I have a huge bankroll for this (like I said my living expenses are as low as can be and I've had a great salary for 3 years), so if I'm even remotely profitable BR shouldn't be an issue.

From first hand experience, I strongly recommend to create a schedule, really practice time management, and be very mindful about balance. Poker at times became a bit monotonous after regularly grinding that type of volume; And I love this game.

Good luck, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Maybe Aesah will come in and do a better job summarizing, but a quick one is,

- he quits 6fig job
- does well at nlhe for awhile
- crushes some bigger plo games for a bit
- plays in florida for awhile with tmckendry
- makes vids for crush live poker
- leaves poker for a gaming tester job or something like that, maybe at Blizzard?
- leaves that job and goes back to poker but has flirted with doing other things as well again I believe
- he also explored real estate at one point I believe but didnt like it

Kinda crazy to briefly look back/reminisce about this thread 7 years later.

Hopefully anyone in a similar spot with similar tendencies/feelings takes a long, hard look at quitting their 6 fig easy job to become a professional poker player.

The grass isn’t always greener and the job usually isn’t the problem with someone’s life. And trying to make it as a pro poker player going forward if in similar spot is likely making their life infinitely harder than working on themselves/their life and maybe making a small pivot (there are always outliers/exceptions of course).

Professional poker takes an extremely strong and stable mental makeup in the long run (luck plays a big part too).

Aesah, wish you the best man. After semi-following for a long time, I just think poker isn’t even close to the right move for you. IMHO (which means who the **** am I to post here and give advice, but oh well) you should never play a single hand of poker again (you don’t seem to like it much anyway), find a stable job that u don’t hate, and focus on being physically/mentally healthy with a relentless pursuit of social connection in and out of the work place being your number one priority.

***im gonna regret sending this tomorrow bc I’m kinda drunk...but hope u can feel I’m coming from a good place/zero judgement and wish u the best man

...also Tyman, you’re the best and always super positive. But you left out all the mental health/life satisfaction issues that are the most important part of the story

haha yeah, honestly i didn't know how to sum those up in a super quick way and it felt like a disservice to just gloss over it. Shoulda thrown it in there somewhere. Figured Aesah will come in and add to the cliffs at some point, mine were pretty trash, but it's hard to summarize a long 7 year thread without spending a bunch of time on it

Thanks for the update as well. Tester job at Blizzard and crushing tables = best of both worlds. A 7 year old post still with activity.. - I’ll have to read through this for the gems.

lol

hey will update more detail later

definitely had some very long lasting unhappiness (years!) throughout this thread, true, but also a reminder that most of it was filled with happiness

also thanks for the advice, no matter who you are. It's definitely not a simple black/white subject, and I know I've lashed out at people in the past, but right now I feel that if:
-you put in the effort
-it comes from a good place
-you are respectful

then really I'm in the wrong if I'm not appreciating it. Thanks <3

Good attitude. Finding what's right for you and your path is a very difficult process. Trial and error for sure. GL aesah

Thanks Still working on finding my way, but i'm on the upswing right now. Overall my happiness in the past 3 months has been really high. Going to use this time where I'm thinking clearly to reflect on how to not make the same mistakes again. Outside of poker, which is going average (I need more hours badly, still struggling with that), I would say I mainly attribute it to two factors.

The first one is finding close friends I can spend time with in person. I have had a decent amount of close friends in the past, but they are almost all long distance due to the nature of my lifestyle. Just as with romantic relationships, long distance friendships are much more difficult to manage, and for me personally I have found hanging out in person much more energizing.

The second thing is new experiences. This kind of goes hand in hand with the first, because when many of my friendships were long distance, I maintained them through online gaming. While gaming is something I still enjoy, there are just so many more things you can do face to face. Actually I'll add a third thing here and say making new connections, that was something that wasn't really possible when my social life consisted of making friends online. You never truly got to know someone, what motivates them, what irritates them. If they were in a bad mood they could just log off, etc.

Out for now, I just wrote this post in like 10 minutes so definitely feeling the effects of being happy/confident

No I am trying to play more poker actually, but not really putting in enough hours right now. In fact putting in very few hours. I feel alright about it because I feel like I'm growing and making a lot of progress in my life in other ways besides work. Mainly social and health

Thanks for the comments everyone!! May go back and address ones that I glossed over later

I got my first gym membership! That's kind of exciting. Well actually it was a few weeks ago but I hadn't posted about it yet

Doing 1 hour Monday through Wednesday (Chest/legs/back) with a friend

Top priority is looking better. I haven't ever really put in much effort in that department before, but think it's definitely worth some more attention

I always recommend starting with Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength. You'll build strength quickly and there's something about doing a bunch of squats that makes you build confidence quickly as well. People notice.
