I think there are two points that you have entangled.
1. Psychological effect of keeping x buyins online is a poor reason
2. Ability to handle big downswing is seriously in question

I feel that #1 is a weak point and #2 is a legitimate point.

With #1, it's not just for psychological reasons, there are practical reasons. On any given day no matter what the result, I can never be in a position where I am not overrolled for a game. Because I have to play every day. And because if I am not overrolled, then there is some legit risk of busting my account, and it is hard/clumsy to deposit a lot at a time (maybe you need a bank wire or something, I've only ever deposited with CC.) Realistically I don't want to deposit a lot / find it hard to deposit and that's part of the reason why it is a psychological advantage for me.

With #2, I have never had a big downswing. Even playing HSMTTs in the past where I would "downswing" big, that wasn't playing on my own. Maybe jdawg is ready for a 100k downer but I honestly don't know if I am considering its 100% my money and considering it's never happened. My hope is that I win enough by then that it isn't so bad.

I think its not that much tougher wrt the stake, but I think it also requires a lot of effort to study. (Obviously the higher the stake, the tougher the game is)

I feel there are 3 separate points you made:

• Real poker allows you to win 1m w/o rb

This is the most resonating point. You are correct, but this is just the way the cookie crumbled. On Jan 1st 2012 I would have eg. played MTTs if I had more money, and cash games if I had slightly more money, but I didn't have enough to spread onto X different sites as necessary. Realistically, SNGs were the best option in terms of making money, that's why I played SNGs (which at the time I knew 0 about) rather than MTTs or Cash (which I knew way more about.) I headed down this SNG road long enough that I am sort of stuck in it. There is a cost to learning new games.

• Hyper SNGs are an inferior flavor of poker

This is just something we have to agree to disagree. If PLO is the game, I will play PLO. Or 5 card plo, or open face chinese, or poker with 1bb stacks, or whatever. I just happen to play the game I feel I can win the most at. I don't think any game is intrinsically more or less stupid than another, I think they are all pretty stupid.

• Wasting a year of your life

I agree that this goal isn't ideal, and it is a poor choice at best for things like being happy and etc. So it is in fact "wasting one's life." I don't really have a response to this point but I agree in the sense that you mean it in.

I think the likelihood of you not experiencing a 50k+ swing during this challenge is almost non-existent, and you're probably still an underdog to never have a 100k+ swing, so you should prepare for that .

Any more info on the videogame? Got a kickstarter or something?

No info on the videogame, sorry -- not really allowed to say anything on it. I intend for it to be extremely popular. The closest thing like it in terms of core gameplay is probably Sirlin's "Codex" game [but his game is intended basically only for hardcore players, and probably won't have the sort of "rounding" necessary to be a super popular game.]

I initially thought we would do a kickstarter after a meeting a long time ago. After review, I agree with the team and our inclination is that we won't do it (costs [there are many indirect ones] outweigh benefits) but that we will also review that decision in a few months.

If you are really interested in eg. being a beta tester, maybe email me [alexwice at gmail]. There will be a beta in stages (eg. stage 1 100 people, stage 2 1000 people, stage 3 10000 people.) But even stage 1 won't happen for something like 4-12 months (depends how fast other people work on it which I don't know. I wanted to say 6 months but these things are often slower than they seem they should be. Sometimes I get surprised too though.)

Maximum respect 4 u if u can pull this off! I truly believe this is humanly impossible but human limits are broken every now and then and you speak logic in every post so I will def be rooting for u. Esp since it doesn't look like there's any action on this

Haha, "phantom" was/is still actually a good idea but a 5 man team [especially with money] is much better than a 1 man show. I'm suprised you remember, that was just some random idea I had many years ago.

GL but I think this is insane and imo a bad idea, and extremely bad for both your physical and mental health. Money isn't worth that much.
