That is insane. It is going to be difficult to be profitable enough to cover expenses and put money away in the roll. Do you have any other options? If so I would highly recommend venturing those rather than paying huge per night to play.

Are things different in London?

And can you get comped stuff like in vegas? In London that is.

Re: How to Be Happy as a Live Pro

Sorry for the inactivity last couple days on here folks, just finished a 10.5 hour session and heading to the gym now. Will have a full update for y'all when I get home in an hour or so. That's if I don't just pass out and go to sleep.

All I can say though, at this stage, is pray for OP.

There's a homegame I'll play in maybe once or twice a week, 10% $13 cap, game is probably crazier and higher EV too - plus free food etc. Going to be playing here on Friday this week. But yeah, no other options really.

Yeah man, London is the nuts. You actually earn reward points for playing from what I've heard - enough that you could almost freeroll your casino meals for a week. And then participate in the freerolls too which are very +EV. The opposite of Australia really, which is why I want to go there so badly!

Glad to have you on board mate!

Daily Update - Mon 31 Jul 2017

Hours Played: 8
Profit: -$876
Variance: 3

Notes: So on Monday this week I originally wasn't going to play but decided I might as well because I had no good excuse not to and really felt keen to grind. I've never been so card dead in my life as I was in this session. Didn't win a single meaningful hand... would keep getting into awesome spots like villains telling the table they're going to blind raise to $25, looking down at AKss, limping in, having them blind raise, to $25, then getting 4 callers, and being able to backraise to $150, get some random limper to call, flop is J34dd, he donks $200, and I fold. Just **** like this, missing basically every single flop. Felt I played really disciplined though for the most part and was very happy with it! No real interesting hands to note.

One super annoying thing - public transport, or rather, the complete lack of it at night time. I had to spend $40 on an uber ride home at 12am after training in earlier that afternoon. There are no trains or busses from the city at that time during the week. Only Sat and Sun mornings - which I'll be taking advantage of.

Daily Update - Tues 1 Aug 2017

Hours Played: 10
Profit: -$1,032
Variance: 2

Notes: Cool thing about this session was that I got there at 10am and didn't have to wait on any list at all! I also felt very full the whole 10 hours - had only 3 sandwiches and got home still feeling fine! Hopefully my metabolism is adjusting.

I DO have some cool hands from this session. Let's jump right into it!

Hands

Hand 1 - Looking for feedback!

UTG is young Chinese guy, don't know much about him.
$500 effective.
UTG opens $20, folds to hero in CO who makes it $60 w/ KK, folds to UTG who calls.

Flop ($127): JJ9

Villain checks, hero bets $60, villain raises to $125, hero calls.

Turn ($377): JJ9 8

Villain checks, kind of doing this "micro nod" of his head repeatedly, which I believe looks quite weak. There's about $230ish behind effectively. I feel like it'd be pretty hard to get called by worse if I jam here? Also the flop COULD have been two toned and not rainbow, I'm not sure.

I check back.

River ($377): JJ9 8 7

Villain jams for like $230.

Results:

Spoiler:

Hand 2 - Deep Water

Effective stacks are $1,200 (250bb).

UTG has lost about $2-3k in the last 5-6 hours, is very much on tilt, and is spacking out hard at this point...

UTG ($500) opens to $25, villain in MP ($1,200) 3bets to $100 (he's been rather tight and straight-forward so far), folds to hero on the BTN who sees UTG reach for 3x$25 chips - he's definitely calling...

Hero looks down at AA, decide to cold call the 3bet. I want to keep EP in the pot who has already prepared his call and, although I'm super deep with MP, I don't want to scare out EP who's probably going to punt off the rest on the flop if he connects in any way. So hero CCs the $100 and UTG calls.

Flop ($300): Q94

Hero checks, UTG checks, MP bets $125. Hero obviously needs to raise this flop - it's a super wet texture and I don't want to give either player good odds to draw. Plus I think I can maybe get some value from AQ/KK from MP. Hero raises to $300.

UTG folds, MP calls.

Turn ($900): Q94 9

Hero has only $760ish behind, shoves, MP snap calls and tables QQ and scoops a $2,500 pot.

Obviously, in live poker, losing 500bb pots is extremely brutal - especially when you've had a reasonably decent day on the back of three tough losing sessions. It takes a LONG time to make up for those 500bb pots - but what can you do. I'm fairly certain I played the hand perfectly and it was obv just a cooler. So I'm quite happy with it.

So folks, please pray for hero's measly 20BI roll which has taken a beating! Actually a huge fan of this song though... This is by no means a mainstream pop music review thread but as I was walking to the gym tonight, I played this ****, and boy did **** hype me up! When she says "I hope you're somewhere praying", all I can do is think of you guys!

Spoiler:

That's all for now folks! 32 hours played so far in the week and two days left. That means I just need to play 1 more session this week to hit volume target - which is awesome. Super stoked about that. Despite the results, I'm actually feeling extremely happy atm. I'm absolutely loving the autonomy I have in life rn - haven't felt this amazing in a long time.

Tomorrow I'm going to sleep in - my lower back is absolutely killing me from sitting in that chair for 10 hours today. Sleep in, head to the bank, withdraw more $$$$, maybe a bit of food shopping, do an errand for dad, and just relax tomorrow. You know what would be awesome, if I lived within walking distance of the casino... That way I could EASILY put in a 3-5 hour session on a day like tomorrow. I really don't want to take the entire day off, but with transport and wait list issues, it's really not feasible for me. Sucks, but at least I'll still get my volume in for the week on Thursday.

Also, heading to the Penthouse to play on Friday. Juicy NLH game that get's pretty spastic. Had a reg sit next to me today who told me he played at this homegame last night - was playing a rotation mix, 2 orbits of $2/$5 NLH and 1 orbit of $1/$2 PLO - he bought in for $200 and cashed out for $8,700 - so anything's possible in this game!

Talk soon. <3

Re: How to Be Happy as a Live Pro

hey have you thought about being a bit more flexible in regards to your schedule? it might be easy to burn out. i think poker should be ur main priority and focusing on getting into good games at good hours (like afternoon to evening, prioritizing weekends) and ensuring your gym/eating habits are good should be the play here. poker is unique in that you can be flexible. grinding vs nits during the daytime doesn't seem fun/as profitable as playing at night.

i played about 1200 hrs live last year and was a big winner so i thought i should give my experience. it seemed much more profitable for me to play efficient hours at good times rather than longer hours at non optimal times.

gl man from what i can tell you're def good enough to crush these games

Hey mate,

Yeah unfortunately I have very little flexibility as to when I play. I can only play til late at night on Friday/Saturday because that's when there's public transport out of the city. My driving restrictions don't allow me to drive after 11pm which causes all sorts of problems and basically forces me to start my sessions at 10am.

Trust me, if I had it my way, I'd start at like 5pm and play til 3 every night - just can't physically do it atm.

If you don't live too far maybe it's better to just take an uber back home. It should be easy to figure out if you make more money overall by playing night + uber back vs playing in the morning.

There's just no feasible way I can afford a $40 uber ride each day. That's over $200 a week in additional expenses that I simply cannot afford.

Going to look at maybe finding a room in the city though because if I can get a cheap place that's within walking distance, that'll make things a lot easier.

Re: How to Be Happy as a Live Pro

I'm interested in how much work you are putting into live tells and what if any study resources you are using for them. I guess you could group them as "passive" (you are just watching/listening) and "active" (you are engaging and watching/listening).

As a predominantly online player, it's an area of the game I know very little about and certainly haven't studied any modern resources on it.

You mention a live tell in one HH and you seem to be taking exploitative lines, which seem like logical adjustments to make to the live environment.

I guess what I am hinting at is that I can't see you need to improve your technical game to easily crush, so it is ?maybe? something like improving your live tell reading and maybe chat engagement that will build your already decent edges.

As I have mentioned in my own pgc, I may be getting the opportunity for live play in London around October, so I'm following you avidly.

PS

Being OMC, it's gonna be a hoot if I get stereotyped, esp by some of the London live regs, who I follow on here.

for me the difference between day and night grinding is easily $200 a week, i hate playing in the mornings lol.

but yeah getting a closer place within walking distance is a really good idea aswell. if u dont use a lot of space something on flatmates.com would work pretty well for you

Hey man,

Yeah in terms of live tells, I think Crush Live Poker is a pretty decent resource... Basically a bunch of YouTube videos that look at patterns associated with certain tendencies. For example, the quick call vs a flop cbet - typically precludes sets and value from their calling range - people who do this are almost always weak. I also like to look at "hand apex timing", verbal tells, and the eyes. I.e. Announcing your bet will quite often be used as intimidation, and when someone stares at you after betting, it's quite often weakness/intimidation too. Basically, YouTube is your friend on this one. I don't have any secret live tell resources and won't claim to be any Paul Ekman microexpression expert but it's something I'll improve on as I play more.

Yeah man, have spent the whole afternoon looking into it. Narrowed down my results on Flatmates.com to a few options, one cheap and two fairly expensive. All the places are 5-15 mins walk from the casino which means $0 on transport costs that I'd otherwise pay. So even though the rent is more than I'm currently paying, I can save money in other ways.

Currently I'm paying $120 WK to rent here but it's a good 30 min drive from the casino. Which is conservatively $45 a week in fuel costs. So that bumps my effective current cost up to $165 p/w. Here are the places I'm looking at:

Option 1:
- Rent is $120 wk, bills and internet included, private room, kinda small and prob not a terribly comfortable room, and like 7+ roommates. Like yeah, I'm really only after a bed and a roof over my head, but this place is just so unappealing compared to the others... The sick part is that it's the same price as what I'm currently paying, so I'd save effectively $45 a week for fuel which is nice. 14 min walk from casino. Downside is that it's a tiny looking single bed... I'm 6'5" and so the smallest thing I need is like a king single.
Option 2:
- Rent is $280 wk, bills and internet included, private room, own bathroom, one flatmate, 64th floor of one of the nicest high rises in the city. I've actually stayed at this place before on my 21st birthday party. It's super luxurious and I'd live like an absolute king. Like this isn't just an "okay" place to stay, it's a super super nice spot. And only 9 min walk from the casino!
Option 3:
- Rent is $260 a wk, bills & unlimited internet included, private room, own bathroom, one flatmate, nice looking apartment, and only a 5-10 min walk from the casino.

I'd be over the moon with option 2 or 3 and imagine I'd get used to option 1 after a while. The question is what can I afford. There's no parking at any of these places, so I imagine I'd probably get rid of my car. That'll save me some money on rego and fuel ofc, might be able to get $2k for it as well if I'm lucky.

If I go with my first preference, the $280 pw place, obv the variance increases a bit liferoll wise. I imagine if I stayed at this place I could get by on $455 a week in total expenses (rent $280, food $125, other $50). Of my ~10k liferoll I could stay here for 21 weeks or 5.5 months before burning through my 10k liferoll. HOPEFULLY by then, I'll have a healthier bankroll and some winnings to feed into a liferoll.

With the cheap place, I could survive there for 8.5 months on a 10k liferoll.

There's obviously risk either way. But the main thing is that either of these places allow me to play during the best time of day (night) and maximise profitability. The expensive place has a min stay of 3 months so if after 3 months things aren't working out, I can always swap to one of the povo options.

I wasn't ever planning on moving out of home here in Brisbane but over the past week or two, I've come to realise that I definitely live too far away from the casino currently for it to be sustainable. I need to be able to play 5pm-3am sessions consistently to make good money. Grinding mornings will be tough to make much money. With my licence issues and lack of public transport, I'm pretty set on making the move closer to the casino.

I'm going to inquire with this place now and see whether it's still available!

im not sure how parking works at ur casino but maybe u can park ur car at the casino parking for free and just store it there lol. also those prices are really good btw in sydney private room is basically close to 500/wk near the city.

Hey man,

Yeah tbh life would be much easier rn if I didn't have this ***** late night driving restriction. So pointless. $500 a week sounds absolutely crazy. But I guess Sydney and Melbourne are a fair bit more desirable.

Parking at the casino is free but the idea is to not need my car because I'll be close enough to everything. So I'll probably end up getting rid of it? Only one of these places has street parking, the rest have none at all.

Going to a place which is a 14 min walk to cas tomorrow morning to check it out, have also messaged 3 other places. Hopefully I can move into one of them on the weekend!

Tomorrow for me will look like this:

9am meeting with potential room mate
10am be at casino
grind ~8 hours
home, gym

and then Friday we'll look to kick the next week off with a late night grind @ a homegame.

Re: How to Be Happy as a Live Pro

I was in Brisbane for a few days a couple of months ago and played 3 sessions at Treasury. Although the rake is bad, and overall game structure/management is terrible the standard of play is absymal so should be pretty profitable. I do think that, albeit a small sample (i did play over 100 hours elsewhere in Australia), the games are much softer than a London £1/2 which I have a lot of experience in. London £2/5 is a large step up with the majority of seats being occupied by good regulars that play online seriously.

GL though!!!! - Get to Melbourne ASAP imo, for life EV if nothing else!
