Hi 2+2,

This is my second time of writing this post. There's a lesson in that; never give up, and always save your progress! And I'm also not the fastest composer of a piece of writing.

Can I make it in poker?

There's not much information to go on, so let me fill you in with some.

I started playing poker at school. We used to have little one-table competitions in the dorms, playing for a fiver or a tenner. It turned out that I was quite good at it because I won more than my share of tournaments, and quickly understood the theory of poker and was willing to read around a little bit.

At university I was the guy with the car. So I used to take a few of the guys who were into poker to the local casino. My first night I booked a £700 win, which was pretty nice. I then made some smaller wins and losses. I never kept a record all the way throughout, so I don't know even what my overall score was. I didn't study much, but still came out with a reasonable degree in the end.

I had spells playing online, some good, some bad. I probably played as high as 200NL once or twice. There was one time when I grinded about 100$ into 500$ at 5NL, after which I went on a bit of a downswing.

My twenties were a tough decade, filled with lots of false starts. To make a living, i turned my hand to private tuition. I was in and out of hospital though due to the onset of the symptoms of a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder.

I've made it through though, and am 14 months out of hospital, but now I have hardly a penny to my name. Recently I deposited £10 on Pokerstars, ran it up to 50$, and now it's 35$.

When it comes to my poker game, I believe my strength is my intelligence, and depth of understanding. My weakness is thinking fast enough.

I've played Zoom and can handle 3 tables, but 2 tables feels better as I pick up on more bluffing spots etc.

I'd love to hear from you guys if you have any advice on time scales etc. Words of encouragement or words of wisdom. Even discouragement I will listen to.

I have a lot of time on my hands, because I don't work a regular 9 to 5. Poker suits me quite well, as it's just a matter of flicking the computer on. It's sad to say, but because of my health, poker is my last chance to make it in any way.

My intention is to grind Zoom 9 handed, and get myself up to 200NL as quickly as possible, and try and make a nice hourly. I have high hopes that one day I might be able to buy a house and drive a fast car. I do want that for my life. The major question mark is probably over my dedication, because I've gone through lots of 'phases' in my life in getting into one thing or another. Not to sound arrogant, but I've always been quite good at whatever I turned my hand to, be it academia, or sports.

But I've been a fool many times, and I hope I'm not being a fool again here. I'm putting my neck on the line, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say.

BTW, I know the question is a little silly as it depends on how much work, dedication etc. I am willing to put in, but still, 2c for your thoughts guys, I'd love to hear from you.

Hey, mate.

Look: there're a loooooooooot of things we can suggest. I mean, I lot! Therefore, I'll suggest only some things for now, but I think you'll have a great start if you follow them (although it's just my opinion, all right?) :- )

1) Don't play 9 handed. The reason is: as you move up, you'll have to change to 6max anyway, therefore that's no reason to not collect experience at 6max right now. I'd suggest to you play nl2z 6max.

2) Follow a solid bankroll management. Seriously, I can't emphasize it enough: follow a very solid bankroll management with discipline. You'll receive a lot of opinions here, but I think you should move up and move down when you have:

Nl2: 20 BI's
Nl5: 30 BI's
Nl10: 40 BI's
Nl16: 50 BI's
Nl25: 60 BI's
Nl50: 70 BI's
Nl10: 80 BI's

3) Play a solid poker, but as simple as possible. I'll suggest you to see some videos of a incredible nl100z player from my country. He'll not speak english, but you can at least see the videos without sound and trying to understand how simple he plays at micros. Just try to play something around that style for now. He's playing a very simple game here without a HUD, and he'll post all the sessions' results. Just watch all these videos and try to understand the "logic" of his style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cofb...TkvNu&index=16

4) Don't look to your results while you're playing the session. If you're playing, you're playing. Give your best.

Been playing a little recently. I think I got a bit tilted in a hand today. I was dealt KQ at a 6max table UTG. Made it 3x to go and got a couple callers. Flop was KT6 with two clubs. I cbet and got raised by the guy on the button. I called. Turn was a blank. I checked and villain bet 1.20$ into 1.40 and I went all in for about 3.70$. Villain calls and has 66 for the set. There are a few draws that the villain could have had, but I still feel a bit disappointed with the way the hand went. I should have probably released the hand on the turn - I probably overplayed it somewhat.

So I'm taking a break for a little time at least.

Do you have an explanation to your move on the turn? Well, anyway, i agree with almost everything Giovanni said.

Have more hands than you, play at higher limits. its hard to find the fold button here, but going all in on the turn was a mistake. Just my opinion.

I have schizophenia myself and playing poker for your sole source of income is silly unless your making a lot more than your current employment. Why can't you work a job?

Hi guys,

Turning back to poker now. Started playing again Monday. It's been quite swingy but I'm up a little.

Going to carry on playing 10NL for the time being. Hoping to make some buy ins and then move up to 25NL. I buy in for the minimum.

Got 0 living expenses and time on my hands - no full time job. So why not give it a go?

Started a youtube channel for the fun of it. Latest video link here:

What's up 2+2.

Just been reading a few threads. One on how hard it is to crush online poker now. A tad depressing, but I think it was slightly overstated. I think it's hard to do, but there are always going to be more people saying it's difficult; maybe the people that do crush don't say a lot and are fewer in number.

So I tried teaching in a school. I decided to give it up. I'm back to tutoring a little. Got no real bills to pay; live with my aunt and no gf to take care of.

I'm kinda cool with the way things are. I'm no success. I think I've been lacking conviction - had so many false starts in my adult life - compounded by episodes of psychosis which f*** your life up. Life certainly hasn't turned out the way I had imagined it. But I give credit where it's due now, which I didn't before. To God be the glory.

As a side note, today I benched 3 plates. I've seen that I can do well with the weightlifting if I apply myself. Previous best 147.5kg and I'm chasing that down. Bodyweight ~ 210 lb. Trying intermittent fasting to get that down.

It's time to hit the accelerator and see where it takes me. Like the weightlifting, I know that the best workout is the workout you do. I've got into a routine with that - and am benefitting. So I'm gonna set some consistency goals. I'm thinking ~30 hours a week. Grind Omaha 5-6 hours a day. I think that's reasonable. Then play tourneys on Saturday.

It's all about creating the habit. I've created good habits with the exercise, so no reason I can't do the same for poker. It's really time to give it my all.

Here's a graph for funz. I've been running mostly good since I started. I'm playing at 5$ buyin, omahaha. I could play a lot higher, but I want to get good before I move up, and I figured, might as well start at a limit where I don't give a f*** about the money; should help me play better.

Played for 4 hrs 51m today. Just one table Omaha, 646 hands.

Was going very well till I had QQ against flopped trip 3s; the guy had 3bet pre with low connectors and hit hard on the flop. Lost about 8, 9 $ that hand.

Realised I was tilting a little bit because of that, so thought I would call it a day, slightly ahead. Accumulated just a little too much scar tissue at that point. Will come back to it fresh tomorrow. I think that'll give it enough time for the wounds to heal.

On a positive note I've booked wins 5/6 days I've played. Basically running really good. I'm looking forward to the future. I watched the Pokerstars short video on Alex 'Kanu7' Millar for inspiration. He went to the same university I did.

Trawled the forum for a while this evening. It seems like good information is hard to come by. Watched Phil Galfond on youtube which was quite good.

I'm reading Harrington on Cash Games at the minute. There's some good information in there.

On the flop I was praying for the board to pair, and it did on the turn, giving me the virtual nuts. Bingo. I was all ready to bet the river, but it came an Ace. I'll explain my thinking, and then what I think was wrong with it and why I'm such a donk.

My thinking is 'oh ****, I no longer have the nuts' and 'I hate that ace' and 'what if he shoves on my bet?'

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhh poker is so annoying sometimes.

I should have realised that the ace wasn't a bad card, if he has exactly what he has. I can get value from 10s full and broadway.

I need to mature a bit in poker. I started off as a nit - too tight and passive. My default thinking is 'what hands beat me?' and 'do I have the nuts?'. My game has gotten better and I make a lot more successful bluffs. But I probably don't value bet on the river enough. That said, I did have a nice spot in the same session where I did value bet the river and get paid.. Here:

I felt like I was ahead on the river, and bet accordingly; quite small. And then the villain made a pot-sized check raise. In the end I thought the size of my bet looked weak and it could have induced a bluff. So I called and villain had done exactly that with his hand; turned it into a bluff.

I guess my problem is laziness. A lot of people that know me will say that I'm lazy.
When you have the nuts in poker, it's so easy - it's easy to know what to do; bet.
When you don't have the nuts, it's harder, because you have to construct ranges for your opponent, and that takes time and careful thought.

I must learn, I must. I must get better. I need to be able to draw an income from poker, sooner rather than later, because I need to be able to provide for myself.

Got stung on the river by a flush when I had a set of queens for full pot. I'm disappointed. It was a good session and a villain had made a massive chip dump which cheered me up no end. But kind of a sour taste with that hand. It was a runner-runner flush which made it kind of gross. It hits hard when you get taken to value town like that; you feel like a chump. I was way ahead in the hand all the way till the river.

Sorry for venting on here, but I have nowhere else to vent. I have quite a lonely existence to be honest.

I feel like my confidence is damaged. I'm gonna give it a break today. I hit the 5 hour mark. I'm going to make mistakes. I wish I wouldn't. Perfection is a ****ING illusion.

I feel angry. I believe in God, but feel like I've got beef with Him. I know it's not His fault I suck, but I feel like my circumstances could be a lot better than they are. I have a long list of things I want to thank Him for, and I do thank Him. But at times like these I'm left wanting.

I just have to believe that God will provide for me. But I need to work hard for it, and I will. I just need to get my head down. Play every day, and get better. I have a mountain to climb. I'm not a genius, but I'm quite a smart guy. I should be smart enough to be a success somehow. I can't do a 9-5. I want to succeed at poker. I just hope I can build it up enough to the point where I can stand on my own two feet soon. I can't at the moment but I'm hoping that will change.

I WILL make it change. Where there's a will, there's a way. I've seen my mate be a big success at online poker.

I know God hears prayers, as he's answered many of mine. I wish I could hear Him a little louder sometimes though. He knows what I am capable and whether this is the right move for me. All this agonising probably ain't good for me. To much talking, not enough action. But I need to let off a little gas sometimes.

There's a balance there somewhere, between the self will and reliance on God. I used to be very cock-sure until life kicked that out of me. I learned humility. I guess everything we have is God-given, including our talents, and all our ups and downs. I'm not where I want to be, but I can change it if I set my mind to it. Jesus said he came so we could have life, and life to the full. I do believe that in my heart, but I've got a point to prove to the world, and I won't be happy until I do.

Step 1 is play enough. So I'm going to aim for 5k hands each week, or about 700 a day. I think that's about the right amount and it's a nice round figure.

I'm gonna keep posting on here and venting when I need to. I don't really care if anyone reads it, it's still useful to me to assess how I'm doing. I have a thread at T-nation for my working out that I'm fairly sure only I read, but it's still useful.

To God be the glory, man, to God be the glory.

Hey dude, Just wanted to wish you luck on your journey! Positivity plays a big role in everything man. If you think positively, then positivity will come in one way or another.

When you say you have a point to prove to the world, the only person it should matter to is yourself my guy. The world is a harsh place, 100% no ****, no one else will care about your journey or accomplishments as much as you should, that's what makes them yours man. A lot of people have similar goals in life, the ones that succeed put in the work when others won't.

I'm not downplaying anything that you've said at all, I'm just writing this for you in hopes that it gives you a little push of self-confidence and a boost! Your life is yours to live bro!
