Abc poker must be optimal
09-18-2018 , 09:39 AM
Yo, failed my volume and updating goals yesterday because I spewed off a 260bb stack in a single hand and was so ashamed and embarrassed at myself that I couldn't recover mentally afterwards. It was by far the worst hand I've played since starting back, and that includes some of the monstrosities I produced in the early days of 10NL.

There's no point in me commenting much more on the hand than I already have. I knew even whilst I was playing it that literally every aspect about it was appalling. Even though there were some reasons for doing what I did, the sample size is so small that those reasons don't even come close to standing up to the scrutiny that should've been employed before taking such a phenomenal risk with a significant % of my bankroll. And regardless of whatever perceptions I had, they were largely negated by the LOLsamplesize, the positions and the fact the 3b was vs a shortie UTG.

The only silver-lining is that it upset me so much. I can't beat myself up any further than I already have so the only thing now is to take the expensive lesson on the chin and to keep on pushing forwards. You can't rewrite the mistakes of the past, you can only use that knowledge to create a better future, so I'll remember the pain this hand caused me and ensure I don't act so foolishly again.

I know cold-calling in general sucks, but in this particular instance vs a player who seems to be extremely laggy, is cold-calling not an option?

-----

Didn't play for as long as I needed to today as I ended up watching the Stoke game which I'd forgotten about (they won for once) but just had a solid 3hr session to make the day respectable. Ran pretty decent and finished with 200bb / 550bb on my tables so made a few bucks.

One thing I'm becoming increasingly aware of is how bad I am in BvB spots. I just have no idea how to play those positions, sb especially, but it does seem that most competent players have an edge over me so I guess I'll have to start studying that next week. I feel fairly incompetent in a whole bunch of situations but I suppose that's a natural feeling when you start to take any pursuit seriously. The more you learn the more you realise you have so much to learn.

H1 - The iso is slightly loose, I'd much rather have 87s or A2s here, but I think it's fine. As played never folding as we have the 3rd nuts and they shouldn't ever have the nuts.

H4 - Rec with aggro looking stats over a tiny sample. Vs what they had we 100% missed out on 120bb here, but I figured that if they have 4x then we're getting paid anyway, and we want to keep their bluffs in. However, given my turn play maybe it's unlikely that they will have many bluffs unless they're really mental. Will keep an eye out for this in future because what I imagined to be a rec going crazy was actually a rec looking to get to SD. A better player than me also says that we should jam turn because they could've picked up some draws and we can get value from those, which makes a lot of sense.

H5 - Reg with 15% 3b, 29% 3b vs LP steal, 21% sb 3b but fairly tight post-flop aggression stats. Actually found this a difficult call as it's possible they play AA and KK this way, they can have A3s and A2s and (less likely given river sizing) even 54s, and they might even be able to have quads on this board. At same time I think we have to call vs a player with such huge 3b stats, especially when our hand is faceup as a non-nutted OP to the board. I kind of feel they don't go so big with AA and KK on river as they surely fear us having those hands beat, and also don't want to be betting so big that they only ever v-own themselves.

Calling there would be terrible. Don't feel compelled to always play AK at micro just because its AK. Its not that good, sometimes its better to just fold and move on and find better +ev spots. Smart poker. 4betting AKo, oop, deep vs MP, is not smart its asking to be stacked. Leveling yourself into a bad play because someone is 'laggy' is also not smart. Your playing 25nl not mid stakes.

Cold 4betting is very profitable at micro zoom in my experience coz ppl love to fold. Ide defo go for it. Ide also definilty cbet large on flop then give up turn. He has so many sets in his range that hell probs fold all other pp on flop.

H1; Ide fold pre, as played ide do the same. Sucks losing a9 to k9.
H2; Villain is probably drunk/ high or both. ide 100% fire the turn tho, he calls all draws and very very rarely raises them. Rarely has trips coz donking top pair is rare and wont raise into us light coz nobody ever folds trips, right?
H3; GG, some people fold 55- pre UTG coz they say rake at micros is too high for them to be profitable, ive never looked into it to much but triple barreling 55's on boards you miss sucks. So i just fold them. Also set over set really really sucks.
H4; Honestly no idea. I never x/r flops co vs but but clearly worked perfectly here. I also dont think you missed out on much value, since surely he fold to a turn 3bet or river lead unless he is spazz or thinks your a spazz.
H5; WP, QQ is standard 4bet GII at 100bb, not sure if we should 4bet at 200bb tho.(probably still should, V probably just flats all his PP + most SUited Ax, probably never 5bets but if he does its almost always ak.)
H6; I think its WP, his 4bet sizing is huge, maybe a tell for when hes bluffing? I think i 100% check turn with AA and Jx as villain. So i would play QQ exactly same as you.
H7; Always nice to flop the nuts.

Im a fellow microstakes ****reg whos to self concious to start his own pgc. Good luck in yours.

Yep agree completely with what you say mirage. The limit is so soft and there's such an abundance of fish and poor regs that we don't need to chase such thin edges. Being a mediocre reg myself, I can produce the most optimal results with my current skillset by avoiding silliness like that AK hand. Thankyou for the advice this is something I'm going to remember.

There are spots for cold 4betting for sure but that definitely wasn't one of them; a most likely competent reg 3betting from MP vs an UTG shortie open is super-strong and, even though their (most likely skewed) stat sample told me this player was possibly going too wide in this spot, I simply don't have close to enough information to not give them the benefit of the doubt. As mirage says we can happily pass here and move on to a better spot. If I had done that my roll would be 2.5BI better off, + whatever equity I lost through missing the volume goals that day. (prob bout $3.50)

TY for the hand analysis btw.

-----

Yo, hit volume goal today and ran ungodly hot. Probably made close to 15BI in total, maybe a tad less as lost a few pots towards the end. It was just one of those days where you almost feel embarrassed at how hot you're running. They don't come along too often so I'll do my best to remember this the next time I'm in deathmode. Will post the graph from today when I check results on Sunday.

Spoiler:
1st time this has ever happened to me.

Spoiler:
Also had about 700bb on the other table.

I also had some really solid strat advice from the group-chat regarding mistakes I'm making with my cbet sizes. Looking forward to applying what I've been advised as I'm clearly butchering a lot of spots.

H13 - I made the 3b big because opener is deep. Used my whole time-bank but just couldn't imagine the rec was piling AQ or worse here, whereas it seemed much more likely they could be doing this with a slowplayed AA or KK. Looking at it now though I think I pussied out a bit, maybe it's more likely they were spazzing in annoyance at being 3b / squeezed off flops.

H5 - Go for it all.

H13 - From my experience this is usually JJ/AK rather than AA/KK but who knows with this guy.

h7: pretty sure this is fold pre, especially vs 3x. the more multiway the hand gets the more we want to play cards which can make nuts and A8o is not one of them. it just plays very badly, we are very often dominated etc.

Def missed a lot of value in H5. H13 I'm still thinking I should call and make a note. Doubt a rec would play AA this way but then again I've seen some stuff way more bizarre.

I'm completely clueless about how wide I should be flatting in the bb in multiway pots. Obviously stuff like Axs, mid-low PPs and SCs/suited gappers are no-brainers. I think in a lot of situations unconnected suited hands like J6s and Q4s are OK too. If this was an EP opener and a reg flatting I'd fold A8o. As you say though it may still be a fold without there being an absolute fun-player flatting as it's a hand that can quite easily get us into trouble even when we hit the board hard, and more often than not we're going to have a single pair OOP and will forced to call a few streets vs a LP bettor on the basis that they could be taking a stab at the pot IP.
09-20-2018 , 10:51 AM
H3- bigger OTT, I suspect you bet bigger with TPTK/overpairs, right? That sizing looks like it makes more sense for your hand, but it doesn't, you could even overbet for value there if you wanted. Bet the same sizing with TJ as you would bet with AJ in there, you get more value and make it harder for villain to exploit you. A lot of people make that sizing mistake OTT and give away the strength of heir had. Obviously close to 0 regs will exploit that, but it's good practice. EV is close, so you should choose the opion with greater deception/less exploitability.

H5- bigger ott, jam river

h7-when I sweated you I told you to fold A3o in that spot vs a smaller sizing, given A3o>A8o mw, ypu hould have folded this pre. Weak Axo play poorly in mw pots, your sdv is low, you don't make good hands/draws, you will end up with TPWK a lot of the time vs 1 range that dominates you(RFI) and a range with good equity vs you(cc). It's a nightmare scenario, because when you flop TP you will be guessing if you're good, won't get calls by worse enough and when called villain will have 20%-30% vs you.
09-20-2018 , 10:57 AM
H11 KK is always a x there unless villain is a whale, even vs whales x could be better, wp otr with your explo sizing.

H13- call, fish has too many pps and could show up with garbage, people rarely slowplay AA/KK

Sup. Hit volume goals but the poker itself didn't go great. Started off running amazing again but it fizzled out and in the end I'm guessing I finished around b/e. Also played very mediocre and made some mistakes here and there and felt like a fish at times.

H10 - Unfortunate vs rando BTN. Their river bet was unbelievably quick which I think is usually a sign of strength. I tanked for ages and they wrote "lol" in chat. Maybe they wouldn't do that if they're bluffing. They also need to have FDs with no SDV to bluff here imo. A8ss or A9ss never turn into a bluff like this. Think we have to sigh and fold.

what a beastly stack there

think that last hand (H10) we want to either bet or check call. Realistly not losing to all that much when it comes four to a straight and while villain has some 6x, i'd say its not a huuuuuuuuge amount. For me it's a bet or a check call

dont think i'm folding H8 at any point but i feel your pain.

Hmmm looking at it today with fresh eyes I'm thinking it's a poor fold. We only need to be correct about 1/3 of the time and I think given the fact they didn't think about it we can discount 88, and other sets as I expect all those to raise turn and don't expect them to snap-jam river. They're polarised to either a 6 or JTss / bluffs and there has to be enough FDs and weak SDV hands turning into bluffs for this call to be profitable. Disappointed in myself for folding. Will have to try to be more mindful in those situations and just do the simple math in my head.

Also, given the fact they can have 88 that never folds and possibly just checks back river, and maybe 99 that turned top-set so gets blindsided into not raising turn, but also won't ever fold to a bet whilst it may not bet if checked to (they surely don't have weaker sets as they HAVE to raise turn) then I think c/c river is infinitely better than shoving ourselves.

Really tough grind today. I actually felt sharper than I have for a few days, which is weird as last night I took some relatives to the airport at 3 in the morning and didn't even get to bed til 5ish, then woke up without alarm at 10:30am for some reason. Despite feeling sharper the grind itself was just a ball-ache. I played squash earlier and tweaked my hamstring, then after getting back and showering and settling down to play the first hand I get dealt KK and I'm thinking "wow I hope this is an omen for what's to come" and yep it sure was, ran into AA and lost...

Even though I think I generally played decent there were a few really poor misplays in key spots which I'll post. It's very frustrating but I just have to remind myself I'm very much learning and these costly ****ups are my lessons.

H1 - Think folding here vs a nit-fish BTN and a tight reg is fine, especially with no BDNFD.

H2 - This is one of the hands I misplayed poorly vs a very tight seeming reg. I blinded myself into believing that their range for checking flop was never overpairs and that river bet is polarised (obv a bad read) but it's totally reasonable they can have straights here, and given what they had they can have everything else too. Even if it's polarised though we've still got to fold I think.

H4 - One of the worst hands I played today, and it annoyed me for quite a while after. The muppet making the click-4b is quite aggro and I was petrified that their range for doing this was AA only, but we burnt a hell of a lot of equity by not just 5b-ripping pre, especially is the sb somehow decides to come along.

Was actually hating life whilst betting river as knew JT was likely out there, but then a rec made the raise and I thought "oh it's a rec maybe they can have a weaker 2pr" but obviously that was a complete brain-fart as almost no rec is going to raise A7 or A4 here.

H10 - Late on vs a big-fish. I justified the open because the player was running at 50/9 or something daft, but I've just seen the sample was actually only 14 hands. If we know for sure this is a complete fun-player I still think we can justify a loose-open but I didn't even look at the sample, just saw the stats and got blindsided, so with that in mind this is a big, costly error against a player who might not even play AQ or AJ this way, and might fold when we jam.

I'm going to be putting extra hours in over the next few days as I'll be resting my injury, so hopefully it doesn't go like tonight otherwise that amazing +13BI or w/e day in the week will seem like it was all for nothing. Thinking about it I must've lost at least half of that back today, maybe more.

Yo. Only ended up playing for 1hr 7mins yesterday. I played so badly in that short session and maybe even tilted a little towards the end. I'm guessing I've probably dropped most of whatever I made on that sick heater day earlier in the week. Will find out tonight.

To be honest once I finish grinding tonight I may reassess whether to drop down to 16NLz or not as, although I do believe I'm at the very least a marginal winning player @ 25NLz, the opportunity to cement my roll at the limit following that sick day looks to have now disappeared. The swings this week have also freaked me out a little, which I suppose is a sign that I might be playing a little too high.

I'm also considering my strategy and thinking that I'm possibly opening too wide a range and would be better off trimming the more marginal opens from my game to lower variance and, quite possibly at these levels, maximise winrate. The 16NLz graph that Nux produced is way more beautiful than anything I've been able to come up with, and he's been telling me that I'm opening too wide in a lot of spots. Obviously he's a much stronger player than me post-flop too, but that's even more reason for me to trim down my ranges and simplify the game so that I'm not being overwhelmed with a load of spots where I'm going to flops and turns with an inferior range and, in many instances, inferior post-flop abilities to the regs I'm up against.

I'm also starting to think it might be a good idea for me to join a stable. Not going to rush into any application process just yet but I'll definitely have a good think about this over the next few days and weigh up the pros and cons. Obviously giving away 50% of profits is never fun, but at the same time I'm not relying on poker for money at this point in time so the opportunity to have an experienced team guiding me along the shortest route towards my initial long-term goal (becoming a winning player at 100NLz) + the removal of any financial stress is definitely appealing to me.

Not saved any hands from yesterday sorry. It really was a cluster**** of a session. I also think that my general malaise with life-goals is affecting my consistency and mentality when I sit down to grind so I'm going to make a big push in the coming week to get all that **** back on track. Poker isn't a sport but it really is important to treat it as such and to prepare your body like an athlete would, with good nutrition and regular exercise, as the brain is a part of the body and healthy body healthy mind yada yada yada.

Update later. Shelly.
Nice read mate, think in zoom swings should be sick, keep this in mind before getting in the pool seems important xD, correct yourself is fine, change your plans drastically for a down not i think, i mean yes for your attitude, but not simply bc bad sessions. We need to be aware that fat downs are going to come 100%, we need to have the mind prepared so that when the down comes we do not collapse, need understand the game.

I started playing again last week, after a long time without playing, trying to do things the best way possible this time, especially in mental way, you can see in my thread that I started very badly, in those sessions I did not tit, but then I did not want to play and I also realized that I was too worried about the graphics, not that I'm obsessed with the profits or something, but I do see her a lot in small samples (and while I play) as if she were to say something xD, then I learned (in valentjnn vids, this guy is a volume degen, i learn a lot of he for free in mental game, people here hate he and insult he in his thread lol, but mods banned me for saying pure reallity instead of them hahaha, someone putting lulz here in 3,2,1 but it's the reality, that grinder kicks you in the mouth, does not even respond to your insults in his own thread lol ) that it is a matter of understanding the game well and being consequent with your actions, I also learned from him that when you do that talking about variance and the swings and the graph, you start to really enjoy the game and this is sick.

This has to do with what you say about the stablo, you now want to escape from the pressure of the swings, you want to eliminate that pressure by joining a stable just to get to 100z quickly and you are willing to give your 50% profit (now that you think that you have no earnings, you would have to see if you thought that after a + 10bi session lol), what I mean is that that is not your reason to get into a stables, is a stupid reason. We must be aware of the game we play, neither more nor less
