Old man`s quest to break even? Old man`s quest to break even?

Hello,

So I decided to make a PCG thread for motivation and to get critisism for my horrible plays/punt`s and ICM suicides so that I can hopefully learn something and improve my game

Some info about myself:
I am 34 years old, have been running my own company for 8-9 years and worked very much.
Due to recent development and some physical issues I have been forced to put that on hold.
So I will take a 6 month sabbatical, play poker, train and get in shape again.
After that, who knows
I have an ok economic situation and will not be dependent on any poker income.

A few words about my poker background etc.

-I have been playing as a rec since about 2002-2003, on and off. some periods more then other, never took poker serious though.

-I have most likely lost more money than I have won probably was in the green before 2009 and in the red after. hehe

-I mostly plays tournaments now and this thread will be tournaments only. Mostly NL, but also some Omaha Hi lo and 8 game etc as I enjoy these formats as well.

-I will play up to 12$ buy in`s for now

What I plan to do the next months:

-Play play play.
-I will probably play 5-6 days a week.
-Study poker as well, something I have never done except for passive studying like watching stream`s/videos etc.
-Post HH and spots in this thread and hopefully get some pointer`s from the bright young minds here
Who knows, maybe I can make a few bucks on the side on this hobby in the coming years if I improve.

I will start with what I have on the pokersites now which is 800$ and see what happens, probably too small to play up to 12$ tournament`s but I will just reload if I go bust.

It`s soon time to start the first session, will post after it if there is any interesting spots or maybe some nice runs

A little update after todays session.

Booked a win of 129$.
Happy with that, but it really should have been more.
Made 3 final tables, and a few other close runs.
Two of the final tables were really small fields on 888.

- Won the $200 guaranteed omaha 6-max turbo 1R1A on 888 for 90.73$ (a win is allways nice
-Chopped the $300 guaranteed NL omaha Hi-Lo on 888 for 77.57$

Then I was supposed to finish of the day on a high note, came in at 3/8 in a 5K guaranteed tournament on party, 874$ for first.
Managed to crash out in 11 hands in 8th place for $69,50

The ICM Suicide monster and tilt/lack of focus cost me on this final table.
I also have some mental game issues to take care of, sometimes I do follow up mistakes after beats. Also have a bad tendency to act too quickly once in a while (confirmed buttonclicker)
Will work on this starting tomorrow! I also get tired (I`m Old) late in sessions and make more mistakes, not really a good combo for tournament poker this, feck me

Will share a few hands:

First hand of the final table is quite standard, min open 99 utg, and MP goes all in with 5 bbs.
He has 1010 and holds.

Then the hand after:

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.41 BB) Hero has Jd Qc
fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, SB calls 0.5 BB, Hero checks

Flop : (2.91 BB, 2 players) 8c Tc 5h

Turn : (6.39 BB, 2 players) Qh

(Pre 33%, Flop 76%, Turn 73%)

Hero shows Jd Qc (One Pair, Queens)
(Pre 67%, Flop 24%, Turn 27%)

SB wins 37.92 BB

Haha, I mean it is BVB and I have top pair with a gutshot on the turn, he shoves over 2x pot, still a pretty clear fold I think? ICM wise etc
Did not even think it through in the hand, instacall for some reason

Then hand 11 I shove 109off 9 bbs SB vs BB and run into QQ
This is also quite standard I think, I was the shortstack at the time - play to win

Anyone has any good tips for mental game study?

Well, that was it for today. Back at it tomorrow!

I bought sharkscope today.
And also checked my username on the sites I have played over the last years.
It was as I expected a pretty red looking affair

In total as of today I am 4594$ in loss over 4156 tournaments since 2009.
From 2002 to 2014 I mostly played cashgame though, probably in the red here as well.

This really gives me motivation though.
I have been playing after heavy work weeks, I have been playing drunk, tired and so on.
And It have really not been any consistency at all.
These next 6 months will be different.

I have great determination and work ethic when I set my mind too it, the goal will be to get even and then in the green in my total tournament poker "career".
Failure really is not an option
This, combined with getting back to my match weight of 84-85 kgs my current weight is 97-98kgs will be my goal for 2018.
I will be in the best shape overall of my life when I hit 35 in the end of this year.
I was a real gymrat before though, so I will never be as strong as I was when I was 26-27. But the overall fitness will be better

Just done 1,5 hour hike, had a smoothie and are ready to hit the virtual felt!

The start of the session today was really a struggle, ended up one tabling one deep run in the Big tuesday Kick-Off 10K Gtd 11$ on partypoker.

Some hands from this tournament:

I had written a loong post with multiple hand histories here, ended up deleting it and for some reason it has not shown up in my pokertracker.
Really annoying. Hopefully it will be imported and I can share the hands tomorrow.

But I guess I won`t dwell on it, because I chopped the tournament! some redemption for yesterdays failure I agreed to a deal as the chipleader HU, exhausted from playing 11 hours
Cashed for 1628,98$

For some reason I can`t manage to upload images here? so you will have to take my word for it or look it up

Found the hand`s on pokertracker, because of the deal it did not automaticly log the win. Did not know that so did not find the tournament

So a few hands:

River : (35.81 BB, 2 players) Jc
Hero bets 56.84 BB and is all-in, fold

Hero wins 92.65 BB

This bluff I am not to sure about, it felt good at the time though. I might be torching money here, hope some of you have some views

My thought process here is that I think he bets his AcKc, AcQc on the flop with overs and backdoor clubs. I also think he bets his AJ/QQ/KK/AA here 3handed for value most of the time. So that leaves his monster`s JJ/99 and sometimes QQ/KK/AA that he checks, this and all his air highcards/underpairs etc.

I also think I have the most Jacks here, and the most flushdraws when I lead the turn, so I lead the turn and did not really believe his reraise. called and the J of clubs should favour me and give me most of the trips/boats/flushes here.

So I decided to lead overshove the pot here to put pressure on his value QQ/KK/AA which should have a hard time calling for it`s tournament life here, but also to get him to fold all his Air/overcards that beat me in showdown. He folded quickly luckily views?

Hero mucks Jd Kd (Flush, Ace High)

When he min 3 bets pre here and checks flop and turn it just screams AA when he raises the river He only had 1% 3 bet as well. BUT still I can`t manage to let it go for that price on the river (I`m to weak ), guess it`s never a bluff though?
I think the play is to just check - call the river tbh. views?

3 handed in the tournament, I liked this semibluff with the added pressure of ICM because of the shortstack. It might be totally standard though, but I thought he was forced to fold almost everything against a reraise here on the turn except for when he is nuttet with sets/flushes ofcourse.
When I think about it, maybe I should just call as well since my hand is pretty strong...hmm, views?

Still can`t manage to post pictures, have tried to read FAQ and everything but don`t find the "browse" button too find the pictures on the computer?
And the insert image button just gives me option to find it on a URL.
Thankfull for any pointers

Day off yesterday, on the grind again today.

Managed a win today as well, won the Zone30 10euro buy in on winamax for
223Euro and 236euro in bounties, very nice and some other small cashes.
Fish on a small heater here I guess.
A bit tired so have not been playing my usual 8 tables, have been playing 4-6.
How some of you can play 15+ is beyond me

-noted 150 people with my silver sharkscope thing as well, which was a pretty boring task tbh. But I guess it will pay off when more and more players is noted.

-I think I will focus most of my games on 888/party and winamax for the time being, and avoid the big fields on Pokerstars except some on saturdays/sundays.

I think I found out the picture thing though!

The win from two days ago:

Todays win:

Back at it tomorrow.
Will post some graphs etc when I have played for a month

Pretty non- eventful weekend of cards. Still, have booked a small profit since thursday.
Made a final table on party friday for 386,59$ and some other deep runs. 9th in the monday KO 11$ on party where I just busted 15 minutes ago after I pushed 13 Bbs with Ah2h from SB , BB woke up with 66 and no help

Feeling quite confident about my play though, helps to play almost every day and not be tired or hammered while playing. Who Knew?

Maybe a day off tomorrow, or I might just play as well if I feel like it

Been playing every day from monday until today this week.
Made a deal 3 handed in the "deep run" on winamax for 242.91 euro and came 12! for a bit over 100$ in the 7,50 progressive knockout on stars.
Otherwise this week has been a bit like Bitcoin`s week, a slippery slope downhill

Have a spot in the 7,50$ progressive which was my bustout spot. Dunno about this, might be Overly aggressive...

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.25 BB) Hero has Ac Qs
UTG raises to 2.21 BB, fold, fold, Hero raises to 27.3 BB and is all-in, fold, fold, UTG calls 25.09 BB

Flop : (56.86 BB, 2 players) 5h 2s 3d

Turn : (56.86 BB, 2 players) 5c

River : (56.86 BB, 2 players) Jh

UTG shows As Ks (One Pair, Fives)
(Pre 75%, Flop 80%, Turn 82%)

Hero shows Ac Qs (One Pair, Fives)
(Pre 25%, Flop 20%, Turn 18%)

UTG wins 56.86 BB

So UTG opens here as the second big stack, quite active and has MP here with 5 bbs and a reasonable bounty so he should be opening quite wide.
I wake up with AQ off here on the button and just move in. Thought about 3bet as well, but what am I 3bet folding this? would be to 3bet call it off? it`s 6 handed (13 left) as well, close to the final table.

I dunno, is this shove too loose? What do you guys think? He should be opening quite wide for the bounty in MP here and is second chipleader at the table.
I still think I should get a ton of folds here, and also flip with 99-JJ a fair amount when we do get called.
I don`t know, a frustrating end to the tournament but that`s how it is.

Think I`ll take tomorrow off whatch some soccer and relax, it`s also eating day in my diet which is fantastic! looking forward to that

A little update:

Have played every day since sunday and I really enjoy playing regularly.
A few good results this week:

3`rd in the 8-8-8 5k guaranteed on 888 on sunday for 741$

A bit annoyed on myself after this 3rd place finish, did not play very well 3 handed

A second here in the deep run.

Seem to like this tournament, now have 3 final tables in the last week

This is the sickest triple beat in key big spots on a night for me (So far ), and all with aces! Won`t win much money loosing these spots on a regular basis

Training and weight loss is also going in the right direction, I basically just eat, walk my dogs, exercise and play poker every day. Love it

Gonna be a big grind this weekend, cant wait!
Play some Scoop on Pokerstars ES as well, fun times!

Update after a month of playing:

So I have now played regularly for a month for the first time in my life.
Never played so much poker in 30 days before, I must say I really have enjoyed it. I see at the graph further down that I have played 319 tournaments, that is probably not very much for most of you but it is insane for me Today I actually also 12 tabled for a while which was ****ing intense

Not many big cashes since last update, but quite a few min`s and some small final tables here and there.

Graph for the month, with BB`s won.
I don`t really know what other stats etc is best too look at too see how I am running or how I am doing at current stakes.
I feel like I have been pretty fortunate in some high equity spots this month and according to this graph I have run above EV in all In situations at least.

The winnings in pokertracker does not take account for bounties I see.
So the number is a bit higher.
It is 2791$ total in the green for last 4 weeks which I am very happy with!

I feel quite comfortable at the stakes I play now and will keep playing them but add some 22$ during SCOOP which can`t come fast enough

Will probably play almost the entire low schedule of SCOOP, really looking forward to that as I have not been able to play much of it earlier because of too much work.

I feel like I learn alot from just playing now but I probably do repetetive mistakes all the time which I can`t see myself
So my plan is to play through May and maybe June and then consider coaching of some kind to improve further

Had some close calls during this week like 12th in the catfish r/a on 888 and 14th in the uppercut knockout on winamax on sunday, really nasty exit hand for the chiplead with 14 left:

Came out some bad words on that river

But then I got some good run and luck on my side yesterday in this tournament:

Not really to comfy in HU, came in with a chiplead here but ****ed it up. a bit annoying because of the bounty factor, really pays to win.
But 953 euros is not bad at all, so can`t be to upset

This was the hand that switched the HU on it`s head:

SB shows Ad 6d (Full House, Aces full of Sixes)
(Pre 35%, Flop 72%, Turn 83%)

SB wins 72.63 BB

Don`t really know why I lead jam here, should probably check - call this to keep his bluffs in. He will probably shove river in this particular hand though, and I don`t think I would get away from it HU but maybe I could find a fold here? I dunno...

Bust in second shortly after when I check rejammed 17bbs with a pair and open ended straight draw into his flopped flush

All in all, quite good week until this point, will put in the grind on saturday and sunday as well. Hoping to qualify for the special edition sunday million.
I might just buy in though if I don`t manage to qualify through a sat

Getting close to overall green in my all time tournament poker "career" here.
I think I am running quite good at the moment though so it might still take some time if (when) the heat slows down
Might go bust during SCOOP as well hehe

Sunday went bad as usual, maybe it`s because the level of skill is higher on the players on sundays? Could be that. Don`t have a big samplesize though, so might just be variance as well
Qualified for the milly but it was one of those tournaments that just went by.

Today was much better though, played a different schedule today, started 13:00 local time which was a lot better for me.
Because when I went into the later stages of the tournaments I was not too tired.

Got a few good results as well, 4th in the 7,50 BB for 706$ and 3rd in the ultra KO on PS es for 441$ and a few other small final tables.
Played 28 tournaments on the day which I think is a record :P

Really a cruel exit in the 7,5 bb though:

This guy was playing like a mad man, he could literally have almost anytwo here. I could never fold , sucks with the shortstack. I think I made the right play even though there was some ICM. Also would have twice the chips of second place.

Ofcourse I won my share of flips etc along the way too the final table but
quite annoying too loose such a high equity spot against that guy

I will win one of these Bounty builders soon, I can feel it

Fantastic day though with over 1100$ in profit.

Small update, due to this second place in the deep run on winamax and some other decent scores I am for this exakt moment to be considered a winning tournament player (It might change tomorrow though , hehe)

Although with a small margin I am very proud of managing to complete my first goal in 39 days!

As I have completed this first goal I have a few new ones:

1. Get to a 10K bankroll

2. Climb to top 20 on the national ranking of Norway on Pocketfives, I am currently 34th.
