Day 96

Not only is the rain falling upon us today (thus cancelling tennis in the process ), but the mid August air is getting crisper, the evenings colder, mornings shivery, days shorter and the winter darkness creeping upon us : winter is coming folks. Fast enough anyways to turn my attention towards my winter plans, which made me reserve 5 nights in Calgary (Deepstacks Series, ME 2k, 500k guaranteed) and book my flights up until Montreal. I am not sure about the WSOPE in Czech Republic though, as I am having second thoughts about having to rush to Europe after only 4-5 days with my folks, along with having to shake off the jet lag, travel from Germany to Kings Casino and spend a week grinding... I think I will simply skip it, tbh, focus on online poker, Calgary and the Unibet Open in December in Romania, and then just travelling, writing and meditating... But in the meantime, we still have a long weekend ahead of us and a 50k challenge to crush, yo +2.4k online in 5h

A few things come to mind today... Primo, that I still have a sort of ongoing conflict in between my time spent online and live, the latter more social-friendly and fun, while the former offers a much higher hourly. Which leads us to my second contemplation today : I am a bit too immersed into poker Always thinking in terms of equity can straw away a kindred soul to the real purpose of this lifetime, like missing out on the little things, you know. When I first showed at the casino at 2pm today, the sun was simply fracking gorgeous, shining upon us with its golden warmth like it rarely does - or at least with an enticing magnitude. So of course, given such variables, my time might of been more well spent outdoors, soaking in some vitamin D and all that jazz, you know. Nonetheless, I did happen to spend some good time with some dear friends and their new 3 week old member, and that was sweet. So anyhow, while I do feel immersed in this nonstop equity equation that is the poker world, as soon as I set foot outside of the Yukon, I will be back to a more lenient schedule of a mere 20h weekly grind yo Besides, I do not miss kitchens for the fracking life of me Zilch. Nonetheless, a pretty efficient week it has been

Online Pokerz : My attention has been split with live taking more importance lately, so I should just accept to let go at that rakerace (and that desired 3rd place), as it will simply exhaust me. Still, a good week in the books, solid results, focus and volume : +2.3k in 25h and B+ game

Live Pokerz : Games are getting much better at the casino, the action is enticing and despite having to coop with omaha NL as oppose to NLHE, our winrate should skyrocket from here on - variance permitting, of course : +200$ in 29h and A- game

Studying : Hit the desired 4h of studying and which we will maintain as a standard for the rest of the challenge, yo

Health : Lost 3-4 lbs overall, played tennis and ran once this week. Looking good, looking good

In the wake of my buddy's fb post, a non-linear, irrational totally-uber-digressive-rant might follow :

Now, I do want to point out that I embrace more Buddhist philosophies, than some random "the world is empty" nihilistic views, yet the saying "everything happens for a reason", has always tilted the living shyt out of me I mean, how self-centered can you be How westernized and whitely privileged can you feel

A lot of time spent in third world countries has shun light on such sayings, and completely negated their appeal to yours truly ; spend enough time around poverty, general homelessness, desperate monetary suicides, and tell me if you will once here someone mutter that "everything happens for a reason"... Go tell the mom and her daughter that jumped off a cliff to their death because she could no longer feed her little one, that everything happens for a reason... Or that old woman, squealing her lungs out like a broken soul while crawling on the streets of Kolkata, that everything happens for a reason... Or the family of that dead young Filipina man, that got his neck yanked out of a jeepney by an electric wire... I am not stating that life lacks purpose or that we should not centre our lives around love and compassion - hells no, as love is all we got and that can transcend us -, but sayings like "life is too short" or even "if God permits" make more sense than a fracking white privileged one of "hey, if you are white, a male and living in a first world country, everything happens for a reason dude and yeah, you got here just because of hard work and no historical oppression". Do you take Irving, Hayward, Horford, some intriguing young lottery pieces and a decent supporting cast over Lowry, Derozon, Ibaka and some promising young yet unproven young guns... Given that Boston has traded next year's Brooklyn first round pick, this is who they are. And Toronto has to rely on the upcoming youngsters for their own ceiling. And how ****ing bad I have been running live But then I went on a heater, scooped a 1.7k pot , even bluffed successfully (with the appropriate blockers) on the turn in a significant size pot +1.2k live in 5h, +1.4k in 5h online

Another thing that was made crystal clear to me tonight, was how every single one of these players have an aspect of their game in which they excel (but fail to have an overall solid game). For some, it might be bluffing the right combos. Another, to X-R a desired polarized range. Another, have a decent balanced game (punctuated throughout by a ton of little leaks though...). Another, applying the right pressure at the right time. Or decent exploitative sizings. Or being unreadable, unpredictable. And so forth. The problem is, none of these regs have stopped to study the game, and their ego understates/blinds them from their own leaks, while overstating their strengths. Nonetheless, it is pretty interesting how everyone's game has evolved over the years...

Tomorrow is the 6th edition of the 475$ Bounty, a tournament in which I have finished in the top 2 on all previous occasions

- The first time we ran this tournament, there was 48 hopefuls who registered (our biggest pool for this specific tournament) in this event in which a whopping 50% would go towards the bounties Yours truly binked it, scooping in 10.5 bounties in the process

- The second edition saw us barely make it to 2 tables (11 players) ; yours truly finished second, tilt/choosing a God awful spot to commit stacks (@ 40% equity nonetheless, but failing to fold out A high on the flop while holding a gutter and 2 live cards in a 3bet pot).

- The third edition saw yours truly be hospitalized for a couple of days, plea to the doc to be released for the tournament, somehow make it through the field with little to no energy left, and make a deal 3 handed for second place money (only to lose a couple of flips).

- The fourth edition saw yours truly navigate gracefully through a field of 20 players, end up HU vs a drunken-Cajun-New-Orleans-happy-go-lucky-fellow, go in with the best of it repetitiously, only to fail to capitalize the win over and over again

- Funny how a 500$ went from being significant for yours truly, to quite small If I would grind live MTTs on a daily basis and select my buy-in, I would make it 2k.

- Nevertheless interesting how my live updates make up for a much better narrative than the higher midstakes levels I play online...

- Funny how we are now talking in terms of "back when poker was booming" at the casino

Ooooooffffff, am beat Nothing that a little meditation/season finale of GOT won't fix though

Things started off for the worst today when I got crippled not once, not twice, but thrice fracking times in the 475$ Bounty when my mandatory nut blocker bluff spots were all looked up Yet, every time I would maintain composure, refocus and recapture the chip lead within 30 minutes Until my KK ran into AA on the bubble, of course, vs the second chip leader ... Listen, I totally get how variance operates and how certain elements need to happen in order to bink a tournament, but jesus fracking murphy, do I need to lose against that guy... that guy that has seen it all, played all the games, been everywhere, knows everyone and everything in the WHOLE GODAMN WORLD I know, I know there is one of these (net losing) know-it-all fellows in every card room, but could you imagine for a second that all the rest of us would suddenly start bragging about how good our game is, how we crush life, how we are so ****ing talented and above everyone else... Not this year though, as surprisingly I got a flight from Dawson-Calgary for 320$ on Air North when the cheapest from WH-Calgary that day was 450$+ Do you live in WH?

Does your friend play poker? Good chance I know him, if he does... Not really into fishing (but I have) or hunting. I prefer stuff like hiking, canoeing, swimming, but anything that will get me into nature for an extended period of time, is good in my books But alas, I do not feel like I have spent enough time away from the grind this summer (will make up for it in the winter though ).

Month 4 in Review (Day 110)

1 month to go before putting an end to this challenge and hitting the road again, Jack

In terms of pace, we find ourselves across the 40k line (adjusted after upcoming RB), comfortably ahead, especially with a promising upcoming September

Online Pokerz : Given the general fatigue and lack of - at times - motivation, the lower volume is totally acceptable. I mean, what else can I say, the virtual felt has been a delight this summer (even if it forced me to spend more time in front of the screen and less time outdoors/at the casino ) : +9.2k in 83h and A- game

Live Pokerz : Live has been my obvious achilles heel this summer and I don't think I need to repeat for what reasons, right!?! This said, August has brought along some somewhat better action, better variance, and an increased desire to get away from the computer screen and splash chips on the felt, yo : +4.5k in 113h (just over 40$/h, which is much better) and B+ game (I still play somewhat nonchalantly...)

Health + studying : Maintained at least 2 weekly sessions of running/tennis, lost 4lbs thus far and keeping a somewhat balanced and acceptable diet Also increased the weekly studying to 4h - in the name Sauce123 -, 2h of daily meditation and a good level of sanity, one could say

The weather is actually very good, with most days being sunny. It is more of a desertic climate, with very brief - if frequent - spurts of rain. Nonetheless, because it is the land of extremes, you will get low temperatures in the morning (about 5c/40f) and highs of 30c (but usually 20-22c/70f). Also, you can never guess if a summer will bring us a ton of nearby forest fires (and thus smoke for days/weeks) or unprecedented amounts of rain, because, you know, it is the land of the extremes
Spoiler:
and climate change is a thing

Oooookkkkkkaayyyy Labor Day long-weekend, which means a ton of young folks rolling into town, 20 or so baseball teams from all over the Yukon/North-West Territories squaring off... so given the excitement level/traction in town, as soon as the cards hit the felt at 6pm, we all knew that there was going to be a ton of action that would ensue... Yet, I did not expect this Wild untamed vibes... Uncontrollable action... Numerous pots of 1-2k... Heated arguments... A general sense of unease, as if the fracking world would split itself open as we, the last remaining souls, would take a stance vs ****ing nothing +1k live in 8h, +1k online in 3h

As much as there is no other amazing place (for me) like the Yukon to grind and even though I truly appreciate our tight-nit poker community, it remains the product of an unwholesome unity... one where a ton of tension underlines the totality of its parts... Behind those smiles, that civility, lies a ton of ill intention... Negativity. Don't get me wrong, I still love to play this game for a living, but it is nights like these that make you wonder... just ****ing wonder...

Day 112

My folks wanted me to learn English early on so they sent me to an Anglophone Grade school at the age of 6, which literally caught the (much) younger version of myself by surprise, to say the least... You see, I only knew one word in English on my first day of school (either yes or no ), scrambled to not fail my first few years (only math saved me, as I was the best in that subject
Spoiler:
numbers speak for themselves yo
) and gradually made it to a particularly sunny day in grade 4...

You see, for some twisted-****ed-up reason, we shared our playground with a French school, which in Quebec's politico-environnment, is a direct invitation to war (even for kids ). So as an act of truce, an imaginary line was drawn midway through the playground : as long as no student crossed to the other side, no violence would ensue. Yet, for someone like me who studied in English but had mainly Francophone friends/lived in French outside of school hours, it was always tempting to cross the line and go say "hi" to some of my buddies on the other side. Which I did, that faithful day of grade 4...

Of course, I did not see the punch coming... Of course everything happened at a lightning-fast speed and reality only caught the corner of my right eye through the form of a direct and effective jab by the toughest Grade 6 French student... All I could think of when I unintentionally caressed the gravel, was "didn't you see that we were having a friendly conversation" and "don't you know I am French, you ****ing idiot!?! "... Nonetheless, beyond those words, I knew that I would never again cross that physical boundary...

A certain dichotomy has established itself in our game. There is us and them. On one side, the good guys ; on the other, the rallying opposition, set out to offer resistance. And given that I found myself over 500bbs effective with 2 of those villains, I couldn't care less that a natural schism had split our table : I wanted ****ing fireworks And not the St-Jean Baptiste kind, the Canada Day ones or even the fracking July Fourth crackers, I wanted a ****ing MASSIVE atomic bomb One that would make Kim Jong-un proud and fill Tronald Dump with otherwordly envy, yo One that would illuminate the skies and forever put to shame Supernovas
Spoiler:
But, alas!, 2am came rolling around and there was still no sights of earth shattering explosions

Day 113

Well, that's it for the weekend Really happy with my live game and especially how I adjusted to playing deep (was playing 400bbs-1000bbs all weekend) by widening up considerably my opening range (it was the right thing to do, given who I was playing effectively against...). I did manoeuvre well around the pitfall that can be the shortstacks (when they denied me my bluff equity post-flop). All and all, a solid live weekend : +300$ in 4h live, -500$ online in 3h

Will be grinding online for the next couple of days and have a dinner, a tennis match, a bonfire + camping before 150 poker players come rolling into town on Wednesday

Another pic of Dawson because, you know, why not

edit : example of why playing deep IP with a wider range can be a gem in this game :

I open 95 in CO and get 4 callers. SB (who I was targeting) donks out for 15$ and 3 of us see the turn on a Q108 flop. A 3 rolls up, which entices the SB to bet 15$ again ; he gets 1 caller while I make it 175$ to go
Spoiler:
