Yesterday was a mixed bag. Oklahoma State laid an egg early, which would have put a bad taste in my mouth if it wasn't wholly unexpected, but this team just isn't very good this year. I put in a decent amount of volume that I am not too unhappy with. Once again I found myself in the final 40 in the Daily $500 bonanza but ended up out in 32nd or so. Back to back days in the top 40, but you really have to ship the thing to make any kind of score. Looking to log at least 3 hours today.

Week 41:
[4/7] Meditate for a minimum of 5 minutes each day
[3/7] Exercise a minimum of 4 days each week. (minimum of 25 minute workout)
[7/7] Feed the wolf of love, starve the wolf of hate
[2:45 hours] 600 hours of live poker 149:15
[21:30 hours] 400 hours of online poker 593:00
[4/7, 0/3] No more than 3 alcoholic drinks in a day.

This past week started off strong, 3/3 on meditation, workout, and temperance. Then we hit the skids. Used a comped room at the Riverspirit on Thursday night, were I played a measly amount of hours, which also led to my misanthropic view of live play. I had a few too many pops on the Thursday night mentioned, then followed that drinking effort up on both Friday and Saturday night for some reason. The one area that I was able to reach my goal from the outset of my week (other than the 1 live session I set), was 20 hours of online play. For the 3rd week in a row, I will maintain the week specific goal set that I have, and push hard to try and meet each goal.

I continued to run pretty trashy when shot taking 10nl. AA<AKo, when villain flats my 4b in the sb which left them ~$5 behind. The flop comes something like 2x58 and villain x to me, I bet $3, and villain tank shoves and proceeds to runout for the flush. Few hands later I flop top set w/ AA, and the board runs out a 4 liner to a straight and I lose to J9o defending in the BB. I only lost a turn bet and river bet on the latter AA hand. This hand happened a little bit later in the 10nl session:

Hero , $14.75, utg, QQ
V1, $9.85, button, just sat down at the table, but I have a note on them that say "bluff shoved a 3 diamond board ott w/ KJ hi"

Hero raises to .35, V1 calls, all others fold.
pot: .85
flop: 66J

Hero bets .65, V1 calls.
pot: 2.15
turn: A

Hero bets 1.15, and v1 raises to 5.60. This bet seems way too large, and I am not sure why an A would bet this big. I guess that there are plenty of 6's in a player's range like his, but that is balanced out, in my mind, by the fd's and looser play that this opponent is capable of. I stick this rest of my money in and thinks for a bit and put's in their last 3.25 w/

Yesterday was another losing day. In a couple of instances I flopped top two, and in both cases I got ran down. One come from behind came in the form of a better top two coming in on the river, and the other was a four liner to a straight running out. No big deal really, just have to keep showing up. From a cursory perspective, I would say that my play hasn't been as stellar as it could be, but there have also been several cooler situations and instances of runbad to account for the bulk of my loses over the past week. The plan is to post up 3 hours today.

I really wish that I could stick to my goals more closely, or that I could expend the same amount of energy that I could once conjure in an effort to impress. Now I have only fleeting moments of that bygone, prolonged, energy reservoir. At present time, the truth is that I just don't care what others think. Well, that's not completely true. More accurately put, the duration with which I care is ever the more fleeting. My give a **** level is perhaps best described as a desultory state of affairs. This certainly doesn't make others wrong or weird, but rather myself, as I don't agree on much of the cutthroat collective reality that our societal times have wrought. I am sure that my next burst of motivation is burgeoning right around the completion of today's sunrise, but I also know that it won't last, and I do not have the ability to feed and sustain it.

Since I am up earlier than my norm, I believe that I will set a goal of 5 hours of play today.

I fell just short of my 5 hour goal yesterday, due to an obligation to cut the grass at my sister's house. Actually, the lawn work didn't wholly keep me from getting to 5 hours of play, but it was 2-3 hours of the day that I hadn't accounted for, and I played what felt like an adequate amount for the day and wrapped things up.

I am glad that the NBA season is here. Although, I expect a rockier season for the OKC Thunder than I have heard many pundits expressing. Regardless of the level of success for the Thunder, I still enjoy watching NBA basketball.

After watching teams like GSW, Jazz, Celtics, Raptors, and a host of others, OKC has a long way to go. OKC isn't even in the same realm as those teams mentioned. However, when you have constructed a roster that predicated on Russel Westbrook and Andre Roberson, and they aren't there, you're going to look disjointed. At least that is what I am hanging my hopes on for this season.

I have been running like **** all in these daily tournaments I have been playing. In the daily hundo, I am out in the 2nd orbit when I raise 88 in ep pf, get 4 callers, and shove 2100 into a 750 pot otf of 456ss at the hands of the button who calls w/ QJo(no spade). There was just a short continuation of that sort of run in the 1 hour of cash I played after the tourney bustout and I didn't feel like playing anymore for the day.

Any play that I get in today will be welcomed as I have some plans. The major goal is to still squeeze in some meditation and a workout. Those two are more primary of a focus than online play, but I still think that a couple hours of play should be feasible.

I am always curious about how the OKC Westbrook/George tandem pans out... The problem with OKC, is even if I believe them to be a solid tier 2 team and top 5-6 in the West (arguably top 4, if all cylinders are running right...), they are so think that if they lose one of their top 5 players (Adams, Robertson, Grant and their 2 stars), they are not the same team/become a lower tier team, imho. How is Noel panning out thus far?

^Dubnjoy,

Right now OKC has the feel of a that has a floor that is as low as almost any team in the league, and a ceiling that isn't as high as the elite teams like the GSW, Celts, Rockets, and maybe a couple of others (your Raps?). Year after year, well, at least the last two since Durant has been gone, OKC lacks a pure 3 point bomber, not from a lack of trying to field one though. We just have too many streaky 3 point shooters and a lack of identity on offense, which gets exacerbated when Westbrook is out.

I have been thrilled with the energy and focus that Noel has brought to the floor when he subs Adams. Noel will be a great backup option for Adams if the coaching staff can prolong his current level of focus and energy over the season, but this has been a challenge at each of his NBA stops as far as I know. The Adams backup spot has been a weakness over the past couple of seasons after Kanter went away imo.

I hit my primary area's of meditation and exercise. Spent a nice day with my family. I played terribly for an hour and a half. I am going to hit the weekly $5k, the evening $500, and the daily hundo tournaments today. There will also be a bit of cash mixed in there. the plan calls for 4 hours today. Also, let's get that first Thunder win this evening!

I was nearly able to meet each goal that I set for the week. Actually have had the same week specific goals for the past 3 or 4 weeks. I fell short in not getting to the casino for a live session, and I missed one day of keeping my alcohol intake to 3 drinks max. I am very pleased that I was able to meditate every day of this past week. I am also very pleased that I put in some exercise on 6 of the days of this past week. The one day that I didn't have an exercise routine, I put in well over 10k steps aided by some lawn mowing. I am not going to set any specific goals this week beyond what I have laid out for what needs chipping away on the year. I am taking two days off from poker as I have been running as bad as I can remember and I don't like the headspace that it is putting me in. I'm not really playing best as a result either. A couple of days off from poker will hopefully get me refocused.

This week I am going to start out with meditation, exercise, and 3 straight days of no alcohol. I am going to play at least one live session of poker, and I am going to post 20 hours of online play.

The week got off on the right foot with a 15 minute mediation, a nice chest/triceps workout, and a completely sober evening. In the online poker arena, 1 hour was all that I really felt like playing, and I would have liked for that number to have been 3 or more. Today I am going to follow suit with a mediation, exercise(leg day), sobriety, and hopefully 4 hours of online play. There will be some interruptions in play for the evening for trick-or-treaters looking for candy, so I will have a 2 hour window squirreled away to accommodate that.

My primary focus with this past week was to complete 3 days with no alcohol. I was able to plow through Monday-Wednesday with no alcohol, without much of a problem. I followed up on Thursday with just barely going over 3 drinks, by a half. While I was able to meet my primary goal of 3 no alcohol days, I would have liked to post the rest of the week with no days over 3 alcoholic drinks. This is a start of sorts in this area, with much room left to go.

Near the beginning of the week I had an email telling me that I had some tournament coupons on ACR. So I log into ACR and discover that I have 9 tournament tickets (4-$2.20 and 5-$5.50), just randomly in my possession. So far, I have bubbled a 9-man $5.50 SNG, picked up $12 for a moderate run in a $2.20 on-demand tournament, and $46 for a 3rd place finish in a $2.20 tournament. As is probably obvious, most of my online play for the past was on ACR. I have a few more tournament tickets to burn through on ACR, and suddenly ~$60 to play around with.

Meditation and exercise were pretty meh for the week, and I will look to bounce back this week with a better sustained effort that lasts throughout the week and doesn't arrest around Friday.

I am not going to set specific goals for the week, as this week may have some time requirements. So, I am going to submit myself to the year long goal whittling as much as possible.

What a week of mediocre progress. Actually, there wasn't a great deal progress made. I hit the minimum on workouts for the week. I practiced meditation far fewer times than desired. I didn't play any live poker, and I played virtually no hours online. My alcohol consumption wasn't really out of hand at all, but it wasn't completely in check either.

My interest in playing poker seems evident with the volume that I posted in week 45. This is kind of where I am at with my poker mindset at the moment. I haven't been on some crazy downswing, or on the wrong end of a string of suck outs or the like. I just haven't been interested in playing poker. I don't see much changing this week either. However, I am going to increase my progress from week 45.

I started the week off on a strong streak of practicing meditation and exercise, yet I once again trailed off in my efforts. A prolonged effort to maintain my routine is going to be the focus of this week. I played in a local tourney series $180 buy-in on Wednesday night, and used one of my two comped hotel stays for the month so that I would be able to be in town for the restart the following day if needed. I didn't make the day 2 restart, and aside from taking down a pot with 77 on an all under card board and making a river call with A high and being good, we never saw another pot come our way. I busted w/ AK after shoving aipf for ~14bb and not getting there v. 99. I went back to the casino where I was staying the night and played another hour and just couldn't take the inane poker environment anymore and racked up with +$60 night.

As for the routine maintenance focus for this week. The goals will be as follows:
7 days of meditation
6 days of exercise
5 (1 session) of live poker
15 hours of online poker
0 days exceeding 3 alcoholic beverages

If I am able to meet the above goals for the week, I will feel like I am starting to get back on the right track. While my weekly goals appear modest, the effort to reach them feel as though they will be herculean as I sit here typing this out. I will feel really positive about things if I am able to get back on track with the above goals. Time to dig in.

As an aside, 3 new brews that I have sent down the hatch of late:

Marshall Brewing Company, This Land Lager
Apart from the easy drinking body, and robust yet smooth flavor of this beer, I love the regional flare in the design of this can:

Prairie Artisan Ales, ERA
This beer has many similarities to other Prairie Artisan Ale beer's that I have sampled. Most notably the Prairie Standard. I keep waiting, and seeking, a Prairie Artisan Ales beer that wow's me, but I just haven't discovered one yet. This beer is pretty mediocre and I don't really see myself picking any of this ERA in the future. By no means is this a poor tasting beer, just unspectacular.

Stone Brewing Company, Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout
This offering from Stone is fairly outstanding. Big, bold flavor of dark chocolate and almonds, without being sweet, but rather earthy and oaky. Zippy and airy start, smooth finish. The alcohol content will insist that no more than two of these beers are necessary to inebriate. Oh, and the nose on this beer is near that of a crisp chocolate fondue. As is probably evident, I am a fan of this beer.

To be honest, I think a lot of their early success is do in part to the competition they are playing, coinciding with catching good/decent teams at the right time. However, not having a turnstile like Carmelo in the starting unit cannot be understated. Even when accounting plugging in a neutral to (-) defender, they are often times younger legs and much...much...much more active and getting deflections and tips disrupting opposing teams offenses, and allowing a very quick team to get out into transition. Overall, OKC has an identity, finally, that is one of some gamble on defense when necessary, turn them over, and outrun them in transition. I think this identity can't be understated either, due to the lack of true shooting that is on the roster.

In order of importance, imo:
1. favorable schedule
2. sans Carmelo (sorry Melo)
3. knowing our identity, and being able to out athlete teams that try to emulate GSW and chuck too many tough and deep shots.
4. Paul George is on another level defensively right now, and fits this system very well

I almost forgot about that last point. Paul George is taking opposing teams star players out of most games at the 2-4 spots, and can defend some 1's and 5's. I think things are clicking for PG3 this year, especially since he doesn't have to cover up Melo's busts.

Sorry, that's pretty lengthy, and probably pretty boring, but, as you may be able to ascertain, I have been putting a lot of thought recently into what has changed with this squad myself.

Oh, and I think the ceiling has increased if for no other reason than GSW showing cracks and the level of competition overall in the West seems to be a bit depressed from that of the past decade or so.

Darn no, that was a well thought out and detailed response Especially for a fellow like me that watches religiously all the Raptors games, listens to approximately 15h of basketball related podcasts weekly and has several other teams than the Raps that he roots for/loosely follows

Your guestimate in % on Kawhi Leonard pulling a Paul George and sticking around with Raps next year...? (which is obviously of huge concern for Toronto/Canadian peeps ).

Thanks! As far as NBA consumption goes for me, I have been on the verge of picking up the full NBA tv package but think that I would shortly descend into madness with how many games I envision myself watching. Between the nationally broadcast games and regional coverage of OKC and the Mavs, there are at least 2 games on every night and that is seems to be enough to keep me borderline manic.

I digress. I think there is so much psychology going on with some of these moves that I struggle to find anything meaningful as a predictor of what will culminate. However, about midway through last season, local sports coverage was constantly touting Paul George's love of fishing and the outdoors, which Oklahoma is rife with both. Also, there appeared to be a truly genuine camaraderie that developed between not only Russ and PG, but PG and the entire roster, a bit of a mentoring aspect. I think OKC also benefited from the sour ending to PG's time with the Pacers, and immediately stepping into the warmth of the Thunder fan base that stayed behind him all season, even after the "Playoff P" debacle.

That said, I get the feeling that The Raptors fanbase shares many similarities to that of the Thunder, and think Kawhi is a player that likes the anonymity that affords him the opportunity to simply play basketball in a nurturing environment. If the Raps continue with their success this season(which I fully anticipate that they will, due to the versatility of their roster), the needle will start to subtly shift in favor of a long-term signing. I know that with my sagacity, yourself and the Raptor nation should able to sleep a little easier, hehe.

There was a day this past week that I awoke at 5 am, and went for a run, and the picture above was my time and distance. I haven't had a running distance greater than 2.5 mi. since college. The night before I was watching some David Goggins interviews, got jacked up, and couldn't sleep. Check out David Goggins if you haven't heard of him. Anyway, my feet, knees, and hips were shot for about the next two days.

Maybe that anecdote was an attempt to side step the fact that I failed to reach all of the weekly goals that I set for week 47. Or perhaps this was a psychological ploy designed to remained myself that I can kick ass out of nowhere. I will do some psyche diving to try and get to the bottom of that.

I missed my meditation and exercise goals by one day. I missed my live poker goal all the way. I missed my online play goal by what was basically all the way. I missed my drinking goal by three days.

I'm not going to the trouble of setting specific weekly goals outside of the year-long parameters that I have above. This week I am going to put in some work in all area's and see where I end up. Oh, and here is another distraction in the way of some new beers connoisseur'd.

I don't really feel like doing writups on these beers at the moment. Suffice it to say, the last Coop Ale Works Imeprial Stout was far and away my favorite. The id from Coop was probably my least favorite and just didn't move the needle much at all really.

The totals weren't were I would like for them to be from the past week, but I spent some time on the road over the weekend, which made staying somewhat routine oriented difficult. The biggest accomplishment that I had last week, was keeping my drinking pretty well in check. The two days that I went over my 3 drink limit, it was only by one drink. Actually, one of the two days that I went over, wasn't an entire drink, I just didn't feel right marking a positive strike in that category, despite barely exceeding the limit and wanting to lie.

Since I am going to fall short in my poker volume goals that I laid out from the start of the year, I am going to switch them up a bit. I am going to shoot to exceed 600 hours online(which was my live volume goal for the year, and I should be able to accomplish.) and 200 hours live. The live volume goal will still be a failure for the year, but this way I will still have something to strive for as I wrap up the year.

Even though this year looks, to me, that I will have made some progress in many areas, some strides itt and some outside of it, there are also going to be some clear shortcomings. I can't help but think though how much the tracking of my different goals that I have set has not only brought mindfulness to problem areas in my life, but also sticks a proverbial foot in the closing door of accountability that I would have let slam close in the past, or would have been completely oblivious to. Even though we are a month out, I am excited for a new year of goal setting tat is rooted in greater experience.

Week 49:
[5/7] Meditate for a minimum of 5 minutes each day
[5/4] Exercise a minimum of 4 days each week. (minimum of 25 minute workout)
[7/7] Feed the wolf of love, starve the wolf of hate
[0 hours] 600 hours of live poker 158:15
[10:30 hours] 400 hours of online poker 533:30
[5/7, 0/3] No more than 3 alcoholic drinks in a day.

This past week, I had pretty decent success in several of my goal areas. (As a side not, I just realized, here in week 49, that my exercise goal should read, (out of 4), rather than (out of 7)). I missed the mark slightly on meditation, with yesterday being one of those missed days. I got to a point yesterday where I was going to go force a meditation, but decided against it. Maybe I should continue to push myself into doing things that are uncomfortable?

I was able to meet my exercise goals, and have been very pleased with my efforts in this goal area all year. These efforts are something that I am going to continue on into the new year. The 5 or 6 years that i pretty much abdicated any exercise efforts is just ridiculous, and i never want to fall back into that way of life.

I put in a modest amount of hours online, with many of those hours going into mtt's. As is probably evident from the the paltry amount of hours, there were no deep runs. The online bankroll has fluctuated back and forth from $178-$160 over the past couple of weeks. It feels like I am on the verge of a big run up though. I will continue to put in 10-20 hours online through the rest of this year.

My temperance efforts are perhaps what I am most pleased with from the last week. I was able to go back to back weeks with 5 days of no more than 3 alcoholic drinks. The goal for this week is to step that effort up to all 7 days, with at least one day of no alcohol.

As of late, I have been putting in some thought as to what my goals will be for 2019. I have not decided if I am going to continue documenting goals itt, as my poker volume has dwindled so precipitously, this thread may have run its course at this point. However, I do want to finish out this year, as I am fairly impressed with myself not having missed a week of updates throughout 2018, even though the results haven't always, or maybe ever been there. I believe that my tracking of 2018 will provide me with a nice framework for future improvements, regardless of the results I have a nice tracking of what my process was. As for now, on to week 50!

Week 50:
[6/7] Meditate for a minimum of 5 minutes each day
[4/4] Exercise a minimum of 4 days each week. (minimum of 25 minute workout)
[7/7] Feed the wolf of love, starve the wolf of hate
[0 hours] 600 hours of live poker 158:15
[13:15 hours] 400 hours of online poker 546:45
[6/7, 0/3] No more than 3 alcoholic drinks in a day.

Another week in the books. A bit of progress here and there. A few areas where I came up short. I missed hitting meditation on every day of the week, by yesterday. It was my intention all day to sit for some meditation, and each time that I went to do so, something came up. I didn't realize that I missed the day's meditation until I was laying in bed last night.

I squeaked in my 4th workout of the week yesterday, but Saturday's workout was the most daunting. Working out was about the last thing that I wanted to do on Saturday, but after thinking about how little I wanted exercise, I determined that it would be so pleasing psychologically after it was done and I had maintained my pace for 4 workouts on the week. I am trying to continue the mindset of doing things that suck.

I chipped in another 13 hours and change towards my new goal of 600 hours. I am going to have to post up a couple of 25+ hour online poker weeks, which will be a major stretch for me, but it is an aspect that I am going to be mindful of over the last two weeks of this year. A key for me is going to be maintaining a focus on playing solid poker while I wrap up these hours. The online bankroll is currently sitting around $184.

My drinking was, as in check, as it has been for 2018. I didn't post any days with zero alcohol, but I all but one day saw me well in control of my drinking. I am going to try and finish out this year strong in regard to my drinking control, and 2019 I am going to really try and take a major step forward. With that being said, here is a dram that while nothing stands out, does play host to some nice oak tastes, a peppery middle, and mild vanilla finish. Not a bad buy for the money, ~$30-$35.

Cheers to week 51!

Regarding the poker goals and the 25+ hours for the next two days, have you thought about playing different poker variants online? It can make the hours seem not as daunting. I know on Global the only variants they have is PLO and Pineapple, but even playing a couple of 4PLO (would not recommend 10PLO with your BR) tables during some down time can feel less like work and more like fun.

Good luck on the rest of the year!
