Really annoying session. Started the night calling a bit too light and paid off a couple small/medium sized pots. Played more aggressively than I had been and it was working well. Got up to +1300 in a couple hours.

Last two hours just got wrecked.
-Four bet AA and against lost to a flopped set QQ. This month I must be .500 or worse with aces.
-Value bet QQ on A995A river, and got called by KK.
-Cbet JJ utg into 3 players. A passive limp fish check raised me from BB and I hero folded on dry board with over pair.


Not sure if it's just random variance or something I'm psychologically doing where I get up +1k and then I seem to always crash in the second half of the session and up negative or losing a lot of my winnings. Probably just random variance but something to be aware of in future sessions. It feels like it's happening more than it should be.

Thinking about the last two hours I think those three bet pots I was getting involved in I wasn't really doing as much in the first half of the session. I have been nursing a headache for a while and felt maybe a bit of entitlement tilt at that point after losing a couple hands.

OP, did you quit your job or are you banking on the teachers' union strong-arming the government into not letting schools go back to in-person learning?

If I feel a table is good and I’m playing well I keep playing. I used to play just insanely long sessions and mentally and physically it was too draining.

I feel comfortable with my deep stack play. I think the past week it’s a combination of I just get complacent and I’ve run into coolers. I’ve lost with aces all in pre for 100bb+ several times this week.

It is note worthy though that before I was running up four+ buy in stacks not infrequently and I haven’t been able to do that like I used to.

I quit my job. There were a lot of factors that went into it but last year remote training was miserable for me and I knew that it would happen again this year for a long stretch of time.

Between that and the itch for me to try poker because I always felt like I could make significantly more money, it felt like it was the right time to take a shot.

I love teaching and my students and didn’t choose teaching for the money. I honestly feel like I would have been successful in a lot more lucrative fields. But I’m not sure teaching and all that work for **** pay is 4x as rewarding as playing poker and having no mandatory schedule, and making more money in less hours.

As for the snarkiness about teachers I’m sensing. I don’t know a single teacher who hasn’t bitched and moaned about how miserable it is teaching remotely. How it’s more work, more difficult, and not fun at all. I can’t speak for every teacher in the country but I specifically didn’t go back to teaching this year because I expected it to be remote.

Teachers are not lazy and just trying to get out of working. There isn’t a teacher in the entire world that chose the job because it’s easy money. If we wanted that there are much easier paths. Starting salary for teachers in the United States is a complete joke and you don’t make a “good living” until 20+ years of grinding at horrible pay.

I have a friend that is a teacher and her school went back, but she drew the short straw and had to be the teacher that did remote learning for the kids who didn't want to/couldn't go back.

I get that it is potentially more money up front with poker over teaching, but you made no mention of a pension. In many states a very large % of a teacher's compensation package is the pension they get when they retire.

Also, the risk of getting fired from you job is essentially 0 unless you sleep with a student or hit one. I can appreciate a person wanting to leave the comfy confines of a nearly risk free job to go after another job with a lot of risk and a lot of potential reward. Congrats and good luck!

Agreed. We need to end all pensions for (new) teachers, offer fair buy-outs for ones that have been around a while and five them raises.

I mean again I can't speak for every teacher or union in America. There is a lot that goes into it. A big part of that is also many of my teaching friends are on the lower age bracket of the spectrum, but I know there is a lot of concern for older teachers because there is a large demographic of them in the teaching world. You don't have many (virtually any) young retirees as teachers.
That's very true, there is a lot of value in job security and benefits.

I feel very comfortable with my poker abilities and my health has always been pretty good. I'm currently running ~20 miles a week and don't have much worry about typical poor-health issues like diabetes, heart complications, etc. Just need to be smart with saving as I get older.

100%. The entire education system as a whole has been warped. There is no reason billions of dollars should be funneled to all these relatively unimportant things while child development and education takes a backseat.

Teachers have a shockingly low retention as a job profession. 50% of teachers quit in the first five years. That is insane to me. I like to think I was a very successful teacher by both professional review + student success in competitions. And I also think I can be successful in other fields for less work and more money. I imagine there are many other teachers that feel that way and the education system becomes less strong when 1. strong teachers walk away for other options and 2. strong academics and prospects choose more lucrative careers in the first place.

It's been just random variance I'm pretty sure. It's not been nearly large enough a sample size to read too much into it.

It happened again. Was booking a 1.2k profit for the first half of the night. Second half of the night steadily went down until ended -727.

I was playing a bit too tight and got bullied a couple times. Every single choice I made was the complete wrong one. Every time I bluffed I ran into station/value and every time I went for value I got snap folds.

Last hand of the night I three bet with A4cc vs KQcc. Flop came three clubs. Turn he hit the straight flush. Called it a night after that hand.
