I had barely been playing but I finally finished finals a few days ago. I spent one of my days off wandering around the city shooting pics, and I spent yesterday snowboarding. I'm planning on shooting and boarding a bunch over my break while also trying to make up for the volume I missed while preparing for finals.
I find that I go through swings with regards to how much I feel like studying poker. Lately, I haven't been in much of a mood for it. Sometimes it's all I do. Personally, I find that I'm able to study a decent amount overall without having to force myself to do it. I think continuing this pattern is a good idea and will prevent me from burnout or boredom. With that being said, I kinda hope I get back into the studying mood soon.
I also hope this guy NEVER gets in the studying mood:
Preflop: Hero is SB with K A
UTG folds, MP raises to $5, CO calls $5, BTN folds, Hero raises to $27.50, BB folds, MP raises to $66, CO folds, Hero raises to $200 and is all-in, MP calls $134

I just hit 300k hands on my current db (which extends back to around the beginning of this June) and this seems like a good time to post a graph update.
I chose to just put it in terms of big blinds because the mix of 100-500z makes the swings look arbitrarily big/small. I haven't played 100z since like June I think. The vast majority of this graph is at 200z with probably around 25k hands of 500z.
You'll notice a near 50BI downswing in there which was pretty sick. I had never been on such a large downswing, which in itself is quite lucky given that variance calculators indicate that this isn't that uncommon. I was talking to a player better than me during that downswing and he told me that he had actually been on three ~50BI downswings. It was just especially brutal because the first 20 or so BI of this downswing was at 500z.
It's crazy how as a poker player you think you have a strong understanding of variance, but even most of us likely don't fully grasp it as well as we should (me included). Riding the emotional swings, both up or down, is something I'm certainly guilty of. I haven't found a way to shut it down completely. One thing that I'm proud of though is that I can quite confidently say that losing a bunch doesn't affect my play (by no means do I mean to imply that I don't make mistakes). However, my mental game can still be improved.
The biggest reason that I get frustrated during losing stretches is ego. I've always been hyper-competitive in everything, and I think this has been, for the most part, advantageous with poker. It's easy to find motivation to study and get better. I'm excited whenever I find a spot that I realize I don't understand well. I've also enjoyed playing in the 500z pool with world-class players like OTB, MMA, and probably a few others that I'm forgetting. This also rings true for guys that may not play the highest stakes, but are undoubtedly crushing 500z. However, this same competitiveness and ego-driven motivation is a detriment when it subconsciously creates entitlement. It's easy to feel (whether consciously or subconsciously) as if you're "above" playing 200z. This is an absolutely futile thought and one that I'm embarrassed to admit that I've had plenty of times at some level. Nobody is above playing any stake, and nobody is too good to forego variance and play the stakes that they feel they should. I'm also in no position to evaluate my own game without incredible bias. While my winrate is good and I've had success at 200z, this doesn't mean I deserve to just move up. Even if we assume that I'm one of the top regs at 200z (which I'm sure some would contest), there are still a plethora of regs that are vastly stronger than me at 500z.
The other night I had a chat with another really strong player (different from the one mentioned before). He's probably the best player I know and the conversation was incredibly motivating. He's had a tough stretch recently, one that trumps mine by a long shot just given stakes, even though he is undoubtedly +EV in the games he plays. If someone that strong can have such a brutal swing and find the motivation to keep grinding and improving, then I've got nothing to feel entitled about.
I'm not worried the least bit by how many superior regs there are at 500z, I'm excited by the challenge. I'm confident in my game and the improvements I've made recently. I'm even more confident in my ability to work hard and improve. I can get so much better, and I will.
Great post, your future seems pretty bright in poker with a mindset like this. .. GL!
That's my secret, I'm always on a downswing. Wait...

Thanks! That's very kind.
So I was supposed to go snowboarding today but bailed because I'm coming down with a bit of a cold. Glad I didn't go!
All but 565 hands are at 500z. The pool was pretty great and a crusher-friend encouraged me to hop in. Winning a little over 5k in a day is probably not too extraordinary for a 500z reg, but for a 200-500 tweener like me, it feels pretty awesome. I ran hotter than the sun and definitely made some mistakes (including a couple of super nitty river checks; I should have marked them to post and shame myself). It's important to stay even-keeled with a day like this, because these results are not a direct indication of the quality of my play. On the bright side, I found plenty of spots to mark and review. The study bug has hit me a little more recently.
There's a LOT more to learn. I just hope I can catch more sun in the mean time.
Haha thanks. I think my overall approach to poker is pretty decent. My mental game, however, has tons of room for improvement. One can easily appear to be more "zen" than they are when given the opportunity to think and type, so this disclaimer seemed appropriate :P

Glad you liked them! It's strange watching them back now (even the new ones) because I think I've improved so much since I recorded my final video.
Just curious, why did you bet river there so big against the fish in the K9o hand? Is it because he has gutshots and draws or were you trying to get him to fold a pair?

I thought that he would call turn a lot with 2nd pair or worse type hands (since they often have gutters) and I thought I could get them to fold often by betting big OTR (IMO fish will respond pretty elastically to sizing here). I knew villain was a fish, but I didn't have many hands. Suffice to say, I wouldn't have attempted this bluff had I known he would call-down so lightly lol.
I played a couple of fun hands today and realized that, combined with the hands marked since my previous HH post, I had enough post-worthy ones to create an update.
Preflop: Hero is UTG with A A
Hero raises to $4.10, 2 folds, BTN raises to $15, SB calls $14, BB calls $13, Hero raises to $54.60, BTN folds, SB calls $39.60, BB folds
Flop: ($139.20) 5 9 5 (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $31.38, SB raises to $438.60, Hero calls $125.09 and is all-in
Turn: ($452.14) Q (2 players, 1 is all-in) River: ($452.14) 5 (2 players, 1 is all-in)
Spoiler:
Results: $452.14 pot ($2.75 rake)
Final Board: 5 9 5 Q 5
SB showed 7 6 and won $224.69 ($13.62 net)
Hero showed A A and won $224.70 ($13.63 net)
OTR, I was thinking to myself "I only lose to AT, and I really hope he doesn't have ATo in his range. Still, I have to shove here because he has enough worse combos (because if he has ATo he has QJo too). When he called my shove and showed AT, I thought "of course" -_-. I was legitimately startled when the chips went my way and it took my at least 1.5s to realize I had the best hand. Christ.
I figure that this seems as good a time as any for an update.
The 500z games have been good to me recently with the soft pools. I occasionally have to "take it all in". Playing 500z feels awesome. It's still novel to me, and playing this limit has been a goal of mine for forever now. This probably sounds silly to regulars or to higher stakes players. The magic of poker has faded notably from the days that I was playing micros, but I can still distinctly remember looking at even the 200nl games and thinking how cool it would be to play them. I would occasionally watch and feel like all the regs were so good. Well, they were (relative to me).
This isn't to say "I've made it" at 500. I'm far from it. My overall volume at 500z is still entirely negligible. But while we so often ride the rage or joy-inducing waves of poker with tunnel vision, it can be appropriate to momentarily appreciate the results of one's efforts thus far. I started this year playing mostly 100z with some 200z. I think my inactivity in 2016 set me back quite a bit relative to the field. The most optimistic evaluation might have rated me as a-shade-above-average as of May 2017. Hopefully in another 6 months I can laugh at how bad I am now.
I'm encouraged by the fact that my samples are getting to the point where I'm finding leaks in many of the regulars that only play 500z. Not everyone is infallible as they may seem from afar. I do my best to not dismiss a seemingly foreign line as "bad". However, when you see something that you are confident is a mistake (while also considering whether a deviation is being made for exploitative purposes), it's rewarding in a way.
Goals for 2018:
- 600k hands
- become a regular at 500z
- become a better photographer
- write more (any type of writing)
I know some people like to set goals like "study x hours/day". Like I've mentioned before, I just cannot do that. I let my mood dictate my study habits. Fortunately, this still results in a lot of studying, and it also impedes burn-out. I'm also reluctant to set win-rate goals just given how massive of a sample you need to confidently determine a wr. With that being said, I'll just say that I'd like to become a lot stronger of a player.
I'll save any post-worthy hands for next time. Until then, good luck everyone.
yeah boy, incredible results.
Good luck this year, sky (AI) is the limit.
That's why I'm trying to become one with AI.

And with you. Though it would be nicer if you stopped checking when I have the nuts.
I've been studying a bunch lately and I've definitely found a few lines/spots that I'm gonna start playing differently. Poker is so much more fun for me whenever I'm able to implement one or two newly discovered things.
A few hands from my recent play:
I already miss the last two weeks of December greatly:
Preflop: Hero is MP with A K
Hero raises to $10.25, CO raises to $20, BTN folds, SB calls $17.50, BB folds, Hero raises to $671.34 and is all-in, CO calls $480 and is all-in, SB folds
Flop: ($1,025) 5 4 2 (2 players, 2 are all-in) Turn: ($1,025) 5 (2 players, 2 are all-in) River: ($1,025) 9 (2 players, 2 are all-in)
Spoiler:
Results: $1,025 pot ($3.00 rake)
Final Board: 5 4 2 5 9
Hero showed A K and won $1,022.00 ($522.00 net)
CO showed 7 T and lost (-$500 net)
I've spent a bunch of time during the past year playing around with photography. I'm still very much an amateur, but these are probably some of my better shots from 2017. Although these are all scenic, I actually much prefer street photography. People are far more interesting imo. Hopefully I can spend more time with this in 2018 and get better!

pretty cool shots for an amateur, ive been doing some street photography stuff in the last few years as well
which camera do you use?
and also where are you uploading your photos?
would love to follow
