Re: living out of my car in los angeles....

Results 2/15: -$570

I played 5/5 yesterday, the 5/T was short when I sat there and looked miserable so I just played 5/5 for a couple of hours. Lost a stack versus a bad player overpair vs set. And in my last orbit I got AA twice in 3 hands and no action. Lame. **** poker.

I like to think of it as a "gender neutral haircut".

That’s not how it works, especially in LA. To get a lease out here they do a full credit check and you need proof of employment. Not sure what backwoods area you live in where you can just show up with a duffle of cash and say “6 months rent, we good?” Also not sure how that situation and potentially getting kicked out in 6 months is preferable to just living in the van.

Re: living out of my car in los angeles....

My landlord did credit check (800+), criminal check (clean) , income check (over 6x monthly rent) and still wanted a bank statement showing reserves. Landlords, at least at decent places, are very thorough in SoCal.

These are good points, Rich have you considered negotiating with somebody on craigslist? The site often has that connotation of being sketchy, but I've had a lot of success doing transactions and finding rentals on there.

Right if you paid most of your rent up front yea no way they would accept you. Who wants their money paid in advance? That's absurd.

Re: living out of my car in los angeles....

lol @ 6 months in a van being better than 6 months in a building. Any amount of time not living in a van is preferable by an non backwards human being. If you can buy a house with cash why do you think you couldn't rent with just cash. If you prove you have plenty of funds why do you think they would give a **** if you have a job?

rick is right about this. every slum in la/san diego/san francisco gets 20+ applicants, minimum. I've had multiple places turn down 6-12 months rent upfront with W2's and bank statements to go with it because they said they prefer people with "stable employment"

yep, I was told something similar.

I my past 2 places I had to put 4 months advance down PLUS get a co-signer.

Even if you can put down 6 months in advance, those "type of people" generally are more likely to cause damage to a property, will be harder to sue, and also if you put that much down up front its harder for them to evict you if something is an issue.
To us it seems illogical they'd turn it down, but it's actually not that ideal for them.

Sure I agree stable employment would be ideal and chosen first, but not every where is as highly populated as LA so if you think there aren't areas where you could pull this off then lol.

Pay 6months upfront at a place no one with stable employment wants to live? So you want me to move to some depressed area of the country? The eviction process is difficult in California and there are squatter's rights, so pretty much no place in California is going to rent to someone without employment.

Thanks for the tip though I appreciate it. I've looked into different avenues of renting before. Sleeping in the back of my van ain't that bad though. Right now I'm at my grandma's house, catsitting, and smoking volcano bags and playing computer games. Lazy af.

Re: living out of my car in los angeles....

landlords main goals are to keep away drug dealers which is why they dont care if you offer 6 or 12 months rent in advance. drug dealers generally have a lot of cash, but they will not do well on background checks or credit checks and they generally don't maintain regular employment.

Re: living out of my car in los angeles....

rick is right, no one will rent to someone without credit or proof of income. and when u lived about 50 years without having a credit card (only a bank debit card) and no stable address, its impossible to ever get the first card. remember my bank denied me for a $300 secured credit card designed for newbies and i had over 20k in the account at the time. plus the account was opened in 2003 and has never been overdrawn the lady at the desk was more shocked than me it came back denied. why do u think i lived out of extended stay america all the time, which costs about double the cost of a safe apt per month in most cities? u can also get places on airbnb which u can get without anyone else staying there but u, but then again, the cost is much higher than it is for those who share rooms with strangers. if anyone does know of the name, or address of an apt complex thats both safe and accepts a years rent upfront from a poker player, they should start a thread listing these locations and cities.

the high limit ones can always find a private owner or a person willing to violate the rules of the complex for a tip of $2000 or so. the lower limit ones grinding out $1-2 NL $1-3 NL and $1-2 PLO for 35-50k per year live with their friends who grind poker also or in some pretty sketchy places.

and some avoid this problem because at some point in their past, they had a job, received a credit card, and made sure their credit always remained in good standing, so they can still pass a credit check. and they lie and claim they have a job they dont have. theyre not like some whove never worked in the last 25 years and never did nothing their whole life but play poker.

Create an account on Credit Karma. It's free. They will show you all kinds of credit cards and your odds of being able to get them or not. Plus you can get free credit reports at any time.

Capital One secured credit card is a good option. I got approved for one about 5 years ago when my credit score was pretty bad.

Not sure how stringent the requirements are nowadays (pretty sure I didn’t even need to prove I was in school) but I was able to be accepted for a student credit card through Discover back when I had no credit and was going to university. Paltry $300 limit to start but it’s something.
