So I've been playing poker on and off for quite a while, without much success online as I keep tilting and moving up in limits. Last time I played seriously was 5 years ago when I went busto after tilting and moving up to 5NL with a $50 BR which didn't go so well. Anyways, I think I've matured a lot over the years - on August 30th I decided to try building a BR from $50 and give it a real shot, with the main goal of staying disciplined, and slowly moving up in stakes.

My first ~10k hands:

Thoughts
  • It's obviously gone quite well over the past 26 days. I've maintained a high win rate over 10,600 hands, which is not a lot, but I am doing something right. I've hit a speed bump over the past week or so, as I've begun to play more aggressively sometimes in the wrong spots, so we'll need to adjust our play slightly. Remember that fish at 2NL almost never shove without a nutty hand.
  • Stats of 33/22 suggests I'm playing too many hands - this will be something to keep an eye out for, and something to dig into my database to find an answer for. The high VPIP can be explained by the fact that I often flat weak hands versus weak-tight or weak-loose opponents preflop, as they never bet/raise unless they have something, and will more often than not call large bets with middling holdings. Perhaps I can adopt a more TAG playstyle versus these players and win more?
  • Blue line needs improvement - what I think this means in conjunction with my rising red line is that my value bet sizing is off. Will experiment with varying vb sizes to try and get paid off at SD more.

GOALS
  • Move up in limits and increase earnings over time, aiming for substantial supplemental income from online poker
  • Don't play when tilting or tired
  • Identify early warning signs of tilt. I usually start calling down very loose and bleeding chips, and often feel an irrational sense of superiority over other players at the table and that I can "outplay" them, leading to bad decisions such as triple barreling on a bad board, value raising when I should be calling, and so on. Obviously I need to take a breather if I can feel the onset of tilt.
  • Maintain at least 30 BI for whatever level I'm playing at
  • Put in 500-1000 hands per day. So far I've managed to do about 400 (mainly single tabling for the first 2 weeks or so). In the past week I've put in nearly 1,000 hands a day so we should be able to do at least 30,000 hands a month.
  • Maintain a statistically significant win rate at each limit before moving up
  • Learn more advanced poker concepts (watch streams, read, etc.) - this is so that I can make more sophisticated reads at the table. Currently I'm only able to have a general range of my opponents in mind, but this fails when board textures are tough and I misread them (i.e. sometimes failing to read that it is highly unlikely for an opponent to have called 2 bets with a gutshot, therefore missing on a river value bet when the gutshot hits)
