First of all i'd be 2x'ing instead of 2.5x'ing late in a tourney. Given the exact scenario it depends on sb reads obv but for an absolutely random opponent (no age, no ethnicity, no hand history) id likely call off with all pairs, AT+, KJ+ is fine. Adjust one way or the other depending on reads, icm, etc.

Thanks.
I think you are pretty similar to my calling range only difference I would cutoff at A10+. If you think small blind is an amateur player he may have a tighter range. An amateur shoving close to the money is usually a premium hand like AJ+. An experienced pro could be shoving wider based on his impression of your calling range. Just something to think about.

Could hv been a $1500 day if it wasn't for the 2 outer otr! Instead +$460, and it feels like I lost. #Weird
Oh well, be back at it tomorrow. Keep showing up.

2 outer hand: 2/5/10nl (mandatory winner straddles $10).
It was my straddle, I call $30 more w K10 in position. 3 way to flop of 2K6. Initial preflop raiser makes it $75, player 2 calls $75, I raise to $450. Player 1 has $400 total and calls, player 2 ($800 total) tank folds. Pot is $1K ish. Turn is 10. River is 6. I show top 2, and he turns over 68.
I shrug it off like a boss/Not even a sweat/not my first rodeo/Been there done that.

Real talk: Actually I can't stop thinking about it!!! I was reminded today what 4% and getting there feels like.
Damn, I could hv gotten my check engine light fixed w that extra $1k!

Bright side: running better, 7 winning sessions in a row. Blessed in life.

I wish everyone success in life, and to make the most out of the hand your dealt. Fight like champions. Gl

Subscribed. Great thread, OP. I have a similar PG&C thread. I'm a Christian, the father of a 3 year old boy, saving up for a new house, and some of my family have a hard time with the fact that I play poker semi-professionally. I also play 1/2 and 2/4 but online mainly.

Glad to see you are having success. Will definitely be following. God bless!

Left isn’t always best!
I thought seat changing to his right might b more profitable on the short term…

The other day I was playing with a super agro player that was playing a lot of hands and raising many of them. I was playing on his left for a few hours, and it was going good; but I saw sm opportunity that playing to his immediate right might acquire. For instance, sm traps plays, check/calling plays, ch/raising plays; but more than anything my mission was to set a Big Bear Trap.

I didn’t want to play on his right the whole session because the trap play I wanted to set up wd prob only work once. So I decided to wait for my last couple hrs grinding until I moved to his right. The plan was to set a big bear trap on this aggressor.

So finally the seat opened up and I was nearing the last couple hrs grinding, I decided to go ahead and make the switch. I told the table mates that I wanted a better view of the tv, but I had no clue what was on. Now I’m on Mr. Uber Aggro’s immediate right, and patiently waiting for a big hand to execute the plan! In the meantime I didn’t want Uber to know I was playing tighter on his right, so I decided to show him a 3 hi bluff in one hand against him. I hate showing, but I knew it wd b gd for my table image when I was ready to execute the “Big Bear Trap Hand”.

A session comes down to 2 or 3 keys hands. This is mine from the sesh…

After an hour in the seat, I take a peek, and see 2 black cowboys. This is the one I was waiting for, the whole reason I switched seats…”The Big Black Bear Trap” hand! It was also perfect timing as Mr. Uber was otb w a $10 straddle. If I cd have, I wd hv backed up the truck and bet it all that Mr. Uber Aggro was raising his straddle!

I’m in the cutoff ($500 stack) and 6 limpers to me. I limp w KK, and Mr. Uber Aggro right on cue makes it $40 otb. Of course, many limpers were prepared to the call raise. They shd know by now if they play a hand, they shd b prepared to call a raise from Uber Aggro. 5 callers of $40 before it gets back to me, and I pause for a bit making it look like a squeeze play before I shoved $450 more. Mr. Uber Aggro folds very quickly, but 2 others call for less. The Bear Trap has been set, and yielded a $1400 pot!

Board: 10 J Q…6…A

Sidenote: cant make vegas this year. Can barely log hours here. crazy busy packing crap up, moving crap to storage, taking other crap to Goodwill, and throwing sm crap away. Great hand. Thats what I was waiting to hear. I anticipate many many more big winning sessions in the near future. I almost had a reason to fly to Louisville to visit my sister and take a seat in the 5-10-20 nl at the Horseshoe this weekend, but her fiance's health has improved and im no longer needed. Vegas will always be there. For now focus on the tasks at hand and continue to improve. Best of luck.

@ashberj glad to see your future bro-n-law’s health has improved! BTW, the 5-10-20 game is just pure sick. A player they call “Allstate” straddled $1300 last week and woke up w KK. The other player who called the straddle had 88. The flop K83…. I been staying away until I have a nice roll again.
@boileref it was a pleasure meeting u n Cincy. I wish u all the best! I saw where the WSOP circuit will be there in Cincy March 2015. I remember last year it was HSI, Cincy, Hammond (back to back to back). This year HSI and Hammond r back to back in October, but Cincy not til March. Keep grinding man, and playing great every hand!

Today was a top 5 session of the year!
I have always said, a sesh comes down to 3 key hands that will make u or break u.
Today’s 3 key hands…

The day started off by me being the very first no limit player to enter the poker room. Table 12 got going around 10am as I took seat 4 for a little 1/2 no limit. The table soon filled with the same people I see on a regular basis, and a couple I see monthly, and 1 Asian I have never seen before. The middle aged Asian man bought in for $100 and lost it in one orbit. Then he bought in for another hundo, and lost it an orbit later. His day ended less than an hour. The open seat was filled by an Asian lady in her 60s. This lady loves the action, and pretty much lives at the boat. She mostly plays the table games, but every now and then she will frequent the poker room. She bought in for $200, and built it up to $500 fairly quickly. For the first 30mins she was hitting the deck AND getting paid off. 200 to 500 in short time. My big hand of the 1/2nl session actually came against her.
Hand 1: We both were playing $500ish stacks, and I make $8 w KK in middle position. Sometimes I make it more depending on the line up, but w these table mates I fig $8 wd induce sm action. The table was pretty nitty for the most part, and If I was at a table that I thought $20 wd get me a couple callers, then I wd hv bet $20. This table, $8 seemed like the play for me. It was folded to Lady Asian who 3 bets to $50 in the blind. I hv played w her many times, and 3 bets from her are always Aces, Kings, or Queens! I call and pretty much know what I’m up against. The plan was to tread lightly and play it cautiously otf. I know if the flop comes 10hi dry, then im just calling hoping she has QQ, or same hand. I am prepared to just call flop, turn, and river on dry boards and pray she has QQs! I am never raising unless I improve. So $100 in the pot and the flop rolls K84 rainbow. YAHTZEE NUTZ! She open shoves!! I repeat...she open shoves!!! Really…Open shoves $450! Merry Christmas me…I call! People play so bad its mind boggling. #easygame KK>AA

The Wednesday 2/5/10 got started around 3p, so I cash out 1/2nl with a nice +$610 in the black.

Hand 2: 2/5/10nl (winner straddle). At this point I am down $500 in 2/5/10, but still playing gd, staying disciplined, and fighting. I been playing every hand the best I can play it, but not finding any gd spots, gd flops, or hands to continue w. I just kept folding and bleeding off chips little by little. But in this game it just takes one big hand to get u back, so I’m not panicking. I decided not to re-up to 1K, and just grind the $500 stack. Over the next hour, I won a couple of solid hands and climbed back to around $750. Then I was faced with a crucial hand that could either make me or break me. Here it is…I limped with 810, preparing to call a raise. (I think I only saw a couple limp pots in the 3 total hrs I played. The Wed 2/5/10 plays pretty tough at times, and tons of 3 betting pre. Lots of gd players in this game every week.) Villain makes it $40, folded to me, I call $40 in position. The villain is a 40smthing regular w a wide range, and loves to splash around. He is very gd putting pressure on opponents, and is very hard to pinpoint his range. He can get a little out of line at times, and find himself in bad spots. Overall, mixes it up well, gd attitude win or lose. I just try to stay on my toes against him while paying close attention to see if I can pick up on anything (behavior, tells, betting tells, what he says, etc. etc.).
Me: $750 stack 810 Villain: $1500 stack
The pot is $100ish, heads up to the flop of AK5. He bets $75, I call. The turn is an 8. He bets $250, and I shove it all. He tanks for a long time, and I’m trying to sit stoically. While he asks for a total, pondering his decision to call $400ish more, I’m trying not to swallow or piss down my leg. I stay very still and quiet on the outside, but nervous as all get out on the inside . I been witnessing Villain bluffing a lot in the session, and was really hoping this was one of those times. Well apparently not, as he continues to tank. After awhile he picks up some chips then puts them back nearly giving me a heart attack. Damn…that was close as I just cont to sit w blank face. Then after a long tank he tosses them into the muck, and said he folded AQ. The nerves left my body, and euphoria sets in. Now I’m back w a $1100 stack, and the chest a little bigger after getting the semi-bluff through.

Hand 3: 2/5/ 10nl Me: $1200ish 88
3 limps to me, and I limp w 88 in mp. It gets raised to $50, 2 callers before I call. The guy on my left, limp/3bets to $200, and all who’s in for $50 also call the $200. $1k+ pot 5 players heading to a flop of Q89. First player who acts open shoves his last $700ish, I just call, the limp/3better folds, other guy tank folds. Villain shows Q10 for top pair, gut shot, backdoor flush draw. Q on turn. Brick river. I ship a big one! $2400 pot. (+$1500)

Cashed out 2/5/10 with a nice +$1,688 in the black.

10a-6p today yielded a +$2,298 profit. 5th best session of 2014!!!:cake:

+ $4,850ish in June so far, and it couldn’t come at a better time. I’m not gonna get too overjoyed by this month, for I know from experience poker can humble u very quickly. Even Keel/Level Headed is the best approach.

Appreciate you guys giving me this platform to keep me focused and playing my best. Because of this thread, I truly feel my game has elevated over the last couple of years. Mucho Gracias.

@seamsclean my only goal this year is do better than last year. Thanks for all the positive posts!

I’m writing this post as I sit on the floor of my empty house. All of our belongings have been moved to storage. Well almost everything…we still have an air mattress on the floor, and flat screen lying up against a wall. 11am tomorrow we have to be out of here.

It’s a crazy feeling leaving smthing where so many memorable moments have been made. Moments like: my 11yr old getting on the school bus for the first day of kindergarten, my 3yr old learning to walk, talk, throw fits, provide laughter; and countless more. Oh the memories of this home. Tonight I will pray that the Lord will bless this home for the next family as He has for us.

It’s a new chapter in my life, and ready for more awesome memories in our next home. I suggested moving to Cincinnati, Chicago, Florida, or even an island with a booming poker; but I got shut down from all fronts. No worries, I totally understand, we have pretty much established our lives here. My oldest daughter has formed great friendships, and is really fond of her school. My life partner has a job she loves, and enjoys having her family nearby. I also have the rental properties, and many competitive tennis partners here. I think my 3 yr old was on board for some island hopping, but other than that it just seems fitting to stay planted in the same school district…We moved 4 miles away.

Well I haven’t played a poker session since I booked a solid sesh last Wednesday for +$2300. It came a great time because I needed couple days off to move. The big score gave me that opportunity, and the last few days I been crushing at my life tasks. Even the life jobs don’t provide an income, it sure is rewarding. Surely can’t wait to get back to felt, and competing. I need competition like Luis Suarez needs a shoulder to bite.

Do you think calling the limp raise of $200 total with 88 can be profitable?

Thanks man. U r correct it has been crazy lately. the run gd has helped matters tremendously!
Gd question about my 88 hand (post#1289). To b clear, I am never calling an open raise for $200 w 88 in a 2/5/10 game w $1200 stack. Never ever!
The 88 hand in question, I limped for $10, the guy to my left limped, then it got raised to $50, 2 callers of $50, then I call the $50. The guy to my immediate left limp/3bets to $200. 3 players call the $200 before it gets to me. Pot is $800+, and I am never folding for $150 at this point w any hands. Although, If I knew it was going to b to $200 from the jump I wd hv just folded. I got in too deep and I couldn't fold.
W low to medium pocket pairs I will call any amount preflop if I know I can get 10x(bet) if I flop a set. If stacks aren't deep enough to get 10x, or I don't think I can get 10x from a player(s) then I fold. It's just not profitable calling big bets when flopping sets only happens 1 out of 7.5 times UNLESS i think i can capitalize by winning 10x(bet).
Appreciate the questions. Gl

Very happy to hear everything is going so well for you Ray. Your positive attitude is always so motivating for me as I read through this thread. It takes such a strong person to be able to survive the highs and the lows of being the professional grinder, and you sir are that person. Kudos to you Ray, and keep up the good work.

Hopefully I'll see you up at the boat soon. I haven't been playing all that much lately (bit of a brutal run bad streak :/ ) but did make it up Sunday. Got the short end of the stick, lost 3 allins (79 on 810J34 board vs Q9...wtf, then AK < A5 and AK < A8 but thats poker), but was at the dream table!! Tons of straddles and a couple 2/5 regs sat down and splashed around. Got there around 1 and it was awesome, can't wait to get back grinding and in the routine again.

Keep crushing, GLGLGL.

Man @TSW that means a lot coming from u! We only played together one time, and from just those few hrs I think highly of ur game! Players like u shd play more! Don't worry about those 3 hands. Ones a cooler, and the other is just variance rearing it's ugly head! The more u play it all evens out. Keep grinding and playing great ALL the time EVERY HAND!

Today's Recap:
Lost -$191 at 1/2nl on 3hrs today. Lost a big one on a bad misread. A guy straddles $7 otb, and 5 limps to me n CO w AJ. All stacks r $300ish (+-75). I raise to $40. The straddler who is usually stubborn and never lays his straddle down to any raises puts out a messy $65. Dealer makes him complete the raise, so it opens the action back up. All players fold to the button 3bet of $75ish. I thought for sure this was a total accident by the button, so I shove $375ish total. He has $300 total, and I'm thinking I have the best of it. Board is 47796, and sheepishly show AJ. He turns over the gd ole Alcoholic Anonymous (AA). I guess I was okie-doked on that one!!!

The 2/5/10nl got going around 2p, and I ran like Gump. My big winning hand was when I made it $35 utg w AQ. 4 callers. Stacks ranged from $1200-$1600. The flop was 810J. BB checks, I make it $55 w a double gutter nut flush draw. HJ calls, BB ch/raises to $125. I thought about reraising but this particular player (Neal) is never folding. I'm thinking he has at least 2pair, and if so I'm a slight dog (43ish%). Plus w HJ calling I'm thinking he cd b on sm sort of flush or straight draw as well taking sm of my outs away if I did decide to reraise BB. Therefore, it's very possible I'm even lower dog (less than 40%). Sidenote: A lot of times when I'm counting outs I usually go one less than what is actual. I do this for many different reasons. Mostly because when it's heads up, and I think I may hv 15 outs to win, I will usually do the math based on 14 outs (1less). I hv to think w the 7 other players that get cards, that at least one of my 15 outs is the the muck for sure. So I always take one out off for gd measure.
Anyways back to the hand. After BB ch/raises to $125, I decide not to reraise this big draw and just call. HJ also calls. The pot is $510ish, and the turn is a big brick 2. BB bets $350 w $510 behind. I call, and HJ folds. (Damn I was hoping HJ was calling!) oh well, I still knew if I hit I was getting the rest of it from the BB. $1210ish pot heading to the river. River brings the most beautiful K I have ever seen. Jeepers I just rivered nuts!!! BB checks, I shove my last $600, he calls his last $510. A Big pot of $2230ish gets shipped me way! 810J2K.
+$1895 in 2/5/10 This is what it looked like...
