Re: Just quit my 6 figure job to play live poker

2 cards visible + 1 invisible (but in play at showdown) on flop IMO pioneering new great form of poker

Re: Just quit my 6 figure job to play live poker

The best way is probably to watch an educational streamer who explains thought process for all decisions (I don't know who that would be right now). But typically for these card games your win condition will be getting ahead on either

1) value (or card advantage, by trading efficiently, using your mana efficiently)
2) tempo (killing your opponent before he has the chance to play all his cards)

these two concepts work together, by getting ahead on tempo you can leverage it into value. That's the baseline mindset you want to work with in Hearthstone. Unless you're playing high level constructed, in which case you also need to understand how your deck works vs. in each matchup vs. all the other meta decks you will be facing.

Re: Just quit my 6 figure job to play live poker

Thanks, Aesah! I watched some of Trump's (no, not that Trump) videos for beginners on youtube yesterday and they reinforced those same concepts. I've had a lot of fun in the little amount of time I've spent so far the past couple of days playing the game.

I'm a little surprised by how expensive it appears the game can get if one wants to take competitive seriously. Blizzard must be making a fortune off of the game.

there is almost always at least one competitively viable constructed deck that is cheap, but yeah card games tend to be pricey

Re: Just quit my 6 figure job to play live poker

Quick life update, all my ongoing job applications fell through

Looking to get a semi-permanent place in LA while I figure out next steps for myself, most likely involving another round of job applications. Gonna play some poker (maybe live, maybe online) short term

Can you not still use a hud with bovada? I used to use bovada card catcher to get it to work.

I met Aesah irl (we hiked at Red Rock Canyon with tmckendry and lost the trail and got hopelessly lost among snakes and lizards one time lol) and he was a cool guy. Been a while since we last talked or I looked at this thread, I'll start keeping up with your blog it's well written and thoughtful, best of luck man

Self banned my old account a couple years back. You used to be able to use hem with it, but you had to use an additional program or two, one of which I believe was called bovada card catcher

Re: Just quit my 6 figure job to play live poker

Alright I pulled the trigger and got a (semi) permanent place in LA for now, will be the first time I've been not-a-vagabond since I left Riot ~1 year ago. I went for something slightly more expensive than I usually go for. I'm getting older I suppose, I used to not have too much preference staying in all kinds of different conditions from $10/night hostels to $200/night hotels but now I want a bit of luxury. Thus I want to start winning at poker for a bit before I hit the game dev market again

Re: Just quit my 6 figure job to play live poker

Just noticed this thread broke the one million views milestone, thats pretty cool

I got a poker theory question for it that I'm working on:

How should you adjust your preflop range against an opponent who is playing preflop too loose?

I would play a wider range and 3-bet more when they’re in the pot. For a few different reasons, but not sure if they’re all valid

I'm just a lowly 1/3 NL live player, but my answer would be: at a 10 handed table, you likely shouldn't be making much of an adjustment at all.

Yea you don't rep much other than QQ and rarely Q7/77 on the flop then they're both heavily discounted on turn. Plus it's doubtful you raise those for that sizing.
