About me
Iv been playing spins fulltime for the last 8months, before playing spins served in the Infantry in the british army for 4 1/2 years and drove 28 tonne wagons for a year when I left that job, I used to 4 table microstakes zoom always dreaming about becoming a pro but reality was I was just **** and going nowhere...

I used to play computer games competetively when I was younger and I won alot of tournaments so iv always had the competetive mindset, which led me to learning HU hypers, I got some coaching from a friend and the plan was to learn some HU and jump into the spins pool.

I found a stable (Evolve Staking) and made alot of friends that helped me move up, I watched the stable grow from nothing into a top stable and now do some mentoring/DB work for the stable.

Poker
Just moved up to mixing some 60s into my grind and hopefully get some results there and move up to 100s within the next 3/4months.

Here are my recent results:

I am currently doing a little prop bet with a stable friend trying to increase my volume, I used to be a big volume grinder but have let it slip recently so im trying to do 200 hours in the next 30 days, if I dont make it then the forfeit is I have to grow a moustache for 2months and shave the rest of my face.

Backed out of the volume challenge, ended up doing more harm than good and i dropped quite alot of EV forcing myself to grind while i was feeling **** or the games were **** so just gonna go back to my usual routine.

planning on playing alot more 60s this month, looked through my database and seems like iv been doing really badly vs regs so im spending 2-3 hours a night studying my reg game, starting HU and then will move onto 3H.

Here are novembers results, volume could/should of been way better but i had alot of days off drinking/hungover

December plan is no less than 2k games, spending most of my time at 60s and hopefully hitting the required EV to shot 100s before the end of the year

I have spun 2 100x (3k) and 2 200x (6k) all at $30s but I have only won 1 of the 200x, i took some serious coolers in both 100x, 99 < A5o like 17bb deep to lose one and the other was something like JJ < AK vs a guy ripping ATC

Months going ok so far, not as good as i hoped but i think iv been playing really good and i have been running super bad 3H.

Winrates are pretty much all piss poor apart from my HUSB, need to work on my 3H and my goal is 55+ cev over 2k games this month which gets me a shot at 100s

invested my first ever money into cryptocurrency, only read a little bit into it but mainly I need to get some savings behind me and i thought this would be a better way than leaving it in the bank, i stuck money on mIOTA after getting tipped by a friend and it tripled within the next 2days so i took the money and moved it into REQ (Request Network) iv heard good things about it, its valued super low and supposed to be releasing a test model before the 22nd so im hoping to cash in on it

Little xmas update from my last month.

did OK but not as much volume as i would of liked, had a few pretty nasty baby downswings that put me on tilt instantly and iv never seen myself get so angry before so think i need to work on my mental game.....

22nd dec - 22nd jan goals
1. minimum 2k games, would like more but i still want to be putting quality in over quantity

2. boost 60s cev and get myself a shot at 100s (need 2k games with 55cev)

3. fix my schedule and get back to training MMA and get myself to the gym 3 times a week + training, ideally want to atleast do some kind of fitness every weekday

4. 3 litres of water a day, every day with no excuses, i find myself some days not even drinking anything other than coffee and it must be killing my body

Former spins grinder here. Things I wish I had done then that I've only started to do now. These might be things only I struggle with though

1. Focus on life balance/general well-being so that when poker isn't going well I'm excited to spend time away from it. Exercise, eating well, doing non-poker activities you enjoy shouldn't be optional unless you're one of the few who feel fine without any of that

2. Quality over quantity (like you identified), much better to play 1500 games of A+ game in a month than 3k B game and slowly burning yourself out.

3. Minimum 1.5 days off a week (personally). At least one day a week just doing what you want/love and some other time to stay on top of general life stuff. With online poker especially it can be tough to distinguish leisure time from work time imo. There's value in taking a full day off rather than putting in a few games because you have the time and energy.

4. Work on mental game every day, don't stop just because you notice improvement.

The happier you are overall the better your results will be and the better you will do on a yearly/lifetime basis. More than any other game spins can be brutal and huge amounts are lost by almost everyone due to spew.

I can relate to 3/4 of these, they are on my whiteboard list

1. I find hard myself, find it hard to step away and enjoy my day if iv had a bad day at the tables, unless im going out drinking with friends i will dodge life activities like gym and jobs i need to do etc

2. 100% agree, those days you put in way too many games just to chase losses or hit a volume goal can massively decrease cev

3. I personally dont have planned days off and im pretty confident i dont need them (YET) my days off are usually unplanned or if i have a special occasion, but i am pretty confident i dont burn out easily

4. This is my biggest thing atm, last week i had a few days where i lost like 10kcev which isnt even that much really and i couldnt take losing a hand, dont think iv ever been so angry, luckily i have a punch bag in my room so nothing got broke this time, but iv still not got through TMGOP after maybe 10+ attempts so i need to get that done

Games have been amazing on the christmas period iv never seen 60s so juicy, got the go ahead to shot 100s today so just waiting for stars to remove my BI restriction and then i will be grinding, excited to get started and cant see them being any tougher than 60s, i actually expect them to be easier.....

just looking back on my goals i set earlier they are all looking pretty good so far.

1. minimum 2k games, would like more but i still want to be putting quality in over quantity <---- will pump this up starting tommorow when i gwt into the 100s pool, still be quality over quantity tho for sure

2. boost 60s cev and get myself a shot at 100s (need 2k games with 55cev) <-- pretty much mission complete

3. fix my schedule and get back to training MMA and get myself to the gym 3 times a week + training, ideally want to atleast do some kind of fitness every weekday <--- actually got in the gym tonight and started this, hopefully ill stick at it because iv just bought a **** tonne of protein and products, looking at getting back into MMA probably late jan/early feb

4. 3 litres of water a day, every day with no excuses, i find myself some days not even drinking anything other than coffee and it must be killing my body <--- iv definately improved with water intake and id say im doing minimum 2 ltrs atm, so its good but not good enough i want to make it 3 minimum but i should be able to drink 1 ltr in the gym

wanted to add one more goal after Nefirmative's post and thats to work on my mental game as my main focus.

5. Work on mental game atleast a few times per week

Gonna start reading The mental game of poker for the 10th time in about 15 minutes, hopefully ill complete it this time!

Hi Grant. I think I'm in the same spot you were in before you switched to spins. I usually play 4-tables of 50NL Zoom. I have been stuck there for ages. Finding it a bit depressing to be honest. What led to your decision to quit cash games? I've looked into playing tournaments or spins, but you need to be very good at HU for those and especially spins. Unfortunately I have no HU experience. How long did it take you to get good at HU?

I think it all depends on your goals, you might enjoy the cash games its nice lowish variance and doesnt get super stressful, if winrate is low then i think best thing to do is drop some tables and really think about every spot, spend wayyyy more time studying the population and there are always spots where you dont feel good, but its the "standard" thing to do, i think those are the important spots and after some time studying you realise they can actually be avoided.

me quitting cash games was just due to them being so boring and nitty, like you say its pretty depressing but i think thats just ebcause theres alot of folding going on and alot of spots you finally pick up a TP and get raised on turn and its like yep you got me beat, fold and wait another 10mins for a hand....
spins has wayyyyyy more action and its hard to get bored playing them imo

I wouldnt reccomend tournaments mainly because they are just a sick grind and i think they can take over your life, id say go for spins if you want action and excitement, iv been playing spins since january and had 1months experience playing $3 hypers before i started, so basically no experience at all and i picked it up pretty fast

Doing well so far since my last update, been playing solely 100s and feeling good there so far not seeing anything different from regs and still seems to be a decent amount of fish.

sticking to most of my goals pretty well, drinking the right amount of water each day has been hard because im not used to it, some days i wouldnt even drink any water at all but now iv bought this half gallon bottle from myprotein and i just try to drink a full one each day.

been sticking to the gym routine not missed a day yet and feeling really good about it,when im in the gym it helps me with the water goal aswell because i drink ALOT while im in there

Yea makes a change from the usual move up, play/run ****, convince yourself games are unbeatable, move back down, rinse and repeat until you get some confidence

thanks!
