I first taught myself to play somewhere back in 2009-2010 and was after a lot of learning and practice a break even player at best. Then Black Friday happened and i kinda lost interest as other things in life took priority.

Fast forward to the beginning of 2018 and i find myself unexpectedly between jobs and looking for something to occupy my mind in between job interviews. I was fairly into the Crypto markets and started watching youtube videos from this guy id never heard of called Doug Polk, turns out he's also a poker player, who knew

I started watching his poker channel as well as videos from Spraggy, Tonkaaa and a few others and my interest in poker was renewed.

In the pre BF days I'd reached the point where i knew the basics and was aware of how much more there was still to learn if not aware of exactly what it was i didn't know yet. I managed to resurrect old accounts i had with Stars, 888 and Party and made the minimum deposit on each, a total of about $30 with the thought that i would focus on study and improving my play and that if i bust my BR I would not be redepositing.

Fairly quickly turned $10 on Stars into $50 playing 2nl full ring and decided to switch to 6max, even quicker i went back down to $20, at this point i decided that i was going to study 6max whilst grinding freeroll MTT's to build my BR up to a sensible number of buyins for 2nl. it took a few months but i managed to grind a load of tournies and had a BR of about $100 to play with, went back to 2nl 6 max cash and turned that into $150, moved up to 5nl and got up to just shy of $250 with a view to move to 10nl at $250 when disaster strikes and through a combination of bad luck and (mostly) bad play dropped a lot of buyins and ended up moving back down to 2nl with a BR of about $125, which is where i am now.

even though i haven't shown much if any real profit i have made huge improvements in my game, my understanding of ranges, standard lines, counting combos, hand equity, tilt control etc etc... is so far ahead of where i was a year ago that i laugh at just how bad and clueless i really was.

I recently signed up for the free month trial of Shark Academy with Bestpokercoaching and absolute binged almost every piece of 6max content they had making copious notes as i watched the courses and will be implementing what i have learn there into my game as we go.

I just got my hands on a new PC and have a 3 screen set up which is making multi tabling much easier than it was on my ancient laptop and am ready to take the game seriously with the goal to get out of the micros and go pro.

I aim to update this blog at least once per week but hopefully after each meaningful session, ill be posting graphs, HH's and any other thoughts i have.

As i'm on a new machine i don't have any historical graphs to post right now but even if i did they aren't anything to brag about.

Thanks for reading and welcome to my blog

Dont seem to be able to get the hand history converter to work with HH's exported from HM3 if anyone has any advice?

Played a quick 30 minutes after work just to get a graph and HH to post here

Did get into 1 fun hand against a couple of massive fish:

So villain has check/called flop and turn, his vpip/pfr is 38/27 over 26 hands and i decide to shove with bottom set thinking he might just call with AK, or any of the Ax 2 pair combos. this is 2nl and people are calling off stacks with top pair weak kicker all over the place. I've decided to set myself a goal of playing 25k hands per month, as I started this on the 12th of July that gives me a target for the month of 15.3k hands.

If I can maintain a winrate of 5bb/100 hands I will win 12.5 buyins per month, using a BR of 25 buyins means I will be able to move up a level every couple of months, so in theory 12 months or so from now I'll be taking shots at 200nl.

Easy game!

Bankroll Management:

$150 - 5nl (30 buyins)
$250 - 10nl (25 buyins)
$500 - 20nl (25 buyins)
$1,250 - 50nl (25 buyins)
$2,500 - 100nl (25 buyins)

Hands Target for July: 15,314

25k hands per month is very low volume variance gonna kill you

given that you are not crushing the stakes you can go like 100k hands breakeven you are going to lose your sanity by playing only 25k hands per month

so clearly I should have folded to the raise on the river but can I ever really do that? I've got 54% equity against his range IF he shoves with trips and 0% if he doesn't.

And a second very similar spot

All comments are very welcome, would you have played those hands differently? why?

First hand, you should be 3betting Preflop, grunch calling his 4bet, and then praying you're up against AK on the flop. As played, you have to raise flop or turn. That board is wet, our hand is underrepped, and it very likely connects with his range hard. We're close to the top of our range here, let's just shovel money in.

Second hand, iso raise slightly larger preflop. Like the turn bet. River is bad. What are we getting called by with a pot sized bet on a double paired board that we beat? Even a whale knows his flush is likely beaten on a double paired board. If you must bet, bet/fold .4 or something. But checking back is best, because a flush is very likely raising turn, so there is almost nothing to get value from.

Since my last post I've been really focused on two main areas, adjusting my river value bet sizing to get called by worse hands more often and not calling turn or river raises with second best hands myself.

I feel I have made some major improvements in my game in an area I've struggled with a lot in the past and the results speak for themselves.

This week:

Total

Hands Target for July: 15,314
Hands Played for July: 15,868

Target winrate bb/100: 5.00
Achieved winrate bb/100: 11.13

Current BR
888 - $102.08
Stars - $19.01
Party - $17.98
ACR - $10.96
Total - $150.03

Net Won: $34.30
All-in adj: $32.73

I hit my volume target for July with 5 days remaining, more than doubled the target bb/100 rate and have reached the $150.00 BR mark which means I now have 30 buyins for 5nl and it's time to move up in stakes.

Bankroll Management:

$150 - 5nl (30 buyins) - Achieved!
$250 - 10nl (25 buyins)
$500 - 20nl (25 buyins)
$1,250 - 50nl (25 buyins)
$2,500 - 100nl (25 buyins)

5nl here we come

Just watched one of those personal movies that 888 sends you each week.....

I wasn't expecting that!

so my shot at 5nl had depressingly predictable results...

I ran pretty bad but the losses are mostly down to bad play on my part.

Dropped back down to 2nl to grind it back up again which started well winning 10 buyins in the first 7-8 k hands and then i hit a 10k hand dry

spell that just felt like it would never end. ive run the numbers in HM3 and i was flopping sets 30% less often than expected, when i had flush

draw on the flop and saw both turn and river i was making the flush something like 40% below expected. i even had one session where i got it in

with 85-93% equity 7 times and lost 5 of them, just painful.

This morning i had a very interesting session, it took a few hands for me to realize but for and hour or two i had the enormous pleasure of

multi tabling against the man, the myth, the legend, the biggest losing player in the history of online poker, ladies and gentleman....

Paisting!!!!

My chart for the day..

His chart for the same session..

i have never seen anything like it, open shoving 50 hands in a row, even 72o is good enough for him to get it in pre flop.

and then he berates the person that stacked him for being a fish.

it was something to see!!! at one point there were 3 of us sitting at a table with him with 500-700bb stacks and it all came from him.

so this makes my total results for 2nl:

and my total results for both 2nl and 5nl:

Now, thanks to cashing in a few dollars of reward tokens and taking a 1st and 2nd place in $5 Blasts that i won tickets to playing the freerolls my bank roll stands at:

Current BR
888 - $77.12
Stars - $19.01
Party - $17.98
ACR - $10.96
Total - $125.05

As i have 25 buyins for 5nl i've decided to take another shot, if i lose 5 buyins ill drop back to 2nl and grind it back up again

ive spent a bunch of time studying turn and river play in different spots versus different types of villains, found a couple of leaks in my game that im working on, i definitely been making better decisions in a lot of spots and winning money where i wasnt in the past.

im planning to take another shot at 5nl this afternoon, ill be 4 tabling and hopefully record the session and stick it on youtube

shot number 2 at 5nl doesn't go particularly well but.... i dont think i played too badly and definitely avoiding losing stacks a number of times where i probably would have a month or so ago..

If anyone's interested here's a video of the session

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY6saB5rA7E

I'll be continuing this evening and hopefully get another session recorded.

any comments are very welcome
