Introduction:

Hi guys and gals. Thanks for stopping by and welcome to my first PGC thread. My name is Michael, and in this thread I will be documenting my progress to my goal of $100K profit in the great game of live Pot-Limit Omaha. My circumstances and reasons for doing so might be a bit different than the average poker player, and I hope it will be an enjoyable read and journey for those who choose to partake in this adventure with me.

Background:

I am a 23 year old university student who is currently studying music. I began playing poker in high school, and have since grinded live 1/2 and 1/3 NLHE at my casino on and off for a modest hourly to supplement my income during my university years. I also play online at various different sites and stakes, the most recent being lesser-known platforms like PokerFishs and CoinPoker.

Goals and Aspirations:

I am dedicating this thread and challenge to my mom, who has been in a battle with breast cancer for over 8 years now. I recently found out there is an effective but costly medicine called Ibrance that may extend and provide a better quality of life for her. The catch is it costs over $12000 CAD a month. As part of a lower-income family and as an only child who is in the middle of doing school, I simply do not have the power to supply such a large sum of money to help my parents with their medical bills in a conventional manner via a normal job or career. Thus I am going to take a shot at live PLO, which I've found to be much softer than NLHE in hopes of a higher hourly.

Numbers:

As variance is insane in live poker, and PLO more so, I will begin this challenge short-buying $200 at my local 1/2 5 bring-in game. As I grow my roll, I will begin buying in deeper as I see appropriate. I will post updates for every session I grind, and also make note for interesting or big hands.

Thanks for reading if you’ve made it this far, let’s pray for some run-good!

Session 1:

7:40PM
Just arrived and sat down. Table looks good with lots of deep stacks.

8:00PM
Got stacked for my first buy-in. 3bet AAJ2dd versus an older gentleman and picked up 3 callers including the original raiser. I flop KT3r gutshot with a bdfd and overpair. With about 0.75 SPR I get it in and lose vs flopped top 2 and flopped top set. Chips!

8:37PM
Added on $100. Not running great. Missing all flops so far.

Session 1 Contd.

Going to call it a day. Ran it up a bit after the latest rebuy but ultimately lost a big pot to end the session. I opened AJJTds in MP with $400 effective got 3-bet by a loose gambly Asian guy who picked up 3 cold callers for $50 each. I completed the action with a call and checked a A79r flop with 2 bdfds. Action checked through and I hit the gin 8 turn giving me the nut straight with a J-hi flush redraw. Checked to me and I bet seven green chips $175 into $250. Initial 3-bettor jams, another player calls and I stick the rest in. River is an Ace and we lose to QT88.

Current:

Hours: 3.5
Dollars: -$500/$100000
Hourly: -$142.86/hour

Everything looks standard so far. If you understand preflop hand selection (seems you do), I'm sure you'll do fine @ this game.

What books have you read? It's a bit old, but Rolf Slotblooms book on short stacking PLO is full of interesting tactics (plus a good amount of BS - fair warning). Hwang's second book also has a good section on shorter stack pump-pre/pile-in-post framework.

Also, how many hours do you have @ PLO vs NLH?

Thanks for stopping by! And yea I think I should do alright at this game especially with some more studying. I haven't read Slotbloom's book but I have read Hwang's. I'll definitely check that out so thanks for the recommendation.

As for my hours at PLO, I have very little hours at live PLO but over 1000 at live NLHE. Online I've played both to a reasonable extent, though I picked up Omaha more recently. Historically I've done pretty well online on the softer platforms, so I hope that'll translate here even though live PLO is a new format for me (it plays 9 or even 10max here at my casino).
