Sup guys. I finished my last session of the month yesterday so here's the update.

-----

November 2018 Review

When I set November's goals four weeks ago the aim was not only to inject a larger proportion of studying into my routine, but more than anything to prove to myself that I could hit targets over a longer goal period. I'm pleased to announce that I've managed to hit every one of those targets.

In many ways it's been a tough month. For the first half I ran as bad as I have @ 25NLz. Coupled with the major disruptions that a house-move entails, I'm definitely proud that I've been able to stay determined, disciplined and focused on the bigger picture.

Before I started with all the Flopzilla work, I wrote that I wanted to reach the end of 2018 having put a lot of hours into that particular grind. Even if I was to neglect Flopzilla for the rest of the year (I won't) I think I can say I've achieved that. I strongly believe that I've begun the process of developing a clear edge on the majority of players at the level. Even though my understanding of range-creation and board-interaction is still at a relatively infantile stage, the work that I've done has allowed me to identify that a sizeable proportion of 25NLz regs clearly don't have even a basic understanding of this stuff. I've actually really enjoyed the analyses I've been doing, but feeling like this work is going to elevate me to one of the stronger players at the level would be all the motivation I'd need even if the work itself was mind-numbing. It's definitely something I'm excited to continue with because, in reality, I've only scratched the surface and it's already made a huge difference to my confidence.

As mentioned, I ran fairly aids for the first half of the month so was expecting to be at least 20BI down at my worst. Caught some heat in the last 10 days and was hoping to be at least b/e.

Graph for November 2018

Not checking results does play tricks. The downswing was nowhere near as severe as it felt and, even though $330 from around 100hrs of work isn't much, I'm stoke cityd to have made money this month considering I was telling myself halfway through that breaking-even would be a solid result. I think it's also a solid demonstration of cognitive-bias tricking us into remembering the bad more than the good, hence why a lot of fish think it's rigged. (as did I when I first started playing online )

I also firmly believe that, if I was to start this month again, with exact same distribution and opponents but with my current experience and knowledge, I would've made more money. That's the key isn't it.

Analysed 62 spots in total.

[X] written analysis of 30+ hands calculating pot-odds

[X] 30k+ total hands @ 25NLz (2-tabling a conservative estimate of 350 hands/hr this is about 85hrs)

Smashed this, although my h/hr 2-tabling is more around 450.

I'm taking the whole weekend off from poker (Fri-Sun) and I think it's a well-earned break. I've also been noticing that my stamina has been poor later on in sessions. Maybe this is a result of burnout, but maybe it's also a result of improving my game but being unable to retain the newly learnt abilities over longer periods?

Anyway, I've got a bunch of areas where I'd like to invest time in December, such as picking up the HUD work again and watching some videos I've got saved. I'll also be looking to start mixing in sessions of 3-tabling. Over the weekend I'll create a clear list.

Unfortunately, December is going to be a crazily disrupted month as I'll need to leave this house, move in with my rents, and then (hopefully before Christmas) move into a new flat. As a result I won't be setting many long-term goals until 2019, but this month has given me a lot of hope for the future and I can't wait to be settled and grinding in my new flat. I also want to make sure I put in a good chunk of volume over the holidays as I expect, particularly in the week between Christmas and New Year, that the games will be absolutely popping.

Thanks for reading and, once again, thankyou to all the people who have given me support.

Got some news yesterday regarding this house-move. After spending the last few weeks getting stuff packed and getting rid of unwanted items in anticipation of an imminent moving date, we've heard back from the buyers' solicitors and they aren't looking to move in until mid-January now (if ever...) so on the plus side that gives me the whole of December and the holidays to grind in the comfort of this house with minimal disruptions.

I've taken the last 5 days off, which is 2 more than originally planned...so in danger of slipping into a rut it's time to get my **** together and start holding my own feet to the fire again.

Over the weekend I created a rough list of the things I'd like to get through in December.

HUD re-design

watch some poker videos and take notes

start reading The Mental Game of Poker again

start mixing in sessions of 3-tabling 25NLz

continue with the flopzilla work

continue with the pot-odds work

30k+ hands 25NLz

remodel colour codes in stars

create a video of the HUD issue and send to pokerstars in attempt to get them to recognise and fix the ongoing problem

I'll be going back to shorter goal-periods for December, but once all the dust from the chaos of the holidays / house-move has settled early in 2019 I'll for sure get back to longer goal-periods again.

-----

Goals for Wednesday 5/12/18 to Friday 7/12/18

[ ] complete the daily workout on Lumosity before first grinding session of each day

[ ] written analysis of 8+ hands using Flopzilla

[ ] complete all saved study work before first grinding session of a day

[ ] 8+hrs total 2-tabling 25NLz

[ ] 1.5+hrs total 3-tabling 25NLz

[ ] no intentionally checking results or balance until after the final session of the goal-period is complete

[ ] review goals ITT before end of goal-period

[ ] new goals ITT before end of goal-period

-----

In hindsight it's a big mistake for me not to set new goals immediately after completing current ones. As odd as it might sound to some, I literally can't function without having everything planned out fairly rigidly. Even stuff like basic chores need to be written down and planned in advance, almost militarily, for me to get through them. I'll make sure I always keep this closer to the front of my mind to prevent losing days and slipping into ruts.

I won't be putting daily-goals ITT because it's too time consuming (will just do those for myself on my desktop) but I'm going to start posting hands ITT at the end of each day again as I think that generates the most interest. Also, by Friday I should have over 100k hands total @ 25NLz so I look forward to completing this set of goals and posting that ITT.

Update later. Cheers.

Great stuff mate.

I'm joining the "don't look at results" bandwagon as well. Only a few days in and it feels good

GL this month.

Cheers Danny. Def think it's something worth doing. If nothing else it's an exercise in discipline. Wish I'd been doing it when I was a 180 grinder, I was so tied in to my session to session results back then it was untrue.

-----

First day back at the tables. Only 2-tabled because, even though I didn't feel too rusty in general, I def botched a few hands early on so in reality probably was. My diet and sleeping-pattern has been poor for a decent period now and that has to affect the quality of what I'm bringing to poker. Will look to get that all back on track sooner rather than later.

Have to say too, I feel like the quality of the games deteriorate past midnight on weeknights. It's ok when you're running blueline hot (maybe that means it's more +EV overall?) but I do feel like the fish leave and it's just a load of tired/tilted regs taking literally every PF spot. In terms of off-peak grinding it's much easier to play pre-5PM than post-midnight IMO.

H1 - Talked this one over in discord. Vs two randos. Not c/r flop is a mistake for a bunch of reasons. Not betting much bigger on river is also a mistake. As played not folding obv.

H4 - Fairly tight-passive reg. 19/12 guy with 0 history of 3b in these positions, which is why I opted to flat although I'm hearing that flatting might be a mistake. Tilted at myself for not finding the turn c/jam against what I recognised was more likely to be draws than value. Think the chances of this being a hand that had me crushed on turn vs something like AJhh/AThh or JTs is slim, but we don't expect them to bluff rivers so turn c/jam is clearly the play. Also hearing that c/r flop vs this size and noting when they fold/what they continue with is a thing too.

As I see it you're such a lock value wise with 88 whereas 4x benefits from some equity denial when raising

Def see where you're coming from guys, as evidenced by how I played the hand. The explanation I received though also made a lot of sense. Think it's less black and white than it seems.

I'm not going to lie my head has been up my arse for a few days now and I've not done very well with the goals I last set. It's happened a few times already ITT but for anyone unaware, I'm prone to slipping into periods of depression and poor productivity. In fact I've had quite a few staking deals in the past that have come to an end because I've slipped into such a dark hole that the backers have cut their losses. I'm much better at catching myself falling into oblivion than I was in the past, so these periods are both shorter and less frequent, but sadly they do still happen.

On the positive side I've essentially lost less than a week of productivity to this blip and have had a much better day today, including setting some life-goals for the next 9 days. At the end of this post I'll set some poker-goals over the same timeframe. I know it doesn't sound like much, but just the activity of writing down goals to work towards goes a long way to clearing my head. I strongly suspect that my failure to do so during last weekend greatly contributed to my malaise over the past 4 or 5 days. Maybe hitting my monthly goals and then having no solid plans in place induced an anti-climatic state in me? If you stand still you go backwards sort of thing. I'm not sure about the deeper psychology but moving forwards I'm going to ensure that, whenever possible, I have new long-term goals in place before old ones have expired. I think that could go a long way to reducing these blue-spells.

On a more positive note I did achieve something today. Mixed a short session of 3-tabling into my grind. Had to remind myself to breath a few times... but generally felt comfortable. I think a gradual introduction and then increase of 3-tabling volume is going to be a big objective over the next month or two.

Now that you mention it I do recognise the name. It's not a SN that rolls off the tongue so it's easy to forget. Maybe that's more +EV!

Played a little tonight. To be honest Saturdays aren't great for me, I play squash in the morning, watch Stoke in the afternoons and then visit family in the evening. But wanted to get a bit of volume in to make sure I'm not starting off these latest goals by playing catchup.

Don't feel like I played particularly well. I started by playing the 3-tabling session and in hindsight I think that was an error. Probably best to warmup with a standard 2-tabling session before playing those 3-tabling clicks.

Generally the games were popping though. I've got it in my head that, of the weekend days, Saturday is the worst. Whilst that might be true I saw a lot tonight, even from regs, to convince me that it's still an awesome night to grind.

H2 - Pretty sweet vs a rec. Without the BDFD I think I just check flop. Not sure about the turn 150%, maybe this isn't going to be too effective vs fish who will mostly peel one off with QTo or JTo. Wouldn't be surprised to see better flushes some of the time (potentially only AJhh though) but, as we block KThh I think this is a mandatory jam vs a rec.

No mate I didn't go. Two of my mates went and offered to get me a ticket but I turned it down, not because I thought there was going to be trouble but in protest at the youth teams in the competition. Stoke won that trophy twice during my lifetime (I was at Wembley v Bristol City in 2000, 75k crowd) and, for a club that is essentially a giant when they're in the 3rd tier, that trophy offered our supporters a great deal of hope during bleaker times. To see it desecrated by my own club no less is shocking and worrying to me. If B teams ever manage to bribe their way into the football league it will be a very dark day for football in this country.

Got to say, even though I'm fully aware of the animosity between stoke and vale (potteries derby happened most seasons when I was a kid) I was still shocked by what went on. I was imagining it would mainly be normal supporters there, kids who have never experienced stoke v vale (last real derby was 2002) but from what I've heard and seen, there were a lot of lads out to cause trouble. Saw a tweet from a bloke I went to high-school with saying that people were openly taking drugs in the stand whilst smashing it to pieces. Also saw a video doing the rounds of some ****** jumping up and down on the roof of a woman's car whilst she films (and screams) from her upstairs window, practically writing off the car.

I'm all for rivalry and banter in football but what went on was ridiculous and crossed way over the line. I don't care if it's port vale fc or a place miles away from where you live, I will never understand the mentality of people who go out and smash up their own city. The sad thing is, when the banning orders have been dispatched, and the dregs have returned to the shadows, it'll be ordinary, law-abiding stoke supporters who will feel the heat of this, both in terms of zealous, heavy-handed policing at away matches and even from hooligans of other clubs seeing what happened and thinking stoke hooligans are still active and bullying the **** out of ordinary supporters who won't be able to protect themselves.

Sup guys.

Had a solid, productive day. Spent a good amount of time studying and talking over hands and whatnot, then played for >4hrs tonight including a little time spent 3-tabling. Don't feel like I played anywhere close to my A-game but I feel pretty happy with where my C-game is at these days. Still think I'm doing very well at the level even when I'm not on form.

I posted in a friend's PGC earlier about the concept of A-game, which is something I first became conscious of when reading the inchworm stuff in The Mental Game of Poker a few years back. I was having a think and I realised that it's actually quite rare for me to feel like I'm razor sharp when I grind. We're talking like, maybe an hour once in a blue-moon. Not even full-days! There's obviously stuff you can do to increase the chances of bringing your best to the grind (staying healthy and whatnot) but even then I think people generally overestimate how well they're playing most of the time. The better I get, the more I realise I almost never feel amazing about how I'm performing. It just emphasises the importance of working hard to improve so that you can still do some solid damage when you've only got your B or C (or even worse!) games to rely on.

Really busy day tomorrow both on and off the tables. Update in roughly 24hrs.

Shelly.
12-10-2018 , 09:13 PM
Had a solid day productivity wise. Also managed to finish quite a bit earlier than the last few days, which I need because I'm overtired and could do with a good rest.

Played for not far off 5hrs total, including about half an hour of 3-tabling. Feel like I played better than yesterday for the most part, but had a few sloppy moments (and a few ****ty runouts) that limited what could've been a very solid day results wise. Not going to lie, I'm super frustrated because, whilst I'm playing as well as I ever have, I think just a couple of poor decisions here and there are the difference between comfortably beating the level and totally annihilating. Just need to be a bit sharper in some river spots and let hands go when opponents can only have a small number of bluff combos. (and in all likelihood don't even have some of those!)

H6 - One of the river calls I'm unhappy with vs a somewhat LAG reg. We basically only beat KQ and whilst we unblock those combos, this player likely has all the Q9 too by river. Think I should've found the fold.

H7 - Saved this for flopzilla review. Vs a PF nit. I suspect it's a close but a decent bluff, but I'll have a play about with it. Also, having Ks blocker would've been quite a bit better as the Ts blocks a lot less combos of FD than the Ks, assuming they defend most KXs at some frequency.

H10 - Close to the end of the day vs a reg. Was super-tilted at my decision not to cbet, especially with BDFD. Could even chuck in a raise on the turn. Think their decision to stab turn seems suspect. When I check back this flop I basically always have some SDV. Duno what their plan was really. On river I only beat KQ and some underpairs that decided to bluff T+R but might not ever do that. Mistakes snowball though and decision not to cbet is clearly the ****up that cost me 60bb in the end.

Back at it tomorrow.
12-12-2018 , 09:40 AM
Had an extremely ****ty day yesterday. I wrote on Monday about finishing earlier to try to catch up with some sleep. Unfortunately I slept terribly and woke up yesterday groggy as ****. Coupled with some IRL stress and I ended up failing hard yesterday, both on the poker front and with the life-goals that I don't list ITT.

I've been thinking about my night-time habits and I'm definitely not helping myself. Whilst being fully aware of the fact that optimal rest can't be achieved if you have electronic devices in your room, I religiously fall asleep with my headphones on and youtube content playing. Sometimes hours will pass and I'll still be wide awake. It's only when I drift off and then wake up again that I'll lock the phone and go to bed. Sometimes I don't even manage to do that and just sleep whilst still wearing the headphones. If I lined up all the headphones I'd gone through over the years they'd look like they'd been to Afghanistan and back.

It's clear that I need to drastically address this garbage habit. It's severely impacting on my ability to reach my aspirations. Starting from today, I'll be putting away any phones, ipods or laptops in my bedroom. I'll put the phone in an open draw under some clothes and only have that for the alarm. I'll only have the bedside lamp and books before sleep. Reading is a fantastic habit that I've largely neglected throughout my life. It seems now is the time to kill two birds with one stone and address that too. A few weeks ago I played a squash league match against a bloke I'd never played before. To cut a long story short, we were chatting quite extensively post-match and he was a bright guy. I believe he also realised I was fairly intelligent and the topic of conversation moved onto reading. He was asking me if I'd read so and so and I was sheepishly saying no, and stopped short of telling him I barely read at all as I felt embarrassed at the realisation that had been brought to the forefront of my consciousness. I hope that, if ever a similar conversation occurs in the future, I can actually participate.

My body-clock isn't great at the moment. I'm falling asleep in the early morning hours and waking up past 11am. Ideally I want to get it so that I'm sleeping between 1am-8am, and mostly finishing grinding and being off the PC before midnight. It will take some days to get to that point, but I'll work towards trying to make it happen. I want this to be the norm in 2019.

I will be grinding today so will update later.
12-12-2018 , 03:17 PM
The light from tablets, laptops etc has a negative impact on the body clock in terms of trying to sleep so definitely get rid of them. I just tend to read a book for an hour before getting my head down.

I'm moving into a new flat in about a month and will be getting blackout blinds. The blinds in my current house are nice, but I in an urban area and they don't keep the light out well at all. Alongside implementing this reading habit, and getting my body-clock to a more healthy place, I reckon this should all help with basically all my goals, poker and fitness especially.

Some of the goals I've set for this week are a bit of a write-off, but I'll try to get some decent volume in over the next few days. And I'll try to play with more focus and discipline than I have been doing of late.

Shelly.

Had an awful goal-period. Volume/productivity has been embarrassing as my head has been up my arse. I'm extremely disappointed in myself, but this weekend has been an improvement so hopefully I can build up a bit of form between now and Christmas.

One of the few positives is that I've managed to put in a little volume 3-tabling (still failed that goal hard) so at least I've begun the process of transitioning to more h/hr. Overall didn't feel super uncomfortable, although I'll definitely be employing a more cautious, conservative approach to that process rather than just saying **** it and 3-tabling as standard.

I've decided to take the pressure off of the non-grinding goals and focus more on volume this coming week. The games are popping so I suppose for the rest of the month the focus will be primarily on grinding. I imagine the pool will only get softer just before Christmas and during Christmas week. Stuff like reading TMGOP and re-designing the HUD can wait until January when the pool will surely dry up somewhat. I'll still be saving spots and doing flopzilla reviews but the I won't be forcing the issue, will just be saving spots I find particularly interesting.

I don't want to get to next Sunday having failed this hard again. It's not a good feeling.
12-17-2018 , 09:26 PM
Tricky, swingy grind today. Feel like I ran over expectation in terms of the amount of tough spots I had to face. Fortunately I caught a few pockets of heat here and there so I'm hoping I didn't lose too much in the end. 2-tabled for over 4hrs but unfortunately didn't manage to put in the 3-tabling click, so I'm behind pace on that goal already. I wasn't close to my A-game today but I feel like I did well in general.

Back at it tomorrow. Looking for similar volume + some 3-tabling volume to get back towards pace on that goal. I've got to take my car in for a service in about 8hrs so that'll be a ballache and could affect how well I play. If I don't feel sharp I'll skip the 3-tabling.

Shelly.
12-18-2018 , 03:45 PM
Yo. 2-tabled for a little over 3hrs today. Didn't manage to get round to 3-tabling. I was going to play for longer but I woke up (what for me is) very early this morning to take my car in for a service. Feeling pretty groggy now and think it will probably be good to take the rest of the night off and try to get to bed early. I've said before that I ideally want my body-clock so I'm not sat on this PC into the wee hours. This is a big opportunity to make that reality.

Looking forward to getting some quality rest and coming back tomorrow fresher, sharper and ready to seize the day.
12-19-2018 , 08:03 PM
Played for over 5hrs today, including over an hour of 3-tabling. That's decent volume for me, around 2.5k hands. Feel like my stamina for grinding has increased. The only issue right now is constant disruptions WRT this incoming house-move, and then obviously Christmas. I can't wait to be settled in the new year and able to put in some better volume.

Unfortunately today was another swingy and largely brutal slog. On the plus side I think I made some good river laydowns that I maybe haven't been finding lately. However, some of the laydowns I'm making are getting criticised so I'm lacking confidence somewhat and feeling like I'm making some poor errors in river spots, unable to differentiate between what should be fairly simple folds and what are possible calls. It would be nice if I wasn't facing a gazillion puke river spots every day though.

I possibly won't be playing tomorrow, and if I do it'll be just a short session. Got a million things to do. Hopefully I'm getting the runbad out of the way before the weekend when I anticipate the games will be ****ing cray cray. The recs should be finishing work for the holidays and out in force. My plan is to put tidy volume in from Fri-Sun and hopefully run good enough to capitalise. Will be a bit depressing to run like I have for the last few days.

H5 - Reg opener and recs flatting in LP. Pretty annoying that the reg has this and not 88 or some of the non-broadway AXhh. Not sure if their flop check is a thing. What's their plan, to c/r top-set 4way with a flush blocker?

H7 - Somewhat tight PF reg. Kind of felt like they're never doing this with 99 and maybe not even TT at much frequency. Think post is fine. By river they can have some random Jx for sure.

H9 - Vs a rando who had made a bunch of 3bs in a small sample, including with A6s, but had also been fairly passive post and had only cbet 1/3 in 3bp. Kind of gross river but whenever I've somehow justified calls in these spots lately I've never seen the hands I've needed to see.

H10 - Vs an aggressive seeming rec. I'm hearing different opinions on this, but agree with the line of thinking that the sets and 2prs I'm donking to get called by would likely bet much bigger on turn, so it's way more likely to be FDs.

H14 - Vs a 19/17 reg right at the end, rec sb obv. Not sure about river decision. Didn't really expect their sets or 2pr to flat flop. Maybe some stuff like J9 and T9 could though? T8s also makes sense and they can definitely have a bunch of flushes. Think their decision not to 3b-jam is garbage.

Looking through the hands I think I need to start being more conscious of bet-sizes and what different sizes represent. It would likely help a lot.

If I manage to grind tomorrow I'll update. If not next post will be Friday.
