having done some rake races in my day, it's truly impressive how hard the winners end up going at it. lol tgigs you sweet summer child, thinking you can just jump straight into it and be competitive.

some of these dudes are ****in animals. respect to the ones who pull down legit winrates in the process, particularly on sites with no table caps.

me? i like to enjoy my life, personally speaking

tbf I've been really ill for more than half of the race and I just got a new boyfriend. if I had been playing 8-10 hours a day like I planned I'd still be in the top 5. oh well. gunna keep trying to clip along at a good wr and take down whatever extra I can get from it. playing a quick hour while my boyfriend cooks dinner. i love my life

definitely agree w/you in general, but I'm also super competitive and rake races bring that out in me

we know you are super competitive which is why you have such impressive winrate at 500zone (with a bit of run g00d).

There is always gonna be schmucks telling you that you cant achieve something. Had your boyfriend not been keeping you busy, I have no doubt you would be among the top performers.

lol I'm leaning toward this being a troll since I don't have a sample at 500z. but maybe you mean my 500nl reg tables sample (which isn't even that impressive, somewhere around 6bb/100 iirc)

all things considered I'm pretty happy with where I'm at in the rake race though. a lot of regs from week 1 went busto/gave up. I'm in 17th rn (worth $1750) but the climb to 12th ($3400) is pretty easy atm, maybe a 3-4 hour grind. from there it spreads out a bit.

just played 2k hands, +$250, -$250 ev.

This Month:
29k hands
+$5100 (+$7,770 ev)/ 25.5 bi (34 bi)

Depends what you deem as impressive. 6bb/100 is a very solid winrate in those games. Good to see you're getting over the sickness, gl in the rake race.

going off what others have told me, 9-11bb/100 is achievable. so I guess I'd consider 8+ impressive? it's just semantics though lol. I know that I can achieve better which is why I don't look at it and go, "wow, impressive." but I'm definitely happy with it.

thanks man.

played another 300 hands really quick, -$500, ran at ev.

So most def don't feel that way! Just make money and improve.

Headed back up to the Bay Area for Father’s Day and stopped at pechanga for some 2/5. Up $2700 so far after starting down $500. Flopping ridiculously good today

What a ridiculous session. After peaking around +3k I moved to a 5/5 game and bought in for $1500. Promptly bluffed that off then withered all the way down to -$500 on the night, but I made a comeback when the game became 4-handed to finish +$700. 4handed live poker with a mandatory straddle is a ton of fun. Especially when one of the 4 is a whale calling 15x preflop raises with 74o. It makes no sense to me that the game never filled and ended up dying even though the whale wanted to keep going

Just lost the most absurd hand. Live $5/$10, I open J9s in the co. Button, sb bb call. Flop QT6ssx, $160 in the pot. I bet $100, only the big blind calls. Turn is an off suit 8. Big blind insta jams $1300 into $360. I double check that I have the nuts and snap. He shows Q8 and yells Q!

It was a Q

Insta quit, lost $1500 on the session (6 hours) starting to worry about money tbh. Still have close to 20k but that’s the least I’ve had in a long time. I need to sit my ass down and grind some 50+ hour weeks at 200nl

Was feeling pretty down yesterday. Not about that hand... I’m honestly just upset at myself over how I’ve handled my finances. I’ve managed my money very poorly over the last 12-18 months. It’s especially embarrassing because I’ve always been very careful with my money. Since I first got a job at 16 there’s never been a time I’ve been broke or didn’t have the money to do something I wanted to do, because I saved every penny. I used to track every purchase I make, even if it was a $1 lighter. Stopped doing that once the money started coming in fast.

Spending isn’t really my problem though. Gambling is. I’ve gone a long time trying to pretend like it’s not a problem, but it is. The “shot taking” 1knl+ while drunk has to stop. Throwing down $300/game on ridiculous parlay bets during the nba playoffs and excusing it because “I only sports bet during the playoffs” has to stop. The big one though: putting all of my money into crypto instead of my bank account. I’ve lost close to mid 5 figs gambling on crypto. That has to stop.

I’ve always known that I love to gamble. I started playing blackjack before I started playing no limit Holdem. But I’ve been in denial that I have a gambling problem. I’m starting to recognize a lot of the signs in myself, especially the need to gamble more $ each time to get the same thrill. And unless I admit it to myself and hold myself accountable I’m going to keep gambling away most of what I earn on the poker table.

Anytime I decide to gamble (besides 200nl) I’ll be posting about it in the thread. Whether it’s a $5 bet with a friend, a decision to play higher stakes or a $1k purchase of X coin I’m going to post it here.

I have a set of rules that I do not break under any circumstances because of my addictive personality, would recommend same. Trust me on this amigo - you want an all or nothing policy with this kind of stuff, as anything addictive is also progressive and will find a way to sneak up on you if you’re not hyper vigilant.

Everyone is different, but I don’t touch any form of gambling that isn’t poker (I don’t even buy lotto tickets), and all my shots are calculated according to my roll, not other factors (“felt great, amazing game”, etc).

Keep on top of it and you’ll succeed man! As a successful poker player you have already shown you can maintain the level of self discipline necessary to do well in this industry. Ive got no doubt you can conquer the tendencies.

**fwiw, look around - PGC is mostly a graveyard of people who failed at this pursuit and its almost always smart and capable guys with life leaks, who started out with gambling for fun and games (flips, sports, random ****) and ended with problems that prevented them from succeeding. My favorite thing about poker is that success directly correlates with bringing your best every day. Take the pursuit seriously and you’ll be just fine

+1, especially the last part. Try not to beat yourself up too much about past mistakes since you can't do anything about them now other than learn from it. It's super hard to last a long time in this profession due to all the external factors more than just the playing poker side of things. I'm lucky that I don't really have any temptations to gamble at -ev things other than some small gambling with friends for fun so I can't give any meaningful advice on that stuff. But oldapio's advice of having strict rules in place seems like good advice imo. Proper bankroll mgmt seems to be one of your more pressing issues so hopefully you can figure out something that works for you there. For most people full time poker is really only going to end up having been worth it if you set yourself up to thrive as opposed to just surviving/getting by year to year. Gl!
