Think it is too soon to declare it terminal or not, but we are in early stages of another major shift on scale similar to, but much faster pace, the transformation from agrarian to industrial societies. At one point, 80% of people earned a living somehow connected to food production. Today it is about 2%. Those 78% others needed to transition to other lines of work.
Coal miners and horse buggy builders are not coming back.
2 biggest factors in my opinion;
Due to leaps forward in technology, economies will have have to confront that at some point very soon there will not be enough full time work that we were used to the previous century. We will need new systems of wealth management to prevent dangerous imbalances in quality of life between the haves and have not. Otherwise the have nots will become such a huge percent of the whole that really bad things may happen.
Second thing is climate change.
I'm summary; change is happening and will always be a bumpy ride.
