Heyo, going to post the interaction from earlier today in xpastor's pgc
So this took place in
this thread today. Didn't want to further derail xpastor's thread, made this first response while like 20 tabling 2-6handed games

1. It depends on when exactly you're talking about pre BF. I have a cpl buddies that absolutely CLEANED UP SNGs back in the day, so I might have stuck with them. There were multiple great things to grind
-hyper sats actually had no rake on them when they were first created. So nobody really grinded them. I think poker_in_pb was the first guy to grind them and he made a ****ton of money while just INF tabling and just completely autopiloting. I think jorj95 was the next 'real reg' to join the games
-ftp sngs were ****ing gold. everything was great over there. 6m turbos and when they were created, the 6m super turbos were awesome
-same with just like 6max sngs in general as 9man reg speed and 9man turbo were the popular format that most regs played
-sngs on the smaller sites were just free money. i know guys who made a killing on even the super timbey rooms like Merge, adding in the few games that ran on there before most people even knew it was a poker network lolz (with BF being when a ton of Americans went flocking to the site)
So yea, it really depends. If you're talking even further back, the $500 SNGs on Party Poker were beatable for like 15% ROI. Since I'm still fairly young (meh, took me a second to write that, I'm 27 and feeling pretty old and I've been around forever in the poker world especially given my age
) I wasn't online grinding back in those 2004-2006 days so it's really difficult for me to be able to visualize what the lobbies looked like and what WRs were capable and what volume was capable etc.
SNE was introduced in 2006 and I think my yearly expectation with how hard I can grind and the fact I could b/e or better pre RB even in the 'toughest' SNE years (2013-2015) would make it such that I would have always been better just SNG grinding. But it's hard to know for sure of course
2. I would probably not necessarily suggest for a player currently playing 100nl to play for a living given the current state of online poker, but I also in general just think with really hard work and dedication, that anything is possible. It also highly depends on where you live, your background, your wants and desires in this world....it's always such a complex question to answer and a difficult subject to give advice on.
I think it was probably even dicey for me to have chosen poker when I did. I wasn't earning that much money before BF and honestly having BF happen was one of the best things for my career as I then found the 6max super turbos on Merge and got really good at them which propelled me into playing STTs and going for SNE+ after relocating in Nov 2011.
3. Tough to answer how much more money I would have made if SNE were still a thing. A lot of guys were losing money pre RB and so the SNE grind was quite brutal for them and not necessarily netting them a lot of $.
But for me, I was beating like 5.5/6 SNE games on avg at the sats for a really nice clip pre RB, even crushing in EV the COOP months when literally >50% of my overall volume would be 6/6 SNE regs. Basically all day long there would be 5regs open sitting and a lot of time there would be too many regs on so basically every game was 6regs, and I still won EV pre RB.
That's clearly not the case at the 6m 25bb cash hypers, I never got really good at them. But I think if I would have played sats from the beginning of 2012 (instead of switching in 2014) and if SNE was still a thing, it's not unreasonable one bit to think that I wouldn't personally have something like $500,000-$750,000 more than I currently do. I think an argument could be made for the number to be even higher, more like 750k-1mil, but I'd rather lowball and write a number I'm super confident in.
Well, that was fun to write while eating dinner
. Going to run a few spots and then Shana is arriving for massage. I guess I'll study some 25bb and 25bb SKO stuff now so I can jump in and grind after my massage and then do a 6m/16m sat study sesh along with studying whatever hands I mark from this 25b/25bb sko session
