Poker has been a hobby of mine going all the way back to 2005 when myself and several high school friends first started putting small deposits on Stars. The poker scene was wild back then, but like many I was young and naοve, and had very little understanding of bankroll management or other basic poker concepts. For years, I had small bankrolls and mostly got by playing MTTs and Sit and Gos with buddies, but the money was always nominal.
Almost by accident, I discovered 2+2 when a disgruntled reg who I had just given a bad beat tapped the glass to let me know that I was a fish for sitting with $50 at 100nl, and I would never be anything more than a fish. Someone else at the table mentioned 2+2, and after some short googling, I was hooked. The first rule of Fight Club…
My poker history from there out consists of being a meh reg at both Full Tilt and PokerStars from 25nl-100nl until Black Friday where I was for the most part a rake back grinder (2-3bb/100). Post Black Friday, I went on to start my career, and although I have come back to poker a few times, it has usually been for a few months at a time. In 2017, I beat 10nl-50nl for 7+bb/100 over a decent sample (>75k hands) but after having my first kid, other priorities took up my time, and I haven’t played much since.
Nowadays, my time is mainly taken up with work, being a father and a husband, and taking care of things around the house. I very much enjoy being a dad, and everything that comes with it. That includes a lack of sleep, changing tons of diapers, and watching every Disney movie about 100x.
Recently, I have been watching the WSOP and Andrew Neeme’s vlogs again, and that itch, that many of you know, really took hold to sit down and open some tables. When I logged on to a few of the sites I discovered that I still had some money on them, and what started as a few nostalgia sessions has now turned into quite the heater. So here we are, ready to continue to run up this roll, or donate it back to the community, we will see.
This Challenge:
In order for this to be a real Challenge, we need to set some goals. I have always wanted to be a reg at 100nl and above, and so for the rest of 2019, that will be the primary goal. We are currently playing 10nl-50nl, and to have my primary game as 100nl and above by the end of 2019 would be quite the accomplishment.
As I have indicated with my title, I am a bit of a nit, and in order to accomplish my goal, I think it will be vital for me to open up my game. One particular issue with the sites I play on, is that due to a lack of volume, the same regs that sit at 200nl-1knl also sit at 50-100nl at times. In my experience, this makes the jump from 30nl to 50nl a lot bigger than it seems, and while playing a nittier style works well at 30nl and below, I expect that the good regs will adjust pretty easily to that style at 50nl and above.
Throughout this challenge I am sure I will post some random musings as well, as there is a lot more to life than just poker. My hope is that in some way this can provide some enjoyment, or at least some interesting discussion to those that choose to read this.
