Hello 2p2,

I am a 19 yo Dutchman pursuing my goal to become a top notch reg in highstake mtts. Here is an introduction for the ones who are interested in my poker background.

Introduction
I met the game of poker playing with some friends during breaks at school when I was 17 (live NL10 ftw). The game didn’t ran for a long period but it was a fun introduction tho. At home I started playing some freerolls online, reading some strategy articles on the interwebs and made some small deposits when I turned 18. I continued playing some poker and studying the game a little bit next to my college/university. I never seriously escaped the micro-lowstakes back then, but made some money to enjoy, improved my game and simply enjoyed the sessions I played.

In January’16 I created a blog on nl.pokernews.com where I kept track of my progress. I got in touch which some Dutch players who were able to help me and I grinded up a roll playing some micro sngs and mtts next to playing a some lowstake mtts in backings. In april I got the opportunity to join a stable. I am still super happy with this opportunity and joining the stable. They immediately put me on $10 abi, where I just hit my highest abi of the year in march which was $4.5. It was a blast to get involved in a cool learning environment and get acces to a ton of knowledge. I was very motivated to work hard and climb the stakes. Dividing my energy between university and poker (next to some social life, etc ) made me a bit unsatisfied with the way both careers pads where heading. I wasn’t able to give my best in both of them and even though I passed my year and I was able to move up in stakes, it didn’t make me feel satisfied. I really don’t like to be mediocre in my careers while I am convinced I can be top. In the Augustus I decided to cut university for now and move my full attention to poker. I am currently playing regspeed games up to $109 and turbos op to $44 (hot $55). For the next year I want to climb to high stakes mtts.

Career goals
When I compare mtt players with cashgame players, I think the natural habitat from mtt players is to overthink the amount of luck we need to achieve our goals. Some might tell themselves they are just unlucky for not being where they want to be. That you need to be a lucky goat to bink some millie event preparatory you can become a hs reg. But I think many don’t put enough emphasis in self-reflection. Do we tell ourselves we did well if we moved up from $30 abi to $45 abi in a year? Do we blame the set up or flip for busting, while we just missed a 7bb ev river bluff? I think a lot has to do with keeping yourself accountable for every hand and every tournament you play. Being straight up with yourself, admitting your game sucks and then do something about it. When limitless states in the Joe Ingram podcast, that it’s absolutely doable to climb the stakes in the cash game environment in a rapid peace. I do wonder why I won't aim for doing that in mtts. Some might state that it takes years and a chunk of luck to reach the highstakes. And yes I do realise he has sick work ethics and I assume a very talented mind. But I can put in volume, work hard on my game and I am confident in being able to make great progress as well. When I compare the cash environment with the mtt environment, I see no reason why I can’t go from $33 abi to a highstakes mtt reg in one year. I am playing for a stable where I can get acces to high level content (not the ‘best in the business’ ) and I don’t necessarily need to bink big since a pokerroll or short term results won’t be that important. I got about a year in expenses in my bank account. I do obviously need to hit some scores to increase my net worth and keep my life roll on track, preparatory I can comfortably play highstakes, but I don’t see getting unlucky at the tables holding me back a lot while moving up in stakes.

2017
- Play 12.5k mtts
- Grind $20kev/month by December. (i.e. 20% roi * 1000 games * 100 abi)
- Carefully start with offering some coaching

The journey to become a hardworking, efficient and balanced pro is pretty interesting to me. I think I am doing alright but there is still a lot to improve on. I would like to crush on the tables as well as crushing life off the tables and I have worked out some goals related to this for 2017.

Life goals

#1 Cut time spending in bed, average 8 hours a day, don’t use phone in bed Currently I am spending too much time in bed caused by two things. I often grind till 3-4 am and afterwards I am not immediately able to catch sleep, which I think is is to some extent inevitably. (as long as I am playing peak in cet time zone at least). But I still believe there are somethings to do about it, like not hopping in bed immediately after the session but drink a cup of tea and read a bit for instance. I have watched episodes of series in bed before but I don’t have the idea that it makes me sleepy. It often leads me to surfing around a bit on twitter/forums as well. Especially on days I do not play do I want to cut on time spending on my phone in bed. During the day I strive hard to be efficient but in bed am I wasting time on a regular basis.

#2 Gain weight, 75->85kg I want to improve the way I am feeding myself, I eat pretty healthy but due to my sleep rhythm do I only get in a 2 meals a day, breakfast/lunch and a dinner with the family. I lost some weight since I moved to the peak schedule and I would like to gain this back + a little extra. Long term anything between 85-95 kg would be nice for me.

#3 Improve the condition of my body by giving meditating a serious shot and exercising at least on all days I don’t play.
I have never succeeded in making exercising part of my routine in the past. However, I am aware it’s super valuable to get your body in shape is this something I struggled quite hard with. Playing sports has been quite easily for me since I really enjoyed them, but going to the gym/working out isn’t something I like to do yet. I do consider trying out new sports when I move to a city again. Tennis seems fun to me and just playing with a tennis partner
is more flexible compared to a playing in a football team.

Next to excersing I will give meditation a serious shot. I have followed the ‘take 10’ before on headspace but didn’t really continued afterwards. After reading some positive words from Joe Ingram and friends on twitter I decided to give it a more serious shot. I started January 1st and I will meditate every day till the end of February for sure. Afterwards I will reflect on how valuable it’s going to be for me and whether I want to continue. If I have to believe what they say am I hooked by then.

#4 Move out
I moved back to my parent’s place when I put university on hold last summer. At this moment I am living at my parent’s place, most of my friends from college and elementary school are living nearby, I have a good parental attachment and the place is large enough to have enough space for my own. I do yearn to live in a lively city again tho, I really enjoyed the liveliness of a city compared to a quite village. With playing online poker I don’t get as much among the people as I used to do with university and college. However I know it won’t get like that as long as I am pursuing this career do I think it helps to live in a place where there is a lot going on.

#5 get the dating life going / build relationships
Haven’t spent any effort in building relationships or meeting new girls the past half year. Leaving my comfort zone and approaching more people is something I would like to improve on, I think great things can emerge from that and I am gonna need that when I will move to a city where I don’t know many people yet.

#6 10 books and 15 podcasts
I would like to use a bit more leisure time observing interesting information by reading books or listing to podcasts instead of watching some Netflix. I barely read any books the past few years, but I recently started reading Models from Mark Manson and I found it to be interesting and amusingly. I will start reading the Four Agreements afterwards. Lmk when someone has some good suggestions for books or podcasts. Want to wrap up the Joe Ingram limitless podcasts and have the bill perkins episodes on my watchlists.

That was it for now, I am not entirely sure what this blog is going to look like. In the past I just kept it at monthly large updates, but I think it might be interesting to update on a more frequent basis, especially during the big series.

To elaborate a bit more on the OP, it does ofcourse makes sense that mtt players think more about the need to get lucky compared to cashgame players, there is obv just a lot more luck/variance involved in mtts. Also I think it can definitely give a boost to your career when you bink strong and you can therefor afford to purchase superb coaching for instance. Letting this influence the way you hold yourself accountable for your progress and plays is imo a flaw tho.

Super pumped for january, have studied a bit more than usual in the past week to prepare for the series. The Winamax Series will kickoff today, schedule seems v nice, I am pretty big fan of winamax. Eventough it is just a local site they have managed to build better software than global sites like 888/pp and the games are soft. Only disadvantage is the higher rake caused by the French regulation.

Some goals for January

[ ] 1250 mtts
[ ] evbb 8+
[ ] meditate everyday
[ ] Get in some study hours to keep my game sharp while grinding the volume heavy schedule.
[ ] Get in 10 exercise sessions

I will visit my coach in Curaçao next weekend and I will grind the remaining part of the online series there. Afterwards I have 5/6 more days to enjoy the Island a bit more.

Thanks for the congratulations, subs and gl wishes

I played 3 more sessions after last sunday, had some fun runs and booked some profit. I shipped a 11r Storm on ps.fr for 2k euros and the 20eu psko Last Call on winamax for 1.3k euro. I think yesterdays 7th place in the Uppercut had most potential (came in 3/9) but had some deep runs in bb109, a big winamax series event and the b22 as well.

January so far:
-8 sessions
-498 games
-6.44evbb/100

I took today and tomorrow off because I fly to Curacao tomorrow at 10 am. Really looking forward to sun, grinding the series and study a lot with the coach. I will try to make some pictures from the trip this time (since my mum likes that and I kinda regret that I barerely made any on the trips I have been the past 2 years), I will share some here.

Hope everyone has a good weekend, glgl!

Hey,

I am a MTT pro and I found this thread while looking for a coach. Your results seem good, your goals insanely high, which I like.

May I contact you by PM to get more information about you and your ("careful") coaching offer, and eventually discuss this further ?

PS: I'm not new on 2+2, but with the hacked database problem, I decided to close my previous account and get a new one.

I'm way down the MTT food chain but love reading the blogs of people like yourself, great motivation to study and work hard in the micros. Enjoy Curacao.
