Re: shooting for the high stakes (HU hypers - from $15s to $1000s)

thread revival time, kinda

Had considered starting to put content here again but keep deciding against it. University work meant I haven't been able to put in much volume recently, now that Uni is done I will try to finish getting in 100s within 2 weeks, but given I don't really want to put who I'm playing and specific results v them its kinda difficult to put anything interesting. I don't like leaving it to have just tailed off though so I'll write a quick update now and a final one when I make 100s.

Graph of 100s v me(need to reach 4k total and their ev to be <-2.96):

Obviously pretty pleased with these results so far but I don't expect to finish with as nice ev as currently. Currently I've mostly got my results 2 tabling and not extending sessions when I finish playing someone. Gonna be grinding pretty hard next 2 weeks though and make sure I've done my 4k games by then. As a consequence I'll play till someone ends session, then move onto someone else straight away at points as well as starting to 3 table. These factors are gonna hurt my ev but my main concentration is getting in quickly. If I dip below 0% ev I'll abandon that approach and go back to the nitty one.

Re: shooting for the high stakes (HU hypers - from $15s to $1000s)

Think I'm going to start keeping this thread updates again. Feel like the feeling of some level of accountability (however inconsequential actually achieving aims is) will help me maintain focus and if nothing else, at least make me have to think critically about my general approach to poker.

A summary of where I am now:

As narrated in my last post, I've finished uni for summer, have a 3 month break (only have to write dissertation in that time), I'm halfway to 100s, play the majority of my remaining games at 60s and some 30s if I'm bored and want to add something into my grind.

One problem I feel I have now is a lack of professionalism, particularly with my approach to recreational play. When I am just grinding 30s and 60s I tend to watch a film whilst I play, which results in a huge drop in focus. I've also struggled, especially at 30s, to take things seriously. For example yesterday I finished a 5 hour session against a reg, my concentration was slipping slightly near the end but I still felt like I had a clear picture of the game. Later I played some 30s, I find I'm just calling off really light, not folding to flop or turn c/r in clear spots, calling off too wide pre, 4-bet jamming too wide, floating and c/ring unnecessarily, basically a poker101 in what not to do v recreationals. I very much find myself struggling to transition from reg play to recreational play. I've even considered getting a coach to help me with this leak. Although for now I will hold off on that, I like the idea of being able to grind up just by myself, without the need for backing or coaching, just figuring things out for myself, winning money, and moving up. For now at least, I will stay true to my ideals.

Where I want to get to:

With the previous paragraph in mind, my aim is to arrive at a point where I am again beating fish for a good ev, I am putting in consistently good volume and I find myself just approaching things more professionally. Establishing myself to be in a position where people will start regarding me as one of the hardest working 100s regs by the end of the month is where I want to be. Perhaps there will be equally hard working grinders who make more money, there are likely some that are just better than me. As long as they aren't winning more than me because they are working harder than me, I can accept that.

Goals for this month:

I'm really looking to step up volume now, and my aim this month will be 5k+ games, and finish getting into the 100s, and going to next month. I will post daily updates with semi regularity, along with a 100s graph of them v me at all of 2.4k, 3k games and (what should be finally) at 4k games.

Their graph v me at 2.4k games:

Also, for a bit of diversity, will state some more irl goals. Over the last Uni year I did very little exercise (other than bike to Uni) and did not eat well. Whilst I'm still at above average fitness and within the normal weight range, I have more fat and less muscle than I would like. For someone who used to run competitively, from 800m to 18 mile, until I picked up an injury at 17, and then just started to go to the gym every day for the next 2 years, it is quite a way off what I've been accustomed to. To remedy this I did a 5k at the start of the holidays. For the first 4 weeks of the holidays I am aiming to cut 8 pounds whilst running/swimming 3/4 times a week and hoping the old injury doesn't flair up. 4 weeks after the first 5k, I will do another one, in the hope of taking my time from 23 minutes, to 21 minutes. From that point I will start mixing in gym work as well, until I feel I have a reasonable level of both aerobic fitness and strength.

Sounds like the reg to rec play is just a mental thing. I'm sure you know the correct adjustments to make, you just need to pay full attention and do it. Idk how much a coach can help with that unless it's a mental game coach like Jared Tendler or something. Glgl

Yea possibly, although I guess even just having a coach that confirmed my play is fine in most spots could help with the mental side of it even.

graph since last update:

around 200 of the games at 100s, still going strong there, 1400 left and then I should be in, world cup finally finishes tomorrow as well so I can start putting in volume from Monday onwards once that time sink has gone

Re: shooting for the high stakes (HU hypers - from $15s to $1000s)

3k games update:

well, almost 2999 games. 2.36% ev in that sample though which I'm very pleased with. Hopefully can have the next 1k games done in 5 days max, starts to feel very close now so that should push me to keep putting in good volume.

graph from 100s perspective (can't put it from my perspective cos I've got some games v fish in my 100s sample so it isn't true graph v 100s division):

Edit:

Actually have total 100 graph, don't have that many fish so isn't too skewed. Kinda depressing that without fish is 2.36% ev and with fish is 2.17% haha.

Been following for a long time. Well done on the progress! You'll be attacking the 200s division soon enough

ty. haha, ideally I would move more or less straight onto them. One time that being a student sucks though. When I am back at Uni I will have zero chance of getting in because I just can't put in the hours at the table and even if I did put in a lot of hours, I would have no time to go over games if I was low on confidence. So I guess I just gotta see what situation is like when I'm done with Uni if I want to go any higher. I'll probably play some 200s still, but just for fun more than anything.

Impressive results, the group never seems to gain any ev back from you. Roughly how many regs have you played in that sample?

Super sick results!! Its so impressive how far you have come since the start of this thread.

Is your aim to become a 100's reg and get a lobby or to surpass the 100's and challenge the 200's regs?

tyty. My aim is always forward, so yes eventually I will aim to challenge 200 regs. As I mentioned earlier for the next year or so getting a place there just isn't feasible. It will have to wait till after Uni.

Re: shooting for the high stakes (HU hypers - from $15s to $1000s)

Discovered stupidly addictive game on iPhone and that killed a bunch of my grind time today Still over last few days got decentish volume in though. Pretty big downswing in that sample though. One thing I'm glad about with trying 100s is being well rolled. Even with very nice ev if you aren't rolled br can get raped so quickly. It's just infinitely better to be in a position where all your concern needs to be is ev line and not if you are actually winning money or not.

Last 2 (and a few hours) days:

Re: shooting for the high stakes (HU hypers - from $15s to $1000s)

Been a lot slower putting in volume than I would like atm, lack of commitment on my part coupled with struggled to get a long session in v anyone recently. I find I can play someone for 5 hours straight fine but I struggle when every hour or so I swap opponents, feel like it causes focus to drift massively so even though I have hours available, I struggle to apply them into poker when it has to consist of constantly swapping opponents every hour and having to try and quickly adjust and remember all things for a new person.

Still 3390 games and at 2.22% ev, so hopefully find some longer sessions to play and can have it done in 3 days.

Last 5 (well 5 + a few hours of day 6) graph. ev drop off wasn't particularly nice, actual money drop off just compounded that. Hope I don't have to put up with this for much longer cos when I think about that 6-7k money in real terms it makes me quite sad haha. I would even settle just for some variance that takes my graph up occasionally, so i don't look at pt4 and just see a variance free downwards trajectory

very impressive to crush many different regs with 2% ev!! were you coached by someone or did u just figured it all by yourself?
can't imagine playing 50 different regs for 2 ev really, well done

Re: shooting for the high stakes (HU hypers - from $15s to $1000s)

Finally made 100s Now to send request to pokerstars to allow me to register for 200s :P

Overall took 4k games with 2.22% ev. Now time to try and grind hard again and make some money, 2700 games for month so getting 5k game sis out of reach, will go for a minimum of 4k though.

My chip graph (includes some fish games):

Their chip graph (includes only games v 100s members):

My winning (again 150ish games v fish:

Their winnings (crazy how hard rake takes it toll):
