iamjswone: Another $100 - $10,000 BR challenge inspired by Mr Polk!

Hi,

I play as either iamjswone or iamiswone depending on the site, but I'll be attempting this on 888 where my screen name is iamiswone.

I've been following Doug Polk's $100 - $10,000 challenge and it's inspired me to try my own.

My poker ďcareerĒ is like most... I started poker a few years back and had a bit of success early on relative to my small bankroll. I then proceeded to spew it off bit by bit after the get rich quick dream replaced the initial interest I had in strategy and learning the game. I think Iím still just about in the black overall but donít have a sharkscope subscription and so canít create a player group as far as Iím aware. Iíll probably look into getting one as the challenge progresses.

I had a brief stint with a stable called Pocarr, during which time I was still hung up on the dream of binking huge field tourneys and simply didnít put in the work or make use of the resources available. This is something I still regret as although I wasnít a huge fan of being backed from a financial perspective, the content was really good and you simply canít find comparable resources online without paying for it.

I've always struggled to grind micro stakes MTT's as I find it hard to stay focused when even first place is fairly small, especially when you work full time and so have another source of income anyway. This has always led to me playing way above both my bankroll and skill level (which Iíve finally accepted is really rather lowÖ). I'm hoping by turning this into a challenge/thread it will hold me accountable and prevent the "yolo" approach on occasions when I get board or tilted, and force me to improve as a player.

I actually deposited $100 and started the challenge Sat 27 Aug and there's already been more swings, due to aggressive bank roll management, than I intended which ultimately led to this thread in the hope it'll make me stick to my buy in range for fear of going busto and having to post about the failure.

I'll be playing mainly MTT's but will try my hand at cash and SnG's too.

Iíll try and update as often as possible with hand historyís, binks (hopefully) and just general thoughts regarding poker and perhaps some other stuff such as getting back down the gym, eating better and hopefully getting abroad more than I have lately, now that my ski season days are behind me.

So starting roll was $100 plus 3 x $3 tourney tickets, I came third in a $3 MTT straight out the gate and got up to ~$180ish, then dropped back down to ~$50 before binking a $0.50 rebuy which takes me to my current roll of $108.35.

Not sure how to insert a screenshot of my balance like I intended, if anyone could shed any light on how you insert photos it would be much appreciated.

Current BR management is up to; $1 MTTís, 2NL cash and $2 SnGís.

Wish me luck!

Re: iamjswone: Another $100 - $10,000 BR challenge inspired by Mr Polk!

This evening's session finished well despite starting bad, won a satty into a $12 tourney but when I registered it took the money from my roll instead of using the ticket so ended up playing two $12 MTT's which took a chunk out of the roll to start.

Was also in for ~5 bullets in two $1 rebuys which I need to cut out.

Finished the night with a win to bring me back in the black for the challenge...

Tried playing a bit of cash and I really don't know how anyone has the patience to grind micro cash... it tilts me so bad, losing one buy in even at 2NL seems to tilt me more than busting a tourney lol, think I'll stick mainly to MTT's although I really wanna improve at cash so I'll probably keep changing my mind

Next sessions aims are to be stricter with my bankroll and only allow my self 1 rebuy and one add on in the $1 rebuys.

So today didn't go great... The thread is already paying off though as I got really tilted and would have just busted playing higher buy-in tourneys in the past and then re-deposited another time. I really want to give this challenge/thread a decent shot though so managed to call it a day.

A few fun hands that I didn't get around to posting yesterday...

Cheers for the dono geez

I should have probably either 3 bet the A10 or folded in the last hand, I think I play marginal hands like that to passively quite a lot so that's something I'll need to work on, especially as I hope to increase my average buy-in in the future.

        BR to end the day...

Do you have a deadline for this?. I want to start also one exactly like this, but I would like to put also a time frame.

I had a challenge here, start with 100$ and make 1200$ in 40 days. I did it in 30 days. also playing micro MTT, SNG, satellites, on PS.

I've made some withdrawals because, for the moment I need some money to pay my debts, next month I would like to start also this challenge, but also to have a deadline to finish it

No deadline, think that would encourage me to be too aggressive with my bank roll and working full time might make it difficult to stick to anyway. It's more intended so that I can enjoy playing poker without depositing as much and hopefully improve in the process lol

Good job on the last challenge and let me know if you start a thread for the new one, I'll check it out!

I'm working also full time, but even if I've set that deadline in my challenge, I wasn't aggressive. What I know is that, on Sunday I was investing in a lot of MTT's, especially big fields ones.

Yeah I will let you know if I will start the challenge. I would like to be sure that, for 3 months, I will not be tempted to make withdrawal.

In the last two years my salary was decreasing a lot and I had to add almost all my winnings to the family budget)).

I'm thinking to make a challenge, like 100$ (or 200$), to 5000$ in 3 months. I think 10.000 $ in 3 month at micros is not possibly playing part time. Maybe just ship one big field micro MTT). Also 5000 it's hard, but that's why it's a challenge.

Bricked everything today, one deepish run (last three tables I think, in a $2 rebuy but that's it).

Went quite aggressive with the bank roll playing MTT's up to $3 tonight, gonna drop right back to $0.50 freeze outs and play $0.40 HUSNG's on the side as not many micro tourneys run until I build back up above $100.

        BR to end the day:

It's kind of hard to play only MTT's with 100$. You have to find yourself, some games (like SNG for reducing variance) that you beat or crush. For example, in my challenge, when I've started, I put a lot of volume in 1.5$ fifty 50 SNG, reg speed, which I know I can beat them. Also using starcoins in satellites and incresead my bankroll to around 170. From there I've started only MTT and satellites to bigger MTT's. You have to avoid the variance and MTT's, unfortunatelly producing it.

If you play 0.55 freezouts, they are not sow many, the field is very big and you have to achieve at least the FT in order to increase a little your bankroll. If you go in the last 100 you will get something like 5bucks maximum, which is very small.

Just had a quick read of your old challenge thread, good job completing it so fast!

I agree which is why I've been trying cash and various SNG formats, I need something for when I want to play a shorter session and something that will hopefully grow the roll little by little while I play MTT's. I'm hoping it'll be micro HUSNG's as it's nice that you can just keep selecting rematch with the same player to keep the table count up and get stats on them in the process.

Need to check out the 888 reward system as well as it keeps saying you've levelled up etc but I'm not actually sure if I'm entitled to anything, may have be able to freeroll some tourneys.

        Thanks.

To tell you the truth I didn't expect to finish it )). But before the challenge I was studying almost 2 hours per day for a month, and I've realized that you have to study all the time, else you are only break even at microstakes. I'm saying breakeven if you don't tilt and because you have the basics.

Yeah I know that in 888 you are not having the same rakeback system and also you can't play at every hour the SNG, but I understood that the field is more weak. In exchange the software is ..... very bad.

I will play on 888 this days, because, until Tuesday I can't play on PS

But in the same time, in pokerstars there are a lot of regs. I've started to meet a lot of regs at at micro MTT big fields.

Anyhow I don't consider them very good because 90% of the time when they raise (especially on the turn) they have almost the nuts))).

Anyway on PS I like that I can play anytime the micro SNG for the short session.

I remember that in the evenings when I had 3 hours to play I was filling 13 tables of fifty fifty and had a small profit. It's good for the beginning of the challenge because from monday to friday you can add around 50 USD to your bankroll, playing in the evenings.

Re: iamjswone: Another $100 - $10,000 BR challenge inspired by Mr Polk!

I was playing 2NL and 5NL today along with some 50 cent tourneys and decided I simply cant do it the slow way with really nitty BR management, it needs to be fun as well.

It also makes my game worse as to counter the boredom I play far too many tables.

So I decided to jump into the 30NL SNAP pool with the intention of playing really tight to start, try and set mine cheaply and look for a double up, then loosen up.

It went well and I ran it up to over $200 at one point ended up dropping a fair bit towards the end due to tilt/tiredness though as it was a monster session for me, by far the longest I've grinded cash. Had a few tournys on the side but no binks.

        Cash graph for today...

        Couple of fun hands...

Would usually have folded this but villain had just tried a stupid bluff 2 hands earlier and I stacked him so I had him marked as crazy and on tilt lol

This last one probably seems really standard to cash game players, but I was actually quite happy with it as I had the guy marked as a really passive fish and so I just didn't think I'd ever have him beat, in a tourney I'd usually still end up calling just to see what I expected, so I was happy with the laydown

I've got a question for any cash players that might reading...

Before you start you're sessions do you simply set a time frame and attempt to stick to it or do you have a profit target you aim for and a stop loss the other way?

Just curious as there was a few times yesterday when I was up a lot more than I ended that I thought I'll stop soon, but it's so easy to just keep playing in SNAP/Zoom thinking "just one more big pot" lol
