Welcome to my first ever motivation thread!

Back in 2014 I already had an idea in mind to start a thread in poker goals and challenges. But I never did it. This year I think I have quite some interesting content to share with you guys.

I'm a 27 y/o poker player from the Netherlands, I play midstakes cashgames on plenty of different sites. I play some HU and live too.

I made a recap of the past few years which I'm going to share with you they're not 100% accurate because I had to think back of them in the past few weeks.. But it's just so you guys know a little bit more about me

2014 RECAP:

the first year of really being a pro was good for me, leaving university was a tough decision but a decision I so far have never regret. Turning pro was a dream for me for a long time; going for ultimate freedom and make a living by doing what I already loved for so many years (I know blabla cliché chliché).

I was already playing poker semi-seriously since 2007 but had my ups and downs doing it, mostly it was my immature behaviour spewing money away and buying stupid stuff from short term profit, I could never build a roll like this, so I knew I wasn’t ready to be a professional yet by that time, although I always have kept in mind I got talent for this game, even though 90% of the people around me were negative/sceptical about it. After trying multiple university studies and working and found out it didn’t work out for me. In late 2013 I finally made the definite step towards poker.

I've had the opportunity in 2014 (the first year I was completely free to do anything I wanted to) to visit a good friend and poker player in Cape Town, South Africa, traveling had already become another passion of me, which was perfectly fine to combine with poker ofcourse, so I said YES! It was such a beautiful experience, he lived in a nice mansion with a beautiful sea view where I could stay for a few weeks. Also I've traveled the eastcoast of SA all by myself for a month, I went from Port Elizabeth to Durban, a trip with so much beautiful untouched nature and wild animals I’d recommend anyone to go there.

In the summer of 2014 Budapest was a good option for me because of the nice weather/good prices and I had heard people being very enthusiastic about the pokercommunity in the city too, I've mixed living by myself and having 1 pokerfriend over at my place. Lived in the centre of Budapest in a nice appartment and played a ton of poker too. A couple of guys I knew from Capetown also came to Budapest to live there and I met a lot of new people, a lot of new inspiring people which I'd still call friends and have contact with now, just like a lot of my friends from Capetown, I’m very grateful for that.

In the summer of 2014 me and my girlfriend got together and it’s still going really well, she supports me 100% in what I do and she’s such a great person for me.

2015 RECAP:

January: I lived with my mum since the end of 2014, in a small town near Amsterdam. Being taken care of is not bad if you’re a poker player but I was looking for a place for myself again. Pokerwise I started 2015 really good with a nice upswing @ zoom500 and decided to add NL1k in my games too.

February: I could rent a room in Amsterdam at 3 friends of mine for 2 months, I knew it wasn’t going to be good for my game, but I decided to give it a try, my volume dropped from 40k to 30k~ hands mostly due to drinking and sleeping longer on average. My evbb/100 still was around 4.5 which I was perfectly fine with

March: I still lived with my friends in A’dam, the room was small and in the basement of the building, I also played there, which made me look like a vampire, the lack of sunlight wasn’t good for me and I just played 25k hands this month, evbb/100 dropped to 3.5 this month

April: I decided to rent my mums appartment, she moved to another small town nearby so I just took her place since it was pretty nice, ofcourse I wanted to live in Amsterdam or Haarlem rather than a small town, but it was good for now. For some reason I don’t remember anymore I just played 20k hands this month. I was breakeven.

May: I try to get back into grinding like the beginning of the year, feeling better than ever with my game, too bad I’m running really bad @ zoom500, but my evbb/100 is 7 this month

June: the second best month of my career, (the very best being in 2010) put in a solid 40k hands (I know for some of you guys this is nothing) winning 9.5 evbb/100. obv having a huge upswing It’s becoming summer in the Netherlands.

July: a lack of volume this month, just 20k hands, this is mostly because I’m in Amsterdam alot. Partying. Also I was on vacation to Greece with my GF which was amazing. played breakeven.

August: this was where the luck started to turn against me, my trip to Vegas dissappointed me abit, I’m already not a fan of those crowded places, but the games were boring for me too, the timing was bad, just after the WSOP. I didn’t enjoy the food. Ofcourse I had good times with my friend partying and gambling! But this is fun for 1 week max, and I was there for 1 month, I decided to play 10-20 and didn’t do well unfortunately. Also because I was drinking too much during this trip I wasn’t able to play my A-game nearly ever.

Good thing I shipped some online tournament just because I was bored in my hotel room for 4500$ which made up for some of my losses. I didn’t play much online poker this month apart from some hands on my laptop.

September-November: this is one black period for me, for some reason I took home the mindset from Vegas, couldn’t win anymore and tilted alot, had my 2 only losing months of the year running a ton under ev on the higher stakes, volume wasn’t really good too, with 20k, 40k and 20k hands.

If I look back at it now I think I was really spoiled by how good the beginning of the year was for me and it was just silly to complain. I should just focus on my volume and my game and not complain if I can’t win for 100k hands or so, this is perfectly normal.

December: after 10 days of hardly any playing I realise that something needs to be done I’m going for supernova on stars (blush blush) Working hard again makes me feel good, just playing 200z which is very beatable, and I made the target pretty easy, christmas and NYE with my family and girlfriend in Rome was really nice. I’m feeling motivated for 2016!

This is the graph of 2015, could be better, could be worse
Total evbb/100 was 3.3. played another ~40k hands on my laptop which I won 5evbb/100

2016

No money goals (this didnt work for me last year, I got greedy) Just volumegoals, focussing on getting better, staying sharp mentally and sustaining a high as possible ev bb/100. Graphs will be in bb/100 too. Will only post graph twice a month since it does have impact on my game if I keep looking at my results!

I will be in Playa del Carmen for the first few months with 2 pokerfriends, studying, partying, going on trips and playing a lot of poker!

picture is from google but this spot is ~200m from our appartment I really like it here so far.

GOALS:

Volume: 500k hands in 2016, if I won’t make this because I’m playing live or HU, this is fine. But if it’s because I play videogames and watch TV then it’s not

Get into HU: start battling regs at 2-4 and bumhunt up to 5-10 potentially, not really a goal, more a note to myself to really start doing this more.

Find a good livegame in the Netherlands: and become a regular for at least 1x a week on average. A 5-10 game somewhere would be nice or a really deep midstakes game is also fine.

Learning strong fundamentals: I’m already studying now, trying to become less easy to exploit, I’m going to study a lot on it, maybe I will add a time goal for this one.

Play more in weekends: I really enjoy being with my non-poker friends, they are really important for me and I want to keep hanging out with them. Which is sometimes hard when you’re playing poker for a living, since they’re all working people we can only hangout during the weekends, which is obv the best time to play poker too.

We play football on Sundays, on Saturdays we mostly play videogames and drink beers. And on fridays we party too. I’m going to cut drinking with my friends in weekends from 2 nights to 1, so I can play poker more and have less hangovers too .

Gonna share as much as I can with you guys. Sometimes post some pictures too. Hope it will be interesting to follow!

Subbed! GL with your goals!

Funny story: once saw a photo on FB with your Full Tilt screenname and recognised the name from the Pokernews.nl forum or something I think. When I saw this thread I looked you up on Facebook to see if I remembered correctly and found out your girlfriend is an old high school classmate of mine. Small world.

Don't worry, I'm not a stalker. Yet.

Time for an update! A lot has happened the past few days. We’re now in playa for about 2,5 weeks and I’ve met a lot of grinders that live here. Most of them play tournaments or hypers/spins, but I’ve also met some midstakes cash grinders like me. One of my roommates has recently moved up from NL200 and is already taking shots on NL2k battling some of the best regulars 3 or 4handed, he really motivates me to push myself to take shots again, I got used to staying in my comfortzone way to much, now I really believe shottaking is a good thing if you can control yourself .

Unfortunately I’m kind of capped to play on the safer software sites, this is because our internet disconnects a couple times per day, mostly it comes back after 10 to 30 seconds, but for some sites this means you just folded your hand… So it’s gonna be pokerstars mostly in the coming months when I’m still here.

Party:
We went out a couple times, on Saturday for example we were drinking with some old friends I knew from Budapest and new guys, we went for some drinks at a local bar and then went to la Santanera, which was a lot of fun. The DJ played some classic techno tunes which I had not heard for a while! (the first track of this mix for example)

Poker:
Of course there was also poker, I had not played a single hand until the 10th of this month, this is because I had to move my stuff in the Netherlands, went to Rome with my gf and because I was sick twice, a cold and food poisoning and also because of the long 12 hour flight from A’dam to Cancun. So there was work to do I finally feel I’m a bit settled and was ready to kick in some hands! So far this month my evbb/100 is 7.4 which is above expectations I'll post my graph the end of the month

Funny hands:
hand 1 was a clear -EV spot vs a fish, I had a really strong feeling he was full of ****, his riv checkraise was extremely high and I just shoved back on him, he timed down and I guess after bluffing he thought it was actually a fine hand to call with

hand 2 and 3 were some really loose calls.

        Trips:
We’re planning on going to a lot of nice places nearby, the plan is to rent a car and visit the following marked places:

In Akumal you can snorkle with turtles, Tulum has really beautiful beaches and good parties, we’ll be visiting the national park. Cobá has really impressive archeological sites from the old Maya culture, nearby Chinoté there is a massive underwater cave and if we still have time we’ll be going all the way to the southern point to visit Punta Allen beaches and nature.

We'll be staying in Tulum for a few nights and come back on time for the weekend grind again. I'll post some photo's of the trip when I'm back

        Spanish lessons:
One of my goals was to learn Spanish, I did decent. put in about 30 minutes per day on average, skipping some days. hopefully I’ll make it to 40/50% fluent before the end of this trip not sure if that’s doable but we’ll see!

        Gaming:
Before I went to Mexico I was playing quite a bit of Counter-Strike: GO. The internet here is way too bad to play CS competitively, so I’ve bought some games on steam while there was winter sale. I’m having a ton of fun with South Park: the stick of truth. If you like South Park only a little bit, this is a game I’d recommend for sure, the producers really put their effort into making it feel like you’re into the TV show, you play a new kid that comes to south park to live there, and you’re already Cartman’s bitch from the beginning, doing everything he says I just started playing and I’m a lvl 3 thief. (it’s an RPG game) I got it for ~7$ on steam.

That’s it for now, hope you guys enjoy reading it

I don't feel entitled to say anything about the hands strategy wise, so I'll leave it at nh's wp.

And I assume you gotta make it to lvl 3 fiddy in the SP game?

        UPDATE!

        January is over,

        the positive things of January:
I think I played my A-game 80% of time in January which is good enough.
Made an ev-bb/100 of 6.3 which I'm happy with.
Got on a really nice trip with my 2 roommates (more about this later)

        the negative things of January
I tilted twice, and quit not quite soon enough.
I checked my results way too often.
I played not enough volume (28k hands), mostly because I was ill/moving my stuff and on this trip.

        shortterm goals for February
Don't check my results, only on the 15th/last day of the month.
Focus more on studying less on playing.
        Still play around 30k hands.
Finally play some tennis against a few poker players if you're in playa, send me a message!

        Some big hands

hand 1: A really loose 3bet preflop, I was slightly tilting. the cold4better is a fish and I hit a miracle.

hand 3: Wasn't sure about the river again, I'm sure most regulars underbluff in this spot and maybe even checkback AK. I had to call this but it felt really ugly.

                My graph of January

I'm happy with playing my A-game mostly and winning 6.4evbb/100, ran some below EV but that's fine, you can't control that.

                The roadtrip
We decided to rent a car on tuesday, and do the roadtrip I showed in the last post

                (Repost)

We went to akumal first Day and saw turtles and other animals. We visited the mayan ruïnes of Tulum and stayed in quintana roots hostel which was really nice. We went partying for 2 nights and we got invited by People to have an afterparty at their place. Tulums beaches were the best Ive seen so far in Mexico. The vibe of Tulum was really laidback, it reminded me a bit of Pai in Thailand.

On thursday we went to Coba which was a bit inland. After an hour drive with only green around you. There was a small town in the jungle. We bought tickets to climb the highest mayan piramid of Mexico, it was build to be closer to the sun, and to sacrafice to the gods. Its 124 steps high and on top you could enjoy the view of the jungle all around you. After that we went swimming in an underwater cave and before it was dark we drove more inland to Valladolid. Which is a small city next to one of the 7 world wonders Chitzen Itza. The hostel we stayed in was really good, Candelaria had a nice garden and Valladolid was the closest we have been to a real Mexican city, because Tulum and Playa are pretty touristy.

The last Day we went to the San Lorenzo cinote with a zipline. My roommate Iason jumped down from insanely high (like 25 metres) and didnt get air for some time after he landed a bit sketchy.

We had to skip Punta allen because we ran out of time.

We're going on a few other trips, we want to go to Belize and Cuba, and visit some other places in Mexico too. There is a chance more poker players are going to join our next trip

                Having lunch in Tulum

Strange pink wall with a nice pink sky on the background (Tulum)

The highest Mayan piramid, 124 steps in Coba, view was amazing up there.

Oops, not allowed to bike here (that's me )

                UPDATE!

                Last week has been quiet,

                Poker
most of the week I've been studying, studying and studying a little bit more with my housemates, it's going really well. I feel like I'm improving really fast and gain confidence to play higher stakes again. I decided to play 500zoom, I want to get into the higher games and go out of my comfortzone that 200zoom offers, I also mixed in some 5-10 regular tables which are more juicy than 500zoom on average. It's gonna take some time to get used to 5k$ swings in sessions, but that's fine. I can always move down to 200z and 400 regular again or play with a stoploss of a few buyins.

a few hands just for fun, I forgot how to post hh's so I decided to do it with another site, hope it works :

                http://www.poker-academie.com/poker/...p=80559fe4&s=6

Hand1: I wasn't playing my Agame here, it was a straightforwardfacedupsupernitty player and I'm pretty sure he's not bluffing nearly enough here, it's either QQ or AA..

Hand2: I knew it was a bad river, but what can you do

Hand3: nice call to this crazy player his overbet

Hand4: a very sick bluff by this very good player, his range was mostly Ac or 88's, so sick he decides to turn his set into a bluff, I almost folded!

                Our next trip!

Sunday we will head off to Bacalar with our housemates and 1 or 2 other pokerplayers we've met here, they're both from Sweden, Bacalar is a small hippy village with a lagoon called the lagoon of 7 colours:

We're planning to stay there for 1 night, and then head of to Belize, I've found some good places in Belize, apparently the islands are the best, so we need to take a boat/plane and go there if we want the best places, we can also stay inlands but then it's best to drive southwards more. We'll see what happens we have only 5 days so planning is needed for sure. Something that pokerplayers are not the greatest at

3 of the best options now are:

                Sartaneja
"Located on the Shipstern Peninsula in the Corozal District, Sarteneja is a quaint and picturesque Mestizo and Creole community that sits on a unique and tropical bay setting at the North Eastern Sea point of Belize.

Two of the town's main industries are lobster fishing and pineapple farming however in recent years tourism has increasingly become significant as a source of income.

The Shipstern Wildlife Reserve is one of the top attractions in the area and is comprised of 31 square miles of tropical forest. The reserve is owned and operated by a non governmental organization and is habitat to a wide array of flora and fauna."

                Ambergris Caye:
"The largest of Belize’s several hundred islands, Ambergris Caye is a dreamy, tropical place where shorts and flip-flops are the dress code, golf carts are the mode of transportation, and lazing away on sandy white beaches is the primary activity. A short plane flight or ferry ride from Belize City, Ambergris Caye is one of the best places to visit in Belize because it presents the ultimate Caribbean getaway with classic beaches, world-class accommodations, fabulous dining and ultra relaxation."

                This looks unreal

                Caye Caulker:
"Caye Caulker may not offer the beautiful beaches of Ambergris Caye, but it’s casual atmosphere, cheap prices and abundance of bars and restaurants draw numbers of backpackers and tourists who are looking for a break from traveling around Central America. A small island accessed by small plane or water taxi from Belize City, Caye Caulker is not a place for sightseeing, but rather, a place to simply hang out and relax. The most popular activities on Caye Caulker are diving and snorkeling. The island’s closeness to Belize Barrier Reef (2th largest barrier reef of the world) offers some of the best diving spots in the Caribbean."

The famous bar: the Lazy Lizard

I'm looking forward visiting some of these places and then return back to playa for the weekendgrind again!

                Videogames
It's sale on Steam and I'm having a rough time, I'm browsing all games and searching youtube for reviews, if these games are like 5$ and have good reviews I basicly always buy them and rarely play them more than a few hours a very weird hobby of mine. But hey, at least not too expensive of a hobby !

This is my shopping cart atm, and there is still a few days to go

a big shoutout to mashxx a forum member here on 2p2 that sent me Rayman Origins for free. Thank you sir!

                Sports
I finally played tennis and football this week, I won both tennis matches but we lost football to 5 mexican kids with 3-1, I couldn't breathe after playing for 30 mins, I really have to get into shape before football season in Holland starts again

                TV series
finished Fargo season 2, awesome series! I'd rate 8/10, liked the first season slightly more, but they're both good!

Next update I'll post my mid month graph and show photo's from our trip.
