I started a journey thread a while ago and give it up almost immediately. So here we go again, for real this time. My english is not the best but f*ck it.

About me

I'm a 22 years old from Argentina, been playing poker since I was 18. I play cash 6-max, have blue/green hair and f****ing love the original Star Wars trilogy.

My origin story

A year ago I was playing NL25. One day I said "F*** university!" and moved out of my parents house to play poker full time, completely sure that by now I was going to be rich, playing NL200 and f***ing Margot Robbie in a yate.

But playing poker for a living turned out to be so much more difficult than I had imagined. Especially with all the new responsibilities of living on my own. I did almost no study, didn't review sessions, tilted a lot, played in autopilot and tired way to much. On top of that I also wasted a lot of time and energy staying up late, smoking weed, and being depressed.

This year

I realized how bad I am and started to study again. Changed bad habits. Lost interest in smoking weed / drinking. And fell in love with poker again.

I have to thank the JoeIngram1 podcast for my change of mindset. Especially the episodes with Doug Polk, Sauce and Lex. SHOUTOUT TO JOE!

This month

This month I ran bad at NL25, here's the graph:

I understand variance and that 20BI below ev is not a big deal, but it started to affect how I played. Also, after those bad sessions I really didn't want to study for other 2 hours.

The plan

I'm gonna go back to NL10, to play in easier almost stress-free games.

The plan is to play 100k hands there. Study a lot. Move up to NL16z, play 100k hands there, study a lot, move up to NL25z, study a lot, etc, study a lot, etc, study a lot, and shot Nl100z by September.

Is it possible? Probably.... Will I be able to do it? I hope so. I'll try my best.

Long term goals
  • May: NL10 - 100k hands
  • June: NL16z - 100k hands
  • July: NL25z - 100k hands
  • August: NL50z - 100k hands
  • September: shot NL100z and hope for the best

Short term goals
  • Hopefully improving my english
  • Not abandon this thread immediately
  • A two digits winrate in Nl10 would be nice, not sure if it's possible though.

About the thread
I'm gonna post weekly updates, probably on wednesdays.

Updates will include graphs, hands, thoughts and maybe a (vaguely) poker related song.

I'm starting this thread to keep me motivated. I don't want to look like an idiot in front of the whole internet.

If nobody cares it's fine. I like the idea of having a record of my journey to success/failure.

All criticism, advice, whatever is encouraged!

Thanks!

Don't get discouraged by results and stats. If you play solid poker and improve a little each day the rest will fall into place. Best of luck.

Update N°1: Day: 6 of 129

TBH I'm kinda insecure about my english, hope it's good enough.

Started strong on wednesday, playing 6-7 tables. Wednesday through friday I was enjoying the NL10 grind a lot. Waking up early, sitting in the computer with a cup of coffee, looking at the huge monitor and feeling the comfortable chair I bought from playing cards on the internet and totally loving life.

Only 10k sample, but for what is worth, NL10 feel so so so soft.

On friday afternoon, a female friend of mine came to visit me and brought a lot of lemon pie. After she left I still had a lot left. Didn't feel like cooking, so I layed down in the bed and just ate lemon pie all night, while watching a TV show. And then went to sleep late... just because I was too lazy to ear some real food. What a stupid decision.

Saturday I woke up late, feeling like ****, the house was a mess, I was hungry, tired and angry at myself. Why do I keep doing this? It's so f*cking stupid. After cleaning, cooking, eating, etc, I started playing at 4pm without any motivation at all. After two and a half hours of playing kinda bad, and running kinda bad (KK vs AA, and flopped set against a flush two times) I quit the session.

After that I made plans to have an awesome study-sunday: bought food, chose clothes, etc, etc, and setted an alarm clock to wake up at 6 am.

Just before going to sleep I got a text from a girl. It was something like this: "Hey twisterk (she said my real name) what are you doing? We could have a beer if you are free". In my mind that translates to "Hey can I go to your place and suck your dick please?".

And I said no....

Honestly, it felt kinda nitty to say no to a girl, just to wake up early and study poker.... but +EV. I also told her to come on sunday so whatever.

Sunday and monday I've been studyng and reviewing hands. I'm seeing a lot of spots where the lines I took, or my sizings are not the best. Probably because of playing on autopilot :/

This week I'm gonna focus on playing A+ game and avoiding autopilot.

        Update N°2: Day: 10 of 129

4 days since last update... TBH I've been playing kinda bad. Just clicking buttons... not a lot of motivation, not feeling great. I also took a couple days off, to study and whatever.

I'll try posting daily updates, maybe that gives me a little more motivation to grind. I'll also be playing only 4 tables, trying to punish as much fools as I can.

I really want to get to nl100z, and I'm not gonna get there by clicking buttons at nl10. So, I'm gonna man the f*ck up and take it seriously.

A friend told me the other day: "Just f***ing win." Solid advice IMO.

        Graph since the last update:

        And this hand...

BTN is a reg. I know calling a shove preflop for 137bb with KJs seems really spewy, but I was sure 150% it was a good call.

So, been playing OK-ish since the last update. Basically people just gave me their chips and I did my best to not f*ck it up

I've been playing really bad lately (but running good). Multitabling way too many tables and not taking it seriously enough.

I'm sick of playing NL10, no way in hell I'm reaching the 100k hands goal.

            Thanks man!

No idea what other languages you are talking about, but english is way easier than spanish/portuguese IMO.

Fwiw, I would say that watching youtube and listening to podcasts helped me a lot.

By the way, if I was born in an English speaking country, I wouldn't learn any other language. Sometimes friends or a relatives say to me "wouldn't you like to learn french/german?" and it blows my mind.... what's the point? I'm probably not going to Germany any time soon, and if I did I could just speak english.

Bet/folding a boat feels as gross as always, but I think it was a good fold question mark.... I don't know...

BTN was a bad player, he could be raising river with A9, maybe... but there are a lot more combos of T9/J9/TT/JJ/99/96

I really don't know.... if anyone has any comment about this I would appreciate it.

                  Salty regs, salty regs everywhere

I love when bad regs tell me how bad I am after they lose a hand, really makes my day.

The hand went something like this: he opens BTN, I 3Bet BB with JJ, he 4Bet shoves 100bb, I snap call, he shows KTo and my JJ hold

So far so good! Gonna keep playing NL16 and try to study as much as I can.

Thank you all for the nice comments!
