PLO/ Life... Built BR 1200 to 45k... thread 2 PLO/ Life... Built BR 1200 to 45k... thread 2

Hero is a 29 year old, part time PLO player and full time fitness professional.

As the title suggests, this is my second thread. The first one was more centered around my journey to getting sober at age 24. I will link the thread somewhere below.

The thread started with me having $1200 bankroll, and now I’m happy to say that bankroll has been built to 45k. Almost exclusively from playing PLO .3/.6 6 max online and live games with 2/2/5 1k cap.

This thread will serve as an opportunity for some people to see into the great game of PLO, allow me to think on paper, and give some insight to my life and mindset.

I am very grateful for the life I live today, and am excited to continue the journey.

Cheers to life !

Poker.. especially live poker is funny. It is very similar to fitness/ golf to me in the sense of plateaus. Long stretches of momentum followed by the opposite. I think my biggest takeaway over the last 6 weeks is how mindset might be my biggest edge in these games. PLO has a way of tilting people in spots when they are actually 1. Not that far ahead or 2. Overvaluing a hand.

Very breakeven start to July thus far. We have been a little card dead and unable to hold up in a few key spots. Among one of them... (KKJ2hhdd versus AA93ss on (KQ2ss) ... we flat IP on flop. We pot turn IP. And river went check/ check on a KQ2ss 4d Ac board; ( so we lose minimum after taking our positional advantage on the flop/ pot controlling/good strong hand to put in check/ call bucket IMO)... we are only a 65/35 favorite but it was a pot that would have gotten us to 2kish in a 1k cap where deep stack would have been preferable...

Going down to foxwoods for 3 nights this weekend. Will be good to be in a new player pool for a few days; their 2.5 seems to be running 2-3 games on weekends.

Cheers !

Went down to Foxwoods last weekend, was under weather whole time.... and have to say..... worst PLO games I’ve probably ever played in. So short stacked and nitty/passive. Was there for Friday/ Saturday/ Sunday and all 3 days were bad ( at least at 2.5).

Super card dead and got stuck 845 over 3 days. It’s been a slow 6 weeks for me as I came back from Foxwoods about 3kish off my profitrolls peak of 46.8k.

From Tuesday to today ( Saturday night)... we had some nice run between online and live. Been kind of just playing whatever PLO4/5/6 games look best at the .3/.6-.5/1 stakes online. Had a big night at .5/1 PLO just running well and playing tight. And then parlayed that into back to back solid sessions live to make about $1400ish over last 5 days.

Had some dream spots live with AJ98ddcc versus a stubborn KKJ7sss on 1073dd when we check/ pot and he reships for $500... we turn A and river 6 for good measure. And a similar spot we have A246hhdd versus KK77cc on J42hh we raise pot on flop and he shoves for $600 and we turn 5h.

2021 by month so far:

Feb: +4,432
Mar: +7,058
Apr: + 5,948
May: +4,510
June: -2,137
July: +302

Wasn’t playing any live in 2021 until Feb. 8. But those numbers are online + live. Live has been way more profitable, we are up $18,000 live and up $2,459 online.

Have been listening to a lot of mindset audio lately; been relistening to some of my favorite podcast episodes from like 2015-2017. Listened to the Naval Ravikant/ Tim Ferris podcast episode about 2-3x over last 2 weeks. Very great episode.

Cheers !

Got absolutely crushed tonight playing .5/1 6 card PLO. It’s a game I’ve had some success at online looking for easy spots. Lost $1280 or 2.8% of my bankroll over 4 tables/ 4 hours. Wouldn’t say I was tilted, but in any close spot that I was unsure if I flat pre or raise ( I was raising )... so I guess taking on that unnecessary variance is a form of tilt. To end the night I paid off a donkey with K high flush versus his A high flush, when he checked flop 3 ways. Bet $4 into 39 on turn, I raised to 30. River is another club he checks I bet half pot and he min raises... and in that moment I knew I had to end session. Complete punt to finish the session... all while this was going on I got it in preflop 51/49 AA10754sscc versus AKJ987 and we managed to run it 3 times at 51% and lose each.

Yikes.... not editing the post and writing it before sleep to really capture the moment.... I’m disappointed. I think I’m unsure what my next chapter of my life is career wise; and in the mean time this 2k hours of poker has been a great way to justify a relaxed lifestyle.

Poker is a cruel teacher, I can feel my patience during breakeven stretches isn’t the same as what it once was. Have a buddys bacheleor party in Vermont this weekend so it will be a good break from poker; can still scrape out a winning month in July and be 6/7 in terms of winning months in 2021.... finding my gratitude and looking forward to moving into my next level of thinking.

ProfitRoll: $43,740

After this 2-3k downswing back to the 42-44k range, I decided to log every hand in a 7 hour 2-2-5 session. Overall was dealt 101 hands, when I am at a computer will log every single one; think it’s a useful thing to do to give someone reading a sense of what a usual day at these stakes looks like. ( spoiler we got into the game for $2200 at a 1k cap so I think it’s a slightly interesting day ) !!

Back at it, was on biggest downswing ever, even with only 60-70% of my own action; my profit chart dropped from 46.7k to 40.5k.

It took awhile and some run good but happy to report it is back up to 46.5k/ 2064 hours.

Most of that upswing has been 2/2 1k buyin PLO. Felt I was getting a little out of line in some spots and along with running well, have tightened up ranges in certain spots.

Hit a straight flush over quad jacks to get a mini bad beat jackpot that paid out $1500 to me plus the pot was close to $1000.

It seems the app games such as pokerbros, a lot of the value has dried up ( which was to be expected)… with that said it’s still such an amazing way to learn ranges and board textures that I can’t recommend enough to people who are learning PLO. .3/.6 120 max PLO has the same level of play ( on average ) as a 5/5/10 $2500 max live game.

Excited to be back on 2+2.

Yessir, Pokerbros, I’ll 4 table out at $120 max buyin for the .3/.6. Once in awhile you get some dream spots where 200 Big Blinds allows you to play some decent sized pots….

I receive 35% rakeback so not terrible. My agent has been super reliable, and on pokerbros I am at 821 hours / $13,523.

$16/ hour feels like a decent hourly for those stakes. I think I’ve been stabbing too much IP lately on board textures I should be checking, used to belong to PLO mastermind by JNandez so might rejoin for January.

Thanks, it has definitely been a cool run. Trying to stay present and grateful for it.

Finding the little wins in your own journey is one of the biggest things that compounds itself into momentum and longer term success IMO.

Had a really big week and a half or so... went on an $5,200 upswing in PLO/DFS. +++$3889/ 56 hours in poker in December.

As far as poker goes we have hit a new all time high on the poker chart at $48,031 profit roll.

Saw the biggest pot I ever have seen at 2/2/5 1k Max ( or at least biggest pot I have seen over the last 2k hours).... 4 way allin with 5 players all preflop for barely under $10k... AA96hh flopped the stone cold nuts with flush and board ran clean.

I had a run good spot with J4KKhh...... overlimped in the HJ ($1200) I cover all. 5 ways to the flop of KJ7. SB (super tight) leads $25, call, we call, call, call.

Turn KJ74cc(125).... SB ($800) leads 110, fold, we make it 350..... short stack flats, tight reg flats, and SB ( super tight reg) borderline tank calls. So backdoor flush draw presents on turn and we know we probably need to fade a wrap, a nut club draw, and at this point I am very confident SB ( who I have played hundreds of hours with... has 77).

KJ74CC (1525).... river is the gorgeous case KING.

Insta checks to me and we bet 175... given we block the entire board with KKJ4 we are really just trying to get a crying call, and the two presumed draws behind us insta fold, and the SB tanks and folds. The 175 was extremely situational as the two players behind me essentially mucked once the river didnt improve them, so the 175 is essentially a heads up bet versus SB ( super tight reg)...

Fun spot to share given how hard it is to fade the entire board there, blocking a lot of our own full house outs.

Glad to be updating again and be more excited about playing poker again !

Wanted to post my first thread in here, I started it in 2016 and it documents a lot of my journey during that time in 1-2 NL and life in general. Its amazing to read and see how life changes over 5 years. Most of my transition into PLO at the end of 2019 early 2020 I did not document on 2+2; but still think there is some sound 1-2 and life strategy in there. Hope this link works properly !

Very pumped to write that I have crossed the 50k barrier. Had solid months back to back in December and January, bringing the BR up to $51,158 over 2173 hours.

Live PLO we are at about $37/ HR ( Including the BR share I have of myself which is about 68%). So the gross # ( including promotions ) is about 51-52/ HR. It is really all the online PLO $16/hr that is weighing against that for my overall hourly.

Its funny been re-reading the Jeff Hwang Advanced Pot Limit Omaha book from about ten years ago ?

It is truly amazing how much the game can change in a decade. That book would not be super helpful for grinding online nowadays, but still very relevant to live PLO.

Have been struggling with my mindset lately a bit, my fitness jobs keep me tied to MA for the middle part of the week ( work 24 hours T,W,TH).... but I am someone who really struggles with winter in Massachusetts and would love to be able to move to a more online presence for work so I could travel more for PLO. Such an advantage to be a new face in a PLO game and get paid off easier without as much worry for balancing IMO.

Want to be able to play more in other states, so that is a goal moving forward.

Anyways, cheers, grateful for those reading and following.

Online low stakes with PokerBros typical rake structure can be slightly profitable in a public union. The real profitability comes from home groups you trust ( or making your own ). The games were much better during early 2020 and have since been very average. Without rakeback in a typical rake structure I do not think it’s worthwhile. I get 35% RB.

Impressive!

Do you coach?

What would you suggest to aspiring player, who has roll for micro stakes and can play either PokerStars, GGpoker or apps. What is the best choice for bank roll building now?

Obv, that aspiring player is me hehe.

glgl and thank you for the inspiration.

Coaching is something I will probably consider in the future. Given my background with 7 years in fitness and journey of sobriety I have a unique amount of experience for a 2022 30 y.o to help people on the felt and off.

Pokerbros is so dependent on if you trust your agent and your rakeback. I have had a great experience but the .3/.6 120 max stakes were soooo much juicier in 2020/2021 than current state…. the BEST EV play is to create your own group, invite mediocre players and make some rake and some soft money while being a reputable host. Even if it is 15-20 people and you play 2 tables of PLO 2x a week. General public is bad at PLO.

I have not been able to play a $$$$ hand on pokerstars for almost a decade now so do not have a pulse on that site. Used to love it as a teenager.

Macro advice:

Meditate. Poker can be really tough when we are functioning from a reactive versus proactive place.

Exercise and eat right

Set process oriented goals

Have leverage over yourself. Almost every thread that goes wrong on 2+2 is because someone said f*ck it. You need to have leverage over yourself to stay in the disciplined path as to not get sucked into the reactive mindset we witness in the poker world.

Wrote this in a parking lot on the run so excuse any errors

Stay in touch man, good luck, and enjoy the process and who you become from it
