Re: Poker Vlogging: Its a thing

A smattering of recent vlogs. Enjoy.

Mr. Dorson details a beautiful day in Las Vegas, takes in 2 or 3 sessions at a few different spots.

Nightcrawler takes us through Ellis Island over on Paradise and a hop over to Caesar's poker room.

JVF tells us why he prefers tournaments over cash games.

Andrew releases his vlog from footage shot just prior to #EyeGate. Its Eye Opening to See into the Eye of the Poker Storm.

Jason Caster shows us around his new home casino, Riverwind.

Pinoy Image has popped up and slipped out a new vlog. He's had a little run bad and took a break. Well that happens, sir. Run gooder.

Like you said the population varies a bit between MDL and MGM NH but in both rooms the majority of the people you sit with even at 1/3 are regular poker players. Most are not necessarily studied but they're not new to the game or completely clueless. At MGM you still see some people clearly trying the game for the first time but even there that's slowed down.

Now that doesn't make them good at all. You get typically bad-reg type play - tons of limping preflop and generally overly passive play. The real fish do exist but they're maybe 10-20% of the pool.

Andrew - be sure to let us know when you get out to this area. MGM National Harbor is definitely worth a visit. I think Brad did pretty well on his trip out here. I'll have to find you and buy you a beer after enjoying all the vlogs.

Perfect I was just about to post this one. Good vlog, I like the look around the Hard Rock Seminole. Pretty good HH too.
dez
A lot of new ones popped last night or this morning.

Pokerkraut puts out his first in a series of People Watching Vlogs -- so no poker at all, just a view up and down Freemont street with a lot of the usual street performers and some average passersby wearing very ... interesting choices for "clothing" (a technicality for garments that can be measured by the square centimeter in coverage)

Boski hits up a $235 Rio Deepstack Daily and a Wynn $1,100 with $1M gtd!

James Chavana releases his first (as far as I know) English language vlog. He is the guy who I have posted before who does vlogs in Thai. English is not his first language, but you can understand him fairly well. He is playing at the Rio. He has a personal challenge of $8k in 5 days and this is vlog of day #1.

Papi releases a vlog of their crazy $1/1 PLO game at the Mirage from Monday night. For LATB fans, you will see Colleen to his left. She also appeared in Tuesday and Wednesday's LATB. Also featured: Doug Polk, Andrew Neeme, and JNandez

JNandez plays poker -- LIVE! His first trip to the WSOP and the Rio, he jumps in the $3k PLO event. Includes an entry-level tour of the convention center / WSOP area. Very useful / interesting for voyeurs especially if you haven't been able to come out to see the Rio in person.

Advantage Player runs into Zach (from LATB ... I assume Freeman, but he didn't specify), plays 5-10, experiments with edibles and playing, some heated conversations around the table. TIME SUCK WARNING: This vlog is 33 minutes so don't have anywhere to go when you start.

And finally, Mr. Dorson has released a new one - the Germans are in Town!

Good fun slate today! Enjoy!

Nice stuff - I liked the candor and self-reflection at the end. A lot of vloggers don't do this, and I for one thing it provides a nice window.

Good luck with the coach. You need help playing lower pocket pairs on low flops. Your thinking is too level 2, when it really needs to be level 3. One of three things has occurred - (1) your opponent has over cards and whiffed, your opponent has an overpair too and has to worry about what you have, or (3) your opponent crushed the flop. The third scenario happens very, very infrequently, so act as if its (1) or (2). Be aggressive and raise more, since if you raise on the flop and things look bad, you can shut down and end up losing less than calling three streets. Let's see what your coach says, but I tend to think you flat call too much in general - folding or raising is likely the better play at least 25% of the time.

That being said, I think your approach on the 8c7c hands was reasonable. And smart to factor in his stack size - a lot of 1-2 players wouldn't pause to consider that.

Ouch on traveling 8+ hours round trip for not even a 4 hour session. That is not a recipe for playing well nor a satisfying experience. I will never go to play at a place where it will take longer to come and go than the time I'll be there to play. For sure it affects your game when you put yourself in a situation like that. Either you need to stay overnight or depart for the casino earlier in the day.

Interesting about the recommendations videos. I like seeing your interludes about food and culture, but I'm not sure about videos specifically about what you recommend. Well see though. Good luck.

"I love you cannon"

What are you like a history professor or something?
Oh wait ...

I appreciate the honest analysis of your session as well as the hand analysis. That's an odd line to take with KK for sure, but don't forget, especially at these lowest limits of play, you have a lot of unsophisticated players at the table who just don't play at your level. Don't forget that -- I see that a lot on this web site and in vloggers in general, they improve their game (and that's great) but then they are all surprised when others at the table didn't do all the things they did to improve their game. This stuff still happens plenty at 2-5, 5-10 etc but as a percentage of the player base it gets less as stakes go up. It never seems to hit 0% though.

Enjoyed the vlog. Thanks for enjoyable content! Hope you have a great vacation!

Re: Poker Vlogging: Its a thing

James Chavana continues in English for Days 2 and 3 (check his channel) and below is Day 4 which I found more interesting. One day left in his timeline for $8k, will he make it somehow?

Neeme and Brad host another 2-5 party game, this time @ Mandalay Bay. Andrew recounts the fun in this vlog.

Plus at least one other.

Jeff Boski spews off on an uncharacteristic rant regarding illogical and meaningless player chatter.

Plus at least one other.

Feather is back in town; the Kraut has a rough go.

Plus at least one other.

Advantage player with several entertaining stories from the land of 5-10 (no HH today). Also weed.

Plus at least one other since I last posted his.

Daniel has also kept up his daily vlogs -- he is in the final 7 of the $50k PPC (as I'm typing) so I'm greatly looking forward to tomorrow's update.

Re: Poker Vlogging: Its a thing

PokerMonk - Very solid. I like the additional HA, its always good to see the variety of what are good folds especially relatively tough ones like the KK on a low board which is usually Dream Flop territory for KK.
I'm headed your way next week -- Need to pick one or two nights M-F next week to play at National Harbor in the evening. Thoughts or recommendations are welcome for best night of the week to play.

WSOP is winding down and the vlogs are catching up. Here are several I noticed recently.

Advantage Player describes more escapades at the table, floor mate's escapades and general LV shenanigans.

Brad Owen played in the Monster Stack and was down to a few big blinds on the bubble. Check out the story below to see how he ended his Monster Stack tourney.

Daniel continues after, unfortunately, busting 5th in the PPC, rips the $1.5k razz and then jumps into the $3k NLH. He gives some understandable, but not usually expressed, commentary about the level of play in 3k events versus the 10k+ events -- tapping the glass on the tank in his own vlog. Danny! Don't scare the fish away!

Neeme takes in the CLP and Up Swing pre-main event parties and slides in some of the fun in the vlog. Oh and some poker too. A "quick session", that was actually a quick session.

The "other Andrew" takes a few shots at the Golden Nugget and goes cliff diving.

JNandez popped out two recently - one in which he drops $15k in a session of bad run outs and this one where he rakes in $54k in a session of (mostly) good run outs. Not a spoiler, because he put this in the title.
I think he is warming to LIVE PLO.

Pinoy Image hits up the Salt Flats and the Peppermill.

and finally, our favorite over the top ballah poker vlogger draws Seat 1 for day 2 of the $3k NLH and has aforementioned DNEGS in Seat 2 at his table. Was Danny tapping the glass regarding ManzPlayz? Surely it was those other guys ...

If you push out a vlog - you don't have to wait for me to post it! Get in here and let us know about it!

Re: Poker Vlogging: Its a thing

Pokermonk - your new vlog was enjoyable, but not as much my cup of tea. I certainly can understand the desire for more hand analysis and less "real life" stuff, if that's what the majority of your audience, plus - my guess - it making the vlog easier to shoot and edit. But I for one liked what you did in vlogs 20-25, which had more of a "here's my life that includes poker" flavor to it.

I'm also not sold on the benefit you'll get from coaching. I compare it to golf in a way, where lots of casual golfers see the best players using the Titliest Pro V1x golf ball, so they rush out to get it, not realizing the ball is poorly suited to "hackers." I think players in your shoes would most benefit from simply absorbing content and playing/watching hands. Also, from the sheer amount of books you've read I worry that you have so much information running around your head that you might be in overload.

Long story short - your new format is just fine and I'll continue to watch and enjoy it, but hopefully there will still be a place for a window into real life.

Re: Poker Vlogging: Its a thing

The trick to vlogs (that I enjoy the best at least) is that balance between poker, real life and just plain old scenery. There's not a precise mix that's perfect but it's easy to go too far either way. Like there's a guy Poker Statistician who does basically all hand analysis with a replayer and I find it pretty dry. Or you can go to the other end and be like Trooper and just film visits to Starbucks and then complain about how bad you ran. Poker Monk is usually in the sweet spot of just enough of everything (though he can tell the wife that drone footage would help)

The real difference maker though is you have to be likable. Take Advantage Player for example. I suspect he might be a nice guy but his delivery comes across as so arrogant I can't stand the guy. Or the OG Trooper who's just so negative all the time that I just unsubbed and avoid him.

Neeme, Poker Kraut and Poker Monk are my must watch immediately crew.
Brad Owen, Pinoy Image, Matt Vaugn, Ryan Frechette I will watch pretty much all the time.
All of those guys are usually in that sweet spot of the right mix of content and they're likable and sometimes funny.

Others like Poker Statistician, Pond Boy, Poker Priest I'll watch sometimes but not always.

Oddly the big name guys are the ones I watch most rarely - Doug Polk, DNegs, Alec Torelli - gotta be something special about the video that catches my eye.

Glad to see you're sticking to your posting schedule even amid the uptick in poker study. It's too bad you're unable to find time to do the lifestyle stuff for the time being, as I'm not as much of a fan of "my journey" type vlogs. But it seems you need to do this for you, and viewership seems steady if not improved, so kudos and good luck. Rest assured though, I'll keep watching and rooting for you in all aspects.

Again you were victimized by a too late departure cutting into your playing time for the first session. Still no luck in trying to negotiate an overnight stay? What about driving up the night before, and then waking up already there? Glad to see you able to depart earlier for the second session.

The playing out loud concept is useful. I definitely did that online back in the day. I'd liken it to reviewing an essay by reading it out loud versus just skimming it without speaking. It's time very well spent for sure.

Did your coach say anything about focusing selectively? For example, if a coach touches upon three different aspects of play between your live sessions, would the coach want you to focus equally on all three when you play next? I ask because I think you said you were going to try to apply all the concepts you learned, and that struck me as somewhat surprising. Look at something like golf - if you work on putting, driving, and chipping with your coach, I think the norm might only try to focus on just one of the three concepts at a time out of concern if you do to much all at once it will convolute you.

One piece of advice for you to work on with your coach would be when to shift perception of your assigned value for a player's pre-flop raise. While I agree that the J-10 raise seems unusual given the player and him being UTG, you need to be more prepared to adjust your perceptions midhand.

Thanks for all this! It really does mean a lot to me when you take the time to give feedback.

In August I'm going to start doing more overnight stays. I really like playing at Maryland Live so I'm going to get a room out there, play an afternoon session, take a break for dinner, play an evening session, then a morning/afternoon session before heading home. Gonna try and do this at least 3 or 4 times in August. Plus gonna try to take a trip out to either AC or Philly to put in a lot of poker time.

You're absolutely right about focus on one thing at a time. I'm definitely doing this with my online practice. I'll choose one thing, say opening up my range LP, experimenting with bet sizing, hand reading, etc., and work only on that for maybe 30 to 45 minutes, take a break, reflect, then put in another session and continue to work on the same thing or switch to some other aspect of my play I'm working on.
When I'm playing live, I tend to try and work on a couple different things just because the game moves so slow and I just feel like I've got a ton of time to kill. Like between hands I can practice putting people on ranges, looking for tells, etc.

We haven't talked much about adjusting shifting my perception of pre-flop assigned values, but I'm sure we'll talk about that a lot as we get some more sessions under our belt (we've only had two sessions so far and we're taking this week off because I'm out of town on vacation). That said, he does watch the vlog and gives me notes on the hands I analyze, and that includes that JT. Haven't had a chance to read his notes on this latest video but I'm sure he touches on that.

Thanks again for all the great feedback!

Re: Poker Vlogging: Its a thing

Had a nice family vacation last week and was a few days behind on vlogs anyway. A lot of the regular guys have put something out recently, here is what caught my attention as I caught up:

Manz continues his Cult of Personality Shtick in the Little One for One Drop event. Get laid, get paid as Stapes might say.

James wraps up his Vegas trip -- did he make his goal? Also on his channel, his return to MGM National Harbor. I visited his area this last week, I looked around for him at MGM but alas did not spot him.

Andrew and Brad host another fan meet up game, this time at the Rio poker room (not WSOP cash games) and they have special guest (not a spoiler b/c his mug is on the thumbnail) Phil Hellmuth. What's better than playing a little 2-5 with the Poker Brat? This is Andrew's vlog on the matter. Also on his channel - an hour long live Mail On The Couch episode featuring Busi and Benjis.

Speaking of the fan meet up game, here is Brad's vlog on the matter. As his title says, Phil check raises Brad when he has aces -- what to do? Also on Brad's channel - Day 2 of the ME.

Jeff Boski details his run at the Crazy 8s event. Also on his channel - a special interview with aforementioned Brad Owen. Warning, trigger alert: Boski trolls Trooper. Also on his channel -- I suppose with the series winding down he is taking the time to catch up because he released like 6 vlogs in the last week. All chasing the MTT dream as per usual. GG Jeff!

Kevin has been running so good, he's broke! Wait what? Remember that project list from his first vlog? There are a lot of check marks now. Fear not, he has a solution!

Dale takes a family trip to SoCal, gets trolled by his wife for wearing a Space Jam tank top, and plays 5-5 at Commerce. Dale, I don't think you can appreciate how aggressive Commerce is compared to the Horseshoe. And how much more aggressive the locals at Stones are beyond that. Best of luck to you Wednesday though!

Mark, the Aussie living in Portland, returns from six weeks in Las Vegas and provides a summary of the trip. Be prepared for Big O hand analysis that, I'm pretty sure, you won't find anywhere else. At least no where I have seen.

There were many, many, many others. I watched a somewhat uncompelling Polker Vlog where he notes he'll be stepping back from more active vlogging post-series and will mostly go back to more or less what he was doing before. Too bad, I thought he was a good entry into the mix, but whatever. Content creators gotta create and its not like they are getting a huge pay check to do it. For the love of the content do they toil.

VLOGGER GAME this Wednesday on STONES LIVE. Twitch dot tv slash stoneslivepoker Andrew, Jeff, Brad, Dale, Ray have all noted they are going. Kevin has both said yes and no at different times. Tim said no. Somehow I think Pete Manzinelli's invite got lost in the post. And as Neeme pointed out in an earlier vlog with Polk, Doug was not invited and the game was full. lol. I expect Neeme will release a vlog about the game by Friday, Brad will probably release his by the following Friday. Jeff, Dale and Kevin probably by the Friday after that, and Ray of course will be sometime in August when he releases his July vlog. So look for all of those plus replay of the event on Twitch or YouTube.

Finally improving production quality now that I'm back from the series. Should be dramatically better compared to two weeks ago.
