Re: From Midstakes to Midstakes -- Dunce's Average Husng and Life Blog From Exotic Locations

What %s of $1.5 and $3.5 HU HT regs own Sharky at all?

Idk, I've just scanned the $1.5 6m HT lobby and was shocked to find a running 5-reg (!!!) game (as in, with 5 multitablers) as well as (apparently) 1-reg ones. Quite a few of them don't seem to be selective. This does make sense because Sharky requires a $35 commitment, which is 23 BIs of 1.5s and 10 BIs of 3.5s.

I really don't know, but probably not many. I don't even know the sharky situation at 7s though there may be some guys using it there. 15s+ is when it's more or less expected.

---------

Anyway, did a bunch of touristing around the past few days so not all that much grinding. Have a 2 week window now with grind on the mind though so hopefully we can put in a couple nice weeks and get at least 1200-1500 games in over that time.

Here's an overall month graph

Still running pretty bad, but I'm actually very happy with some things. This graph is still a little frustrating, because I'm again running close to ev at 15s/30s vs fish and mostly worse at 60s, plus had a couple pretty disappointing sessions vs 60s regs lately. With that said, my fish game is on fire -- granted my sample this month is small, but I'm playing amazingly well vs fish most of the time, have great evroi, and my fish evroi on the year has now cracked 4% (from ~3.85% overall when I started the thread). Still a ways away from my 4.5% fish roi goal on the year, but if I can keep up this fish play I'm very confident I'll get there.

Keep in mind that I'll post more detailed results breakdowns monthly, though I'm not sure exactly how to do that or how much info I want to share. But for the incremental updates they'll just be like this, with results and ev line but no specific info by stake. Maybe by month I'll give stake splits (or 15/30 + 60 split) with an evroi% or something.

Touristing around has been a pretty good time. I did drop the ball on some goals (only ran once, but I did walk over 5km on 2 days and over 10km on 1 more, so fitness hasn't been a total bust. Missed 1 day of meditation, but have meditated daily outside of that. Japanese and the wakeup goal have been pretty hard failures, so need to step up on that front. I'll share a few Bali photos here, it's really been amazing most of the time.

Most of these are from my phone with no filter, sorry! Also shoutouts to my thumb in the first one lol.

Last one is a shot of a Balinese ceremonial...dance/chant/performance called the Kecak Fire Dance. It was a real experience, a lot of traditional Indonesian music is so profoundly different from Western music and it's super interesting to me. Was pretty cool to see live though they packed in a few too many spectators.

Anyway, that's all for now, thanks for the support so far and feel free to ask whatever. Gonna do the fuller updates 1-2 times a week but I'm around 2p2 just about everyday and am happy for all questions, comments, discussion, etc. GL at the tables all.

Iím confused. You are a professional poker player traveling the world. With the results you have posted, how are you able to afford all of this? Do you play other places besides PokerStars? How do you earn your money?

This year has been kind of depressing at the tables, but also made almost 5 figs in the last few months of 2017, had some profit cuts on stake this year (basically before dipping into ~5k mu) so pulled a few k out that way, have some profit from non hypers, and have income from coaching + managing students in the stable I'm affiliated with + private coaching.

If I hadn't gotten the gig with my stable which has ~more or less covered living expenses in SEA, I probably wouldn't have played any 60s regs this year and would have a lot more cash for sure But we're getting by somehow.

Don't 60s division regs get so little volume at 60s that they have to enter the 30s line too? So their ABI is about $50, isn't it? Then, by battling into 60s, you've been donating a lot of EV (mostly to Stars) just to increase your hourly by 1.7 times in the future that can be taken away by a trier if you remain among the weakest 60s regs.

A few even mix 15s as well. It's hard to say exactly, but I would guess abi is under $50 for most though it does depend on a few things. So if anything, the situation is even worse than you're projecting here

However, maximizing my immediate hourly simply hasn't been my concern for a long time. Realistically, if I hadn't played any 60s reg games this year and had instead spent ~75% of the time battling playing fish games, I would have somewhere around $8k more (rough estimate) on the year, but that just doesn't concern me much.

It is annoying to be downswinging there while running ok at 30s, but what can you do

Pictures hype! Keep them flowing, because there is need to be some sorta balance between dull evrois, cevs and other numbers.

Fair but I don't take many pics haha. I'll post a few more before I leave here tho.

---------

Always nice to update when you're on an upswing:

Abi the past few days is much higher than usual, have had some good chances to get some 60 and even 100 fish games with those guys not around. Very nice to hit an upswing in your higher bi games for once! Was able to pay off another chunk of mu so at this point just have $1k to go and then we'll be in the clear.

Have also won a few chips back vs the 60s div, played about 50 games since the past update. Gonna get back to battling more and try to play well -- other guys in my stable are starting to push games too and it's pretty motivating for me. It's still a long uphill climb, but feeling pretty confident in my game and some adjustments I've been implementing recently so hopefully it will continue to work out. Have 50 more games scheduled in a couple days and may play a few smaller sessions in the next few days too, so we'll see how it goes.

As for a goal update: Sleep goal has been going reasonably well, missed one day but been waking up before noon regularly so that's good. Would like to move waking up to about 10:30 really but who knows if that's gonna happen Meditation daily as well so that's nice. Did grind some Japanese for 30m or 1h the other day but still have a huge backlog, will try to review at least a couple hundred kanji tonight and stop putting it off. Fitness unfortunately totally off the rails, kinda a shame cause 2 weeks ago I was on point but...not so much since starting this thread! Really need to step that up.

Not too much else to say and no more pics for now GL at the tables all.

Re: From Midstakes to Midstakes -- Dunce's Average Husng and Life Blog From Exotic Locations

Been lazy putting together an update, but on a pretty nice upswing recently so really can't complain about anything. Here are some graphs of my month. For now I'll post some slightly more detailed graphs than usual though not showing everything.

First graph is basically all fish games, which is mostly 30s but also includes some 15s and 100s:

Extremely satisfied with my fish game this past month. I think I've made some big strides forward with my fish A-game (still need to work on B-/C-game for sure) and have a much better understanding of adjusting based on board texture etc. I really hope I can keep up this kind of winrate in the future; I think having a fish game in the 5%+ zone is a huge key to minimizing variance and making good money, especially when you're a volume fish like me.

Second graph to share is all 60s. I have no good way to separate out pure reg games, but about 330 of these are vs 60s division regs with the other 250 being vs fish. I definitely plan to start hitting 60s reg games harder in the coming couple months, and think I've also improved my reg game from where it was in my previous battles vs them. With reg games being well over half the sample and at ~0% evroi, my fish roi in the 60s graph also looks to be about 5% which I'm pretty happy with.

Still working on integrating more theory into my game, think I'm really leveling up recently and building my reg game in spots I've neglected before. Don't know exactly how much to share, but recently I've been putting in some good hours looking at stuff in flop x/x lines and I think it's really making me more confident and letting me do some cool stuff vs regs.

I've been a real chump with volume the past few days and my sleep has been pretty out of whack (thanks 1AM coaching + late night World Cup games...) so not gonna share the July graph just yet, but my upswing has continued vs the 60s division...hopefully it keeps up for a little bit and I can be looking at entry sooner rather than later! But for now...head down, keep improving, play solidly in my battles, and I'm sure I'll get there.

Will end with a couple more pics from travels just so the wall of text doesn't get too boring!

This first one is a shot of the Vietnamese countryside taken in Sapa. North Vietnam is really a breathtaking place, lots of amazing nature, hiking, and some very kind people. Haven't done it yet myself, but have heard many people say renting a bike and traveling a loop through the region is a life-changing experience..I'll definitely look to do it myself one day.

And here's a shot from a Thai temple in Bangkok! Appropriate as I'm actually headed to Thailand next week -- will be in Chiang Mai for at least a month, though the plan is probably two.

Good luck at the tables, and see you all on the other side!

Hey Dunce,what's up??
I have a few questions.
Btw the first graph looks absolutely crushing.
6.22 Evroi is pretty much excellent even at this volume.I assume it will be really hard to keep up with this EVroi, but nonetheless you seem to know what you are doing.
Now for the question.

In general do yout hink that the way you run has a big scale impact on your longterm EVroi or do you think it's just pure skill??
I mean if your Ev line is way higher than your actual winnings will have a strong impact on the longterm evroi??

Re: From Midstakes to Midstakes -- Dunce's Average Husng and Life Blog From Exotic Locations

My fish game has seemed pretty solid lately. I would be happy with 5%, though longterm I actually think the wr cap for an absolute crusher is somewhere around 7.5. There are definitely a few guys doing 6.5+ over massive sample, but for me that's a project after 60s, hopefully

I'm not really sure what you mean with your question. Long-term ev-roi is pretty tough to measure. Even vs fish there's a lot of variance in 2-3k game samples, but by the time you get to the 5 or 10k range your game will have changed some and population may be slightly different too...you're trying to measure a moving target.

That said, I've noticed that the guys really crushing fish for 6+ longterm are doing interesting exploitative things that normal regs (including myself) can tend to miss. Working with some fish crushers in my stable has been pretty eye-opening in that regard. I'm sure the way you run even over long samples tends to have some impact, but I think the driving factor over 6 months or a year of decent volume will be the quality of your play.

Re: From Midstakes to Midstakes -- Dunce's Average Husng and Life Blog From Exotic Locations

Made it to Chiang Mai -- a bit sad to leave Bali behind, but hoping to stay here for a couple months and see how things go. Poker has been pretty disappointing since arriving here and volume was super low (staying up all night packing + travel day to a new country...not a good combo). But life in Thailand is good, hopefully can push some fish volume and print at least a few k this month.

Reg games swingy as always. Had one session I was very unhappy with (legit tilted for a minute, actually) and some other sessions where I played alright, not perfect, but pretty bad distro etc. Biggest leak, as usual, is calling down too much. Oh well, poker's a trek.

Played some games vs a 200s reg today too and he exposed some weaknesses, so I have a bunch of stuff I want to work on moving forward. In general, I think exposing and exploiting your villain's weak lines is a spot where I struggle -- my theoretical + gto knowledge is pretty strong for 30s/60s, but it's tough to win when you're not exploiting your villains like you should.

Find spots to crush people and squeeze those spots fam.

GL at the tables, next update once I actually play some volume!

Interesting blog, look forward to following. Have watched a couple of your streams be good if you could get it going on a more regular basis. Couple questions, used to live in Chiang Mai myself is Zoe in yellow still up and running? also considering going to spend a couple of months in Bali or Vietnam between October and December could you recommend a good place to stay with solid internet? Nice refreshing blog. Seen you post in BQ and learnt some stuff from you along the way. I know nothing of HU and a lot of what you post went a million miles over my head, because I'm just an enthusiastic reg playing 9 man turbo sngs these days, for fun.

Poker aside, I'm doing the couch to 5K thing right now...which is kinda amusing as my marathon personal best (from 1984) is 3 hours 8 minutes.

Don't know if you are teched up, but I have fitbit, myfitnesspal and a smart body scale, all synched, so it's pretty hard to delude myself. I spend half my life in the gym...all in the quest of denying nature, who made me to be a fat ****

I have a PT as well, twice a week.

I can pass a few hours in the gym on the bike or treadmill playing sngs on my IPAD...not entirely unprofessional either as I come down to $3.50 and play hudless, so its kinda training...and fun.

anyways, good luck in all you do, I'll follow.

Yeah, dealing with some medical stuff atm but hope to be streaming more as well. Also as usual been a bit lazier than I should be I'm not much of a clubber but yea Zoe is definitely still running.

I've stayed at 4 or 5 places in Hanoi and the net was kinda ****ty and inconsistent at all of them, so I would def recommend getting a sim and using 4g which tends to be pretty alright. It's like $1/gig or even cheaper for mobile data there so unless you're trying to watch hd vids or download big files you'll be alright. Otherwise, be very careful when booking a place. I think HCMC is in general better, but have only been there for a couple weeks so don't really know.

Bali I've heard mixed things about, people say Ubud has good net but I stayed in the Seminyak area and again things were a bit spotty. Where I was staying first was actually a dead zone for my Axiata (?) sim too but Telkomsel was solid. I think with a lot of these places it's luck of the draw, but look for listings that advertise some sort of fios line imo. The villa I stayed at in Seminyak was actually amazing except for the wifi being somewhat spotty, would definitely recommend the area down near Double Six Beach/Potato Head etc etc.

Glad you've picked up some stuff from my posts over the years Husngs these days are a pretty solver-oriented game and ranges are super wide and strange compared to most non-hu variants, so no worries being a bit lost! I enjoy it a lot these days but it did take me a while to pick everything up when I came back to playing poker more seriously.

GL getting back into 5k form!

Not really teched up much, my phone has a pedometer if that counts But unfortunately been dealing with some medical stuff + on some meds that really kill my energy the past week or so, so haven't hit the gym lately. Really need to get back to it soon. Thanks for the gl wishes!

-----------

Been a while since I've updated! Not that much to report -- this month has been kind of disappointing so far, but not a disaster so can't complain too much:

Unfortunately about 250 of these are reg games at 60s and they've been a bit of a bummer, but I've reviewed a good number of them and it seems like I'm playing alright overall. Fish game roi also a bit rough this month so far (~3.5%), but we'll see how things go for the next week and a half and try to finish the month off strong. Want to up the pace a bit and make sure to get 1500 games this month.

I have picked up a couple more students for some private coaching lately and so far everyone seems pretty happy, so definitely hope to move more into that and fire off some more streams while I can! Definitely toss the twitch a follow (https://www.twitch.tv/gloves222) if you're interested, because I guarantee I'll stream at least a couple times a week going forward, probably just husng fish games but maybe some spins in the mix too.

Short update but not too much else to report, don't want to ***** too much about random medical stuff but that has my energy pretty low so hopefully can truck through the last week of treatment here (+ hopefully it's effective) and pick things up again soon.

GL at the tables guys!
