dear PG&C

today I am pleased to announce a new challenge thread / blog.

I will start off with some goals.

One year goals :

Lose 30 lb.

Earn $10,000 playing poker and/or other online work.

Get married.

Improve at poker.

One month goals :

Lose 3 lbs.

Earn $1,000.

Keep my gf happy.

60 hours of study.

This week's goals

Lose 1 lb
New strict diet
60 hours of playing poker / other work.
15 hours of study (hand and session review).

Right now I am backed to play up to PLO $200 with 50% rakeback on a soft site. I am in a small amount of make up, maybe $240 in total depending on my rakeback payment (due to today) as well as some other accounting issues.

I've been on a decent upswing over the last few days. +400 in total playing a mix of single deck blackjack online and PLO cash, from $270 in my account to $670, so over 100% bankroll growth in 4 days or so. Pretty good volume. I was shot taking kind of aggressively, playing PLO $25 with only 10-12 buy ins, but at least now I have almost 27 buyins. I'm not sure when I will be taking shots for PLO $50.

On the 14th I played 1537 hands and on the 15th I okayed 2100 hands.

This hand was brutal :

This hand I suspect that I played incorrectly and that bet-folding or check-folding are both superior options.

Okay, so the first question is should we open this hand in the CO, and having opened should we call the three bet. Villain's stats in HM2 are 55/30 with 23.1% three bet over 66 hands. Our hand itself is not great, aside from the nut suit, and in retrospect it is probably better to just open fold, especially with such an aggressive player in the big blind. The button was a 91/2 whale which probably makes the open worse because we are never going to end up playing this hand in position. What about against the three bet?

Two conflicting concepts apply here, the first being that you don't fold to three bets in PLO, and the second being that you don't call three bets if you have an ace in your hand. The second isn't as big an issue when you are dealing with a three bet from a hyper aggressive player, in fact in this spot I would argue that having an ace is a good thing because it will provide a lot of raw power against a loose range.

whereas vs a nitty range we would much rather have the rundown :

Of course we can't forget about the drooler :

Since we are presumably getting 3:1 to see the flop I don't hate the call of the three bet, even though our absolute position is weak.

BTN: $17.10 (171 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with Ad 8c Js Ac
2 folds, BTN raises to $0.35, SB folds, Hero raises to $1.10, BTN calls $0.75

Preflop is okay, but I think calling is a reasonable option as well. We are 170 bb deep, and my opponent is a very loose aggressive player (74/46/34 VPIP, PFR, 3 bet) who can have anything. Playing OOP deep relatively faceup is going to be a nightmare.

Flop: ($2.25) Td Qs Qd (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $2, Hero calls $2

I don't hate my play. From a metagame perspective is nice to have some check/calls, although given the draws maybe this hand isn't an ideal candidate and TT, QT, or some sort of combo draw would be better. Folding might be better, depending on villain's tendencies.

Turn: ($6.25) Ks (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $4, Hero calls $4

River: ($14.25) 3d (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $10 and is all-in, Hero calls $10

Results: $34.25 pot ($1.90 rake)
Final Board: Td Qs Qd Ks 3d
