Just a good week...!

...and I'll push the thorough update back to next week because I am sort of hammered emotionally after a really long session.

Have a nice weekend folks!

Focusing on the challenges you may encounter on your way has habitually put you into a certain state of mind, but consider for a moment that it doesn’t have to be that way…

Because you know that you get to create your feelings and it has always been this way… and the fact that you used to create problem states in order to focus on solving even small problems can be used in a way (by you) so that the small problem of putting yourself into bad states for solving problems just turns out to be a footnote of history…

Doesn't that feel great on that first day of being done with it for good?

Because the state that you’re putting yourself in right now can be that sort of state that you’re used to when you’re sitting down to take a moment for yourself to

Stop and think.

Because now that you're learning that you get to think about things in a new way every time, what does that feel like? To realize that you can make things add up that never did, even if you don’t like the result. You can squint a little and pretend that the colors are just a little more intense and that the light is just a bit better right where you are even if you never thought of it that way before…

And the more you get used to getting this sort of distance to your own life once you sit down and think in this way the more you begin to relax. What used to look like a blazing sun from up close made you feel the heat…

But with a certain amount of distance it’s just one star in the night sky and if you don’t feel cool about it quite yet then at least you know that you are going to when the nights get cooler towards the end of summer.

And knowing that you’re about to solve a problem already makes you begin to feel good in just the way that it feels good to have solved a small problem that you used to deal with for days, weeks or even months.

I’ve heard rumors that some people have even carried around the same problem for years…

But surely those aren’t true (anymore) now that we all know where to look in order to realize that we can feel good about solving a small problem right now in this easy way… I mean, that’s what the internet is for, right?

(BONUS Breath taking strategy inside)

After 14 more hours of poker, bankroll is at 342% (-35%).

The past two months have been the roughest by far this year. I hope things turn around sooner rather than later. So let's take a break together:

When you check in with your body from time to time, you may experience an unpleasant surprise. Many poker players do too much of several things, but let’s mention two and focus on one:

Shallow breathing and bad posture.

Shallow breathing - A really good breath goes like this: Breathe in for 5.5 seconds, breathe out for 5.5 seconds. That’ll be 5.5 breaths per minute. You can even try breathing as slowly as you can. Can you manage to take just six, five, four and finally three breaths per two minutes? Good.

Taking a break requires (Step 1) that you make a plan to take a break (When?) and then (Step 2) follow through by actually getting up to take that break at the aforementioned time. It then requires (Step 3) you to fill the first minute with a break taking exercise of your choice and gradually work your way up from there. Three new steps, taken somewhere slightly beyond your comfort zone exhaust a certain part of you, so take three steps and rest, then take 4 steps and rest, …, and so on until you can fill a 15 minute break with useful things. At which point, maybe in a week or two, you may ask yourself (But not yet): “So what types of useful things could that be?”

Eat - Sleep - PLO (minus PLO) is a good starting point. If you enter a Social Dilemma when you take a break (You know the usual suspects: Youtube, Facebook, Twitter), it’s a break from this for that, that’s true, but then you know full well that you need a break from that too (Because for most people, that that is exhausting and getting more and more exhausting with each passing day) and this (meaning work) isn’t a good break from that, or anything for that matter, if you’re learning efficiently (Deliberate Practise) while you’re working, which would be useful.

So if you want to get a break from doing this, your that needs to be refreshing. What’s refreshing for you? How about starting with a cool drink and working your way up towards taking a cold shower in one, two, three or even six months?

That’s refreshing. Even the thought is refreshing. So is thinking something that you can use to refresh yourself? It depends what you think about, of course…

And how do you know that you’re thinking of something nice? Because you can feel your body react. Even when you read about new ideas in a sort of light and playful way you feel good about it.

So let that be your little piece of newness for the day.

Have a good weekend and stay humble!

Hola Jose and thank you so much for the kind words. And yes, I am back indeed. So let's address the elephant in the room first: Who are you? Mind shooting me a PM or messaging me on Skype to jog my memory? That would be dandy.

As far as this blog goes, it's a bit different from what I used to do so if you feel like there's something missing that you want in here let me know what types of posts you want, and I'll add that to my list of things to do.

“Have you got what it takes to move up?” He asked me. Good question...

...to be left behind. See, I’ve begun to realize by now that you’ve either got what it takes or you can decide to acquire it. And as I learn more and more about this acquisition of skills that make me grow in exactly the right way for me, I make sense of them by writing them down. So here’s some of that writing that’s really cool:

The moving up mindset, as I call it, is different from what most people think because it makes moving up feel much more easy than people with a victim mentality (read: most people) think is possible for them. You don’t grind, you play with that bang that sounds like this:

POW! - Patient Observant Winner

Make no mistake: When you take a beating (POW! POW! POW!) it hurts, but when you’re drilling (POW! POW! POW!) you need to remain in that state of patience and be observant anyway as if the pain just meant that you’re doing the right thing (POW! POW! POW!).

What you also need is grit, as has been observed by much smarter people than me, but I can define it as a professional would:

GRIT - Great Radical Immersive Time

Grit feels Great, it’s Radical (because a mindset that sets you apart from that crowd that you want to leave behind for a while, or even forever, is radical: It requires courage and determination in the fact of obstacles and even great difficulty), it’s Immersive (see: The Zone) and it’s Time well spent (see also: Deliberate Practise) because conscious time, when you don’t lose your sense of time passing, is one way of making sure to spend time in a useful way like you would when you meditate, but losing that sense of spending time when you’ve entered the zone is another way of beginning to enter this expert mindset of grit.

And now it's your turn:

Take those two compact building blocks and experiment with using them to improve your game with a POW: What's it like for you to play around with playing like that (POW! POW! POW!)? How deeply can you go right now into that mindset of grit? And what changes after five sessions of practise, after ten sessions, even after fifty sessions? At that point, can you still relate to who you were fifty sessions ago when you take a moment to look back and notice your progress?

After 15 more hours of poker, bankroll is at 322% (-20%).

The past two months have been the roughest by far this year. I hope things turn around sooner rather than later. So let's ask a question together (or maybe not?):

“Are you even a winner?” I keep asking myself when things go poorly. It’s a good question…

…to be looked at from a meta perspective:

When do you ask it?

If you’re willing to be honest, you've got to take a step back first and then contemplate this question in order to learn what you need to know in order to begin to grow into the person you want to become.

Or are you already doing that anyway? Cause if you listen to most people, you’ll discover that they aren’t. It’s not something I generally aim to be curious about, but you just can’t avoid it, can you?

The truth is that there are questions that you should ask at very specific points throughout your day, your week, your month or even your year. If you haven’t won anything this month, you could ask that question after those 4 weeks and two or three days (which I call a month, on average), but then move on to the next step right away:

What you can do in order to find out?

You could look at your aiev. You could get your play reviewed by a buddy or a coach. You could run some sims on your intuitions and see whether your estimations are generally good, or off by a small, medium or large margin.

But no matter what you decide to do: Don’t let the question sneak up on you, that’s the big one. “Beware!” a neon colored sign in your mind would say, and you’d have some cameras installed. Don’t let it sneak up on you, because you’ll regret it.

So what happens if you ask it monthly and with discipline?

Even then, with tens of thousands of new hands under your belt, often the answer is going to be that you need to be mindful of your progress in the next month, and even in the month after that. By that point, you’ll have asked that question three times. This might be 100,000 hands later. If you had no win rate, or a small win rate over those 100,000 hands, then you can answer the question for that period of time. It’s that kind of slow rhythm that you need to feel in order to deal with this question effectively.

So take it slow, man, maybe not only when it comes to this.

I think edges are quite dynamic in poker. There is also always the possibility that a given game is not fair, and that by no fault of your own, a game is harder to win at than you should reasonably expect if it were fair.
In that sense, I think it is fair to evaluate your edge on a situational basis, and not take it as a foregone conclusion.

I think the danger with thinking in terms of "I am a winner", more generally speaking, is that it is similar to entitlement thinking. This could be a dangerous mindset to have, as it facilitates blind spots.

I like to think that when I play poker, I am taking some sort of calculated risk based on estimates of my edge in a certain environment, and I have sanity checks that I reference as I move from session to session, day to day and month to month.
One sanity check is that I really emphasize improving, because this is the most proactive thing I can do to ensure that my presumed edge is true, or if it isn't then this should also become apparent fairly quickly. For longer stretches of time, using a variance simulator to look at the probability of a certain outcome happening, compared to our prior assumptions thereof, can be helpful.
Another sanity check is how close are you to your A game when you play. Are you well rested? Are you eating well? Is there something unresolved in your life that you need to address? These are all things that can give you an edge over your opponents, but that are also easy to overlook if you just focus on the game play itself, since this is meta game.

These ideas are not meant to be in contrast to what you wrote, but rather my viewpoint on this topic. It's an important topic to be aware of.

When I need to work on my game, I enter the lab. In the lab the environment is just right, because you can feel it when there’s a great work environment. And over hundreds of hours per year that makes a huge different to feel good when you’re working.

Sometimes I ask people who say that they’re afraid of burning out: “Can you remember what it used to feel like when work was just fun?” And they always remember after a while. Sometimes you can even see them smile.

When work is fun, it’s just a string of quiet moments of contemplation, of deep focus, of deeper concentration and even joy. That’s what it’s like when work is fun.

Can you remember what it was like when work was fun?” I asked a guy with hollow eyes. He said that he couldn’t, but I knew he wasn’t listening. That’s also in the cards for all of us if we don’t have our eyes on the prize.

So create something semi permanent like a goal, like a focal point” I once read but back then I didn’t know how to do that so it didn’t make me smile yet. “What’s permanent about a goal?” you may ask. Many more things that are much more permanent usually occur to you at this point, which is good because it means that you are beginning to open up to the possibility that goals and focal points are the most permanent things in your life. A hint that helped me is that big goals and big focal points are called values and that makes me feel motivated to figure out what values there are, and how permanent I can make them. I believe that some values are as permanent as me, which isn’t that impressive, but it’s also not that bad. A poker session is much less permanent, even a terrible year is just a long blink compared to that. Thank god.

So when you enter the lab, make sure to feel good about yourself. Take a deep breath, or stretch a little. Practice smiling in front of the mirror and do it every time you get a result out of your work, even a small one. Just allow yourself a small smile because those things add up and you often only realize weeks, months or even years later what they added up to.

What remains? Or to put it differently: What happens if you drop useful suggestions into an open mind? You my discover that you’ll find out for yourself.

After 11 more hours of poker, I've won some back, but right now the movement is so small that I won't bother adding it up. Was a good week, both in terms of progress and in terms of results. More of these, please!

Three things I've learned:

- When you’ve got time, you can start a session, as if session starting was a sort of skill, and go from there because then at least you can’t go back.
- You can make it easier to quit early when it isn’t going well and it’s affecting you emotionally for beginning to reprogram your nervous system to feel better when playing poker.
- When you feel some pressure you could begin to breathe slowly and deeply to feel better and man it works!

Mosquito's aren't pleasant animals for humans. If you've felt the discomfort of a mosquito bite, you know what I am talking about. Taking a moment to remember the itching and the pain gives the sensation the sort of presence of an unpleasant memory, and you remember the pain and the itching intensely if you take that time. You know that a mosquito looks small, but it's got an unpleasant effect.

But let's put things into perspective: On a nice summer day when you can feel the sunshine on your skin and when you've got something nice (or something sexy...) to look forward to, a mosquito bite is unpleasant but as a sensation it's probably almost as small as the mosquito looks on the vast landscape of your skin. Depending what types of thoughts you're lost in, it can even be non-existent. "What? Ah yea, that's a mosquito bite. Didn't even realize I had it."

When you're going on an eight hour hike, feet and legs hurting from yesterday's grueling walk, things feel differently...

It's the same bite in a different context.

When small annoyances add up, the context really matters. Even one small annoyance can feel like it's one too many, depending how you look at it. And sometimes it can even feel like you've got no choice but to look at it a certain way.

It's the same at the poker table, of course. But it's a good start to realize what sort of size those annoyances are if they were a certain a size, even visually. Let's even question whether a mosquito is the right animal, metaphorically speaking:

Are those regs like grown men shoving you around? Are they like cats, hissing at you or even scratching you? Are they like mosquito's and you get the occasional bite? Or are they like flies and you just don't like the feeling of a fly on your skin?

If you put things into perspective, you can feel even better, even if you're already feeling really good. And feeling better is always a great start.

Was a terribly hectic week due to real life stuff, so not much happened. As I missed my post on Tuesday, I'll give away a free mental game session one more time. Past sessions have been amazing, so make sure to send me a PM letting me know...

...Why you want that mental game session. What's your project? What's your goal? What are you trying to achieve? In short: What would we be talking about?

Chat with at least one of you next week! I'll pick a lucky winner by Tuesday and notify him or her via PM. Good luck!

If you don’t engage, I can’t reach you. So lean back.

I’ve once read that the mentor or the coach or even the guru is like the snake, and the student is like the hypnotist playing the flute to which the snake finds itself moving.

“You’ve got to move the flute” is what I sometimes tell myself, because at times I can’t even reach myself. It might be too much input, which can paralyze you. It might be a sort of mental or physical exhaustion stemming from too little sleep, or bad sleep or even too much sleep and too little movement. If you’re not moving the flute right now you can develop some awareness around it. It can feel like vapor this idea that you’ve got to get going. “Why?” some ask. “What for?” others wonder. The snake doesn’t know. You may not want to move because you like comfort. I certainly do. “People like comfort too much” some say, but how would you know that, I wonder.

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned from listening to Tristan Harris talk about social media then it’s that there’s a stop cue for some things and that there isn’t for others, and that’s the problem. Tim Urban said (and I paraphrase) that the problem with procrastinating when it comes to things without deadlines is that you never get a cue to stop. Let me write that one more time so that I can read it again because this feels as important as a bee sting feels unpleasant (and there’s really no point to both from a certain perspective… what are insects even for? I don’t see it): You can miss your life because you’re waiting for a cue to stop missing your life that never comes. It’s like that endless feed and you never stop scrolling. But man, relax. “You don’t have to do everything by yourself” as Richard Bandler told a mentally ill person (schizophrenic? Not sure. Something serious) several times in one session. But who tells me?

If you begin moving the flute then the snake helps you move. It’s a feedback loop and good feedback leads to good adjustments every time.

Before I get to the point I like to use a bit of a story, or even a metaphor, as a way to be more open-minded.

First it makes me open my mind, which means that there’s a chance that you can use it to open your mind, too. I begin to think creatively more and more, you begin to think creatively more and more. I relax, you relax. And it all works through the medium of a text that you can read at your own pace and speed. Which was the story. Let's move on to what's really important.

Because you're about to read this when your mind is open, if you're like most people, it's about to work even better for you by creating activity in the regions of your mind that are associated with learning, growth and deeper focus than normal. You'll know that this is happening when you begin to get curious about what's to come. This in turn means that you can use these little things that I'm about to write about (but that I won't spell out for your conscious mind) like tools of the mind that you’ve sort of needed to learn for weeks, months or even years and apply them to make your own life better in the future.

So please make your life better.

Whether you do it today, tomorrow or in 2 weeks - as long as you don’t start in five years you’ll be happy that you made that first step to improve your own life in a way that's useful for you. There are two things that I’d like to explore today, one of which isn’t important and you already know it, but you need it for the second thing which is much more important and many people don’t know it at all and haven’t even thought of it yet. So here’s the first thing:

Ideally, you can keep this in the back of your mind, just as a reminder:
You know that you’re an expert with great resources at your disposal only if you know that you are.
So that’s what we all know because we’ve all done things really well without knowing it at all, which means that even though you’ve got the same skills, the same knowledge, and the same resources as somebody who does something really well, then you really aren’t an expert yet. You could say that you’re only rich if you know that you’re rich.

I like to tell children this: “Stop and think for a moment. Even if there’s a bank account in your name somewhere that could buy you cars, houses, islands: You’d need to know it in order to make use of it, first. So what if there was such a bank account full of riches that you just haven’t known about?
That’s when they look really excited. You can see shining eyes and some even smile. Which is when you know that they get it so then you can move on to the next thing. I’d ask young adults: “Is this why cultures and sages all over the globe have always talked about the pursuit of self knowledge?” because they usually know something about that already even thought they don’t know how to use it. Once people have grown up you can say to them: "And here’s the second thing." Maybe remind them to keep breathing. Don't hold your breath for too long when you're excited.

You’ll never find out if you don’t ask yourself: “What are the resources that I’ve accumulated over the years?

When I read "resource" I think "phone". Because your phone is so powerful and such a potential force for good in your life. But that still means that you've got to use it for good.

Which crises have you mastered? Which fun and exciting states have you experienced? What’s easy for you that’s hard for others? What are your weaknesses that are strengths in a different context and what’s that context?

These questions are tools that open your mind: You could go to a place and do something in a way that a weakness becomes a strength. You could appreciate yourself more. You could re-write your past. You could live better. So that’s the second thing. Having read this up to this point means that you want to grow. And if there’s that passion then you’ve got experience with being passionate about things. You’re good at that. Who knows what could stop you. “Find out.” is what I’ve got hanging on my wall, and I know what it means when I look at it every morning.

Slow progress, and asking a lot of questions. #Freeflow

"What sort of spot is this spot?" is something that I wondered today when I hit an awkward board in a three bet pot. I guess I've got a job to do, which is why I keep coming back to the tables day after day. I get in 2 hrs on most days and it's good that I keep that up, five days a week during most weeks. There is a sort of consistency to it which I am happy about.

EV's are often close in poker... it's sort of like in real life situations when rational decision makers make unconscious decisions that can be understood from a game theory perspective, and that's what poker is like too. When you play poker, you're a strategist and strategy is much bigger that I used to think. As an approach, strategy is an awareness in most situations. Even when you buy a coffee you can make the best of that interaction and there are strategies that people have. Curiosity opens up certain strategic options, boredom makes you make use of others. You can dominate your opponents in poker if you've got the right strategic options available to you and if your perspective is useful. That's something that I remind myself of. In fact, you can really make the best of many hands. When break even is the new downswing, then you're on a good path. Take responsibility for your results this way. #ramblings

So when you zone in then even rambling can be useful. There can be a sort of discipline in that. You may let your mind wander, but you can do it with focus. That's good. Which, as you know, brings us to the topic of happiness. It's only logical. There's focus for you. Where's focus? There's focus. #MentalClarity

Focus on curiosity for a moment... whatever you do, focus. Curiosity, an open mind, that's a strength of mine, so much so that it hurts sometimes. At least it used to. #NotesToFutureSelf

So it turns out that we all love Phil G. He's one of the Phil's.

Discovering a new way of writing... bear with me. #LearningByDoing

Looking back at the last couple of days I realize that there's much left to do. Some people have an awareness of who's at the table, and that's certainly a strength. The more you practice it the better you probably get and I wouldn't underestimate it. Something else is that you can use a feeling as a trigger to think something useful. For example when you get annoyed by something that annoyance could be a sign how much you still care about poker, how much you got that drive and that passion to improve, which is a good thing. Simple things often do the trick: I've found myself making sense of my range in my own mind in really simplistic ways that guide my play, and it works.

Zoom out: A session has a storyline whether you realize it or not. It's connected to your level of play against a handful of regs, or simply to your graph for that session. In hindsight you may find that it was a good session, or an eventful one, or a grind. Those are stories that you tell yourself and they can help get you focused and engaged, or do the opposite. It's up to you.

Zoom back in on one hand that just hit a bad flop: "This hand doesn't look so good" is one way of using your intuitions, "I don't feel good about this hand" is another one. Can you spot the difference?

Is it the hand, or is it you? Clarity and confidence are to be desired, but are they in the cards for you, so to speak?
If you don't have those then you may find yourself drifting, in which case I'd love to play against you. It would likely be not only profitable, but also a lot of fun for me because I enjoy seeing people make planless calls and raises against me, it makes poker feel easy.
There's that tension that's just right for me, and every now and then I practice creating it against somebody who I pick for that exercise. Folding a couple of times in a row creates tension, for example.
I've also dwelled on emptying my mind routinely again, which has been likened to taking a morning shower for the mind. I like that analogy.
One thing I've taken note of is that there's a connection between making plans for your hands, executing those plans well and your no-showdown winnings at the end of the day, the week and the month.
It's the same when you consider whether you're worried about getting bluffed somewhere or that you aren't, which can help guide your play. Little things, I know, but I am not a gto bot. I need human reasoning and sense making in order to have a clear direction sometimes.
Now I remember a conversation I had with a coach once about small stakes grinders obsession with putting in a lot of volume. He thought that it probably hurts them. I hope he's right.
One thing that kept happening was that I could basically bet knowing which cards villain would hit, which is really something that I love doing and I think it can help make you a buck here and there if you can do it too...
Same with betting and raising for protection. You'd think that I had mastered it long ago, but it always comes down to asking "What does that have to do with me?" - You can grasp a concept but never do the nitty-gritty work of grinding out the details of using it well which is something that I am very guilty of and it has cost me dearly.
So don't slip, that's also something that I've realized. Be careful not to slip. Unless you got ice-skates on, in which case "slipping" is called "skating" and it's the right thing to do!
I got rewarded for the way I played a hand this week, which feels good. Even though it was just one hand. Even though I only really realized it in hindsight. Even though it seems like such a small feat. It still makes me feel good.
Four, three, two, ace!

Down a little bit, won't bother adding it all up. #ConsistencyIsKey

Edit: 8 hours played. 4 hours of working on my game. #UsefulStuffAddsUp

Instead, here's a free-flowing recap of things that I've learned:

When you open the lobbies, there may already be a sort of gut reaction to the prospect of playing, I call that the entrance-state because when you make a great entrance, that's already a big part of playing a good session. Everybody's got an inner mountain to climb, whether it's warm or cold there, whether there's snow or sand. Some of us take breaks, others don't, and some haven't moved on for a long time. There's still that mountain to deal with, and who knows what's up there. It's all economics when you're an energy system as we all are. It's much more economical to streamline your emotions (which used to mean "muscle movements") and your intentions so that they point towards the same goal.

On the other hand, there's that feeling of "I don't understand this game". If that was a landscape, it would be foggy and murky. It's a big task to deal with your anxiety there and finally, after many steps, reach a state of boredom. That's where things begin to get really interesting. Because then you discover some tension that you can manipulate to your advantage, which is a big theme in my play because I used to be a pussy who couldn't deal with tension at all. People who can't deal with tension need to see villain's hand way too often in order to calm down again which hurts your game a lot.

Remember: Most things that matter aren't flashy. They are simple and repetitive and you need to do them over and over again. Whether your range is weak or strong or something in between: You've got to play those in-between hands in a solid way every time. You've got to value bet. You've got to semibluff. You've got to bluff. You've seen it all before, and you've got to keep doing it and do it many times over. You can also experiment with lines and sizes, but those are edge-cases. The bulk of the stuff that really matters is the solid stuff, especially when you get better and better. Having a poker mind that can be likened to a well-oiled machine is big progress as that's one theme that's really useful. It's the opposite of floating, I would suggest, because when I am in no-mans land then I float, and it makes me anxious. The opposite is to get a grip.

All that said, I missed two posts because I went away for a few days. Send me a PM and get a free session. You'll be notified on wednesday or thursday next week if you're the lucky winner. Let me suggest a way of getting a lot out of even one session (The first session with a new coach is always the one that matters most): People who get a lot out of sessions know what their task is and where they're going, so that's good preparation to figure out where you want to go with this so that your mental state can help you get there. We all need strategies, but your amygdala isn't going to help you execute them well. Mental game is about execution. Your brain is as powerful as you know how to use it, so to speak if that even makes sense. It's confusing, but using your brain for a change is as solid as it gets when it comes to good advice, so think better and get better results. Still confused? Good. If you know how to get yourself out of confusion and into clarity then you'll do that, in fact you can't not do it. And if you don't then now is the time to figure out how it works for you. Good luck.

And talk to you soon!
