I've got a few suggestions for MTTs you should definitely be adding into your sessions, can also PM you those if you like, rather than taking up space in the thread!
Please do send the link for the blog; look forward to following your progress!

Do feel free to post any suggestions in this thread mate, welcome at all times

Lastly hope you had a good session yesterday, will you be grinding more online this year?

Will send that on shortly!

I plan to play most evenings after work as can't always get decent sessions in on weekends, and yes will plan to grind online with a live MTT shot once a week. Won't be playing much or any cash as I find it really boring relative to MTTs, even when I'm winning!

On to MTT suggestions - I saw you were playing things like the $5.50 1000cap and some $5.50 turbos / turbo knockouts, but not that many MTTs overall and not many (if I remember rightly) below that buy-in.

I'm at work atm so havent got the Stars client and apologise in advance that I can't give exact start times or info! This is just my opinion so feel free to ignore it, but IMO you should be playing as many regular-speed MTTs in the $1-$5 range as possible.

I see you said you tend to register SNGs from roughly 2-9pm? This is also UK primetime for MTTs (well, from about 4pm) so you need to make sure you're not missing out. There are things like the $4.40 8max, two $3.30 regular MTTs, $1.10-3.30 6-max MTTs, and quite a few $2.20-4.40 turbos all between 3pm and 6/7pm, not to mention many other similar tourneys. I think I saw you in the $3-4 progressive superknockouts - keep playing those! The two $2.20+R MTTs (regular speed) around 2-3pm and any $2.20+R 500cap are soft and worth playing too.

Obviously prioritise higher buy-ins, but if you are low on tables or SNGs are registering slowly, I strongly recommend the turbo MTTs below $1 with guarantees. This might seem too low to play <$1 with a ~$1k roll BUT the $0.55 and $0.82 turbo MTTs often attract 3500+ players with usually $200+ for first and some of the $0.82s reaching $350+, so a final table can be a nice boost and variance is compensated for by a tiny buy-in.

You should definitely play the Hot $0.55 (9.45pm). Nothing compares to it in the micro-stakes for a small buy-in and (relatively) huge potential prize ($500+ for first). Same story again with high variance and low buy-in, but unmissable really for a shot at a huge ROI. It won't last forever either despite the huge field as it's a turbo (I final tabled it a few weeks back and was only playing until about 1am).

You can tailor this and, for example, play all regulars and leave out some large-field turbos or 6-maxs etc depending on your preference. Even if you don't want to register a large number of them, there are so many quality MTTs you're missing out on.

Can give you more specifics if necessary when home from work but really it's just a case of looking to enter as much as possible between $1-5 even with a roll that also lets you play $5+.

Hope that helps!

Week 6 - (29/12/2014 - 04/01/2015)
(4 Sessions Played)

I kicked off the start to 2015 where I left off with a profitable week . I ended up incorporating mtt's straight away into the session grinds both turbo and regular formats. Unfortunately got no big scores in mtt's and not profiting in them overall however I am confident this will turn around the more I play and study them.

I took a shot on Sunday playing on Full Tilt the $22 MiniFTOPS, $22 Double Deuce, $26 Ceratops as well as Pokerstars The Bigger $22. I did get a cash in the Bigger $22 but this was only start to the year shot attempt so will be avoiding these comps for now.

Week 6 Conclusion

Overall, I am very pleased with how this poker quest is going! To have a bankroll in the four figures and edging closer to $2000 is very satisfying as I now have a bankroll stable for the mtt's I enjoy playing.

You will notice I have managed to play a number of sessions in the past few weeks due to the Xmas period but the holiday is now over . I will be reverting back to weekend only grinding as I have to job hunt/study database skills on my week days.

I will however be studying poker at night as I know there is some improvement needed in my mtt game. Even though the number of sessions is going to reduce, the number of hours spent studying poker will increase which will benefit me in the long term.

Lastly, I am looking into purchasing the following three books maybe by the end of the month.
1. Moorman's Book of Poker by Chris Moorman
2. The Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tendler
3. The Mathematics of Poker by Bill Chen
I won't buy them just yet as I will currently be spending my poker study time analysing my own hands and thoughts and actually get them written down in my own notebook hehe If anyone can let me know there thoughts on these books, be much appreciated!

My next poker grind will be this weekend!

Hey Wilbow, I really appreciate the suggestions mate!

Got to admit, I didn't give mtt's below $1 a second thought but you are absolutely correct about the possible score involved in them so probably add a few in. I probably will avoid the other formats other than full ring as its just about manageable atm lol

I will definitely take a closer look at the lobby before next session for sure!

I agree with you about the cash games, I can never get into the grind of them despite the convenience advantage over the mtts/sngs.

You're welcome! I'm still working on optimising my schedule too - it's easy to forget about the smaller micro buy-ins when your roll is $1k+ and you're playing higher in general, but given the high variance of MTTs and how soft many of the $2, $1 and <$1 MTTs are, they're very useful to lower your average buy-in and get a chance at a nice score relative to the stakes.

Yeah cash games have the convenience which will always be a huge plus for people working full-time like us, but personally tournaments are just a lot more interesting strategy-wise.

Great ROI in the $4.50 180s by the way, 70% over 498 games is great! Obviously its still a small sample but that's an incredible start!

Week 7 - (05/01/2015 - 11/01/2015)
(3 Sessions Played)

Week 7 into this challenge saw yet another profitable week making it 2/2 for 2015. The highlight was my first MTT victory although was in a capped field of 500 for a score of just over $500. None the less, I am sure this will be the first of many MTT scores to follow!

Week 7 also was the first week where MTT's became the main focus of the grind and from the Saturday session onwards I decided to leave out all sng's other than the $4.50 180 man sng to grind. On Sunday I decided to leave out turbo mtt's since I am not profiting well in them and found they were a distraction to my other tables.

My bankroll is very close to the $2000 mark and was in fact lying on $2100 after Friday's session. However I was unable to follow up with a second MTT final table so hopefully will have a $2k screenshot in the next report

I couldn't resist including a screenshot of my first MTT victory of the challenge! I went into the final table 8/9 in chips and had a M of 6 so to come away with the chopped victory was a great result. The reason I decided to chop was because heads up the chip lead had switched twice and despite having a slight chip lead at the point of deal discussion, there was still plenty of play left so was pleased to take the guaranteed prize and end the mtt there.

Week 7 Conclusion

I am very pleased with the direction this challenge is going and despite not a massive profitable week, I am sure some huge scores are around the corner.

My bankroll plan moving forward is as follows
-Regular MTTs maximum $11 buy-in
-Regular MTT rebuys maximum $5.50 buy in
-Pokerstars The Big $22 is the only mtt above $20 I will play
-On Sunday's Full Tilt's The Double Deuce $22 will be played
-$4.50 180 Man Sng's

I have come to the conclusion to not add turbo mtt's as I find they are a disruption in my sessions so it was either them or the $4.50 180's and I am making too much money in the $4.50's to let them go! lol

I doubt I will be playing this weekend as there is still room for improvement in my mtt's I wish to address so will be using my weekend time to go through a thorough hand analysis. Also it is my best mate's birthday so expecting a great night out .

You seem to make bank on the $2.50 90's and $4.50 180's....I wouldn't play any other SNG if I were you. Throw in your occasional Big MTT to take the shots. Granted it is only a little over a month, but the turbos do not seem to suit you right now. If you are not filling enough tables, throw in a $11 KO 180.

Those are all just suggestions of course. Congrats on the success! Keep crushing.

EDIT: I see you already thought the same thing about turbos as I. I didn't read EVERYTHING

No worries, still working on updating it and finishing a few posts before I share the blog, it's still in need of polishing and I haven't had much time to do it recently but will aim to sort it out in the next few days!

The $11 SKOs look great and the super-knockout aspect makes for lots of interesting spots where the bounty on an all-in player can be higher than several payout jumps. From what I've seen though the $11s register slowly (often like 2-3 per hour) and quite a few top grinders play them (but obviously lots of fish too). It's worth playing some to get a feel for yourself of what all those things are like, but the $4.50s are still your best option.

That's cool mate you already got one subscriber right here before its even been published!

Ah that makes sense, was wondering why the payout seemed a bit low. hmm will probably leave them for a few weeks, still need to improve my mtt play. yup $4.50's definitely remaining in my schedule, just I have gone back to starting the grind at 2pm instead of 11.30am but should can still get in a sample of 50 minimum over the 2 weekend days.

Well $4.50s gameplay wise is a more difficult game since post flop decisions is involved however practice makes perfect. Where as with the turbo sngs, I find it boring and don't have the patience to have to play thousands to see some sort of profit lol

Final answer play the $4.50's! lol

Week 8 - (12/01/2015 - 18/01/2015)
(2 Sessions Played)

As you probably can guess a late update means not a great week of poker lol None the less losing sessions makes the end of the road enjoyable to look back on and hopefully this streak wont last long.

So I deposited $50 into 888 Poker. Now I know the point of poker is to be cashing out not depositing but I wanted to add some more smaller buy in mtt's into the schedule. Full Tilt same applies but quite convenient I can just transfer from Stars the required amount needed and transfer back etc. So my additional screenames are as follows.

888 Poker - thegreatdonk
Full Tilt - thegreatestdon

Initial Bankroll =
$506.89(Pokerstars) + $50(888 Poker) = $556.89
Bankroll Before Week 8 = $1934.10
Bankroll After Week 8 = $1507.14
Total Profit for Week 8 = $-476.96
($50 deposit to 888 treated as a loss)
Total Profit for 2014 (Challenge Onwards) = $889.68
Total Profit for 2015 = $60.57

17/01/2015 - 19.30 $5.50 1R1A (83/666) for $20.95
17/01/2015 - The Big $5.50 (885/7020) for $9.12

First session on 888 Poker resulted in my only final table of the weekend. Not a bad start just a shame I was unable to take down the first place finish. The $115 for 5th however provides more than enough to play the small 888 Poker mtt's for the time being.

Week 8 Conclusion

Obviously it is never nice to encounter a loss however I think my discipline has improved somewhat. Going into Sunday I reduced the amount of mtt buy-ins getting rid of $11 freezeouts, $5.50+R, $3.30+R as I know my bankroll would be hit massively if encountered another losing session.

In terms of how I played, Sunday a bit of tilt crept in because of Pokerstars tables freezing and I blinded out of someone without noticing! However I still kept my cool just spewed off a few mtts in random spots which I will be analysing before my next session.

I am not concerned with this recent downswing as my bankroll is still healthy but I shall think twice before adding back higher mtt buy-ins even if the bankroll grows.

Unlucky to hit a nasty losing week but that's all part of the journey!

As you can see you've lost ~$750 on MTTs and that's a considerable amount (but obviously not as bad as it could have been) especially seeing as for the first few weeks you were only registering a small number them like the Bigs and Sunday Storm. That's not being criticial, far from it - more emphasising the sickening nature of MTT variance.

Basically, you can never have enough buy-ins! I've been in the exact situation as you quite a few times in the last few months with a $1.5k roll and even playing pretty conservatively (but not conservatively enough) BR-wise and still lost most of it.

I would suggest something like 400x ABI, which seems over-conservative but it really isn't. Even many great runs to the top 5% of the field will still see your BR decrease unless you hit some final tables and that's tough in Stars' large fields. You can easily play with fewer buyins but swings will massively affect your BR (even with say a 200x ABI roll).

So with ~$1.5k you can still enter some of the $8s, $11s, etc as long as your average BI is about $4. Make sure you're entering as much as possible below $5 as well to lower the ABI. It's a perfect roll to continue with the 4.50 180s but just watch your average buy-in each session.

The 400 ABI (rather than say 200 ABI) roll allows more comfortable play to overcome a different kind of variance - for example if you run well and make profit in $2 MTTs but you lose money in the $11s. I think this is often overlooked by many players as they don't consider this when using an average buy-in.

Looking forward to the next update!

As always Wilbow appreciate the feedback!

Agree with your comments above with regards to the variance. I have to admit my MTT performance have errors which are contributing to the losses also. Thanks for your input will check my ABI before i commence this weekend's grind as I know it reached $8 when I was on a $2k roll.

Thanks mate, wishing you well with your journey also

Also, I was a victim of the stars tables freezing which you mentioned, and didn't play for a few days after that. Email them about it and ask for a refund for any affected games (Even when I was checking for any frozen tables, I still had several 45-mans where I'd gone from top 3 stack with 15 left to bubbling in 8th-9th because of the freezing and in that case they refunded some buy-ins). Worth a try.

Week 9 - (19/01/2015 - 25/01/2015)
(2 Sessions Played)

Unfortunately, it was yet another losing weekend of poker for me . However it was a contrast of two performances in the two sessions I played. Friday's session I have to admit was probably one of my worst performances yet. Was very annoyed when I hit bed that night and decided to spend Saturday studying Poker both as a punishment and to analyse/spot some mistakes from Friday's session! Felt really good and was fresh going into Sunday's session and was pleased with how I played just no scores or profit to show for it.

None the less here are my results for week 9, my all time mtt profit is very close to $-1k!!! I'm not too bothered money wise with these losses as I am developing my game looking at my hand histories although at an expensive price lol All that matters is what the profit is showing by the end of the year.

Initial Bankroll = $506.89(Pokerstars) + $50(888 Poker) = $556.89

Week 9 Conclusion

Annoying, annoying, annoying!!! However I did work/analyse on my game and spotted at least three leaks. Need to analyse again before I grind this weekend but will be playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In terms of the bankroll, still healthy despite this bad streak. Will be playing my current schedule regardless all three days and not deterred with my current losing run. However come Monday will re-evaluate and if bankroll does drop below $1000 then it will be back to sng grind only leaving out MTT's.

Like always, good luck at the tables but just watch out for me as I am more determined than ever!

Ah, lesson learned. Should this happen again, will do just that. Nice to hear you got some refunds lets just hope it was a one off with the Pokerstars software.

Week 10 - (26/01/2015 - 01/02/2015)
(4 Sessions Played)

Another frustrating week of poker where I might as well have copied and pasted previous report with updated figures lol. Well there were actually a number of positives although not demonstrative in the results.

1. Returned to the gym for 3 sessions and definitely felt good going into the poker sessions
2. Played four straight sessions/days. Positive in the fact I felt I played a very good standard throughout and concentration/less tilt improving for sure. Maybe negatives of this was my wanting of a score and not a nice feeling knowing played more poker than I should have.

Week 10 Conclusion

Ten weeks into the challenge and I am still committed with this thread and challenge. Even though my results not showing my improvement, I am seeing it for myself and I am in strong belief the MTT scores will come. Like always will keep positive and keep going. Maybe this weekend I will play just the Saturday and Sunday and got some plans for the next few weekends so won't be a crazy poker month lol

One final table and a 11th place in MTT's to carry on a very frustrating spell but will make my future success all but sweeter. A nice little profit in the $4.50's this week which keeps the bankroll going.

Congrats on the epic bink in the 8.80! I FTd it the day before (but went from 4/10 to come 9th) and wasn't far off the FT the day you binked. Give us an update!

That $4.50 graph just keeps going up and up and up doesn't it!

Sub'd and definitely gonna pay attention to this thread. I love stats and tracking how I'm going. You should see my own Excel spreadsheet and that's just for me as a student and only playing $0.25 45s when my studying allows

Keep it up!

PS. Either of you on Skype? donaa/wilbow
