Swings

Have mostly been playing a bit higher to start the month, I'm definitely not used to the swings but I think that's normal the more people play a new stake, although it's weird playing 50x difference in stakes on occasion.

I may just take the variance free route and grind 100-500 this month and work on volume til my CFP is done.

A few hands:

1.) A little HU 2k action

If you had to select 10 flops for pio study, which 10 would you choose? (I know this isnt the best way to think about it, but curious how you categorize flop textures)

Assume singly raised pots UTG vs CO cc (or what positions/actions would you use in a silo?)

If you had to limit turn sizing to two options, which 2 would you choose?

Hmmm that's a good question but I don't think I can give you 10. I would probably recommend people start with dry rainbow boards (A83) and low paired boards (442) as the standard sizing is 1/3rd whereas a more "complicated" flop would be a two-tone board like J107hhc where you'll see PIO suggest 1/3 but also a ton of flop overbets.

There are definitely a lot of boards like that where I haven't put much work in and sizing can get complicated.

As for your second question, if UTG cbet flop I would choose turn sizing 75% or 120-125%

Interesting, ty. I think a challenge I'm having with my study is applying the same theory to diff textures, even very similar textures, which is why i started thinking categorically. I also think a challenge I'm having is memorizing mechanics instead of understanding theory, for example, I'll see an overbet line on JT7hhc and it makes sense to me, but then I'm lost on QJ8ssd the next day.

Limiting/grouping textures could be the wrong approach, but I have such little time to study these days its likely what I'm going to continue to do.

I spend a lot of time going over that with my students.

My advice is simplify boards in a way that makes sense.

Identify which textures occur with what frequency.

Study the higher frequency occurring spots first.

I don't think there's a wrong approach as for every person there's a studying method that works best for themselves. I think grouping textures is fine.

For me, I haven't done a lot of work on all these textures, (outside of bb defence, where I put in a tonnnnn of work) I just have a good understanding of range vs range dynamics and when to employ overbets vs. 3/4ths etc even on boards I haven't done Sims on.

P.S am not as eloquent with my words as Brokenstars

Thanks for sharing this, pretty cool.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wasn't getting too much traction early on, but got some sun last two days.

Feels quite nice to run good although I did feel a little guilty 5% a whale for a 2k pot. Despite the continued results I am a little bit unmotivated and haven't put in much of a grind or study. All I've done is essentially mark 5-6 hands that I was confused about and ran them in PIO.

So yeah, a bit burnt/a bit lazy this month so far. I do have a vacation in the bahamas next week with my girlfriend to celebrate our first anniversary which will be nice. (Shoutout to WSOP/Total Rewards for the comped rooms)

I am usually very amped to start off the year strong though so I won't kill myself if I don't do too much this month.

A few hands with a little extra analysis than normal!

1.) Spot against fish at 2k. Flop is fine, we could definitely mix in a 75% bet but against this guy who I think will play very fit or fold I prefer the 1/3rd sizing. Turn is a brick, check calling is a disaster of course as well as check folding. I dislike a check/raise as villain will never bet/fold an Ace or King w a gutter. So turn is a clear bet. Given our range advantage/blocking the nuts too we elect to overbet, and being OOP we go for a small overbet. (IP we would go for an even larger sizing)

Given that this guy is fishy/stationy think giving up is fine despite our J blocker (having spades is not great) and I'll definitely want to reduce my bluffing frequency. Against a villain who overfolds, I would probably for a small overbet some of the time along with some 75% sizing.

Unfortunate what he showed down.

(Pre 66%, Flop 80%, Turn 30%)
BB shows 4 T (One Pair, Tens)
(Pre 34%, Flop 20%, Turn 70%)
BB wins 34.93 BB

2.) Bluffcatching spot against reg. Pre and flop very standard, turn is a mandatory call as we can't be folding two pair even to overbets against a competent reg, raising is of course a disaster and isolates his value range so we won't do that. River is a very easy fold, although I took my time in the hand just to make sure.

This is a good concept in relative value, so despite our hand being two pair there is quite a bit of one pair hands I would rather bluff catch with (J9,QJ).

So if I was playing OTB or Truteller HU these hands are going to have to be calls whereas you can safely fold vs most 200/500 regs

Also important to note if you think the villain you're playing with will be more value heavy taking this line.

3.) Last one. Pre is standard. Flop is close-ish between raise and call. In hindsight, probably prefer call against his 66% sizing and no backdoor. Villain just calls, even with the Tc he should be 3betting at a pretty decent frequency. I bet depolarized here and he makes a big mistake by not raising, river is a check with most of my range if I had to guess.

Awsome thread man! About last hand here(A9s). Is river really a range check? Maybe it is, but seems kinda interesting. GL!

Given that this guy is fishy/stationy think giving up is fine despite our J blocker (having spades is not great) and I'll definitely want to reduce my bluffing frequency. Against a villain who overfolds, I would probably for a small overbet some of the time along with some 75% sizing.
Care to explain?

I like your line would likely do the same.

A9ss not convinced its a range check OTR, we still want some bets but I would think to bet quit big and polar. A9ss plays as a good x I believe, assuming villain stabs enough.

I think I did a poor job explaining that last part. I'm assuming a good portion of our range (60-70% would wanna check) so yeah definitely not checking entire range. I'm going to run it to make sure though

Yeah as said def having a betting range as we have some gutshots etc we will want to bluff. If I had to guess we are checking 65%, betting small like 20% and then the rest large sizing with maybe a few bombs as well.

After thinking about it, kinda torn between checking A9 and betting small (Very confident A9ss would be a 1/3rd bet on the river if it did decide to bet, mainly due to blocking some of villains calling range.

I can go in depth in here, but I'll be vague and say we don't have as much 'flexibility' (there's def a better word than this) as IP. I'm also coaching again as I got hired by Bluff The Spot for a trial run as a coach so quite excited about that and don't want to give away infinite strat. Although I never mind if anyone has questions

I wonder when the 5k game ran

As seen, got smacked at 5k tonight denting my month pretty well. The table was pretty good as there was one bad reg and a fish. Unfortunately we lost two big pots to both of them.

But overall, feeling really good. Like I'm playing some gooooddd poker lately so I don't mind getting smacked cause I just feel like it's gonna come back, so confidence is very high atm, and motivation has been rejuvenated because...

Coaching

I got hired by BTS to be one of their coaches and work with the lower guys. Very excited about this as

1.) Got a nice offer to make some money while I'm not playing
2.) Keeps me sharp working with students and will keep me on top of my game
3.) I just love poker, so now I get more time to discuss it with like minded people

If anyone has any questions regarding the CFP as well just drop me a PM as quite a few of you have already.

Off to the Bahamas in 3 days so gonna finish out strong

1.) Sigh. Given reads and you know whale, it's fine I'd say, not the type to turn pairs etc. into bluffs so think Jam is ok

Break Time

Headed off to my first vacation since Vegas (and that's more business with pleasure kind of thing) as I'm heading off to Atlantis in the bahamas for much needed R&R.

I got blasted last few days and am in a 9k downer so this seemed like a nice time to soak up some sun. Games have been great so I'm hoping I'll make most of it back.

I have coaching today which actually had me motivated to prepare and get up early, but other than that have been feeling a little unmotivated regarding not just poker but life, so I'm hoping this will put me on the recharge.

Once I'm back, I have a ton of holiday plans + my birthday is coming up so play time will be limited. I will probably then do a yearly wrap up post and come up with some 2018 goals. I also will bring back this blog for another year, although I have a pretty good feeling that will be the climax of this thread.

Hope everyone else is doing well this month!

A few hands before I go
