week, sharing hands, thoughts, etc. I feel like part of what affects my game mentally is not having enough people in my life to talk to poker with; hopefully, this blog will change that. I'll also end each post with an update on my BR.

CURRENT ROLL: $488.88

I just wrapped up my play for the day, and would like to share some hands I played. I don't think I played my very best, but I also don't think I made too many mistakes. Carbon was down for a while when I first wanted to play, so I played while a little sleepy for a while to make up the time.

This was a bit of a cooler, but not much can be done about it. I felt sort of sick to my stomach when he stacked off otr, and thought for a fleeting moment that I could find a sick fold there, but alas, i lose a buy in here.

In retrospect, I was pretty mad at myself for calling his jam, but I have a lot of history with this villain, and I felt like there were hands that he would take this line with that I had crushed. But even still, should have 3bet pre I think, and then make a decision on the flop about the hand. I'm dumb sometimes.

This turned in to a weird hand, curious what you guys have to think about this:

Just finished playing for a little bit, and had some crazy hands I wanted to share!

This one was really frustrating. This was the first big mistake I made in the session. It was silly to double barrel in to this fish when his flop call is basically a huge red flag. I could have also just flatted pre, or checked the flop - lol, i really messed this one up:

So now I'm stuck a little north of a buy in. Maybe I could have played that hand a little differently pre, but it was a weird spot with a player in between us, and villain is not very good at all. Sigh . . .

So then I'm card-dead or situation dead for nearly an hour, and am starting to get bored and lose hope that some good spots are going to help get me unstuck, and then this hand comes along:

OMG SHIP IT. This hand actually pulled me all the way back in to the green, which I was ecstatic about! + I drew out on a whaaaaale which I enjoy to do and show down soooooooo much!!! Does that make me a bad person? lol

Then this happened. Villain is such a fish and limp-shove annoys me so much (I know being annoyed by it is a mental leak, and I'm trying to work on it), but it was very nice to draw out

That hand was vs a pretty solid reg and I was actually pretty worried that he had an over pair WITH one of my spade outs which would be a super bummer, but lo and behold, he has an over pair with none of my outs, and I'm super happy to bink a river because his SPR is so wacky he kind of has to sigh and stack off.

New Update:

Played a bit sunday, though not as much as I would have liked (2,235 hands. I was hung over most of the day, didn't even jump on until about 7pm central time). Was a bit of a frustrating day - I finished up 38.7 blinds, ran a bit under EV, but played a few interesting hands. Here are a few I'd like to share:

Villain here had a very hi fold to 3b%, so I elected to take a flyer and see if I could make some more money off of him post-flop. I was super fortunate to turn him dead to an out; his flop play left me nauseated about a possible set.

I was bummed to lose this flip:

Villain and I have a lot of history, and he likes to bluff me off of hands a lot, but has also shown down some wacky 2 pair and sets vs me, and his river bet had me a bit scared. On one hand, he will put more chips in the pot with this kind of hand which is good, but otoh he might 3 bet and if he stacks off I'm not 100% happy with calling. Im not sure.

First post in a long time!

So right now, I'm currently behind on my hand goal for the month - goal is 45k and +10BIs. As of this post, I'm at 31.2k hands and +6.8BIs. I got sick (pro tip: if you think chicken is undercooked, don't eat it anyway - salmonellosis is no fun), and didn't play for about 3 days, plus had some birthdays I had to attend, friends in from out of town, and the start of the NBA playoffs, etc etc mistakes mistakes.

My goal is certainly attainable - I just have to play 2.7k hands a day till the end of the month. I know some of you can do that in your sleep, but I'm still learning how to handle increased volume. I can play up to 8 tables at this point pretty adeptly, but struggle to play for more than 2 hours at a time. Since I'm playing this game to win and not to set marathon records, I stop as soon as I feel I'm not going to play optimally, and take a 30 min break at least to cool down mentally. Does anyone have tips for increasing the amount of time you're productive as a player?

This is also the first full month (thus far) that I've used my new setup. Thought I'd include some pictures!

In total, I spent less than $400 on my setup, not including the laptop (though it was only $250!). Though I'm no skilled professional, it was important to me to have a productive work area where screens were high and bright, where I could have a whiteboard. I am not a fan of cascading tables, its easiest for me to have them spread out and big (I have poor vision), so this setup works best for now.

From a studying standpoint, I've been watching threads13 on DC playing 50nl intertops, and he plays very differently from me, so it's been helpful to watch and critically think about the play of others. Those ghost videos have been more helpful than most anything else lately.

Carbon traffic has also been much slower in the last week. At the beginning of the month, there seemed to be 20+ tables of 10nl 6max, and 15-20 tables of 10nl FR. Now, however, it seems like the average has been around 15 tables of 6max, and 10 tables of FR. From what I understand, payouts are slow right now, and some people are playing less or not as all as a result, though I'm optimistic traffic will bounce back. I've grown quite used to the carbon experience, and tried ACR and can't stand the software, so I hope merge business doesn't slow down.

Anyway, here are some hands I've played this month since my last post.

On one hand, I feel like I butchered this hand, but otoh, I was unsure of how to get value out of flopping the nuts lol.
