i just finished studying
Part 5: Whether to Bet or Check in Position of Applications...
1. when planning to bet 3 streets for value, we want a bluff:value ratio of about 2.5-3:1 on the flop, and when planning to bet 2 streets for value, we want a bluff:value ratio of about 1:1 on the flop
2. the OOP player must showdown with about 16% of his flop checking range if we bet 3 streets, and he must calldown with about 29% of his flop checking range if we bet 2 streets. we can use this while looking at his starting range to get an idea of how strong our hand must be in order to look for extra streets of value
3. if we determine that we want less than 3 streets of value, we have to decide which streets to go for. how vulnerable our hand is to being outdrawn on the next card has a big impact on whether we want to get immediate value or delay.
4. the best hands to choose as bluffs are ones that have little showdown value, have robust equity, and have the ability to turn additional equity (so that we can continue bluffing)
5. sometimes we might want to check back with a super strong hand. only consider this if we have low vulnerability and if we block a large portion of the villain's range we'd be targeting for 3 streets of value. this will usually only be the case on really dry flops. against strong opponents, we may need to work in some strong check/backs on wet boards to avoid turn overbets on blank cards.. however, that's probably nothing to worry about in the live low stakes player pool
6. finally, when we face a flop check-raise, we need to continue with the following frequencies: 50% on the flop, 67% on the turn, 63% on the river... for a combined showdown of about 21% of our flop betting range. keep in mind that this is against an optimal opponent who is 3betting a polarized range and at the proper ratios. many live players will be 3betting more of a tight/linear/value-heavy range, so our defending frequencies will be lower
the entire chapter was pretty easy to make sense of and understand, however, i did have one major question of how to apply it in real time. i posted that question in the thread to the book. im excited to hear the answer...
