Hi 2+2,
This is my second time of writing this post. There's a lesson in that; never give up, and always save your progress! And I'm also not the fastest composer of a piece of writing.
Can I make it in poker?
There's not much information to go on, so let me fill you in with some.
I started playing poker at school. We used to have little one-table competitions in the dorms, playing for a fiver or a tenner. It turned out that I was quite good at it because I won more than my share of tournaments, and quickly understood the theory of poker and was willing to read around a little bit.
At university I was the guy with the car. So I used to take a few of the guys who were into poker to the local casino. My first night I booked a £700 win, which was pretty nice. I then made some smaller wins and losses. I never kept a record all the way throughout, so I don't know even what my overall score was. I didn't study much, but still came out with a reasonable degree in the end.
I had spells playing online, some good, some bad. I probably played as high as 200NL once or twice. There was one time when I grinded about 100$ into 500$ at 5NL, after which I went on a bit of a downswing.
My twenties were a tough decade, filled with lots of false starts. To make a living, i turned my hand to private tuition. I was in and out of hospital though due to the onset of the symptoms of a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder.
I've made it through though, and am 14 months out of hospital, but now I have hardly a penny to my name. Recently I deposited £10 on Pokerstars, ran it up to 50$, and now it's 35$.
When it comes to my poker game, I believe my strength is my intelligence, and depth of understanding. My weakness is thinking fast enough.
I've played Zoom and can handle 3 tables, but 2 tables feels better as I pick up on more bluffing spots etc.
I'd love to hear from you guys if you have any advice on time scales etc. Words of encouragement or words of wisdom. Even discouragement I will listen to.
I have a lot of time on my hands, because I don't work a regular 9 to 5. Poker suits me quite well, as it's just a matter of flicking the computer on. It's sad to say, but because of my health, poker is my last chance to make it in any way.
My intention is to grind Zoom 9 handed, and get myself up to 200NL as quickly as possible, and try and make a nice hourly. I have high hopes that one day I might be able to buy a house and drive a fast car. I do want that for my life. The major question mark is probably over my dedication, because I've gone through lots of 'phases' in my life in getting into one thing or another. Not to sound arrogant, but I've always been quite good at whatever I turned my hand to, be it academia, or sports.
But I've been a fool many times, and I hope I'm not being a fool again here. I'm putting my neck on the line, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say.
BTW, I know the question is a little silly as it depends on how much work, dedication etc. I am willing to put in, but still, 2c for your thoughts guys, I'd love to hear from you.
