Hi

I am a cash game grinder of about 4 years. I built a roll from a sub 100 dollar initial deposit, and have now played about 750k hands of no limit with an average EV winrate of about 5bb/100, from 5z - 100 reg. I recently took an unsuccessful shot at 200 reg, and have been downswinging pretty hard since that attempt, booking some pretty significant losses that are piling up day after day. I am very proud of how I am handling it, however, as I think this is the largest string of big losses I have taken, and I am consistently playing composed, thoughtful poker deep into sessions where I am getting buried by the deck, and am forcing myself to play more volume even when sessions are not shaping up well (of course only if I am remaining composed, and continuing to make good decisions separated from negative emotion). I was very blessed to kind of shoot from 25-100 very quickly without much resistance, running well over EV, so no complaints. I find it a challenge to deal with the other side of variance, and I embrace it.

I have decided that this coming year will be the time that the rubber will hit the road for my "career" in poker hahahaha. I am not going to continue languishing at stakes that cannot comfortably allow me to build something for myself, pouring thousands of hours into solver study only to endlessly grind at stakes that aren't meaningful in an objective real world way. In 1 year, (8/12/22), either I will have made 20k with successful 200 shots, or I will hang it up and play the odd big field MTT for the lulz, and devote my time to other things. The good news is, if I put in solid volume, and the cards break my way, this goal is extremely attainable, as I have a relatively sound fundamental game, have good overall discipline, and am improving all of the time. I will give this my best effort, and never struggle to put in hours studying.

my main study tools : SimpleGTO trainer, SimplePostflop, GTO+, Flopzilla, Simple3way

My ONLY game from this point until endpoint next year : NLHE cash (MTT bink could be useful for shortcutting goal, but it is not my specialty, and time that could otherwise be spent studying more cash could be a huge waste of my focus)

can post some study **** / HH from time to time, and will limit to bi-weekly updates

let the heat be with me

current roll : $8280 (peak 10kish)

thanks for the GL

I have only played on ignition, which I would probably not do if I had to do over again, as the benefits are garbage lol.

Glgl. Curious, do you think that there is some noticeable up-step in difficulty from 100 to 200 or just bad timing variance on the shot?

cheers!

200 contains regs that are slightly better than at 100, but both are comparable in terms of skill. I think the only deciding factor, given a strong winrate beneath, is bankroll depth. I chose a shot @ 50bi, I think that is a pretty reasonable depth to shoot it if you are actually going to try to play your game, but your mileage may vary. I am confident in my game, and don`t feel out of my depth @ 200, if you are a reg @ 100, I would not be concerned about the step up in play.

I would like to say that variance is primary cause of loss, but perhaps I am not the most objective party to determine that lol. my loss was also just 9 buyins over 5k hands, which is a nothing swing, but constitutes a healthy % of roll, so I took a step back. Getting better at dealing with the bigger swings, though!

In, GL! How do you go about studying with GTO+? I'm just getting started with it and am wondering if generally it's best to simplify sims to use one flop sizing, or if at least two should be used?

Thanks for the GL!
as to your question

overcomplicating game tree on flop is a pitfall that many players new to solvers fall into. for the most recent trees I`ve built, after much overcomplication over the years leading to inefficient study, I have solved SRP spots especially with 1 sizing preferred, 2 sizings max. I cannot stress how much more important it is to understand turn and river spots on a deep level after cbet call or whatever line.

what I encourage you to do (which is what I have done) is to build a database with the pio 180+ board subset with multiple sizings used on flop in SRP BBvBU for instance, and then subdivide by board texture, and try to group sims together and resolve with a preferred size for study. The more that you can simplify, and find patterns, the better for your game, and the more easily you will be able to execute the strategies from recall.

I use 3 sizings total in SRP, but in any given situation, only try to effectively implement one of them. For instance 100bb deep in SRP BBvBU, I only use overbet on a lot of boards. If you were to use 33% instead, and were to implement it well and consistenly, I don`t think it would matter much to your winrate which flop cbet you chose to use.

Thanks for the answer, I'm still trying to get the hang of working with solvers and it can be overwhelming at times. I don't mean to derail the thread with solver talk, but just one more question if I may:

Say I run a bunch of sims for BTNvBU and give BTN two sizings: 33% and 75%. Then let's say I change my mind and decide I only want to play 75% or check back. Does this mean I have to re-run all the sims with only the 75% sizing to get accurate results for the turn/river strategies?

yes, for turns / rivers you would be well served to re-solve your sims. You can think of the ranges that bet 33% and 75% as different ranges that get to the turn, in the same way that the range that you cold call on the button versus a single raise has different features from the range that you 3-bet on the button given both choices preflop against a sizing that allows cold calls (call range is condensed, whereas 3bet range has more polar characteristics), despite it being the same positional confrontation. removing a size would alter the 75% range`s composition

a lot of edits lol

you're lucky to play on ignition. It's a super duper soft site. I've played 200 zone there, a fair amount of hands and it's equivalent to like 50z on other sites. If you can play ignition, do not switch if money matters

thanks for the advice!

I have heard that rakeback is much better on ACR, but also know that 200 blitz is far tougher. Appreciate the feedback.

Haha yeah I have played a good amount of 200 blitz as well myself and yeah it's really quite tough. I would definitely not recommend switching to acr if you are a decent ignition reg.

Good luck, 20k definitely doable.

think for the duration of this I am going to try to focus heavily on fast-fold, as that is where 2/3 of my total volume online is. Grinding 200z, running well.

Hey if you don't have good preflop ranges, I really would recommend getting some. The KQo 4bet UTG vs SB is very loose. AP, river is too thin.

I am using simple preflop generated ranges, in this preflop scenario KQs is used a lot preflop to 4-bet (UTG open, BTN flat, SB squeeze).
and I just realized that you typed "KQo", but anyway here is a free screenshot

as for post-flop, I agree that it is a technical mistake to 3-barrel it. My reasoning in game was that when SB squeezes to 10bb, he is going to be a weaker player with a likely wider defending range, turn I think there is the decision point where I am quite sure KQs does not want to double barrel, as it is square in the middle of our range and will value cut itself betting a lot. On river, my thinking is that sb can still have QQ/TT 1 diamond, suited broadway Jx getting 3:1 he might have difficulty getting rid of, even though he's not really supposed to call a lot of suited broadway Jx pre lol, and most of these aren't really supposed to get to the river like this.

this does rest on some assumptions which might be incorrect and lead to incorrect adjustments, and it is on it's face a technical error in a vacuum, I agree.

in game SB called with AJo, no diamond

this month starting worse than last, - many buyins down at every stake. getting absolutely cu nted all over the place. no tilt last night to lose my daily 1/2 k tho lol.

doing lots of single raised pot study, not sure how I am maintaining study while this is going on, but just trying to keep head down and grind through.

on -2k swing to 9200 WHERE THAT HEATER IS?
